00:00Well, the studio just said, we can't afford it, you're not going to do it.
00:04Tom Hanks is saying he paid for part of the production on Forrest Gump out of his own pocket.
00:08Speaking on In Depth with Graham Bensinger for an interview posted Wednesday,
00:12Hanks opened up about some of the issues the production faced while making the 1994 classic
00:17Forrest Gump, revealing that he and director Robert Zemeckis both paid for scenes to be shot
00:21in the movie when Paramount tightened the purse strings. One of the scenes was the classic run
00:25across the country that Gump does in the middle of the film. Paramount said it was too expensive
00:30and could not be shot, even though Zemeckis argued it was crucial. When the studio did not budge,
00:35Zemeckis went to Hanks and told him he needed Hanks to trust him and back him.
00:39This run is going to cost X amount of dollars, and it wasn't cheap.
00:45Hanks said he agreed and the two went to Paramount explaining they could provide the money,
00:48but that the studio would have to share the profits a little bit more, to which the studio agreed.
00:52But the actor said he had to front money again in another instance during the film
00:56when they needed insurance coverage due to the weather while shooting a particular scene.
01:01Bob and I said, well, we'll cover the insurance, and we did.
01:05Ultimately, those decisions earned Hanks an estimated $65 million when the film became a
01:09blockbuster. To watch the full interview, head to THR.com. For The Hollywood Reporter News,
