00:01There's a lot in this show about interpersonal conflict
00:04and personal trauma.
00:05It's not about a bunch of people fighting a clown.
00:07It's the everyday fights of a family,
00:10of a group of friends, and a community.
00:15In my episode, the darkness of the sewer
00:18has certainly affected the Hanlon family
00:20as it has affected everyone else.
00:22So from now on, you don't leave your room
00:24without my permission.
00:25Do you understand?
00:27No.
00:28I love that scene.
00:29It's probably the first time that Will has ever said no to his father.
00:33He's finding his own strength.
00:34No!
00:35He's finding his own identity.
00:37When Leroy strikes him...
00:39I would never let my friends die!
00:41The ground is just taken out from under him.
00:44Blake has a beautiful relationship with both of his parents.
00:46We used his relationship with his own parents
00:49to sort of find a way that none of that existed
00:52with his screen father.
00:55Mr. Javon, I remember him.
00:57He didn't want to, like, come off as, like, abusive
01:00or anything like that.
01:01So he kind of made that change to his character,
01:03which I admire.
01:04I'm sorry, Sean.
01:05I had to find a way to justify Leroy striking Will.
01:08Leroy was stung by what Will said.
01:11Having to carry Polly's dead body out of the sewers,
01:14that was the beginning of Leroy's unraveling.
01:18It's one of the big arcs of the series.
01:21It's a family that is not perfect.
01:22A family that has dysfunctions.
01:24Stuff that families are made of.
01:27Lily?
01:30We had a lot of conversations about this Ingrid character.
01:33But the more we sort of built out Ingrid,
01:35the more we said, well, wait a second.
01:36What if she's, like so many things in Derry,
01:38what if she's not who she seems to be?
01:40Have you seen him?
01:42Oh, sweetheart, you did it.
01:45Ingrid has this delusion that it possessed her dad
01:50and that she will be able to liberate him.
01:53This poor kid started her life in a circus,
01:56performing with her dad as little Perry Winkle.
01:59When she realizes it's time for him to come back,
02:02she basically helps Pennywise get what he wants
02:07with the sole intention of being with him
02:09and seeing him.
02:14The 1935 sequence was a great opportunity
02:17to shift the style of the show.
02:19The camera's often very active in the 1960s story.
02:24It felt exciting to move the camera less,
02:28to make it about stationary frames that tell the story
02:32in a heightened way that references film history.
02:35We weren't going for sheer realism in this sequence.
02:38There's an air of melodrama to it
02:40that I thought was appropriate coming from Ingrid's perspective.
02:44Once Lily finds out Ingrid was plotting against all the kids,
02:48it takes a big toll on her.
02:49The entirety of the relationship wasn't real.
02:51That was really hard for her.
02:53You have two characters who seem very bonded
02:56and have great trust in one another.
02:59And suddenly you see their parallel tracks go a different way.
03:03It's quite beautiful and it's terrifying at the same time.
03:06Lily!
03:08This thing I got, let me see things.
03:18What kind of things?
03:20Dead ones.
03:21After the sewers, Dick is never the same in life.
03:24Like it breaks him in a way
03:26and it makes him have to put up a different kind of guard.
03:28In the torture of seeing all the worst things on earth at once
03:32that you were hiding from.
03:34And that's what Dick is living.
03:36It was just an incredible opportunity to sort of explore Dick's new predicament.
03:43He sees dead people.
03:45So the lensing on Dick changed.
03:47If he looks up, he sees dead people.
03:49If he listens, he hears dead people.
03:52I wanted it to feel claustrophobic.
03:55You good?
03:57Yeah.
03:58The black spot was Dick's attempt to find a safe space for black soldiers.
04:02It's a loud space.
04:03So even when the demon's awake, when he starts to see people,
04:06the noise helps keep it quiet for him.
04:09So it's just a place where he can feel a little bit normal.
04:15We wanted to be very careful to honor the book,
04:17take Easter eggs and expand upon them
04:20to really honor the fans and their dedication to the lore.
04:24In the book, the black spot is a space for fun, for music, for dancing.
04:30So it's a space of unity that is unusual in the era.
04:34I love the black spot because, first of all, that's like our hangout.
04:38Our community is a black community.
04:40And it's like a really fun party place.
04:42I was playing the drums.
04:44I had a drum coach.
04:46And I kind of got the hang of it.
04:48Everybody's having like a fun time, you know, singing, dancing.
04:53Marge is drinking.
04:55I loved filming the dancing part, like doing the 60s moves.
05:00Marge has just told off the patty cakes and had her moment.
05:04And she's feeling it.
05:05And Rich and her are kind of having their moment.
05:08Our characters are feeling joy like we've not seen them experience so far in the season.
05:12I wanted to create a sense of impending doom.
05:19Grogan.
05:20I know where he's hiding and it ain't the rail yards.
05:22The masked men, led by Clint, are coming.
05:27It was all about graphic compositions.
05:29We have a high angle shot as all the cars pull in.
05:33Our characters don't even know who they are, but they come out of these trucks and cars with guns and terrifying masks.
05:40You can see all the pieces moving.
05:42You can see the wheels turning.
05:44Everything is an orchestration.
05:46This trajectory is about to collide and it becomes very tense.
06:10That's why I'm so confused.
06:12You can see how many people are currently running around for the next day.
06:15You can see them at the end of the night.
06:19You can see them at the end of the night.
06:22Let's see how they're in the night.
06:23My details are the utmost.
06:25Mm-hm.
06:26It looks very tense.
06:28I could not see what they're in the night.
