00:00Now it's to sit down with Lucy Liu.
00:02Hi, Lucy!
00:03Your new movie, Rosemead, has everyone buzzing,
00:06and rightfully so.
00:07It gives so much with this depiction of mental illness,
00:10family bonds, the Chinese-American community,
00:12and friendship.
00:13What does playing this character and the story mean to you?
00:16The story is important because it is something that happened,
00:21and it happened 10 years ago, which is not that long ago,
00:27and it should not have happened.
00:30And I think that there's so many stories that we have
00:34that have not been told.
00:36There's no movie or television series
00:40that talks about the love of the mother and son
00:44and mental health and all the things that go along with it
00:47in our entire lexicon of there's no filmography
00:51that has this and lists it.
00:53And I think that's terrible and also terrifying.
00:57How does this movie reflect your growth as an actor?
01:00I don't know if it's growth as much as the variety
01:05or the possibilities.
01:07And that's exciting to me because it's something
01:10that I've always had, and I just have not had the opportunity
01:13to lead a movie in the 30-plus career that I've had.
01:19My heart is bursting with gratitude to be able to tell this story
01:24and to be able to bring this, I guess, to my community
01:27and to also understand that it's a universal message
01:30and that people connect to it and they feel the movie.
01:35In addition to a very successful career in entertainment,
01:38you also went to the White House last year
01:40to celebrate Asian-American representation,
01:42and now you're receiving a CCA AAPI Trailblazer Award.
01:46Does your son Rockwell know how cool his mom is?
01:49And what is something you hope your work inspires
01:51or instills in him?
01:53He does not know how cool I am.
01:55He knows that I can make a killer piece of chicken
01:59and I can heat up a nice lasagna, you know,
02:02like basic mom stuff.
02:05I think the first thing he's ever seen
02:07and probably the only thing he's ever seen
02:09live-action wise is Red One.
02:11He was nine and he was probably just a little bit
02:14under the gun to watch that,
02:16but now after he's gotten over kind of some
02:18of the scary creatures, he really loves it.
02:20I hope that he is proud of me.
02:23I love him dearly.
02:24He is my greatest teacher.
02:26I say that all the time because I've never learned so much
02:30in such a short period of time.
02:32And I thought I knew it all when I was 16,
02:34so wow, what's happening?
02:38What was the biggest honor, Lucy?
02:40Being asked to represent at the White House
02:42or being name-checked in a Destiny's Child song?
02:44Lucy knew.
02:45I feel like Destiny's Child got paid,
02:47so I can't give them credit,
02:49even though they're incredible.
02:51But I think going to the White House
02:53and going through security like 17 times
02:55just to get through the door was kind of a big deal.
02:58So I'm going to go with the White House.
03:00I'm going to choose the White House.
03:02Okay, we're going to put 10 seconds on the clock.
03:04Tell everyone why Rosemead is a must-see.
03:07Ready? Go.
03:08Rosemead is a personal journey for all of us.
03:11When people are thinking about their lives,
03:14they think about, should I have made more money?
03:16Should I have had a bigger house?
03:18No, they think about what was my impact?
03:20What did I leave behind?
03:21And this movie is something that I am really proud
03:24to leave behind.
03:25I'm really proud of you.
03:30And this movie is a wonderful day.
03:31And this movie is not just the day of our minds.
03:34And this movie is a part of our minds,
03:35which I'll have to have a better life.
03:36And I'm really proud of you.
03:37And I'm going to take a few minutes to watch each other.
03:40I'm pretty sure.
03:41So I'm just going to keep you in mind.
03:41I'm not going to keep you in mind,
03:42with the new ideas of the day.
03:44And you're going to focus on the day.
03:46And I'm going to take a great job.
03:47And you're going to be the best,
03:48if you're going to watch the deepness upgrade.
03:50And there's going to be a good idea.
