'The Rings of Power' showrunners pushed back on a critic's suggestion the series isn't strongly rooted in J.R.R. Tolkien's work, and addressed those 'Game of Thrones' comparisons.

00:00The showrunners behind the Lord of the Rings TV series is opening up about the show's immense
00:04world and all those Game of Thrones comparisons. This episode of THR News is brought to you by
00:09Netflix presenting Squid Game for your Emmy consideration. During the Television Critics
00:14Association's semi-annual press tour on Friday, the team took issue when a reporter called the
00:19fantasy show only vaguely connected to author J.R.R. Tolkien's work compared to the Lord of
00:24the Rings movies. We don't feel that way. We feel like deep roots of this show are in the books
00:28and in Tolkien, and if we didn't feel that way, we'd all be terrified to sit up here.
00:32The Rings of Power is primarily based on the work of the novels, specifically the description of
00:37Middle-earth's second age, and includes younger versions of some of the immortal elven characters
00:42in the original trilogy. The showrunners point out their work on the project extends back 25 years,
00:47and they've closely collaborated with incredible scholars who have devoted their whole lives to
00:51Tolkien's work. The duo and the cast were also asked about the inevitable comparisons to HBO's
00:56Game of Thrones, whose prequel series, House of the Dragon, launches two weeks before Rings of
01:01Power. We don't think of the show in terms of what genre or other shows that might be out there.
01:06We think about Tolkien. His life's work was creating this world. This is Tolkien's Middle-earth and
01:10regions beyond Middle-earth, and we just wanted to be true to that and sort of drown out and forget
01:15about what might be happening in another realm someplace else. Actor Robert Arameo was also asked about the
01:21rivalry, given he played a young Ned Stark on Thrones before being cast in Rings of Power.
01:26I don't feel rivalry. The materials are so different. I love fantasy. So now we obviously
01:31get to watch more fantasy, which can never be a bad thing. The Lord of the Rings,
01:35The Rings of Power will premiere Friday, September 2nd on Prime Video.
01:39This could be the beginning of a new era.
