A shocking video from November 30, 2021 has resurfaced, showing Representative Ilhan Omar and other Muslim lawmakers blasting a wave of Islamophobic hate on Capitol Hill. In the video, Omar plays a chilling, expletive-filled voicemail she received after incendiary comments by GOP members-including Lauren Boebert’s infamous claim that Omar was "mistaken for a terrorist" inside Congress.
Now, the clip is going viral again as Donald Trump launches fresh attacks on Omar, reigniting long-running controversies and intensifying accusations of Islamophobia at the highest levels of U.S. politics.

00:00Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar and other Muslim members of Congress held a news conference
00:06to speak out against Islamophobic behavior, including recent comments from Colorado Rep.
00:13Lauren Boebert in a video suggesting that Rep. Omar was once mistaken as a terrorist
00:19on Capitol Hill.
00:21This is half an hour.
00:51Rep. Thank you, everyone, for showing up.
01:01Thank you to, we've been joined by Congressman Bowman from New York, thank you, sir.
01:08First and foremost, I want to commend my amazing colleagues, Representatives Ilhan Omar and
01:17Rashida Tlaib.
01:18You know, they're the definition of bravery, perseverance, dedication to their constituents.
01:27They're not just my colleagues, they're my friends, and most importantly, they're my sisters.
01:34You know, I stand here as a proud Muslim and a product of the black American Muslim experience
01:43whose presence predates the founding of this great nation.
01:47My story and that of my colleagues shows that this is truly the people's house.
01:53It's a place where all types of people should be accepted and ideas heard.
02:01Now this cannot be a place where members endure hateful, prejudiced attacks from their coworkers
02:09because of their faith.
02:10And that's exactly what's happening today.
02:13Representative Boebert has directed hateful and racist rhetoric against my colleague and
02:19friend, Congresswoman Omar.
02:22Her verbal abuse was insidinary and hurtful to her and Muslims across the country and the world.
02:29Now let's be clear, this is not about hurt feelings or mean-spirited words.
02:38This is about calling out individuals who deliberately incite violence and irresponsibly spread lies and misinformation.
02:48After a January 6th insurrectionist recently pleaded guilty to bringing an arsenal of weapons to the Capitol with a target list that included a Muslim congressman, yours truly.
03:03This is about recognizing that words have consequences and can incite violence.
03:09Now, this is also about ensuring the safety of the Muslim community.
03:15Hateful words against Muslims from elected officials and public figures emboldened many to engage in acts of violence that hurt our community.
03:27We cannot let this happen.
03:29We need accountability so that everyone knows that this violent speech is not okay and hatred
03:37will not be tolerated or celebrated.
03:41We're looking at a possible resolution to address our concerns and we're working with leadership on those details and we should have more to share later.
03:49But what is certain, we are committed to ensuring a real consequence for dangerous statements that fuel bigotry and incite violence,
04:01especially when it's coming from one of our own colleagues.
04:06Such comments are an insult to this institution and to American ideals of equality and freedom.
04:14The freedom of religion specifically means more than just the freedom to practice your own.
04:21It means that those who do not share your faith should let you practice it peacefully, free from attacks, free from bullying and free from malice.
04:33Now, unfortunately, Representative Boebert failed to live up to the founder's promise.
04:39Sadly, she's not the only House Republican to spew hateful rhetoric.
04:47Unfortunately, among some of our Republican buddies, this is an epidemic in their caucus.
04:57And quite frankly, and unfortunately, in legislative bodies across our great nation.
05:03Muslims in this country are proud Americans and hardworking members of our community.
05:09And we are not anyone's scapegoat.
05:14Every member of Congress should be focused on the critical issues that our constituents are facing.
05:23We should be working together to find solutions to help everyone recover from this pandemic, create jobs and reduce inequalities.
05:33Violent and hateful rhetoric doesn't help Americans one bit.
05:38It only seeks to divide us.
05:41Representative Boebert's words were inexcusable, dangerous and cannot be tolerated.
05:48If she has an interest to make a good faith effort to reach out to her Muslim American constituents in our community,
05:59she might learn about the people she has misjudged, insulted and threatened.
06:05I believe these constituents would like to see her do her job, not attack black and brown members of Congress.
06:12And to that, I bring up a great and fearless leader from the state of Michigan, the city of Detroit, Congresswoman Tlaib.
06:22Thank you so much to the dean of the Muslim caucus as we appointed you today.
06:28Thank you so much, Andre, for your courage and for also standing so strong with us.
06:36I'm here today not to only stand in support of my sister in service, who has had to face and respond to a long line of racist,
06:44Islamophobic, fear-mongering campaigns against her, but the hate-filled language spewed by Rep. Boebert is,
06:53unfortunately, just the most recent attack.
06:56I am also here today in support of the 3.45 million Muslim neighbors in our country,
07:04because it's also their lives that are put in grave danger when people like Rep. Boebert are allowed to use their national platform
07:12and elected office to spread hate and dangerous racist rhetoric that enables violence towards Muslims.
07:19Sadly, Islamophobia and hate crimes against Muslims are nothing new in our country.
07:24And I know that. I know that personally because I've seen it.
07:27But as a parent, I'm especially hurt by the presence of Islamophobia in Congress
07:32that sends something to our community, that tries to normalize it as if it's okay.
07:38And I really want to urge my Republican leadership to end this now, to the leadership, to end this now
07:44by condemning her statements and taking action to stop this racist, again, fear-mongering
07:48from a fellow member of the United States Congress and to hold colleagues accountable
07:53when they decide to cater to their worst mindsets for their own political gain.
07:57And to all my fellow Muslims that are listening, we may only be three among hundreds serving in Congress,
08:05but we are strong advocates that won't shy away in demanding better for our communities.
08:11No one deserves to feel hate or racism solely based on one's faith.
08:15It's completely unacceptable.
08:17With that, I will call my colleague, my wonderful, courageous colleague, sister in service again,
08:22Alhan Omar from Minnesota.
08:24Well, I want to start by thanking our dean, Congressman Andre Carson of Indiana,
08:41and my sister, Rashida Talib, and our adopted brother, Congressman Jamal Bowman.
08:54And I want to thank all of you for joining us here today.
09:00In the days following the tragic terror attack of September 11th, a member, a Muslim EMT,
09:11with the New York Fire Department, named Mohamed Salman Hamdani, was reported missing.
09:21His mother, Talib, desperate to find her son, appealed directly to the President of the United States.
09:33But instead of receiving assistance or sympathy, she received suspicion.
09:42Federal law enforcement came to his home and confiscated photos.
09:50Federal law enforcement put up wanted flyers for him.
09:57Their member of Congress interrogated them, saying Salman could be detained if found.
10:07The media swarmed their home with one tabloid headline reading,
10:15missing or hiding under a photo of Salman.
10:24Six months later, Salman Hadani's remains and medical equipment were discovered at Ground Zero.
10:38Salman, it turned out, saw the smoke coming out of the towers and hurried to the scene to help victims of that tragic day.
10:52After six months, his name was finally cleared and he was recognized as the hero he was.
11:02Not all of us are as heroic as Salman Hadani.
11:09But nearly every Muslim American has experienced this type of suspicion in their lives.
11:17Five years later, when the first Muslim American, Keith Ellison, was elected to Congress,
11:24his Republican colleagues sent a letter saying Americans need to, quote,
11:32wake up or else there will likely be many more Americans elected to office.
11:41And he was told on live TV, quote, to prove that he was not working with our enemies.
11:52My own experience was similar.
11:56When I first ran for public office, I was told to take off my hijab if I wanted to have the chance of winning my election.
12:07I was too Muslim, was the thinking.
12:12When I did eventually win, I remember winning my primary.
12:19And as people celebrated, worrying that if the Republicans ended up winning the majority,
12:26would I get the opportunity to be sworn in?
12:31Because I didn't trust that they would lift the ban that existed for 183 years in this country.
12:41And I remember getting a phone call the day after my election from now Speaker Pelosi.
12:49And her saying, congratulations, Ilhan, is there anything that we can help you with?
12:56And I said, Leader Pelosi, I am worried that now that I've won my election,
13:04they won't let me get sworn in as a member of Congress because I wear a hijab.
13:11And I remember her telling me not to worry about that because in the people's house that I, as a Muslim woman,
13:22regardless of my hijab, would have a place.
13:26On my first day, as I got sworn in,
13:35my colleague, my then colleague,
13:39Stephen King claimed another member
13:43said of my hijab
13:46that there might be four pounds of C4
13:51under it that would wipe out half of Congress.
14:03The truth is, is that Islamophobia
14:08pervades our culture, our politics,
14:12and even policy decisions.
14:15Cable news hosts,
14:17leading politicians in the Republican Party,
14:20routinely spout hateful rhetoric
14:24about a religion that includes
14:30a diverse group,
14:32more than a billion peaceful worshippers around the world.
14:39This includes falsely claiming Muslims want to replace the Constitution
14:45and implement Sharia law,
14:47betraying Muslims as inherently violent,
14:51suggesting that Muslim women are oppressed and that Muslims hate other religions.
14:57But the most pervasive is the constant suggestion that all Muslims are terrorists and should be feared.
15:06So when a sitting member of Congress calls a colleague member of the jihad squad
15:13and falsely and falsifies a story to suggest that I will blow up the Capitol,
15:21it is not just attack on me, but on millions of American Muslims across this country.
15:29We, of course, know that this isn't the first incident.
15:34In May, she said my colleagues and I are politicians with suicide belts strapped to their bodies.
15:43She asked if Congresswomen and I should register as foreign agents, invoking a hateful dual loyalty trope.
15:58And today we learned that she had fabricated a similar story about riding an elevator with me,
16:07calling me and Rashida evil and dark hearted.
16:11I wish I could say the Congresswoman was an outlier, but I cannot.
16:17During his campaign for presidency, Donald Trump said, and I quote,
16:22we have a problem in this country and it's called Muslims.
16:27He attacked Khazir and Ghazala Khan, the parents of slayed Muslim service member Kumayam Khan.
16:37He explicitly promised to ban anyone of Muslim faith from the country
16:45and then put forth a series of executive orders seeking to do just that.
16:51Meanwhile, we have Marjorie Taylor Greene, now a member of Congress,
17:01who came to my office in 2019, harassed my staff, demanding that my colleague Rashida Tlaib and I
17:11retake our oath of office on a Christian Bible.
17:17That says a lot about somebody who says she believes in the Constitution because she obviously hasn't read it.
17:25Just today, she called me a pro-Al Qaeda, bloodthirsty and an apologist for Islamic terrorists.
17:36We cannot pretend that this hate speech from leading politicians doesn't have real consequences.
17:44The truth is that anti-Muslim hate is on the rise both here at home and around the world.
17:52This summer, we witnessed a deadly anti-Muslim attack wipe out three generations of a Muslim family in Canada.
18:02In 2019, a white nationalist opened fire at multiple mosques in New Zealand, killing over 50 people.
18:12The first half of this year alone saw over 500 incidents of anti-Muslim hate here in the United States.
18:22I myself have reported hundreds of threats on my life, often triggered by Republican attacks on my faith.
18:33And this week, once again, we saw another increase.
18:39I'm going to play you a voicemail that we received hours after I got off the phone with Representative Boebert after she posted her video.
18:56We see you Muslim san-nigger bitch.
19:00We know what you're up to.
19:01You're all about to end the country.
19:03Don't worry, there's a plane that will love the opportunity to take you off the face of the fucking earth.
19:14Come get it bitch, you fucking Muslim piece of shit, you jihadists.
19:20We know what you are. You're a fucking freighter. You will not live much longer, bitch. I can almost guarantee you that we the people are rising up, and you will be tried for a military tribunal, and you will be found guilty.
19:40For those of you who did not hear it very well, let me read you what the voicemail says.
19:49We see you, sand and word, bitch. We know what you are up to. You are all about taking over our country.
20:00Don't worry. There is plenty that would love the opportunity to take you off the face of this effing earth. Come get it.
20:13But you are effing Muslim piece of shit. You are jihadist.
20:22We know what you are. You are effing traitor, and you will not live any longer.
20:30Condemning this should not be a partisan issue.
20:39This is about our basic humanity and fundamental rights of religious freedom enshrined in our Constitution.
20:48Yet while some members of the Republican Party have condemned this, to date, the Republican Party leadership has done nothing to hold their members accountable.
21:01It is time for the Republican Party to actually do something, to confront anti-Muslim hatred in its ranks, and hold those who perpetuate it accountable.
21:15And that should never be something that a Muslim woman or a girl in this country has to contemplate if she wants to enter public life.
21:41Because I know that when we proudly stand up for our values, when we celebrate the diversity of this country, and the freedoms enshrined in our Constitution, others stand with us.
21:58And so today, we are asking for our colleagues to stand up, and to stand with us.
22:13Maybe we'll have Congressman Jamal Bowman say a few words.
22:17I didn't expect to speak, I just wanted to stand in solidarity with my colleagues.
22:28I stand in solidarity with them as a non-Muslim, and I ask and call for all non-Muslims across this country and around the world to stand with them.
22:40We're standing in love and support of the millions of Muslims in this country, and the billions around the world.
22:49Islamophobia is a disease that has been around for far too long, and it's something we need to attack and end with the vigor that we attack other diseases that continue to persist in this country,
23:05like racism, anti-Semitism, sexism, and discrimination against the LGBTQ community.
23:15It's my honor to be here, standing with my colleagues, and I will do everything in my power to continue to support them, and to fight against this terrible disease.
23:25I'm worried about the degradation of our values and of our psychology as a nation as our Republican colleagues continue to fan the flames of racial hate and conflict
23:43and where that is leading us in a post-Trump era.
23:48This is a time that's very worrisome, but it's a time for all of us to stand up and speak up very loudly against hate and discrimination in all its forms.
24:01So I'm just here to do that with my colleagues, and I will continue to do that, and I will continue to be in support of them.
24:13Is that for me?
24:14Representative Omar.
24:15Representative Omar.
24:16Come on, man, you're the dean.
24:18I know, I'm like, uh...
24:21Yes, sir.
24:23Salam alaykum.
24:26Second of all, just last, just two weeks ago, Representative Gosar was censured and had his committee script,
24:33and then you obviously said you did not, you obviously released a statement yesterday saying you would not accept,
24:38I mean, essentially not accepting Representative Boebert's apology.
24:42What would be the substantive actions you want to see from Representative Boebert,
24:45and do you want to see another censorship of Representative Boebert or her losing her committee memberships
24:51in the way that Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene was and Representative Gosar was?
24:54No, I'm deferring to the dean because the dean has been working with leadership to find the appropriate resolution.
25:13What we do know, and what we do know, and what we will say, is that this kind of hateful rhetoric and actions cannot go without punishment.
25:23There has to be accountability.
25:26I remember reading this statement after the last censure from Speaker Pelosi,
25:32and I remember her explicitly saying that we have to restore honor and decency,
25:41and if and when the Republican conference fails to do so, it is going to be our job to do that.
25:57Yes, ma'am.
25:59Congressman Omar, I'm wondering if you've personally heard from anyone in House GOP leadership apologizing
26:04or offering any sort of heartfelt message to you in the wake of these comments.
26:14I think the only Republican I have seen speak up, current Republican speak up on this,
26:21has been Adam Kissinger.
26:23I have not heard from Republican leadership, and I have not heard from any other Republican as well.
26:31Why do you think it's so, why do you think that Minority Leader McCarthy has been silenced so repeatedly
26:37on these sorts of outbursts we've seen from Republicans in this conference?
26:44I can't speak for him.
26:48You have to ask him this question.
26:50What I will say is that the silence speaks for itself.
26:54If they want to get rid of this kind of toxic, hateful behavior in their conference,
27:06they have to take action.
27:09Congresswoman Omar.
27:10Yes, ma'am, and then you, sir.
27:12Ma'am.
27:13So would a resolution against Islamophobia be enough in your mind,
27:19like a reprimand or something like that?
27:24We have already passed resolutions condemning Islamophobia.
27:28This is a problem that exists within the Republican conference,
27:33and that is the problem that needs to get addressed.
27:36Should they be expelled?
27:38Yes, sir.
27:39Congresswoman Omar, what do you think is the appropriate punishment
27:43for Representative Wilbert's conduct?
27:46I will say that my call has been for there to be an appropriate action taken.
27:56The decision on what it would be deemed for it to be appropriate
28:05and to bring back decency and honor to this House
28:10is something that leadership has to decide.
28:14Two more questions, ma'am.
28:19Is expulsion, do you think, appropriate in this instance?
28:25I think it's appropriate for us to ask the question,
28:29should such behavior be allowed,
28:32and is it becoming of a member of the House to behave this way?
28:39And when that question is answered,
28:41then the appropriate action can be taken.
28:45Yeah, thank you.
28:47By the way, thank you for holding this event
28:48and sharing what is obviously a very difficult moment.
28:51I did want to ask you, though, on some level,
28:54do you think that you are giving Representative Boebert what she seeks,
28:58which is a bigger platform, notoriety, publicity,
29:03and the ability to use that to raise more money
29:06and further her own political prospects?
29:11That is a really good question,
29:14and I think a lot of us think about that.
29:16And, you know, I look back to the hate
29:23that my predecessor endured.
29:29And I know that many of you,
29:31even the statements that I've read out
29:33of the things that he's experienced,
29:35both from former colleagues of the Minnesota delegation,
29:40from the media, from other members,
29:44you have not probably heard of those statements.
29:47You probably don't know it happened.
29:51And I think if we continue to make the choice to stay silent,
29:56the behavior continues, and it continues to cause harm.
30:01We know that in almost all the incidents
30:03that have taken place in the last few years,
30:06whether it is the deadly incident in Australia, New Zealand,
30:14or it is the deadly incidents that have taken place in Canada,
30:19Republican pundits have been quoted
30:26in the manifestos of those killers.
30:30And this is what happens when we don't call out
30:34this kind of hateful rhetoric.
30:38It takes hold.
30:39These people are speaking to an audience already.
30:43They are festering hate.
30:46And I have said time and time again,
30:49there is a through line between what is said about me
30:53by Republican pundits,
30:55what my colleagues have said,
30:57what the former president have said,
31:01and the death threats that I receive,
31:05and the people that are already incarcerated
31:07for threatening my life.
31:11And so, no,
31:12I can't worry about whether I am giving her a platform or not.
31:16I am worried about the number of Muslim lives
31:20that are at risk,
31:21and what is it that we can do to protect them.
31:24Yeah, it's not an option to ignore it
31:27because it might help her raise money.
31:30I know this.
31:31I'm raising two Muslim boys in our country.
31:33We all have children.
31:34I want them to see Muslim leadership in Congress
31:37speaking out against hate rhetoric,
31:38dangerous, violent rhetoric like this.
31:40And we're here,
31:41and we can't be silent about it.
31:43And trying to look at it through a political lens
31:45versus that humanity lens
31:47that is really critically important,
31:48I hope that young Muslims are listening to us right now
31:52to know that the majority of Congress
31:55hopefully do not support that rhetoric
31:58and that kind of Islamophobic trope
32:01that is ensuing that somehow we are dangerous
32:04in our country,
32:07and all of the things that come out
32:08and spew out from just some of those lines.
32:11So I hear you
32:12because folks constantly ask us that question.
32:15Of course, we worry about this enabling
32:17or emboldening somebody,
32:20but those folks are continuing emboldening.
32:22This is not the first time
32:23and will not be the last time
32:25until she's held accountable.
32:26And then sends a message to the rest of our colleagues
32:29that this is unacceptable.
32:31And again, I just want my sons
32:33that are watching right now
32:35to know that, no, you belong here.
32:38You are loved to all the Muslims.
32:40You do not deserve this,
32:42no matter what the political,
32:43you know, it's a game and chip
32:45that's happening out there.
32:46We, as you said, beautifully deemed,
32:49we're not a scapegoat.
32:50You can't raise money
32:52off of violence towards us enough.
32:55And so I'm proudly standing here and saying,
32:57I'd rather us speak out and do what's right
33:00than worry about some of those kind of dynamics
33:03that continue to play behind closed doors anyways.
33:06And so it is so important, I think,
33:08especially all the Muslims out there
33:09that really need us to speak up against it.
33:11Well, I just want to say I'm so proud.
33:14Thank you, Brother Jamal.
33:14And thank you to both Congresswomen
33:17and congressmen for showing up.
33:19I just want to say this to my Republican buddies
33:21who are obsessed with the Founding Fathers.
33:24We all know the story about Mrs. Powell
33:26who confronted Ben Franklin
33:28at the Constitutional Convention
33:29and raised the point,
33:31do you have a monarchy or a republic?
33:34And he replied,
33:35we have a republic if you can keep it.
33:37The question becomes,
33:38how do you keep the republic?
33:39You keep the republic by standing up to your membership.
33:43You keep the republic by making sure
33:44you aren't so obsessed with
33:46what the congressional maps will look like
33:48that you tolerate Islamophobia and xenophobia.
33:51You keep the republic by not being obsessed
33:54with fundraising and maybe the house will shift
33:57and maybe you'll be the next one in leadership
33:59or maybe the next speaker.
34:01You keep the republic by standing up for your constituents
34:04and realizing that Muslims have been a part of this country
34:08since its inception.
34:10Go to any major hospital,
34:12you'll find a Muslim physician.
34:14Go to a major courtroom,
34:16you'll find a Muslim lawyer,
34:17maybe a judge.
34:19You'll find Muslim engineers.
34:21We love this country.
34:229-11, the untold story
34:23about counterterrorism efforts
34:25is that there are so many attempted attacks
34:28that are thwarted
34:29because Muslims are in our police services
34:32and law enforcement
34:33helping to protect Americans.
34:35And with that, we thank you.
