Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones 28 August 1833 – 17 June 1898, 1er baronnet, était un peintre et designer anglais associé au style et aux thèmes de la confrérie préraphaélite.
Jeunesse et formation : Edward Burne-Jones est né le 28 août 1833 à Birmingham, en Angleterre. Sa mère est décédée peu après sa naissance et il a été élevé par son père et leur gouvernante. Burne-Jones excellait dans le dessin dès son plus jeune âge. Il fréquenta la King Edward VI Grammar School et la Birmingham School of Art avant de s'inscrire à l'Exeter College d'Oxford pour étudier la théologie. C'est là qu'il rencontra William Morris, avec lequel il noua une amitié et une collaboration artistique qui durèrent toute leur vie. Initialement destiné à devenir pasteur, Burne-Jones se tourna vers l'art sous l'influence de Dante Gabriel Rossetti.
Formation artistique : L'œuvre de Burne-Jones se caractérise par des figures allongées et éthérées, des couleurs riches et des thèmes médiévaux ou mythologiques oniriques. Parmi ses peintures les plus remarquables, citons The Beguiling of Merlin (1877), The Golden Stairs (1879-1880), Laus Veneris et sa série arthurienne, The Last Sleep of Arthur in Avalon. Il a également réalisé des illustrations exceptionnelles, notamment des dessins pour le Kelmscott Chaucer, imprimés par l'imprimerie de Morris.

Early Life and Education: Edward Burne-Jones was born on 28 August 1833 in Birmingham, England. His mother died shortly after his birth, and he was raised by his father and their housekeeper. Burne-Jones excelled in drawing from an early age, attending King Edward VI Grammar School and the Birmingham School of Art before enrolling at Exeter College, Oxford, to study theology. There, he met William Morris, forming a lifelong friendship and artistic collaboration. Initially intending to become a minister, Burne-Jones shifted his focus to art under the influence of Dante Gabriel Rossetti.
Artistic Training: Burne-Jones’s work is characterized by elongated, ethereal figures, rich colors, and dreamlike medieval or mythological themes. His notable paintings include The Beguiling of Merlin (1877), The Golden Stairs (1879–1880), Laus Veneris, and his Arthurian series, The Last Sleep of Arthur in Avalon.
