00:00Hello everybody, welcome to WhatCultureGaming. I'm Scott, joined by...
00:03Hello, Scott.
00:04Hello, sir, and I almost did a little point to him there,
00:06because lots of exciting things going on.
00:08In regards to a PlayStation 5 Pro,
00:10now there's some details coming from Red Gaming Tech,
00:13a YouTube channel who's leaked a whole bunch of different stuff,
00:15including a release date and some supposed power specs for the console itself.
00:18This has also been corroborated by various sources online,
00:21which just seems like it's the real deal.
00:23If you look at the time frame when Sony released the PlayStation 4 Pro,
00:26that was in 2016, the PS4 dropped in 2013,
00:29so a three-year window lines up with what's now being talked about
00:32as a 2023 release date for the PS5 Pro, PS5 Professional Pro System.
00:38You got it, you got it.
00:39The earliest is the end of 2023, they're also looking at 2024,
00:42but it seems like it'll be around the end for the release date,
00:44but what do you think of this whole thing?
00:46Scott, I don't want to hear about a PlayStation 5 Pro, quite frankly,
00:49and it's not because I'm against the whole idea of a mid-gen refresh.
00:53I was a huge, huge fan of the PS4 Pro,
00:56but like our friend and colleague Joe Johnson said before we started filming,
01:00the PlayStation 5 hasn't happened yet.
01:02Lots of people have a PlayStation 5.
01:04I think it's slightly under 19 million, or it was the last time I checked the stats,
01:09but in many ways, in many respects, it doesn't feel like this generation has started
01:13because the PlayStation 5 isn't readily available.
01:16Thanks to the chip shortage and all of that stuff,
01:18there are so many people who still can't get one,
01:20or are on a long, long waiting list for it.
01:23So if I was one of those people, if I wasn't lucky enough to get this PlayStation 5,
01:27and I heard that they were talking about a PS5 Pro, I'd say you can stick it.
01:31I would be a bit miffed.
01:32To be honest, I don't know if you know, but you know, Sony believe in generations,
01:35so they're going to push ahead regardless.
01:37Now we'll go through the details, the specs that are out there,
01:39and then we'll break down the absolute madness of them pushing forward with this thing,
01:43despite the fact that the next big exclusive on PlayStation 5 is still going to be on PS4.
01:47There's all that stuff as well.
01:49So the actual leaked specs for this thing are that it'll be 2.5 times more powerful
01:53than the existing PlayStation 5.
01:55We'll throw some of the specs on screen because it's a whole bunch of technological gubbins
01:58that we don't know what it all means, but some PC people will.
02:01But the console will, in theory, be able to do native 4K,
02:04much higher frame rates across the board.
02:06It's also going to be massively geared towards PlayStation VR too.
02:09It seems like that new tech needs an upgrade in regards to the hardware it's pulling from in the first place.
02:14So there's that.
02:15Sony are also apparently making their own in-house alternatives
02:18to AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution FSR, don't know what it means,
02:22and also NVIDIA's DLSS, which is their Deep Learning Super Sampling tech,
02:26which is also apparently coming to the Nintendo Switch Pro.
02:29The DLSS software is a software-based solution to up-resing image quality, basically,
02:34in the most basic terms overall.
02:37And, yeah, apparently Sony are also looking to do their version of Super Sampling,
02:40which will be exclusive to the PlayStation 5.
02:42So lots of things that just mean more of a higher resolution, smoother games,
02:46better-looking games.
02:47But, like you said, the PS5's barely happened.
02:50So this feels like a stupid time to move forward.
02:52It's like I look at these specs and I look at the idea of a PlayStation 5 Pro,
02:54and I will buy it because I do want those high resolutions.
02:57I do want those more stable frame rates.
02:59I want to be able to play games in native 4K at 60fps.
03:03I just want that out of this generation, and we don't have that at the moment.
03:07At least not when you throw in ray tracing on top.
03:09I hate performance modes.
03:11I hate picking.
03:12I hate the Ghostwire Tokyo has like six modes.
03:15What are we doing?
03:16Scott thinks this is the end of culture, and I'm not entirely against it either,
03:20because it is a lot at the moment to take in.
03:22And a lot of the changes do kind of seem incremental in a lot of ways.
03:26You know, it's ray tracing on, it's quality mode between a performance mode,
03:29and sometimes you can't quite tell the difference, as is the case on something like Elden Ring.
03:34What are we doing?
03:35Where you're like, okay, the frame rate is slightly better,
03:37but what am I losing, what am I gaining?
03:39It's a little bit obscure.
03:40So hopefully, you know, more powerful hardware will eventually remedy that.
03:43Yes.
03:44But to me, this story isn't about the specs.
03:47It's not about, you know, if it's real.
03:49It's about whether or not Sony should be pushing ahead with it at all at this stage.
03:53You know, if it's a good few years out, say three years out, then maybe that's going to be okay.
03:58But if they're going to turn this around within the space of, you know, one or two.
04:01The end of next year.
04:02The end of next year, like this says, you know what I mean?
04:04Like, that just seems incredibly, incredibly soon.
04:07But at this moment in time, like I said, if I was someone who hadn't got a PlayStation 5,
04:11I'd be a little bit annoyed that we're already talking about the PlayStation 5 Pro.
04:14The thing is, like obviously, we got PlayStation 4 Pros, like PlayStation 4 Pros.
04:18And like you said, you were a big fan of it.
04:19I just got it because I was like, I might as well.
04:21I've got the 4K TV.
04:22I bought into that whole thing.
04:23It was a Black Friday sale.
04:24And I was like, why not?
04:25And I got into that stuff.
04:26But I don't think they ever made anything that fundamentally took advantage of the PS4 Pro.
04:30I know that it obviously smooths out frame rates and resolutions,
04:32but I don't think that any devs were actually given the time to make something just for the PlayStation 4 Pro.
04:37No.
04:38This is in the same regard.
04:39I don't feel like any devs are making anything just for the PlayStation 5,
04:42let alone then jumping to the PS5 Pro,
04:44which will be a system that you're buying for just smoother frame rates and resolutions.
04:47Yeah.
04:48Which ties back into my whole hatred of sliders and different little finicky little...
04:52If you tweak this, it's a bit smoother here.
04:54But if you zoom in on the puddle, there's a bit more resolution.
04:56I despise that stuff.
04:57Well, this is where we kind of disagree.
04:58I just want games made for the console, Josh Brown.
05:01This is where we disagree,
05:02because I don't want them to make games just for the PlayStation 5 Pro.
05:06I don't want them to split the player base already, you know what I mean?
05:09I don't think that's fair for a next generation system.
05:11Like, I'm fine with it being incremental.
05:14I'm fine with it being more maybe for the hardcore,
05:16like a premium version of the PlayStation 5 experience,
05:20where you can get those more stable frame rates,
05:22you can get that bigger resolution bump,
05:24but it's not going to make or break your experience.
05:25You're not going to be playing a PlayStation 5 game on the base machine
05:28and thinking, I'm not getting a good version of this.
05:31It depends on what you view as significant.
05:33For me, the higher frame rates, the more stable,
05:36the better resolution and stuff.
05:38To me, that's worth the upgrade.
05:40And especially when you throw in PSVR 2,
05:42you know, that's obviously unproven.
05:44But a big reason as to why I bought the PlayStation 4 Pro
05:46was because I was a huge fan of the PSVR,
05:49and it gave it better support, you know.
05:51It was just a better experience to play PSVR on the PlayStation 4 Pro.
05:54So to me, there are pros to getting this new machine,
05:59but obviously some people might look at that and just think,
06:01that's not worth the money.
06:03That's fine.
06:04I feel like they've not really shown off
06:06why you should buy a PlayStation 5 in the first place.
06:08Like, there are many reasons that we can come up with
06:10as to why it's a good quality of life system upgrade,
06:13but when most people ask me which system should I get,
06:15I point them in Xbox's direction, I say,
06:17go get Game Pass and go enjoy the insane plethora of titles over there.
06:20It's not a knock against the PlayStation 5's UI,
06:23or the titles that are available over there,
06:25but I feel like they've not held something up and gone,
06:27this is why you need a PlayStation 5.
06:28Only the PS5 can do this thing.
06:30Yeah.
06:31You know, Horizon gets close, but it's also on PS4,
06:33and that game looks gorgeous on PlayStation 4.
06:35So I'm still waiting for something to be like,
06:37this is the reason you bought in,
06:38this is the reason you splurged half a grand on this thing,
06:41rather than them pushing ahead with other potential premium systems.
06:44For someone like me, again, it's my problem with all the slider stuff,
06:47it's just going to make me go,
06:48well, I should probably be gaming here because I want the best experience.
06:51I think the feeling of this generation hasn't started yet
06:54comes down to the fact that people can't get the console,
06:57but also the fact that, like you said,
06:58the biggest PlayStation 4 games,
07:00well, the biggest PlayStation 5 games are the biggest PlayStation 4 games.
07:03Horizon, Gran Turismo, the upcoming God of War and stuff.
07:06And it's going to be next year, at the earliest,
07:10that we get these big games that are PlayStation 5 exclusive,
07:14you know, your Spider-Man 2s, your Wolverines and stuff like that.
07:18I feel like just devs aren't like,
07:19they haven't even been given the window of opportunity
07:21to take full advantage of the PlayStation 5.
07:23But honestly, if you look at any console cycle,
07:25look at Naughty Dog,
07:26look at what they were putting out at the beginning of the PlayStation 3 run,
07:29like look at Uncharted and look at The Last of Us.
07:31And any dev takes time to get used to the hardware,
07:33and then they're moving on to the next thing again.
07:35And it's like, just let them take advantage of the hardware that they have.
07:38Yeah.
07:39Have longer cycles. You don't need to do this yet.
07:40That's it, man. That's it.
07:41I think like the cycle for this generation, you know,
07:44for better or worse, I do think needs to be longer
07:46because it does feel like right now
07:48that we haven't had that migration to the next gen.
07:51And like you said, developers are releasing, you know,
07:53their first games for it, you know, this year, next year.
07:56Of course, we got a couple last year as well.
07:58But yeah, like you say, you know,
07:59the difference between an Uncharted 1 and A Last of Us is vast.
08:03And the more that devs get to experiment with and release games,
08:07the better those games are going to be.
08:08So to continue throwing on hardware on top of that,
08:11I do see it pointing out.
08:12I also think that it's just, is their business model now?
08:14Whether they're just going to do half-step systems
08:16because they got away with it with the PS4 Pro.
08:18The sales weren't incredible for the PS4 Pro,
08:20but maybe they were enough.
08:21I don't want the gaming hardware cycle to mimic a tech cycle
08:26where, you know, like a new phone every year,
08:28like, you know, an half-step system,
08:29or like in Samsung Galaxy's case,
08:31it's the fan edition of the same phone,
08:32which is slightly stripped down or whatever.
08:34It's not that those things don't serve purposes,
08:36but in regards to applying it to a gaming model,
08:38I don't think you should have to buy a new console every three years.
08:41No, I fully agree with that.
08:43However...
08:44But then they're also going to say,
08:45well, you don't need it because it's only framework.
08:46That's it, yeah.
08:47They're going to say that you don't need it.
08:49It's not a next-gen system.
08:50You know, we are migrating things over.
08:52We're not just making PlayStation 5 Pro things.
08:55I'm with you.
08:56I don't ever want to see it, you know, mimic the mobile space
08:58where we're getting different SKUs, you know,
09:01over and over again every single year
09:03so that it's slightly tweaked.
09:04However, a mid-gen refresh for me is a long time
09:07because generations, they last a long time.
09:09They last like, you know, six to eight to maybe ten years,
09:12and if you can get a next-gen refresh in there,
09:15to me that's a good thing.
09:16Do it once, halfway through the life cycle.
09:19The only reason I have an issue with this
09:21is because this generation has started under
09:23extremely weird circumstances with a pandemic,
09:25then a chip shortage, and like you say,
09:28games not coming out for PS5 exclusively and reliably.
09:31That's the only reason I'm against it in this specific instance.
09:35Otherwise, across the board, good.
09:37PlayStation Pro, good.
09:38My whole thing, it just breaks my head
09:40because I'm just like, you're going to make this thing
09:41that does a better version, a better idea
09:43of whatever the devs were going for,
09:45but it's also not essential.
09:46You don't need it.
09:47You can stick with the one that you've got,
09:48but also we're going to develop in a way
09:49that means that it should be able to take advantage
09:50of the hardware,
09:51and I just scream internally for a while
09:53because I'm never going to be able to play the version
09:54of the game that the devs would like me to play,
09:56which is all I ever want in the first place.
09:57That's PCs, baby.
09:58I hate PCs.
09:59How do you even spell them?
10:00Let me know what you think down in the comments below
10:02of the PlayStation 5 Pro and the supposed specs
10:03that it's going to have.
10:04For now, I'm Scott from WhatCulture.com.
10:05I'm Scott from WhatCulture.com.
10:06I'm Josh from WhatCulture.com.
10:07And we'll catch you next time.
