Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India highlights a relationship built on trust and strategic partnership spanning seven decades. West Asia Strategist Waiel Awwad explains why India sees Russia as a faithful ally and how this visit is a crucial opportunity for India to communicate its stance on the Ukraine war. India has consistently called for peace, emphasizing that 'this is not an era of war,' as Prime Minister Modi has said multiple times. With the US pushing for a peace plan, India’s diplomatic message to Putin could ease tensions and open doors for strengthening India’s energy security and 'Make in India' initiatives.

00:00and also they say like you know India was leaning India was being leaned by
00:04the European countries to resolve the issue between the Ukraine Russia
00:07conflict well I think we have to see this visit from the context of the
00:13bilateral relation between India and Russia Russia is considered by India not
00:18only as a strategic partner but also as a as a faithful partner I mean over the
00:23seven decades we have seen the Russian involvement in Indian affairs was always
00:28pro-India was always supporting India whether it is in the international arena
00:32or whether it is in the conflict with taking place in Pakistan and the
00:36Bangladesh liberation in 1971 while we saw the United States sending their
00:42nuclear warships into the Bay of Bengal to threaten India and that time India
00:48signed the strategic treaty and Mrs. Zandira Gandhi signed with the
00:52Russia USSR but then against the American wishes so I think that's
00:58sort of relation has been built over the years and Russia have earned a rich
01:03heritage from the USSR and they built on that with the good relation with India
01:08I think India has to utilize the opportunity of the visit of the prime the
01:13president of the USSR Russia and should be taken full advantage of building a
01:20relation on the economy in the defense on security cultural and all aspect of this
01:25bilateral relation especially at the time when the geopolitical changes is taking
01:30lots of change that's of fast changes in this part of the world the second part
01:36which is also quite important for India is that Indian also has to present its view
01:41about the Ukraine war which India have already been saying and the prime
01:44minister said it many times that this is not an era of war and he wanted to end the
01:49Russia Ukraine war and I think if that message goes well with the president
01:54Putin especially at the time when the United States is also using its own
02:00influential diplomatic channels to pressurize Putin and Zelensky to negotiate and
02:07agree to the peace plan I think that will ease the tension on India and having said
02:12that I would say that India have noticed with that the American tariff has been been
02:17threatening India especially in the new and the energy where the Indian have
02:22reduced sharply the purchase of the oil from Russia while they are buying from the
02:28United States so if this really war put to an end then India will be more
02:34comfortable not only in buying the Russian oil again but also in buying the mid the
02:39the weaponry from Russia and that shifting the technical know-how to India and
02:45make in India make it a more successful yes I think that is what even the Russian
02:55are saying that there will be the fifth generation of the air the fighters which
02:59is the Sukhoi 57 and including also the s 400 and 500 but I think India is trying to
03:07play it low at this time because of the pressure from the United States they are
03:10already under negotiating that the the deal of between the commercial deal
03:16between India and the United States and they don't want it to rock the boat but
03:20having said that I have noticed that there are also a couple of the envoys of
03:25the foreign country from the European Union have already been stating anti-Russia
03:32sentiment in the Indian administration which is not a protocol to be followed
03:36according to Geneva Convention that they should stay away from internet politics
03:41especially when it comes to the bilateral relation and I think India's
03:44successful story and during the Sindhu operation by using the s 400 and Brahm
03:49was now where India is selling it also to other countries with the collaboration
03:53with the Russian given India boost to increase it is production of weaponry which
03:59is the latest weaponry and if the Russian really transfer the technology while it is
04:04denied by the United States and the West for India in many field I think that will
04:08give India boost and it is making India and also make India not only an
04:14economical power but also a military power to recon with
