"I think that’s why fans like it so much, because they see that it’s outrageous. They see that it takes you out of your everyday life," Reid told The Hollywood Reporter.
Transcript
00:00Hi, this is Mariah Gullow from The Hollywood Reporter, and I'm in studio today with Tara Reid.
00:09Hi, Tara.
00:10Hello, how are you?
00:11How are you doing?
00:11Fantastic.
00:12You are here to talk about Sharknado 6.
00:14Yes.
00:15But as we were talking off camera, Sharknado 6 is shrouded in mystery.
00:20Absolutely.
00:21I told you, they said, right now the movie's three and a half hours long,
00:25and they have to bring it down to 90 minutes.
00:27That's including with commercial breaks.
00:30Right.
00:30You know, so they really, so we shot like three movies.
00:33They could have actually made like six, seven, and eight, but.
00:35So you have no idea what's going to end up in the final cut.
00:38Yeah, I did ADR the other day, so, but I saw a lot of the scenes that I was in,
00:42but I'm like, what happened to that scene?
00:43They're like, ah, the editing floor.
00:45I'm like, I love that scene.
00:46Oh, no.
00:48Yeah, one of the things I wanted to ask you about is,
00:51what is it like to get the script to a Sharknado movie for the first time?
00:56Like, you get the script, and you start opening it up,
00:58and what is it like?
01:00The first time we got it, I just thought it was the most ridiculous,
01:04silly movie I've ever read in my life.
01:06I'm like, sharks flying in the sky, killing people?
01:08Really?
01:08Like, I mean, this is so cheesy.
01:10It's so bad.
01:11But it was so bad that it was kind of good.
01:14And I remember going out to dinner that night with my friends,
01:17and I told them about the film, and they were like,
01:19Tyra, this is the funniest film ever.
01:20You have to do this movie.
01:22And at the time, it was called Dark Skies.
01:24So it didn't seem like as cheesy as Sharknado.
01:27And then, like, the third day into filming it,
01:30they're like, oh, you changed the name.
01:31It's now called Sharknado.
01:32I'm like, no, no.
01:33I was on the phone.
01:33You can't do this.
01:34You can't.
01:34I don't want to be an IMDB, and then I'm on Sharknado.
01:37It's going to be terrible.
01:38And they're like, trust me, it's going to work.
01:40And here we are, Sharknado 6.
01:42Yes.
01:43But to go back to your question is, there's no real script.
01:46I mean, the first one we kind of based off of it,
01:49and then the rest of the scripts, it's mostly improv.
01:53Because the lines, they would give us,
01:55every day they have new pages.
01:57We'd get new pages every morning, 30 pages.
01:59Wow.
01:59Wow.
02:00It's almost like filming a soap opera.
02:02It was crazy.
02:03It was like, this one was the hardest one we made, for sure.
02:06Because it was just, it was craziness.
02:08And you have to depend a lot, because of all of the special effects,
02:11you have to depend a lot on just the direction.
02:13A lot in that, but also you've got to know what you're kind of saying.
02:16You know, because you've got to put the storyline together.
02:18And some of it, we're like, wait, we can't say that.
02:19This makes no sense.
02:21We just said that we weren't going to do that in the other scene.
02:23So now, like, and we didn't have, like, a script supervisor on it.
02:26What is the response usually when you say that?
02:27Well, because they didn't really forget.
02:28Are they, like, first go with it?
02:29No, and then they're like, oh, yeah, you're right.
02:30I forgot about that.
02:31Like, you know, I'm like, how can you forget about that?
02:34One time in the movie, she has a fake hand, you know, and she has a glove on.
02:38I'm like, guys, the glove's not on.
02:40We have to reshoot that scene, you know, because they have to take it on and off.
02:43Because you had your real hand.
02:45And they go, oh, don't worry, no one's going to see it.
02:46I'm like, are you kidding me?
02:48They don't care.
02:49Like, no continuity whatsoever.
02:51Do you ever, ever have to stop and say, you know, April wouldn't do this?
02:55Oh, yeah.
02:56I mean, there's different characters that you know wouldn't do it.
03:00Like, there was a scene, actually, with Finn, where all of a sudden, like, a girl's kind
03:06of beating him up.
03:07Well, that would never happen.
03:08Finn would never let that happen.
03:09So we were like, this isn't Finn.
03:11Ryan had to fight for that.
03:12He's like, say, no.
03:14I don't get beat up by girls.
03:15You know what I mean?
03:16So stuff like that.
03:17We were saying, April should do this.
03:19And April's not like that.
03:20I'm like, April, like, she saves kids.
03:22And she's, like, loves, like, to save the world.
03:24She's not going to go now punching, like, people and, you know, turns into, like, this mean person.
03:29So you have to monitor, like, everyone, like, me, Ian, Anthony, and the producers, you know,
03:34and the writer, we have very big says in the movie.
03:37So we all kind of collaborate and make this crazy movie magically work.
03:43Yeah.
03:45So what are we, I know we can't really talk about Sharknado because neither of us have seen
03:50it, but we can talk about some of the cameo appearances.
03:54Can you talk about any of them?
03:55Is this going to air before?
03:57It'll air the day that Sharknado comes out.
03:59And then I can say some of the things, right?
04:00Yeah, great.
04:00Oh, that's even better.
04:02So this Sharknado is absolutely crazy because we've done everything.
04:08I already give birth in outer space inside of a shark.
04:11I mean, who could do that?
04:13I went from a normal person to half robotic to, like, a full robot.
04:17I have magical power that I can fly, laser beams.
04:20I'm like a pocket, like, army knife pocket switch.
04:24I can do anything.
04:24You know, she can hold up helicopters and, you know, save buses from, like, hold up the
04:29bus so the kids don't get killed.
04:30And she does all kind of, like, she really, one of the things I love about playing this
04:35April is that she's a superhero.
04:37And I think every actor's dream is to play a superhero because it's so much fun.
04:42You've got to do, like, this crazy stuff with it.
04:45And this one, they have, they make clones of me.
04:48So there's an April clones.
04:51So there's, like, hundreds of Aprils.
04:53And are we in the future now?
04:54Because Sharknado 5 ended with Gil coming back and taking his father into the future.
05:00Yes.
05:00And no.
05:01Oh, okay.
05:02So in this movie, it's all about time travel.
05:04Okay.
05:04So what we're trying to do is get into it and time travel to where the other place was
05:10to kind of pick up all the people where they were.
05:13And you could reverse time and save some of the lives.
05:15Some of the people that you thought were dead in the first one are back in this one.
05:19And then our son, Gil, is lost in one of them.
05:22We're trying to figure out which Sharknado it is.
05:24And in this one, I could drive a Sharknado.
05:29How they thought of the things they thought of this one, it's just, like, another level.
05:33Is Gil still played by Dolph Lundgren?
05:36Yes.
05:37Amazing.
05:37Yes.
05:38Yeah, it's just, it's hilarious.
05:40Who are some of the other cameo appearances?
05:42There are so many.
05:43There was mostly a lot of, like, British stars, was a lot of them in it.
05:47Okay.
05:48It's funny because we don't get to work with the people in the cameos.
05:51Oh, yeah.
05:52So I didn't really have any scenes with them.
05:54I'm trying to think with people.
05:56I didn't really have any scenes with the cameos.
05:58It's mostly just me and Finn.
05:59Right.
05:59They're usually the extras that go inside of it.
06:02They're separate scenes.
06:03Yeah.
06:03Other movies we had, like, my favorite person I ever did one with would be Kelly Osbourne.
06:08But she was in the scene with me.
06:09Amazing.
06:09She was a friend of mine and she did a great job.
06:11But, yeah, but there's going to be a lot of cameos in this one for sure.
06:14But I just don't, I haven't gone over the list who it is.
06:17What's it like for you and Ian on set?
06:19Do you guys get some time to kind of play around or are you, like, pretty,
06:24because you're filming most of your scenes together, so you're pretty close.
06:28Yeah, there's, like, no playtime because what we're shooting a day would take,
06:31most movies shoot, like, you know, see, four pages a day.
06:34We're shooting, like, 30 pages a day.
06:36Wow.
06:37Because it's only 18 days I think we shoot the whole movie in.
06:40Really?
06:41Okay, so that was the first Sharknado was in 18 days too.
06:43Yeah, they're all like that.
06:44Yeah, they're all like that.
06:44Wow.
06:45Yeah, it's crazy.
06:45We're staying consistent with that.
06:47That's why it's so hard.
06:49And every day you're getting new pages.
06:51So you're like, well, I'm not going to memorize these pages this day
06:53because they're all going to turn tomorrow.
06:55So it's like they're readjusting the storyline every single day.
06:58Wow.
06:58We have no idea what the movie's going to turn out to look like.
07:01But in a certain way, I mean, we time travel, which this to me is just, I love this.
07:07I think it's so funny because it's so stupid.
07:09We time travel in a pot, like a big, like how you cook soup, in a huge soup pot.
07:15Okay.
07:15And so we're driving, like, you just see the soup pot, like, go through the air and we look glad.
07:19And I remember, we were shooting in Bulgaria, and it was so cold there, it was minus 30.
07:25We were dying.
07:27Like, we were freezing with our costume, like, shaking to death.
07:30And I remember just getting in the soup pot.
07:32We're like, do we have to get out of the soup pot?
07:34You wanted to say it.
07:36Why is it a soup pot that you're time traveling in?
07:39It's Sharknado.
07:40There's no answers.
07:42Every time you don't get something, they're like, Sharknado.
07:44You know, like, if someone doesn't answer your question, you're like, yeah, Sharknado.
07:48It's just anything.
07:49And we use it all the time, too.
07:51Because I'll ask, I'll be like, Anthony, we can't do this, you know, to the director.
07:55He said, this makes no sense.
07:56He's like, it's Sharknado.
07:57I'm like, oh, okay, yeah, you're right.
07:59Just release all expectations.
08:01Yeah, exactly.
08:02That's what the fans do, too.
08:03Yeah, and they know that.
08:04I think that's why the fans like it so much, because they see that, you know, it's outrageous.
08:09They see that it's completely, it takes you out of your everyday life.
08:13Like, this is a very hard time that people are alive with all the war and all the, like, racism going on and all the bullying going on.
08:21And so many things are just bad, you know, even from the weather.
08:25And one of the things I think that Sharknado does is people know it's so silly.
08:30They get together and they have Sharknado parties.
08:33It's got, like, it's that kind of movie.
08:34I never, ever remember going to a movie, like, watching, going to a movie for a party.
08:39Right.
08:39And every year people look at it, like, how they are with the Super Bowl.
08:42It's, like, the Sharknado week.
08:44And I can't tell you, like, thousands of people have Sharknado parties.
08:47That's excellent.
08:48Like, we have such a cult, like, it's a cult film.
08:52Yeah.
08:52It's amazing to me what happened with this little film.
08:55Yeah.
08:55It still blows my mind away.
08:56It really does.
08:57Can you give us a preview of any of the new weapons that will be used on the Sharks?
09:03Um, there's, I mean, you're always going to have film with a saw.
09:06That's what he does.
09:07The weaponry with me is just all the magic that happens, you know, because I have, like,
09:13a gadget hand, so I could, you know, take it off and put the saw on.
09:15Or then I could take it and lasers come out of me and I could put something in a circle,
09:19you know.
09:20I could fly.
09:21I could, so there's, like, my body and the different attachments on it are the different ways.
09:27Excellent.
09:27Yeah, it's pretty funny.
09:29Have you ever had an interaction with a real shark?
09:31No, I never have.
09:33Oh.
09:33You've never been curious to, like, be on vacation and go to one of those shark settings?
09:38I thought it was going to be, like, a shark tank.
09:41I thought about doing that.
09:43But somewhere, like, really warm, like the Bahamas, where they have, like, not the killer
09:47white sharks.
09:47Would you get in the cage?
09:48I think I would, you know, but not the great white that's going to, like, bite the cage
09:53open.
09:53I mean, I think the sharks would want to take a selfie with you.
09:56Yeah.
09:56Four quick questions before we go.
10:01First job that made you think, I've made it?
10:05American Pie, because I was on the cover of Rolling Stone.
10:09Oh, yes.
10:10A milestone.
10:10When I was on the cover of Rolling Stone, like, you can't get bigger than that.
10:14And I thought, ah, this is it.
10:16And then one time when I was shooting, I was living in New York City, and I had, and you
10:22know how they have the newspaper stands?
10:24And I was on four covers at the same time, and they were, like, all in the shops and the
10:28stands.
10:29And I remember walking by, like, no one realized it was me, and I had a baseball hat on, and
10:33I was like, oh my gosh, this is crazy.
10:36Excellent.
10:37What do you want the best day on the set of Sharknado 6?
10:40The day we wrap.
10:43That's when you get to take a bottle of a bath.
10:45You're like, oh God, thank God it's over.
10:48Last great piece of career advice you've gotten?
10:52Just to, you know, believe in yourself and stay strong, because it will come back to you.
10:57Like, life is a roller coaster, and karma, and just everything.
11:01And if you really believe in something hard enough and want it hard enough, you'll get
11:05it, you know?
11:06And I'm also a person that believes that if you put something out there to the universe,
11:10a lot of times, like, you know, people say, well, why didn't that happen?
11:14Like, did you ask it?
11:15You know?
11:16Like, so when you kind of ask the universe for something, they give you a sign back.
11:20Nice.
11:21Worst audition story?
11:24Oh, God.
11:24I was lucky in my life that very early on, after The Big Lebowski, I think, no, after
11:32American Pie was my last edition.
11:34Oh.
11:35And then the rest of all the movies I've done are offers.
11:38But I remember doing The Big Lebowski, I was so nervous, and I thought, I remember seeing
11:42Charlize Theron in the waiting room and Liv Tyler, and I'm like, yeah, right, like, I'm
11:46going to get this.
11:47And I was so nervous, and they're in the room, and I'm like, sitting there, I'm like, blow.
11:51I can't blow that far.
11:52But my leg was shaking like this, like, blow.
11:56I'm like, and they're like, calm down.
11:58And I thought, I walked out, I'm like, I'm never going to get that part.
12:02I'm like, I was shaking like a leaf.
12:03When you're nervous, you can't stop yourself from shaking.
12:05You can't help it.
12:05Say, we were holding the card, you're like this.
12:07Yeah.
12:08You know, and you could see it.
12:09So, you know, and then I thought, oh, no.
12:11And then I got a phone call.
12:13I got the part, and I was like, really?
12:14Like, how?
12:16You know?
12:16But I would say that was, like, the most nerve-wracking, and it actually worked in my favor.
12:20The worst ended up being the best.
12:21Yeah, totally.
12:22It's always like that.
12:23When you think something's going to be great, it's not.
12:26When you think something's going to be terrible, it's not that bad.
12:29You know?
12:29Excellent.
12:30That's an excellent, great piece of advice.
12:32Thank you so much for being here, Tara.
