00:00Shocking video posted on X allegedly shows the public execution of a man in Afghanistan's
00:05eastern city of Khost after he was accused by the country's high courts of murder, capturing
00:10the chilling moment the deadly shots purportedly rang out in front of thousands of witnesses
00:14who had gathered to watch.
00:19The public killing which took place on December 2nd, and is known in Afghanistan's Sharia
00:23law as Qisas, is the 11th known execution since the Taliban seized power after the US's
00:29botched withdrawal in 2021, according to the country's Supreme Court.
00:34The Khost police announced the execution on X, warning attendees interested in watching
00:38the public bloodshed to not bring cameras, smartphones, or weapons to the execution.
00:44Police spokesperson Mustafir Ghorbaz claimed on X that at least 80,000 people attended
00:49the execution, which local news reported took place in the city's central football field.
00:54Ghorbaz also posted a picture of the alleged man executed by Taliban officials, whom the
00:59Supreme Court identified as Mengel.
01:01According to the court, Mengel was put to death for allegedly murdering a man named Abdul Rahman,
01:06in a case the Supreme Court said was examined, quote, very precisely and repeatedly by three
01:11courts.
01:12Ghorbaz later expanded on the accusations against Mengel on X, alleging that he had, quote,
01:16brutally and mysteriously murdered 13 members of a family.
01:20A statement from the court said the surviving victim's family were given the option to forgive
01:24Mengel, but that they refused and insisted that he be put to death.
01:27Ghorbaz claimed the public execution was carried out by a relative of those Mengel was convicted
01:32of killing.
01:33Sources told Amu TV that the relative was a 13-year-old boy.
01:37The Associated Press said the execution was approved by Afghanistan's supreme leader,
01:41Abatullah Akunzada.
01:43Local news reports also said two others were also implicated in the murder, but that their
01:47death sentences were postponed because the victim's family members weren't present.
01:51The execution was carried out despite calls for it to be stopped from the United Nations'
01:55Special Rapporteur for Afghanistan, Richard Bennett.

02:11Human rights organizations have long been critical of Afghanistan's judicial process and

02:16The Taliban uses a strict interpretation of the Islamic legal framework known as Sharia law,
02:22and according to Amnesty International, has been known to arbitrarily arrest, torture and
02:26execute individuals.
02:27Human Rights Watch says Taliban officials have also detained citizens for smaller infractions,
02:32such as playing music and wearing inappropriate hijabs.
02:35Public executions are also not new for the previously war-torn country.
02:39During the Taliban's occupation of Afghanistan in the 90s, officials often carried out stonings,
02:45floggings and executions.
