00:00:16So we've got two artists for you on stage tonight.
00:00:18Muslim Shagan is a rising star of the classical world from Lahore.
00:00:25He represents two distinct lineages that he's from.
00:00:30One is the Rababi tradition, which dates back to the time of Guru Nanak Dev Ji,
00:00:38who's the first guru of the Sikh faith.
00:00:41And when he was compiling the Guru Granth Sahib and applying it to Raag,
00:00:46he had a companion by the name of Mardana who used to play the Rabab.
00:00:52And his descendants were the Sikh of Muslim in the subcontinent,
00:00:58have come to be known as Rababis.
00:01:00And they uphold the traditional form of Kirtan,
00:01:03which if you like in Christian language would be hymns.
00:01:07And Muslims actually performing at the Shepherd's Bush Gurdwara this Sunday,
00:01:12doing an evening of Kirtan at the Gurdwara.
00:01:15And then several generations ago, his family also embraced the Gwalior Garana of classical music from the subcontinent.
00:01:24So you have multiple sort of schools of thought in the subcontinent,
00:01:29each with their own expression of music, of classical music.
00:01:32You have various in the sitar, in the tabla, in singing as well.
00:01:36And his Gurdwara is this Gwalior Garana.
00:01:41And his great-grandfather was a humongous name of classical music in the subcontinent
00:01:47by the name of Vistar the Gulam Hassan Shagan.
00:01:50And his great-grandfather was an even bigger name by the name of Bailan.
00:01:53So he comes from a huge lineage of classical music that dates back 500 years.
00:01:58And this is his second sort of tour now of the UK.
00:02:02Accompanying him on tabla is Kashif Dhani, also from Lahore,
00:02:07who happens to be here in the UK at the same time.
00:02:09And Kashif Bhai is of the Punjab Garana when it comes to tabla playing,
00:02:13and is a student of Ustad Gulam Abbas, who lives in America now.
00:02:18So again, sort of both come from huge traditions, representing huge lineages.
00:02:23So tonight Muslims are going to take you on a classical journey to start with.
00:02:27Hence the Tharn pulled on stage.
00:02:29And then at some point he might change the flavour a little bit for you.
