Academy Museum Gala 2024 honoree, Paul Mescal, says working with Pedro Pascal on 'Gladiator 2' was like having a wonderful friend on set, and says a 'Wicked' and 'Gladiator 2' "Barbenheimer" moment would be amazing.

00:00Congratulations. What does it mean to get this Academy recognition tonight?
00:05It's a huge, huge honor. It's not something that I like.
00:10When the offer came in, it's not something I'm expecting.
00:14And honestly, it was somewhat reticent because I didn't understand the context of it.
00:17And then when it was about somebody kind of at the infancy of their careers
00:21and kind of trying to establish what the career means to them
00:24and what they hoped, it made more sense.
00:27And I'm just really proud to get to express what this job and this industry means to me.
00:33Gladiator's kind of out in the world now, as of last night.
00:36It's starting to come out in the world.
00:39I didn't even know the kind of social reactions were going to be released yesterday, thankfully.
00:45But I think it's gone down really well. Yeah. So onwards.
00:50What was it like shooting those scenes with Pedro?
00:52I mean, Pedro's a king. Like there's no, he's just such a, he's such a warm energy.
00:57He's obviously such an incredibly talented man, but like, he's a real, um,
01:01he's got a, he's got a wonderful kind of paternal and he's a wonderful friend to have on set.
01:07And he kind of keeps everybody even keeled.
01:10Yeah. And we've heard a lot about these sets being built kind of very grandly.
01:14What was it like kind of stepping into that for the first time?
01:17The set in Morocco was kind of the big introduction to me into the scale of what we were expecting.
01:23And then I think actually, weirdly as the film was coming to a close, I started to take it in again.
01:28I was like, Oh, this is probably something that I won't ever see again or to the scale.
01:34Like it's not common anymore. Yeah.
01:37And is Gladiator and Wicked going to be the next Barbenheimer?
01:40I don't want to jinx anything. Like how amazing would that be for this industry?
01:44Especially on a night like tonight. Like I think that was such a massive moment for the industry last year.
01:49And if we can replicate anything next year near that, it would be huge. Yeah, it would be huge.
01:55Great. Thanks very much.
01:57Thanks very much.
