00:00As much as we're living through a sure golden age of TV right now, where there's simply
00:04more quality content available than anyone could possibly watch, it's also fair to
00:08say that the industry is currently in a state of major change and uncertainty.
00:13The streaming landscape is changing, TV channels are being bought and sold, and things are
00:18being binned left, right and centre.
00:20So I'm Amy from WhatCulture and here are 10 more TV shows that just got cancelled.
00:2610.
00:27Charmed
00:28This list was just one of the many high profile, fairly mid to high budget shows that just
00:34got binned by The CW ahead of their sale.
00:37Charmed debuted in 2018 to considerable fan scepticism about the very notion of a reboot.
00:42Though reviews were generally positive out the gate, people obviously still had their
00:46hesitations.
00:47As charming as the whole idea was, it was hardly ever a ratings smash, and viewers dwindled
00:53off with each season, definitely not being helped by the departure of lead Madeline Mantoc.
00:58Following her departure at the end of season 3, and before its fourth season had even finished
01:02airing, The CW announced that Charmed wouldn't be returning for a fifth season, and, though
01:06no official reason was cited, we can assume it was due to the meagre ratings.
01:10Overall, for a show that failed to generate much of a spark, four seasons is pretty good
01:14innings.
01:15Nevertheless, it's clear that the new Charmed couldn't match the iconic appeal, or charm
01:19if you will, of its predecessor, which ran for eight.
01:22Given that this isn't the first Charmed reboot to fail, if we look back to CBS in 2014 they
01:28had theirs too, maybe we should learn from this and just leave that IP alone for a while.
01:349.
01:35Saved by the Bell
01:36Another reboot that invited immediate criticism was Saved by the Bell, both trying to reboot
01:41the whole IP by giving it a fresh new look, whilst also inviting fans of the past to come
01:46back by including its legacy cast.
01:48Expectations were incredibly low prior to its 2020 premiere, and yet Saved by the Bell went
01:53on to receive strong reviews for its self-aware tone and diverse, inclusive cast.
01:58Its first season was Peacock's most-watched original series at the time of its airing,
02:02and with Season 2 going on to receive even stronger reviews, the show's future seemed
02:06very secure.
02:07And yet, mere weeks after it won Outstanding Comedy Series at the GLAAD Media Awards, Peacock
02:12announced that it would be cancelled and wouldn't be returning for a third season.
02:15Now, once again, they didn't give an official reason for its cancelling, which, I mean, it's
02:19not that unexpected, it's not a thing that's often done.
02:22But we can assume it was either due to maybe an immense drop-off in viewers, or it could
02:27be down to the recent managerial changes in Peacock's structure, meaning that they wanted
02:31to focus their energies on newer, buzzier, more popular stuff, and this just didn't make
02:37the cut.
02:38In a way, it's a sad fate for a series that defied understandably meagre hopes to deliver
02:42a smart, reverent retooling of an iconic yet-dated classic franchise.
02:478.
02:484400
02:49Made victim to The CW's recent bloodbath, 4400 was yet another reboot of a classic series,
02:55but maybe not one as popular or well-known as Saved by the Bell.
02:59The original series ran for four seasons between 2004 to 2007, and was ultimately cancelled
03:05due to both the Writers Guild of America strike and dwindling ratings.
03:08This is all despite it receiving consistently strong reviews throughout its run.
03:12The reboot, which launched last October, actually failed to strike much of a chord at all.
03:18It was quite different and took a different tone from the original, focusing more on telling
03:22the story of white supremacy, predominantly from a black viewpoint, which, as we can guess
03:27from, you know, knowing audiences, was quite controversial.
03:31Scoring mixed reviews throughout, it reached its dramatic finale with rating figures that
03:35were less than half that of the season premiere, and months after that season finished, The CW
03:40confirmed its cancellation.
03:42It seems fairly common for shows that have a particularly socially conscious or anti-racist
03:46tone that people do not take a liking to that.
03:50People take it as a personal attack, as if you can't just choose to not watch the show,
03:54so whilst there was a lot of pushback on that, there was also a lot of praise for its
03:58ambition and what it was trying to do, which makes it kind of a shame that it got cancelled.
04:03It could have had a lot more done with it.
04:057.
04:06MODOK
04:07Now, MODOK certainly wasn't the cleverest or most visually stunning series that aired last
04:11year, but this Marvel stop-motion animated comedy certainly demanded your attention
04:16once you first got your eyeballs on it.
04:17Despite solid critical reviews, MODOK didn't really capture the zeitgeist in any major way,
04:23as was likely reflected in its streaming figures, which to date haven't been disclosed by Hulu,
04:28which in itself is a bit telling.
04:30All the same, the show was recently cancelled by the streaming service, adding yet another
04:34corpse to their pile of short-lived Marvel series, including Hellstrom, which lasted just
04:38a single season, and Ghost Rider, which was shelled before it even started shooting.
04:42Starting off the history that they have with Marvel shows, I'm saying that maybe they should
04:46just put a stop on that for now.
04:48Wait till later and maybe try again?
04:50It doesn't seem to be working.
04:526.
04:53ROSWELL NEW MEXICO
04:54ROSWELL NEW MEXICO is the second adaptation of Melinda Metz's beloved Roswell High books,
05:00made to follow the hit series Roswell, which ran for three seasons between 1999 and 2002 before
05:05being cancelled due to low ratings.
05:07It first launched on the CW in 2019, and initially garnered quite a bit of criticism for being
05:13too similar, almost identical to the original.
05:16Despite this alleged reimagining being not very imaginative at all, it posted solid ratings
05:21through its first two seasons as the general reception steadily improved.
05:25Yet mere weeks before the imminent debut of its fourth season, the network confirmed
05:29that the upcoming season would be its last on air.
05:32Once again, as we sort of expect, the CW didn't give an official reason for its cancellation,
05:37but we can sort of guess it was due to viewing figures.
05:40They ended up with less than half their original viewers when they got to their finale, and
05:44that isn't a good omen for going forward now, is it?
05:475.
05:48MAGNUM PI
05:49A reboot of the legendary 80s crime drama of the same name, this was always going to
05:54struggle, particularly because it didn't of course have our beloved and stashioed
05:58star Tom Selleck at its centre.
06:00This new take launched in 2018 as part of the Lenkob-verse of crime series reboots, also
06:05including Hawaii Five-0 and MacGyver.
06:07Whilst scoring heavily mixed reviews across its run, it was still a consistent ratings
06:11hit, maintaining an average of 7.48 million views per episode throughout season three.
06:17When the fourth season rolled around, viewership figures were dropping significantly.
06:21And yet, this isn't actually the reason cited for its cancellation.
06:24Instead, apparently CBS and Universal Television just couldn't reach a financial agreement
06:30about going forwards with it.
06:31The cancellation also effectively brought the Lenkob-verse to an end, given that Hawaii Five-0
06:35wrapped up in 2020 and MacGyver was itself cancelled last year.
06:404.
06:41LEGACIES
06:42The original spin-off series Legacies, the third entry into the CW's Vampire Diaries
06:46universe, began airing in late 2018 to solid reviews and ratings alike.
06:50Yet, as the seasons rolled on, it seemed that fans were really dissatisfied in the direction
06:55the show was taking, particularly how they chose to tackle the main protagonist, Hope,
06:59and her development.
07:00Season four's ratings have been absolutely dire so far, so it wasn't terribly surprising
07:05when the CW included it in their recent spate of spring cleaning cancellations.
07:09The decision not to proceed with the fifth season was also reportedly in part due to the
07:13network preparing to be sold, and attempting to make itself look as attractive as possible
07:18to potential buyers.
07:19If you think about it, keeping a declining show on the slate does them no favours at all.
07:23The season four finale, airing on June the 16th, is now the de facto series finale.
07:28Though this seemingly brings the Vampire Diaries universe to an end, co-creator Julie Pleck
07:32has stated that she's already working on a fourth show, so we'll see.
07:363.
07:37Naomi.
07:38We are all too familiar with superhero TV shows by now.
07:41If you've not watched any of the Marvel shows that they've been just thrusting on us from
07:46every angle, then, I don't know, maybe you've been living under a rock.
07:49Maybe you just have stronger willpower than the rest of us.
07:52But let's not forget about DC.
07:54Naomi is a DC TV show that was based off of a series of comics of the same name, and even
07:59directed by Academy Award-winning director Ava DuVernay.
08:02Given its pretty solid basis, it seemingly had a solid shot at success, and the series
08:07debuted to strong reviews, with particular praise for Casey Warfel's performance as
08:10the title character.
08:11However, beyond this, Naomi struggled to find an audience, debuting to barely 800,000 viewers,
08:17and achieving scarcely half of that number by the end of the season.
08:20Now, it has to be said that this isn't entirely the fault of the content of the show, if you
08:25were ever assuming it was.
08:26I would say it's in large part due to the huge random pauses they had in airing the
08:31episodes.
08:32At one point, they even paused it for the Beijing Olympics.
08:35It does absolutely nothing for your viewer base to suddenly have to wait more time than
08:39expected to get your next instalment of something.
08:42It kills any tension that was being built up, and it does nothing to keep people engaged,
08:46so obviously people are going to drop off.
08:49And so, just two days after Naomi wrapped up its first season, the CW confirmed it wouldn't
08:54be returning.
08:55As with Legacies, Naomi was just another underperforming title to get the axe before the CW's big sale.
09:012.
09:02Riverdale
09:03The cast of Riverdale is finally free!
09:05They've all been released from their cages, they can go and do other things now!
09:09I thought I'd never see the day.
09:12I joke of course, but it has been a bit of a long-running gag that the cast of the hit
09:16and its teen drama series have themselves grown long weary of its increasingly absurd storylines.
09:21At the rate it was going, I really thought it was never going to end.
09:25However, Riverdale is one of the latest shows to get the axe under the CW's big spring-cleaning
09:30bash.
09:31The network confirmed that the Archie Comics adaptation will end with its upcoming seventh
09:35season, set to debut next year.
09:37But in this case, there was a prevailing feeling amongst the fans, the cast and the crew that
09:41it was time to bring this to an end.
09:42I mean, it seemed fitting seeing that season 6 had debuted with a steep ratings drop from
09:46the prior season, one which they haven't recovered from so far.
09:50Considering the fame that it granted their leads, it will genuinely be interesting to see
09:53what they do next, and I wish them the best.
09:55There's a lot of very talented people on that show, it's just unfortunate that the show
09:59itself was iffy at best.
10:02And number 1.
10:03Mr Mayor
10:04Sitcom king Ted Danson debuted his new series, Mr Mayor, in early 2021.
10:10He plays a businessman running for mayor of Los Angeles for all the wrong reasons, and
10:14between the reliability of Danson and the series co-creator Tina Fey, it seemed primed
10:18to be a surefire hit.
10:20Their debut season received very mixed reviews.
10:23People generally didn't know how they felt about the very broad style of comedy, but they
10:27knew they felt good about Ted Danson, which is unsurprising.
10:31Even though the show's ratings had halved by the end of the season, its finale
10:34still pulled in a respectable 2.53 million US viewers.
10:37And let's be real, you could do much worse than that.
10:40When season 2 rolled around, the fans considered it a pretty good improvement, but critics just
10:46really couldn't get on board with the hype.
10:47In fact, most of them didn't even review it.
10:49The show's rating decline continued, with the second season bottoming out at 1.49 million
10:54US viewers in its penultimate episode.
10:56And then, literally two days after this episode aired, NBC announced Mr Mayor's cancellation.
11:01Understandably, a lot of fans were very disappointed, not only because to them it had been on an
11:06up, but also because historically a few NBC seasons actually only find their feet in the
11:10second and third go they get.
11:12And with that we've reached the end of this list of 10 more TV shows that just got cancelled.
11:21Were you a big fan of any of these shows?
