00:00That's a really bad sign.

00:06Things are not quite as they were the first time around for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,

00:11according to The Hollywood Reporter's official review up now from chief film critic Todd McCarthy.

00:16The critic likens the first installment's wild success to a makeshift expansion sports franchise

00:21that somehow played above its own level all year long and snuck into the World Series.

00:26But, he says, the second season brings this team back to reality.

00:30The misfit characters that were so appealing in the first movie are, according to McCarthy,

00:34less charming the second time around.

00:37They're like a bickering family now and not in an amusing way.

00:41Sorry, Groot.

00:42But if the original team isn't as likable this time, what about that cute little baby Groot addition?

00:47McCarthy says he's a literal splinter of the original.

00:50And if Vin Diesel spent more than an hour in studio recording his stuff, it was too long.

00:55Nice payday.

00:56I'm good.

00:57Aw, poor Groot.

00:58I just really like cutting to Groot here.

01:00McCarthy does have some good things to say about some characters.

01:03Dave Bautista's Drax, for example, generates more goodwill than anyone else does

01:08and seems genuinely glad to be on board for the journey, writes McCarthy.

01:12He also calls the scenes where Chris Pratt's Peter Quill is getting to know his father, Ego,

01:17aka Kurt Russell, the best in the film.

01:20All in all, though, McCarthy concludes Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,

01:23plays like a second ride on a roller coaster that was a real kick the first time around,

01:27but feels very been there, done that now.
