Shocking video posted on X allegedly shows the public execution of a man in Afghanistan's
00:05
eastern city of Khost after he was accused by the country's high courts of murder, capturing
00:10
the chilling moment the deadly shots purportedly rang out in front of thousands of witnesses
00:14
who had gathered to watch.
00:19
The public killing which took place on December 2nd, and is known in Afghanistan's Sharia
00:23
law as Qisas, is the 11th known execution since the Taliban seized power after the US's
00:29
botched withdrawal in 2021, according to the country's Supreme Court.
00:34
The Khost police announced the execution on X, warning attendees interested in watching
00:38
the public bloodshed to not bring cameras, smartphones, or weapons to the execution.
00:44
Police spokesperson Mustafir Ghorbaz claimed on X that at least 80,000 people attended
00:49
the execution, which local news reported took place in the city's central football field.
00:54
Ghorbaz also posted a picture of the alleged man executed by Taliban officials, whom the
00:59
Supreme Court identified as Mengel.
01:01
According to the court, Mengel was put to death for allegedly murdering a man named Abdul Rahman,
01:06
in a case the Supreme Court said was examined, quote, very precisely and repeatedly by three
01:11
courts.
01:12
Ghorbaz later expanded on the accusations against Mengel on X, alleging that he had, quote,
01:16
brutally and mysteriously murdered 13 members of a family.
01:20
A statement from the court said the surviving victim's family were given the option to forgive
01:24
Mengel, but that they refused and insisted that he be put to death.
01:27
Ghorbaz claimed the public execution was carried out by a relative of those Mengel was convicted
01:32
of killing.
01:33
Sources told Amu TV that the relative was a 13-year-old boy.
01:37
The Associated Press said the execution was approved by Afghanistan's supreme leader,
01:41
Abatullah Akunzada.
01:43
Local news reports also said two others were also implicated in the murder, but that their
01:47
death sentences were postponed because the victim's family members weren't present.
01:51
The execution was carried out despite calls for it to be stopped from the United Nations'
01:55
Special Rapporteur for Afghanistan, Richard Bennett.
01:58
Reports received of an imminent public execution in coast Afghanistan this morning.
02:02
Public executions are inhumane, a cruel and unusual punishment, and contrary to international
02:08
law, it should be halted, he wrote.
02:11
Human rights organizations have long been critical of Afghanistan's judicial process and
02:15
laws.
02:16
The Taliban uses a strict interpretation of the Islamic legal framework known as Sharia law,
02:22
and according to Amnesty International, has been known to arbitrarily arrest, torture and
02:26
execute individuals.
02:27
Human Rights Watch says Taliban officials have also detained citizens for smaller infractions,
02:32
such as playing music and wearing inappropriate hijabs.
02:35
Public executions are also not new for the previously war-torn country.
02:39
During the Taliban's occupation of Afghanistan in the 90s, officials often carried out stonings,
02:45
floggings and executions.
