00:00:00She just goes a little mad sometimes.
00:00:05We all go a little mad sometimes.
00:00:08Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the scary movie revelations that left you shocked and terrified.
00:00:15If it wasn't clear already, expect some major spoilers ahead.
00:00:20I see dead people.
00:00:24Number 75. Demons are real.
00:00:28Frailty.
00:00:29Twists on top of twists come out in the final act of this horror drama.
00:00:33We're talking mixed identities, serial killers, and a final grisly murder on top.
00:00:38God knew. That's why you sent me.
00:00:41But the one that outshines them all is that demons are, well, real.
00:00:46Frailty spends most of its runtime convincing you the Meek's patriarch has become a mad religious zealot.
00:00:51However, the implication at the end is that he was right all along.
00:00:55His victims were actually demons.
00:00:57And all the barbaric murders he committed were for the greater good.
00:01:01It doesn't make them easier to stomach, but it is something.
00:01:04Everything okay, Adam?
00:01:08Everything's just fine, Becky.
00:01:12God's will has been served.
00:01:15Praise God.
00:01:16Number 74. Time Doorways.
00:01:19Paranormal Activity. The Marked Ones.
00:01:21All the way back in the very first Paranormal Activity, we saw Meekka chase his possessed wife Katie downstairs,
00:01:28only for his screams to suddenly die off.
00:01:31Meekka!
00:01:33Katie!
00:01:35No!
00:01:36It took many years and five films, but we finally got an answer to what Meekka really saw that night.
00:01:44The answer isn't Katie, it's Jessie, the protagonist of The Marked Ones.
00:01:48This spinoff introduced the concept of time doorways, which allowed malevolent witches to cause mayhem all across the series timeline.
00:01:56Like, for example, throwing Jessie into Meekka and Katie's kitchen from the first film.
00:02:11It's a great twist, and one that answers a long-standing fan question to boot.
00:02:16Number 73. Nancy's Fate. The Craft.
00:02:19Four teenagers, one coven, and a whole lot of magical mayhem.
00:02:24In a nutshell, that's The Craft.
00:02:26And as you can imagine, this cauldron overflows with drama fast.
00:02:30Relax, it's only magic.
00:02:36Now who's pathetic?
00:02:39So much so that leading Lady Sarah binds the other's powers for good.
00:02:44Only, she doesn't stop there.
00:02:45While Bonnie and Rochelle are left powerless, Nancy finds herself all the way in a psychic ward.
00:02:51To be fair, she did try to steal Sarah's boyfriend and then threw him out the window to his death.
00:02:55But still, seeing her helplessly committed makes you wonder who the real villain of this movie is supposed to be.
00:03:01I'm flying! I'm flying!
00:03:05I'm flying! I'm flying!
00:03:08Number 72. Alex is Dead. The Uninvited.
00:03:12Grief can do a lot to a person.
00:03:14For Anna and Alex, the untimely death of their mother sent them on a crusade for justice.
00:03:19She's trying to kill us and marry our father just like she did to them.
00:03:22They point the finger at their dad's new girlfriend, Rachel, who seemingly kidnaps the girls to keep them quiet.
00:03:28When they fight back, the truth comes out.
00:03:30Alex died in the same accident as their mother.
00:03:33Unable to bear the weight of the tragedy, the mentally unstable Anna hallucinated Rachel's guilt.
00:03:38While The Uninvited is a very mixed bag overall, this last-minute rug pull is just insane enough to leave us wanting more.
00:03:46I did exactly what you asked.
00:03:49Did what, Anna?
00:03:56I finished what I started.
00:03:58Number 71. Asami's Attack. Audition.
00:04:01An iconic staple of Japanese horror, Audition is an unflinchingly brutal revenge tale that will have you reaching for a barf bag.
00:04:09Mostly at the end.
00:04:11Until then, the film plays its cards pretty close to its chest.
00:04:15So, when Asami finally realizes Shigeharu's been stringing her along, it's all the more shocking.
00:04:33Let's just say Asami really brings the pain.
00:04:36And the wire saw.
00:04:37As you can imagine, Audition's bloody climax is guaranteed to leave you breathless,
00:04:42partially because of Asami's change of heart,
00:04:45and partially because of how far the film goes before finally fading to black.
00:05:06Number 70. Say Cheese. Smile.
00:05:09Dying to a malevolent entity is bad enough.
00:05:12But dying to a malevolent entity that's smiling the whole way?
00:05:16That's so much worse.
00:05:17What happens when you do see it?
00:05:23It's smiling at me.
00:05:26But not a friendly smile.
00:05:28It's the worst smile I've ever seen in my life.
00:05:30And whenever I see it, I just get this god-awful feeling like something really terrible is gonna happen.
00:05:36In the last arc, we learn the murderous spirit feeds on trauma,
00:05:40meaning the only way to save yourself is to pass a hardship onto someone else.
00:05:45In a vacuum, it's a clever bit of world-building that establishes the spirit's inescapable wrath.
00:05:50But it also builds upon Smile's core themes about the trauma we all subconsciously share with one another.
00:05:55Because this thing needs trauma to spread.
00:05:58That's what gives it power.
00:06:00Trauma.
00:06:01The layers of meaning behind this revelation always leave us grinning ear to ear.
00:06:06For the right reasons.
00:06:07Number 69. The Same Family.
00:06:10The Last House on the Left.
00:06:12Even deplorable villains need a place to stay for the night.
00:06:15In this case, the house they stumble upon just so happens to be owned by the family of one of the girls they left for dead a few miles back.
00:06:22Do you know their car broke down right out front, John?
00:06:25Oh? Anything serious?
00:06:28Yeah, I'm afraid we blew a rod.
00:06:30Ironic, far-fetched, hammy, call it what you will.
00:06:33But when the Collingwood parents unknowingly welcome their daughter's killers into their home,
00:06:37it is impossible to stop your jaw from dropping.
00:06:40From there, the Last House on the Left plays out like a slow-motion car crash.
00:06:45We're always waiting for the inevitable collision.
00:06:47Even though we know it's not gonna be pretty.
00:06:50What's the trouble, Doc?
00:06:52Shut your filthy mouth.
00:06:54Now take it easy, Doc.
00:06:55Don't do anything I wouldn't do.
00:06:57Number 68.
00:06:58Yes, they're cultists.
00:07:00The Invitation.
00:07:01Sometimes, attending your ex-wife's dinner party can make you a bit paranoid.
00:07:06Welcome to our little reunion of sorts.
00:07:11You guys are all very special to Eden, which means you're very special to me.
00:07:16Other times, she really is a cultist trying to sacrifice you in a blood ritual.
00:07:21The Invitation is all about the latter.
00:07:23Although you wouldn't know it for the first hour.
00:07:26Even though Eden is acting far from normal,
00:07:28the film presents Will's suspicions as a serious case of jealousy and unresolved emotions.
00:07:33Turns out he should have listened to his gut and left way earlier.
00:07:37Let's go, Kira.
00:07:38We're leaving right now.
00:07:39No, we are leaving now.
00:07:41Seeing Eden's plan go into motion is downright terrifying.
00:07:45But knowing how much Will tried to convince everyone, it's a bit vindicating, too.
00:07:51Number 67.
00:07:52Not Just One.
00:07:53The Belko Experiment.
00:07:55After a 9-to-5 from hell, Mike stumbles out of the office battered, bruised, and bloody.
00:08:00Why?
00:08:02Why?
00:08:03Mr. Belko.
00:08:04Why?
00:08:04He is the sole survivor of a heinous experiment where all of his co-workers were tasked with
00:08:10killing each other.
00:08:12Seeing him finally step out into the fresh air is a euphoric sigh of relief.
00:08:16As you can probably guess, the Belko Experiment doesn't end on that happy note, though.
00:08:21Right as we're rejoicing at Mike's survival, we see glimpses of other operations around the globe.
00:08:27This was just one of many Belko experiments, and Phase 2 hasn't even started.
00:08:32It seems there really is no rest for the weary.
00:08:36Number 66.
00:08:37Mia Talks To Them.
00:08:39Talk to me.
00:08:39Using a mysterious disembodied hand, a group of teenagers begin speaking to the dead as
00:08:44a party trick.
00:08:45Predictably, things go very wrong, culminating with main character Mia hurled into oncoming traffic.
00:08:59In the very last scene of the film, we see Mia aimlessly stumbling through the dark,
00:09:04until she finally sees the light of a candle in the distance.
00:09:07She reaches out, and winds up on the other side of the hand she'd been holding onto the whole movie.
00:09:12I let you in.
00:09:14Cue the chills.
00:09:16Karma is not friendly, but it sure does make for a good closing twist.
00:09:20Number 65.
00:09:22Kaylee Was Right.
00:09:23Oculus.
00:09:24Who killed the dog, ruined the parents' marriage, and got Tim committed to a psych hospital?
00:09:29If you ask Kaylee, she thinks it's the antique mirror in her late father's office.
00:09:33The purpose of today's experiment is to prove that the object behind me, the lacer glass,
00:09:38is home to an observable, predictable, supernatural force.
00:09:41Tim, however, isn't convinced, and neither were we.
00:09:44For almost half of the movie, Oculus makes you believe Kaylee is just projecting her trauma,
00:09:49and there really is no otherworldly force in the mirror.
00:09:52Until, right when you least expect it, the glass finally makes its move.
00:09:56I don't remember doing that, do you?
00:10:00You don't.
00:10:01Is it spine-tingling?
00:10:02Absolutely.
00:10:03But we have to admit, Kaylee's I told you so moment makes it all worth it.
00:10:08Number 64.
00:10:10Damien Is Evil.
00:10:11The Omen.
00:10:12What parents would believe their own child is the son of Satan?
00:10:15It's a tough pill to swallow, but even so, the evidence is undeniable.
00:10:20Have no fear, little one.
00:10:25I am here to protect thee.
00:10:27Damien torments his parents, resists going to church,
00:10:30and offs anyone who questions his origins.
00:10:33The Omen is nothing unless it can convince you this five-year-old is actually the Antichrist.
00:10:38And we have to admit, it is pretty persuasive.
00:10:41It's especially notable since the twist doesn't come out in one definitive scene.
00:10:45Instead, Damien's truth is shown through little tidbits of evidence here and there,
00:10:50until it's impossible to ignore.
00:10:52This is not a human child.
00:10:56Make no mistake.
00:10:58If you're still on the fence, his fourth wall break at the end is basically a confession.
00:11:03Number 63.
00:11:05All work and no play.
00:11:06The Shining.
00:11:07After going mad inside the Overlook Hotel,
00:11:10Jack Torrance is seemingly left to freeze inside the property's snowy maze.
00:11:14Danny!
00:11:14But this is a horror movie.
00:11:21You didn't really think it'd end without one last scare, right?
00:11:24Although Wendy and Danny leave Jack to succumb to the elements,
00:11:27the final shot of The Shining shows him among a group of guests.
00:11:30The kicker, though?
00:11:32It's in a photo from the 20s,
00:11:33nearly 60 years before the events of the film.
00:11:36Jack's body may have perished that night,
00:11:45but clearly, his spirit lives on as part of the Overlook.
00:11:48Guess you could say he really is a dull boy now.
00:11:52Number 62.
00:11:53Science Officer Ash.
00:11:54Alien.
00:11:55In space, no one can hear you scream.
00:11:58The same is true of gasps.
00:12:01While Alien has you thoroughly distracted with the threat of the xenomorph,
00:12:04another jaw-dropper hits you by surprise.
00:12:07Ash?
00:12:10Any suggestions from you or mother?
00:12:14No, we're still collating.
00:12:18You what?
00:12:21You're still collating?
00:12:24I find that hard to believe.
00:12:25You know the science officer Ash?
00:12:27The one who's following orders to return the alien alive?
00:12:30Yeah, that's because Ash is an android with presumably no free will of his own.
00:12:34Jesus.
00:12:39It's a robot.
00:12:40Ash is a goddamn robot.
00:12:42In a film that embraces all the best sci-fi has to offer,
00:12:45we really should have seen this coming.
00:12:47But despite it all,
00:12:49we'd wager Ash's robotic head falling off left most people dumbfounded.
00:12:54Number 61.
00:12:55The Real Killer.
00:12:56I Know What You Did Last Summer.
00:12:58As a general rule of thumb,
00:12:59always make sure the men you leave for dead are actually,
00:13:02you know, dead.
00:13:03There's no way!
00:13:05Oh my god, this isn't happening.
00:13:07Or better yet,
00:13:07don't try to cover up a hit and run in the first place.
00:13:10Full of pulpy thrills and over-the-top death scenes,
00:13:13I Know What You Did Last Summer plays up the idea that the characters are being punished for their actions.
00:13:18And, well, they are.
00:13:20But not because they killed someone.
00:13:21Because they hit him,
00:13:23thought he was dead,
00:13:24and rolled him off a cliff.
00:13:25Kids like you should be out having fun.
00:13:28Drinking.
00:13:29Party.
00:13:30Running people over.
00:13:32Getting away with murder.
00:13:34Things like that.
00:13:35It's funny, though.
00:13:36One of the biggest twist endings in slasher film history is when a character is actually alive.
00:13:41Number 60.
00:13:42Lori is Michael's sister.
00:13:44Halloween 2.
00:13:45Michael Myers didn't need a grand motive in John Carpenter's 1978 classic.
00:13:50But Halloween 2 gave him one anyway.
00:13:53Apparently, Michael wasn't after Lori because she was a virgin or an easy target or anything like that.
00:13:58That's Strode girl.
00:13:59That's Michael Myers' sister.
00:14:01She was born two years before he was committed.
00:14:06She's actually Michael's long-lost sister.
00:14:08And he won't be satisfied until he finishes her off.
00:14:11By deepening the relationship between a horror icon and his final girl royalty,
00:14:16this bold twist completely reframed the entire Halloween franchise to that point.
00:14:22Michael!
00:14:25Not many sequels are willing to shake up the original to this degree.
00:14:29But that is also why this family reunion remains one of the slasher genre's most iconic moments.
00:14:35Number 59.
00:14:36Sarah's Trauma.
00:14:37Silent House.
00:14:38Better keep your eyes peeled during this one.
00:14:40The hints are everywhere.
00:14:42However, they're hard to find since Silent House is a rollercoaster of a story.
00:14:46Wait, what about the noise?
00:14:49Honey, it's an old house.
00:14:51They make noises.
00:14:53I'm sure it's nothing.
00:14:55But I'll keep looking around, okay?
00:14:57It's unclear whether there are intruders in the house, if it's some kind of haunting situation,
00:15:02or if Sarah's family is out to get her.
00:15:04The answer is none of the above.
00:15:07Sarah is hunting them.
00:15:09Following the horrific things her family did to her as a kid,
00:15:12Sarah is now getting revenge the only way she knows how.
00:15:15With an axe.
00:15:16The house is a twisted metaphor for her fractured psyche.
00:15:24And much like Sarah herself,
00:15:26the audience doesn't realize she's the villain until the very last moment.
00:15:30Number 58.
00:15:31The Killers Know They're In A Movie.
00:15:33Funny Games.
00:15:34Despite the name,
00:15:36this movie is no laughing matter.
00:15:38It follows two crooks who infiltrate a home
00:15:40and torment its residents for seemingly no other reason than the sick thrill of it.
00:15:44It is downright bone-chilling to watch,
00:15:54especially during Anna's escape attempt.
00:15:57She manages to remove her bindings,
00:15:58grab a weapon,
00:15:59and completely turn the tables on her captors.
00:16:02Peter and Pal, however,
00:16:03simply reach for the remote
00:16:04and rewind the movie.
00:16:06Literally.
00:16:07That's right.
00:16:08These guys know they're in a film
00:16:09and can control it to make the ending they want.
00:16:12It is terrifying,
00:16:18brilliant,
00:16:18and utterly mind-blowing all at once.
00:16:21Number 57.
00:16:22Built On A Graveyard.
00:16:24Poltergeist.
00:16:24We didn't think we had to say it,
00:16:26but Don't Speak Ill of the Dead
00:16:27also means don't build houses on abandoned gravesites.
00:16:33They're here.
00:16:35All movie long,
00:16:36the poor Freeling family is scared to the core
00:16:38by a never-ending onslaught of paranormal escapades.
00:16:41They learn their house was built on a former cemetery,
00:16:44but are assured the graves were moved.
00:16:46A big lie that was.
00:16:48Only the tombstones made the trip,
00:16:50meaning the Freelings were unwittingly stomping over unmarked graves the whole time.
00:16:54You left the bodies and you only moved the headstones!
00:16:57You only moved the headstones!
00:17:00Woo-hoo!
00:17:01Just the thought of it gives us the heebie-jeebies,
00:17:04and we're not alone.
00:17:05Poltergeist's haunting finale
00:17:07has left people double-checking their land plots for generations.
00:17:11Number 56.
00:17:12Angela is the new host,
00:17:14Wreck 2.
00:17:15Armed with nothing more than a camera
00:17:16and a hunch of a good story,
00:17:18reporter Angela Vidal
00:17:19finds herself trapped in an apartment building
00:17:21during a zombie outbreak.
00:17:23She fights,
00:17:32she fails,
00:17:33and the first film ends with her dragged into darkness.
00:17:36Later,
00:17:37Wreck 2 reveals Angela didn't die,
00:17:39although for the good of humanity,
00:17:41she probably should have.
00:17:43The demonic Patient Zero possessed her
00:17:45at the end of the original Wreck,
00:17:47meaning the true source of the virus
00:17:48is now masquerading as its sole survivor.
00:17:53A gut punch of a twist,
00:18:00it leaves you with the awful realization
00:18:02that this outbreak is far from over.
00:18:05Number 55.
00:18:06Not a victim.
00:18:07The autopsy of Jane Doe.
00:18:09As the father and son coroners
00:18:11peel back the layers of their latest autopsy,
00:18:14somewhat literally at times,
00:18:15the Tilden men realize
00:18:16this presumed victim
00:18:17may have been killed for a reason.
00:18:20Almost like a human sacrifice.
00:18:23That being,
00:18:26she is a vengeful witch
00:18:27with the power to devastate anyone in her path.
00:18:30As each new mystery piles up,
00:18:32the autopsy of Jane Doe
00:18:34masterfully builds up its corpse's character
00:18:36until there is no question
00:18:37about why she ended up on their table.
00:18:39Of course,
00:18:40the scariest fact of all
00:18:41doesn't come until later,
00:18:43when the Tildens realize
00:18:44that just because she's dead
00:18:45doesn't mean Jane can't still use her powers.
00:18:48They are a witch
00:18:50and their blood shall be on their own hands.
00:18:55Number 54.
00:18:56It's a sequel.
00:18:57Split.
00:18:58Since it comes from director M. Night Shyamalan,
00:19:00everyone who showed up for Split
00:19:02expected a bonkers plot twist.
00:19:04You are different from the rest.
00:19:09It really made you wait for it, though.
00:19:11Long after Casey escapes,
00:19:13the assailant is arrested,
00:19:14and even the credits roll,
00:19:16we finally get Shyamalan's trademark tease.
00:19:18And it's one for the ages.
00:19:20It all comes down to one exchange.
00:19:23Specifically, one name.
00:19:25Mr. Glass.
00:19:26A.K.A. a character
00:19:27from Shyamalan's 2000s film Unbreakable.
00:19:29It's like that crazy guy in a wheelchair
00:19:31that gave me away 15 years ago.
00:19:34And he gave him a funny name, too.
00:19:38What was it?
00:19:40Mr. Glass.
00:19:42Oh, yeah.
00:19:44Split was set in the same universe
00:19:46the entire time,
00:19:47and no one picked up on it.
00:19:49Mind officially blown.
00:19:51Shyamalan has a very spotty track record,
00:19:54but when he hits,
00:19:55he hits hard.
00:19:56Number 53.
00:19:57The Kids Aren't Alright.
00:19:59Sinister.
00:20:00All across the nation,
00:20:01kids are being captured by the boogeyman,
00:20:03and their families are left to die.
00:20:14As Ellison sees in some gnarly home videos,
00:20:17the deaths are not quick or painless.
00:20:20But somehow,
00:20:21it all becomes so much worse
00:20:22when the pieces come together at the end.
00:20:24The boogeyman may take a child,
00:20:26but he isn't the one killing the others.
00:20:28No, that honor stays in the family
00:20:30if you catch our drift.
00:20:33Yes, it's awful,
00:20:39and yes, it's just as bad as it sounds.
00:20:41It's even worse
00:20:42because the clues were there all along.
00:20:45We just really, really did not want to believe it.
00:20:48Number 52.
00:20:49Ben's Death.
00:20:50Night of the Living Dead.
00:20:52This one just hurts.
00:20:53In a night from hell
00:20:54where both dead and tensions are rising,
00:20:57Ben remains calm,
00:20:58cool,
00:20:59and collected to the very end.
00:21:01She's right.
00:21:02You have to go downstairs now,
00:21:03just for a little while,
00:21:04until we get back.
00:21:06Then we can all leave.
00:21:07There's a reason he's the only one of the group
00:21:10to live through the night.
00:21:11But despite all that,
00:21:12when he emerges the next morning,
00:21:14it's to face the barrel of a firearm.
00:21:16Ben is mistaken as one of the living dead
00:21:19and treated like it too.
00:21:20He did everything right,
00:21:22and in the end,
00:21:23his killers don't even seem to care.
00:21:25Good shot.
00:21:26Okay, he's dead.
00:21:27Let's go get him.
00:21:28That's another one for the fire.
00:21:29In such an out-of-this-world film,
00:21:32ending with a dose of stark,
00:21:34sobering reality
00:21:35makes Night of the Living Dead
00:21:36impossible to forget.
00:21:38Number 51.
00:21:39Angela isn't actually Angela.
00:21:42Sleepaway Camp.
00:21:43Featuring a cast of promiscuous camp counselors
00:21:45as they meet their maker,
00:21:47it's easy to dismiss Sleepaway Camp
00:21:49as another forgettable slasher ripoff.
00:21:51Listen, Angela.
00:21:52If you're not going to participate
00:21:54in our activities,
00:21:55then you just sit there
00:21:56and you do nothing.
00:21:57That does not include
00:21:59talking with the boys.
00:22:00You're not a goddamn prima donna,
00:22:02you know?
00:22:03Understand?
00:22:03But if you make it to the end,
00:22:05you're rewarded
00:22:06with one hell of a reveal.
00:22:08The killer is Angela,
00:22:09a young girl
00:22:10who was sent to camp
00:22:11after the traumatic death
00:22:12of her brother.
00:22:13Only she's not actually Angela.
00:22:15It was the sister
00:22:16who died in the accident,
00:22:17but the surviving Peter
00:22:18was forced to be the girl
00:22:20his aunt always wanted.
00:22:21All the sexual escapades
00:22:23at camp left him bloodthirsty,
00:22:24eventually leaving Sleepaway Camp
00:22:26with one of the most disturbing
00:22:28freeze-frame endings
00:22:29in cinema history.
00:22:30This surreal indie film
00:22:43from the early 60s
00:22:44sees a young woman named Mary
00:22:46surviving a deadly car accident,
00:22:47only to be preyed upon
00:22:49by a gray-faced ghoul.
00:22:54As several other ghoulish figures
00:22:56start cropping up,
00:22:57she is relentlessly pursued
00:22:58through a nightmarish world
00:22:59that seems to defy logic
00:23:01more and more.
00:23:02There's a reason.
00:23:03In the epilogue,
00:23:04it's revealed that Mary
00:23:05actually didn't survive
00:23:06that car accident at the start.
00:23:08The ghouls were presumably there
00:23:09to take her to the afterlife.
00:23:11The car's still over there,
00:23:13and then the footprints
00:23:14leading up to here.
00:23:20Critic Roger Ebert
00:23:21likened its shocking
00:23:22but inevitable ending
00:23:23to a lost Twilight Zone episode.
00:23:25Number 49.
00:23:26Who's the dummy now?
00:23:28Dead Silence.
00:23:29As they did in Saw,
00:23:30filmmakers James Wan
00:23:32and Lee Whannell
00:23:32came up with yet another
00:23:33layered and twisted ending.
00:23:35Dead Silence sees the ghost
00:23:36of a vicious ventriloquist
00:23:38named Mary Shaw
00:23:39enacting her revenge
00:23:40on the bloodline
00:23:41of a boy who humiliated her.
00:23:43One of her targets,
00:23:44Jamie,
00:23:44discovers that Mary
00:23:45was there the whole time.
00:23:47In fact,
00:23:47she was disguised
00:23:48as his new stepmother,
00:23:50puppeteering his father's corpse
00:23:51like a puppet
00:23:52in every scene he was in.
00:23:54Soup.
00:23:55Delicious, too.
00:23:56I'll vouch for that.
00:23:58This realization
00:23:58is delivered
00:23:59with a hypnotic montage
00:24:00replaying scenes
00:24:01we've already watched,
00:24:02this time from Mary's perspective.
00:24:05Ventriloquism
00:24:05was never so creepy.
00:24:07And that's saying something
00:24:08because it's already
00:24:09pretty creepy.
00:24:10She had no children,
00:24:12only dolls.
00:24:14And if you see her
00:24:15in your dreams,
00:24:16be sure you never,
00:24:18ever,
00:24:19scream.
00:24:21Number 48.
00:24:23Simone was trapped
00:24:23in the walls,
00:24:24the orphanage.
00:24:25In this twisted
00:24:26and captivating
00:24:27supernatural horror movie
00:24:28from J.A. Bayona,
00:24:30Laura moves her family
00:24:31into the orphanage
00:24:32where she grew up,
00:24:33intent on turning it
00:24:34into a school.
00:24:35After her son Simone
00:24:36goes missing one day,
00:24:37she begins uncovering
00:24:38the orphanage's
00:24:39deadly secrets.
00:24:40Simone, hijo.
00:24:41But it would be
00:24:49more of a twist
00:24:50if the place
00:24:50wasn't haunted
00:24:51by the spirits
00:24:52of dead people.
00:24:52The real twist
00:24:54is that Simone's end
00:24:55was not supernatural.
00:24:56He had become trapped
00:24:57in the old house's walls
00:24:58and was never heard
00:24:59from again.
00:25:00Laura's reaction
00:25:01and tragic ending
00:25:02made the orphanage
00:25:03one for the ages.
00:25:04Number 47.
00:25:10The killer is in your bed
00:25:12when a stranger calls.
00:25:13Carol Kane stars
00:25:14in this horror thriller
00:25:15as Jill,
00:25:16a babysitter
00:25:17who is terrorized
00:25:18by a killer
00:25:18calling from an extension.
00:25:20But the calls
00:25:21are coming
00:25:21from inside the house
00:25:22is only the first act twist.
00:25:24Years later
00:25:37when she's married
00:25:37with her own children,
00:25:39Jill is targeted
00:25:39by the mad killer
00:25:40Kurt Duncan once again.
00:25:42After the police leave
00:25:43and she's alone in bed
00:25:44with her sleeping husband,
00:25:45she's sure the killer
00:25:46is in the closet.
00:25:47But surprise!
00:25:48He's actually in bed
00:25:49next to her.
00:25:51Stephen.
00:25:53Stephen.
00:25:54It's a clever inversion
00:25:58of that first twist,
00:26:00but the intimacy of it
00:26:01feels even more frightening.
00:26:03Number 46.
00:26:04Johnny is Harry.
00:26:05Angel Heart.
00:26:06In this stylish
00:26:07neo-noir horror film,
00:26:08Harry Angel
00:26:09is a private eye
00:26:10hired by a mysterious man
00:26:11to track down
00:26:12a missing singer
00:26:13known as Johnny Favorite.
00:26:14Cypher tells Angel
00:26:15the singer welched
00:26:16on an unspecified contract.
00:26:18The case leads
00:26:19the detective
00:26:19down a twisting,
00:26:20turning path
00:26:21that leaves a trail
00:26:22of bodies behind.
00:26:23In the end,
00:26:24Angel realizes
00:26:25that the man
00:26:25he's looking for
00:26:26is himself.
00:26:28Mark, I didn't kill
00:26:29no one.
00:26:30I'm afraid you did,
00:26:32Johnny.
00:26:32My name's not Johnny.
00:26:34All killed by your own hand.
00:26:36Guided by me, naturally.
00:26:38He is Johnny Favorite,
00:26:39a man who murdered
00:26:40and tried to consume
00:26:41another man's soul,
00:26:43condemning his own soul
00:26:44to hell.
00:26:45And if that weren't enough,
00:26:47Louis Cypher
00:26:48turns out to be
00:26:48Lucifer himself.
00:26:50Louis Cypher?
00:26:51Lucifer.
00:26:54Lucifer.
00:26:55Number 45.
00:26:57Sarah's escape
00:26:57was a hallucination.
00:26:59The Descent.
00:27:00A group of women
00:27:00finds out
00:27:01there's something scarier
00:27:02to exploring caves
00:27:03than tight spaces.
00:27:04One by one,
00:27:05they are devoured
00:27:06by humanoid monsters
00:27:07known as crawlers.
00:27:08Where are we?
00:27:11It hasn't got a name.
00:27:12It's a new system.
00:27:14I wanted us all
00:27:15to discover it.
00:27:17No one's ever
00:27:18been down here before.
00:27:20Sarah is the last
00:27:21remaining member
00:27:22of her group
00:27:22at the end of the movie.
00:27:23We watch as she makes
00:27:25the desperate
00:27:25and terrifying climb
00:27:26to safety,
00:27:27only to be wrenched
00:27:28back into her nightmare.
00:27:29Her escape
00:27:30was only a dream.
00:27:32She hallucinates
00:27:33a chilling image
00:27:33as we leave her underground,
00:27:35doomed to be finished off
00:27:36by the carnivorous
00:27:37cave dwellers.
00:27:38The movie was already
00:27:39bleak to begin with,
00:27:40but the way it ups
00:27:41the ante in its last minutes
00:27:42made it legendary.
00:27:49Number 44.
00:27:51They could have been friends.
00:27:52Whatever happened
00:27:53to Baby Jane?
00:27:54Not a traditional
00:27:55horror movie.
00:27:56This unforgettable film
00:27:57features classic movie stars
00:27:58Bette Davis and Joan Crawford
00:28:00as two fading
00:28:00Hollywood actresses.
00:28:02Their careers ended
00:28:03ostensibly as a result
00:28:04of a car accident
00:28:05caused by Jane
00:28:05and her alcohol use,
00:28:06after which she needed
00:28:08to care for her sister Blanche
00:28:09who was left with paralysis.
00:28:11But in the last act,
00:28:12Jane has lost her grip
00:28:14and drags a starving
00:28:15and neglected Blanche
00:28:16to the beach.
00:28:17It's here that Blanche
00:28:18reveals the big twist.
00:28:19You didn't do it, Jane.
00:28:24I did it myself.
00:28:29Don't you understand?
00:28:31She was responsible
00:28:33for the accident
00:28:34that broke her own spine
00:28:35and only let Jane
00:28:36believe it was her fault.
00:28:38Jane has lost her grip
00:28:39on reality so much
00:28:40she's not even angry.
00:28:42She makes the heartbreaking
00:28:43realization only too late
00:28:44that their years
00:28:45of mutual resentment
00:28:46were a waste.
00:28:47And you mean
00:28:48all this time
00:28:53we could have been friends.
00:28:56Number 43.
00:28:57Maggie is Freddy's daughter.
00:28:59Freddy's dead.
00:29:00The final nightmare.
00:29:01The Nightmare on Elm Street
00:29:02sequels were largely
00:29:03an example
00:29:03of diminishing returns.
00:29:05While the sixth movie
00:29:06was seen as one of the worst
00:29:07in the franchise,
00:29:08it did have a pretty killer twist
00:29:10on Freddy Krueger's backstory.
00:29:11Maggie Burroughs,
00:29:12the psychiatrist
00:29:13trying to help
00:29:14Freddy's new targets,
00:29:15learns that she
00:29:16is Krueger's daughter.
00:29:17You're my blood.
00:29:20Only you could have
00:29:21brought me out.
00:29:22And you're mine.
00:29:24But you can't be my father.
00:29:26After watching him
00:29:27slice and dice
00:29:28the teens of Springwood, Ohio
00:29:30for almost a decade,
00:29:31it was kind of refreshing
00:29:32to see more of what
00:29:33makes the dream killer tick.
00:29:34While it did add
00:29:35some shading
00:29:36to the dream killer's motivation,
00:29:38it couldn't save the movie
00:29:39from some pretty
00:29:40terrible 3D effects.
00:29:41Happy Father's Day.
00:29:43Come on, John!
00:29:44Number 42.
00:29:46Gabriel's Identity.
00:29:47Malignant.
00:29:48If you want unhinged horror
00:29:50and bonkers twists,
00:29:51look no further
00:29:52than this James Wan thriller.
00:29:54Malignant is the story
00:29:55of Madison Mitchell,
00:29:56a woman who fears
00:29:57a serial killer
00:29:58who killed her abusive husband
00:29:59might just be Gabriel,
00:30:01her childhood imaginary friend
00:30:02come to life.
00:30:03You're in a hospital.
00:30:04Where's Derek?
00:30:06Do you remember what happened?
00:30:08Someone broke into your house.
00:30:09You were attacked
00:30:12and Derek.
00:30:15But the truth
00:30:16is even stranger than that.
00:30:17He actually turns out
00:30:18to be her parasitic twin,
00:30:20a monstrous twin brother
00:30:21who was removed
00:30:22from her skull as a child.
00:30:23His brain still lives
00:30:25in Madison's cranium
00:30:26and takes over her body
00:30:27to commit his murders.
00:30:28One twin is dominant
00:30:29while the other
00:30:30is underdeveloped.
00:30:32It's not considered
00:30:32conjoined
00:30:33because the underdeveloped twin
00:30:34is dependent
00:30:35on the body of the other.
00:30:36Like a parasite
00:30:37Gabriel feeds off Emily.
00:30:40Yes, that's two big twists
00:30:42and maybe it's a hat
00:30:43on a hat,
00:30:44but when you've got
00:30:44a parasitic twin
00:30:45living in your brain,
00:30:46you probably need two hats.
00:30:48Number 41.
00:30:49Not his daughter.
00:30:50Don't look now.
00:30:51John and Laura
00:30:52are a married couple
00:30:53traveling to Venice
00:30:54after the death
00:30:54of their daughter
00:30:55who drowned in a creek
00:30:56while wearing
00:30:57a vivid red raincoat.
00:30:58Amid psychic visions,
00:31:00grief,
00:31:00and spooky happenings,
00:31:01John becomes obsessed
00:31:02with a figure
00:31:03he thinks is his daughter
00:31:04running through the streets
00:31:05of the flooded city.
00:31:07Coincidentally,
00:31:07and as it turns out ironically,
00:31:09a mysterious serial killer
00:31:10is also stalking the streets.
00:31:12At the climax of the movie,
00:31:14having cornered the girl,
00:31:15he realizes too late
00:31:16that it's not his daughter
00:31:17but the serial killer
00:31:18who quickly dispatches him.
00:31:20I'm a friend.
00:31:24I won't hurt you.
00:31:25Come on.
00:31:29It is a cruel
00:31:30and creepy ending
00:31:31that feels especially tragic.
00:31:33Number 40.
00:31:34Lady Van Tassel
00:31:35controls the horseman,
00:31:36Sleepy Hollow.
00:31:37We all probably heard
00:31:39the legend of Sleepy Hollow
00:31:40as kids,
00:31:41but that did not stop us
00:31:42from being shocked
00:31:43by the plot twist
00:31:43in Tim Burton's
00:31:441999 adaptation
00:31:45of the short story.
00:31:47In the film,
00:31:48Ichabod Crane
00:31:48is sent to the small town
00:31:50of Sleepy Hollow
00:31:50to investigate
00:31:51a series of murders.
00:31:53Halfway through the movie,
00:31:54Lady Van Tassel
00:31:55the stepmother
00:31:56of Ichabod's love interest
00:31:57is decapitated
00:31:58by the Headless Horseman.
00:31:59Or is she?
00:32:01Dear stepdaughter,
00:32:03you look as if
00:32:05you'd seen a ghost.
00:32:06Lady Van Tassel
00:32:07faked her own death
00:32:08and is the reason
00:32:09this whole beheading business
00:32:10started in the first place.
00:32:12Her revenge plot
00:32:13necessitated a bit of murder
00:32:14and she made a deal
00:32:15with Satan
00:32:16to get her way.
00:32:17The horseman comes!
00:32:19And tonight,
00:32:20he comes for you!
00:32:21Number 39.
00:32:22Inside Job.
00:32:23You're next.
00:32:24We don't need a motive
00:32:25for why crazed killers
00:32:26do what they do.
00:32:27So when massed assailants
00:32:28storm the Davison household
00:32:30and start knocking off
00:32:31family members,
00:32:32we hardly bat an eyelash.
00:32:33But it's eventually revealed
00:32:35that the intruders
00:32:36aren't just bloodthirsty.
00:32:37They're being paid.
00:32:38And by some of the family,
00:32:40no less.
00:32:40Really?
00:32:42You had to do that
00:32:43right in front of me?
00:32:47Were you saying something?
00:32:48At first,
00:32:49it seems like
00:32:49the edgy Felix
00:32:50and his girlfriend Z
00:32:51hired the men
00:32:52to take out
00:32:52the former's family
00:32:53for the inheritance.
00:32:54And they totally did.
00:32:56But it's later revealed
00:32:57that the demure Crispin
00:32:59isn't on it too.
00:33:00I can't believe
00:33:00you were in on this.
00:33:05Come on, babe.
00:33:06You do know
00:33:07how broke we are, right?
00:33:08Our lead protagonist
00:33:09Erin initially has trouble
00:33:11accepting her boyfriend's
00:33:12shady dealings.
00:33:13But considering
00:33:14what she went through,
00:33:15we don't blame her
00:33:15for breaking things off
00:33:17in the bloodiest way possible.
00:33:19Number 38.
00:33:20You're in a cult.
00:33:21Kill List.
00:33:22If you missed
00:33:22one of the strangest
00:33:23and most upsetting
00:33:24horror movies
00:33:25of the last 20 years,
00:33:26don't worry.
00:33:26You're not alone.
00:33:28Kill List didn't even
00:33:29make back its $800,000
00:33:30at the box office.
00:33:31But the folks who did see it
00:33:33experienced a wild ride.
00:33:35The movie follows
00:33:36Gal and Jay,
00:33:37two British military guys
00:33:38turned hitmen
00:33:39who take on a contract
00:33:40that ends up
00:33:41proving disastrous.
00:33:41So I'm right.
00:33:53Kill List doesn't have
00:33:55just one big twist
00:33:56at the end.
00:33:57It's more of a slow burn
00:33:58with multiple twists
00:33:59along the way
00:34:00and a plethora
00:34:01of gory,
00:34:02disgusting horror
00:34:03to boot.
00:34:03The violence will leave
00:34:13even the most
00:34:14strong-stomached reeling.
00:34:16In the end,
00:34:17will leave you gobsmacked.
00:34:19Number 37.
00:34:20Lori is also a killer.
00:34:22Happy Death Day.
00:34:23Groundhog Day,
00:34:24but make it horror.
00:34:25Happy Death Day
00:34:26is a fun,
00:34:27twisty romp
00:34:28of a horror movie.
00:34:29It centers around
00:34:30a girl named Tree
00:34:31who is stuck
00:34:31in a time loop
00:34:32where she is murdered
00:34:33by a masked stranger
00:34:34before waking up
00:34:35back at the start
00:34:36of the day.
00:34:37She eventually begins
00:34:38using her situation
00:34:39to identify her killer.
00:34:41So I'm just supposed
00:34:42to keep dying
00:34:44until I figure out
00:34:45who my killer is?
00:34:46She eventually does,
00:34:48believing him
00:34:48to be a serial killer
00:34:49on the loose.
00:34:50After she kills
00:34:51her would-be killer,
00:34:52she celebrates
00:34:53with a cupcake
00:34:53from her roommate Lori
00:34:55and goes to bed,
00:34:56only to wake up
00:34:57still in the loop.
00:34:58The cupcake was poisoned
00:34:59and Lori was trying
00:35:01to off her the entire time.
00:35:03Talk about a bad roommate.
00:35:04You killed me.
00:35:08What?
00:35:11You poisoned it.
00:35:12Number 36.
00:35:13The Man in the Walls.
00:35:15The Boy.
00:35:16Little children
00:35:17in horror movies
00:35:18are scary enough,
00:35:19but little doll children?
00:35:21Yeah,
00:35:21count us out.
00:35:22In 2016's The Boy,
00:35:24Greta travels
00:35:25to the United Kingdom
00:35:25to be a nanny
00:35:26to an elderly couple
00:35:27and their 8-year-old son Brahms.
00:35:29Turns out, however,
00:35:30Brahms is not
00:35:31a human child at all,
00:35:33but a porcelain doll
00:35:34the couple treats
00:35:35as though he were alive.
00:35:37As strange events
00:35:38begin to happen
00:35:38around the house,
00:35:40Greta starts to believe
00:35:40the doll does have
00:35:42a human spirit.
00:35:43Please come out.
00:35:46Come play,
00:35:47pretty, brother.
00:35:48But when someone
00:35:48smashes the doll,
00:35:50the truth comes out.
00:35:51The real Brahms,
00:35:52who died in a fire
00:35:53decades ago,
00:35:54had been living
00:35:55in the walls of the house
00:35:56controlling the actions
00:35:57of the doll
00:35:58the whole time.
00:36:05Number 35.
00:36:07Josh is Possessed.
00:36:09Insidious.
00:36:09The things that happen
00:36:10to us as children
00:36:11really do follow us
00:36:12to adulthood,
00:36:13don't they?
00:36:14Insidious explores
00:36:15that theme
00:36:15of lingering childhood trauma
00:36:17and takes it
00:36:17to its natural,
00:36:18twisty conclusion.
00:36:19When they discover
00:36:20that their son Dalton
00:36:21can astral project
00:36:22and is being
00:36:23possessed by demons,
00:36:24parents Josh and Renee
00:36:25learn something terrifying
00:36:27about Josh's own past.
00:36:28The reason
00:36:29I knew to call Elise
00:36:31in this situation,
00:36:33the reason I
00:36:33know her so well,
00:36:36is because I called her
00:36:37myself once
00:36:38years ago
00:36:39to help you.
00:36:44What are you talking about, Mom?
00:36:45He has the same ability
00:36:47as Dalton,
00:36:48and when he was a child,
00:36:49he was tormented
00:36:50by the ghost
00:36:50of a terrifying old woman.
00:36:52Josh has to face
00:36:53the old woman again
00:36:54to save Dalton,
00:36:55and once he does,
00:36:56it seems like
00:36:57everything's fine.
00:36:58But at the last moment,
00:36:59we learn that
00:37:00Josh didn't win.
00:37:01Possessed by the old lady,
00:37:03his reign of terror begins.
00:37:05Why did you do that?
00:37:08Why would you do that to me
00:37:09when you know
00:37:10how I feel about that?
00:37:11Why?
00:37:12Number 34.
00:37:13Howard was right.
00:37:1410, Cloverfield Lane.
00:37:16What would you do
00:37:17if you woke up
00:37:18chained in a room
00:37:18with some guy
00:37:19you've never met
00:37:20telling you
00:37:20that you can't leave
00:37:21because of the
00:37:22poisonous air outside?
00:37:23Would you believe that guy?
00:37:25I'm not sure yet
00:37:26if it's chemical
00:37:26or nuclear,
00:37:28but down here,
00:37:29we're safe.
00:37:32So where are we exactly?
00:37:33That is the central question
00:37:35that 10, Cloverfield Lane
00:37:36puts forth.
00:37:37After a car accident,
00:37:39Michelle wakes up
00:37:39to find herself
00:37:40in an underground bunker
00:37:41with only her captor
00:37:42and his assistant
00:37:43for company.
00:37:44Her captor, Howard,
00:37:45insists that a world-changing
00:37:47event is underway
00:37:47and she cannot
00:37:48leave the bunker.
00:37:50Michelle doesn't trust him,
00:37:51and as an audience member,
00:37:52it's doubtful
00:37:53whether we should either.
00:37:55Michelle eventually escapes
00:37:56and comes to learn
00:37:57that Howard was
00:37:58100% right.
00:38:00Also, aliens exist.
00:38:01Number 33.
00:38:14It was the devil
00:38:15all along.
00:38:16Fallen.
00:38:16If I go back
00:38:17to the beginning,
00:38:18that'll take forever.
00:38:19So let's start
00:38:20more recently.
00:38:21Fallen begins
00:38:22with Detective John Hobbes
00:38:24telling us about the time
00:38:24he almost died.
00:38:26Or so we think.
00:38:26This Denzel Washington
00:38:28supernatural horror film
00:38:29takes themes of possession
00:38:30to the world of police work.
00:38:32The voiceover
00:38:33at the beginning of the film
00:38:34is said in Washington's voice.
00:38:36So as we watch Hobbes
00:38:37investigate a series
00:38:38of occult killings,
00:38:39we think he is the narrator.
00:38:41The killer is revealed
00:38:42to be a demon named Azazel
00:38:44who can possess
00:38:45most human bodies.
00:38:47In the end,
00:38:47we think Hobbes
00:38:48has overcome Azazel,
00:38:50concluding the story
00:38:51of how he almost died.
00:38:52But no,
00:38:53the voice that's been speaking
00:38:54has actually been Azazel
00:38:56the entire time.
00:38:57The demon didn't die,
00:38:59taking over a nearby cat.
00:39:01Oh.
00:39:03You forgot something,
00:39:04didn't you?
00:39:07At the beginning,
00:39:08I said I was going
00:39:09to tell you
00:39:10about the time
00:39:11I almost died.
00:39:20See you around.
00:39:21Number 32.
00:39:23No happy endings.
00:39:24Drag me to hell.
00:39:26You can't always
00:39:27get what you want.
00:39:28Sometimes,
00:39:29what you get
00:39:29is a giant hand
00:39:30dragging you
00:39:31straight to hell.
00:39:33In Sam Raimi's
00:39:332009 comedy horror
00:39:35masterpiece,
00:39:36happy endings
00:39:36are not in the cards.
00:39:38But that doesn't
00:39:38stop you from hoping
00:39:39that maybe,
00:39:40just maybe,
00:39:41our protagonist
00:39:42will get away
00:39:42from the cursed button
00:39:43that haunts her.
00:39:44Christine's curse
00:39:51involves a three-day
00:39:52torment
00:39:52before a demon
00:39:53drags her down
00:39:54to the fiery pits below.
00:39:56But at the end
00:39:57of the film,
00:39:57you do really believe
00:39:58that she's figured out
00:39:59how to beat it.
00:40:00It's only when
00:40:01her boyfriend
00:40:02attempts to propose to her
00:40:03and gives her back
00:40:04her cursed button
00:40:04in the process
00:40:05that we realize
00:40:06she's actually lost.
00:40:08Oh my God!
00:40:09Hey, hey, hey!
00:40:11Hey, hey, hey!
00:40:13Stop!
00:40:13Oh God!
00:40:16Number 31.
00:40:17Sequel Prequel
00:40:18Final Destination 5.
00:40:20Final Destination 5
00:40:21mainly follows
00:40:22the characters
00:40:23of Sam and Molly
00:40:24as they try to outrun
00:40:25the inevitability
00:40:26of death.
00:40:27The plot takes them
00:40:28through bridge collapses,
00:40:29meat spits,
00:40:30and more
00:40:30before they believe
00:40:31they've finally survived.
00:40:32It's gone.
00:40:34You killed him.
00:40:35So does that mean
00:40:37I get blocks of life?
00:40:43Yeah.
00:40:45Yes, I do.
00:40:46At the end of the film,
00:40:47they end up on a plane.
00:40:49Volley Airlines Flight 180
00:40:51to be exact.
00:40:52On board,
00:40:53Sam overhears
00:40:54a flight attendant
00:40:54telling someone
00:40:55that a passenger
00:40:56who was removed
00:40:56from the flight
00:40:57said they had a premonition
00:40:58that the plane would explode.
00:40:59This is, of course, Alex,
00:41:01the main character
00:41:02from the first
00:41:03Final Destination movie.
00:41:04A surprise prequel
00:41:05is the best kind
00:41:07of prequel.
00:41:07I got you!
00:41:12Billy, hold on!
00:41:13Number 30.
00:41:14The Alien Makes It to Earth
00:41:16Life
00:41:16When Life came out
00:41:17in 2017,
00:41:19it didn't necessarily
00:41:19receive rave reviews
00:41:21from critics
00:41:21or audiences.
00:41:22But this sci-fi
00:41:23light horror film
00:41:24deserves a second look,
00:41:26in particular
00:41:26for the way
00:41:27it handles
00:41:27its last act.
00:41:29Toward the end
00:41:29of the film,
00:41:30only two members
00:41:31of a crew
00:41:32sent to investigate
00:41:32life on Mars
00:41:33are left.
00:41:34David and Miranda
00:41:35are fighting
00:41:35against a dangerous
00:41:36alien life form.
00:41:38They decide
00:41:38David will kill
00:41:39the alien in space
00:41:40and Miranda
00:41:41will return to Earth.
00:41:42This is Dr. Miranda
00:41:43North's black box
00:41:44recording in case
00:41:45of death upon re-entry.
00:41:47The creature
00:41:48killed four
00:41:48of the six ISS astronauts
00:41:50with a fifth
00:41:51Dr. David Jordan,
00:41:53presumed dead,
00:41:53carrying it out
00:41:54into deep space.
00:41:55A pod crashes
00:41:56on Earth.
00:41:57It turns out
00:41:58to be David
00:41:58and the alien
00:41:59instead of Miranda.
00:42:01The last thing
00:42:01we're left with
00:42:02is David pleading
00:42:03with the people
00:42:04who find him
00:42:04not to open the door
00:42:05and unleash
00:42:06the alien's havoc.
00:42:12Number 29.
00:42:13Lucas is dead.
00:42:14Good Night, Mommy.
00:42:15A clever movie twist
00:42:17is one that fools you
00:42:18in the moment,
00:42:19but opens up
00:42:20the world of the movie
00:42:21once you understand
00:42:21what's been going on.
00:42:23And Good Night, Mommy
00:42:24has one of the cleverest,
00:42:25saddest twists
00:42:26of the last 20 years.
00:42:27It's a Lucas-flop.
00:42:28The movie centers
00:42:43around twins
00:42:44Elias and Lucas
00:42:45who become convinced
00:42:46their mother
00:42:46is not their mother
00:42:47after she returns
00:42:48from surgery
00:42:49wrapped in bandages.
00:42:50Strange events
00:42:51lead them
00:42:52to trap the mother
00:42:52in the house
00:42:53and threaten
00:42:53to burn it down.
00:42:55The mother
00:42:55then reveals
00:42:56to Elias
00:42:56that Lucas died
00:42:57in an accident
00:42:58before the film's beginning
00:42:59and Elias
00:43:00has been hallucinating
00:43:01him the entire time.
00:43:09The reveal changes
00:43:11every idea
00:43:12you have
00:43:12about each character
00:43:13and makes you
00:43:14reconsider everything.
00:43:16Number 28.
00:43:17The narrator
00:43:18is the real madman,
00:43:19The Cabinet
00:43:20of Dr. Caligari.
00:43:21If you're gonna dip
00:43:22into the world
00:43:23of silent cinema,
00:43:24The Cabinet
00:43:24of Dr. Caligari
00:43:25is a wonderfully
00:43:26twisted place to start.
00:43:28The movie functions
00:43:29as a long flashback
00:43:30as a man named Francis
00:43:31tells the story
00:43:32of a hypnotist
00:43:33named Dr. Caligari
00:43:34who manipulates
00:43:35a man with a sleep disorder
00:43:36into committing murders.
00:43:38The story ends
00:43:39with Dr. Caligari
00:43:39in a mental health hospital
00:43:41but that's not
00:43:41the real ending.
00:43:43After the story,
00:43:44we learn that Francis,
00:43:45our very own narrator,
00:43:47is actually
00:43:47the true madman.
00:43:49Dr. Caligari
00:43:50is the hospital director
00:43:51and Francis
00:43:52is the patient
00:43:53actually living
00:43:53in the fictional
00:43:54Caligari's cell.
00:43:55Number 27.
00:44:05The husband
00:44:05isn't really dead,
00:44:07Les Diaboliques.
00:44:08Obviously,
00:44:09Psycho is one
00:44:10of the most important
00:44:11horror films
00:44:11of the last century.
00:44:13But what about
00:44:13the film
00:44:14that helped inspire Psycho?
00:44:16At first,
00:44:16the 1955 French film
00:44:18Les Diaboliques
00:44:19seems to be
00:44:19about two women,
00:44:20a wife and a mistress,
00:44:22who band together
00:44:22to kill the man
00:44:23who causes them
00:44:24both so much pain.
00:44:25But the crime
00:44:43at the center
00:44:43of Les Diaboliques
00:44:44turns out to be
00:44:45much more sinister.
00:44:47The husband,
00:44:47who we believe
00:44:48to be dead
00:44:49fairly early on
00:44:50in the film,
00:44:50actually never dies
00:44:51at all.
00:44:52The truth is
00:44:53that he and
00:44:53the mistress
00:44:54have concocted
00:44:55a twisted plan
00:44:56to torment
00:44:56the fragile wife
00:44:57to death.
00:44:58Diabolical indeed.
00:44:59When it comes
00:45:10to twists
00:45:11that blew our minds,
00:45:12Barbarian is
00:45:13near the top
00:45:14of the list.
00:45:15Zach Kreger's
00:45:15wild ride of a film
00:45:17starts out
00:45:17like a regular
00:45:18horror movie
00:45:18but quickly
00:45:19changes gear.
00:45:20When Tess arrives
00:45:21at her Airbnb
00:45:22to find it
00:45:23booked by a man
00:45:23named Keith,
00:45:24we think we see
00:45:25where things are going.
00:45:26But despite
00:45:27everything we know
00:45:28about horror movie tropes,
00:45:29Keith isn't actually
00:45:30the villain here.
00:45:31The twist comes
00:45:32when Tess follows
00:45:33Keith down
00:45:34into the bowels
00:45:34of the home's basement.
00:45:35Why did you come
00:45:36down here?
00:45:37Someone else is down here.
00:45:38Why?
00:45:39Why did you come
00:45:39down here?
00:45:40She finds Keith
00:45:41but she also finds
00:45:42a naked,
00:45:43terrifying looking woman
00:45:44simply known
00:45:45as Mother.
00:45:46The film immediately
00:45:48smash cuts
00:45:48to Justin Long
00:45:49of all people,
00:45:50leaving us to wonder
00:45:51what just happened.
00:45:53Number 25.
00:45:54Su Yan was a ghost
00:45:55the whole time.
00:45:56A tale of two sisters.
00:45:57The secret ghost
00:45:59is a well-worn
00:46:00horror trope
00:46:01from the others
00:46:01to the sixth sense.
00:46:03But it takes
00:46:03a smart movie
00:46:04to do the trope well.
00:46:06A tale of two sisters
00:46:07is one of the better
00:46:08films to do it.
00:46:09At the beginning
00:46:09of the film,
00:46:10Su Mi leaves
00:46:11a mental health hospital
00:46:12and heads home
00:46:13to her father,
00:46:14stepmother,
00:46:14and sister Su Yan.
00:46:16The family's dynamics
00:46:17are complex
00:46:18and often terrifying,
00:46:19but not as terrifying
00:46:20as the reveal
00:46:21that comes
00:46:22towards the film's end.
00:46:23Su Mi learns
00:46:33that she has
00:46:34dissociative identity disorder
00:46:36and that her sister
00:46:37Su Yan
00:46:37is a figment
00:46:38of her imagination.
00:46:40Su Yan has been
00:46:41a ghost
00:46:41the whole time.
00:46:43Number 24.
00:46:44Black Phillip
00:46:45is Satan,
00:46:46the witch.
00:46:47Throughout the course
00:46:47of the witch,
00:46:48we're left wondering
00:46:49what's real
00:46:50and what's not.
00:46:51But in the end,
00:46:51writer-director Robert Eggers
00:46:53lets us know
00:46:54exactly what to believe.
00:46:56The film follows
00:46:56a family who's banished
00:46:57from a Puritan settlement,
00:46:59after which strange,
00:47:00possibly witch-induced
00:47:02events begin to occur.
00:47:03Furthermore,
00:47:04the young twins
00:47:05of the family
00:47:05start to say
00:47:06that the goat,
00:47:07Black Phillip,
00:47:07is speaking to them.
00:47:09We're led to believe
00:47:10the twins might be
00:47:11making this up
00:47:11until the very end
00:47:13of the movie.
00:47:14Black Phillip
00:47:15materializes into the devil
00:47:16while speaking
00:47:17to the family's
00:47:17eldest child,
00:47:18inviting her
00:47:19to live deliciously.
00:47:20What's thou like
00:47:22to live deliciously?
00:47:25Number 23.
00:47:26It's all in Patrick's head,
00:47:27American Psycho.
00:47:29Investment banker,
00:47:30serial killer.
00:47:31What's the difference,
00:47:32really?
00:47:33Not much
00:47:33when it comes
00:47:33to American Psycho.
00:47:35Throughout this
00:47:352000s satirical
00:47:37horror masterpiece,
00:47:38Patrick Bateman
00:47:39tortures and kills
00:47:40a number of people
00:47:41in brutal ways.
00:47:42One of these people
00:47:43is his colleague,
00:47:44Paul Allen,
00:47:45who he murders
00:47:45with an axe.
00:47:46Because it's not
00:47:47just about the pleasures
00:47:48of conformity
00:47:49and the importance
00:47:50of friends.
00:47:50It's also a personal
00:47:51statement about
00:47:52the band itself.
00:47:54Hey, Paul!
00:47:55But towards the end,
00:47:56as Patrick tries
00:47:57to confess to his
00:47:58murder spree,
00:47:59we learn that
00:48:00Allen is actually
00:48:01alive.
00:48:02Patrick might have
00:48:03never actually
00:48:03killed anyone
00:48:04and has been
00:48:05hallucinating his
00:48:06crimes for the
00:48:07entirety of the
00:48:08movie.
00:48:08This twist drives
00:48:10home the film's
00:48:10commentary on
00:48:11yuppie culture
00:48:12and toxic masculinity.
00:48:13But even after
00:48:14admitting this,
00:48:16there is no
00:48:16catharsis.
00:48:18My punishment
00:48:19continues to
00:48:19elude me
00:48:20and I gain
00:48:21no deeper
00:48:22knowledge of
00:48:22myself.
00:48:23Number 22.
00:48:24Jacob is Dead
00:48:25Jacob's Ladder
00:48:26When it comes to
00:48:27war movies,
00:48:28horror goes
00:48:29hand in hand
00:48:30and the 1990
00:48:31film Jacob's Ladder
00:48:32really drives
00:48:33that comparison
00:48:33home.
00:48:34The film stars
00:48:35Tim Robbins as
00:48:36Jacob,
00:48:36a Vietnam War
00:48:37vet,
00:48:38and flashes back
00:48:39and forth between
00:48:39his life during
00:48:40and after his
00:48:41service.
00:48:42A number of
00:48:42strange,
00:48:43disturbing events
00:48:44occur throughout
00:48:44the film,
00:48:45leading to the
00:48:46most terrifying
00:48:46reveal of all.
00:48:48We learn that
00:48:49due to a military
00:48:50experiment gone
00:48:50wrong,
00:48:51Jacob was killed
00:48:52by friendly fire.
00:48:53Everything that
00:48:54we've seen after
00:48:55his time in
00:48:56Vietnam has been
00:48:56some hallucinatory
00:48:58horrifying fever
00:48:59dream.
00:49:00He looks kind of
00:49:00peaceful,
00:49:01the guy.
00:49:03What a hell of a
00:49:04fight, though.
00:49:05Number 21.
00:49:06The Cult,
00:49:07Rosemary's Baby.
00:49:08Throughout
00:49:09Rosemary's Baby,
00:49:10Rosemary starts
00:49:11to suspect that
00:49:12her neighbors
00:49:12belong to a
00:49:13satanic cult that
00:49:14wants to use her
00:49:15unborn child for
00:49:16evil.
00:49:17She's almost there,
00:49:18but not quite.
00:49:19This 1968 horror
00:49:21flick is one of
00:49:21the very best,
00:49:23and its twist ending
00:49:23is one of the
00:49:24reasons why.
00:49:25After Rosemary
00:49:26gives birth,
00:49:27she's told that
00:49:28her baby was
00:49:28stillborn.
00:49:29But in the last
00:49:30scene, she discovers
00:49:32not only that her
00:49:33baby is alive,
00:49:34but that her husband
00:49:35Guy is not the
00:49:36father.
00:49:36When she discovers
00:49:37a satanic cult
00:49:38honoring her child,
00:49:39she notices that
00:49:40he has unusual
00:49:42eyes.
00:49:43The devil's eyes,
00:49:44one might say.
00:49:45Rosemary has given
00:49:46birth to the
00:49:47Antichrist.
00:49:48What have you done
00:49:49to him,
00:49:50you maniac?
00:49:51Satan is his
00:49:52father, not Guy.
00:49:54He came up from
00:49:55hell and begat a
00:49:56son of mortal woman.
00:49:58Hail Satan!
00:49:59Number 20.
00:50:00Esther is actually
00:50:00an adult woman.
00:50:02Orphan.
00:50:03We wouldn't be at
00:50:04all surprised if this
00:50:052009 horror movie
00:50:06turned a lot of
00:50:07prospective parents
00:50:07off the idea of
00:50:08adoption.
00:50:09Especially when you
00:50:10consider the
00:50:10terrifying twist.
00:50:11Everything about her
00:50:12could be alive.
00:50:13Everything.
00:50:13We have her passport,
00:50:15her birth certificate,
00:50:16school records,
00:50:16medical records.
00:50:17I'm halfway around
00:50:18the world.
00:50:19What is this?
00:50:20It's a piece of paper.
00:50:21After Kate and John
00:50:22adopt a young girl
00:50:23named Esther,
00:50:23the two struggle to
00:50:24get their new family
00:50:25member to open up.
00:50:26Tensions mount as
00:50:27Esther manipulates
00:50:28her new family,
00:50:29with only Kate suspecting
00:50:30something's wrong.
00:50:31It causes proportional
00:50:32dwarfism.
00:50:33She only looks like a
00:50:34child.
00:50:35According to our
00:50:36records, Lena Klammer
00:50:38was born in 1976.
00:50:40She's 33 years old.
00:50:42In a truly shocking
00:50:43moment, Kate learns
00:50:44too late that Esther,
00:50:46or perhaps we should
00:50:46say Lena, is really a
00:50:4833-year-old woman who
00:50:50suffers from a medical
00:50:51disorder that stunts
00:50:52her growth.
00:50:53Not only that, but
00:50:54Lena is a cold-blooded
00:50:55killer.
00:50:56Why was she at your
00:50:57hospital?
00:50:58She's dangerously ill.
00:50:59Violent.
00:51:00She killed seven people
00:51:01that we know of.
00:51:02Suddenly, the kid from
00:51:03Problem Child doesn't
00:51:04look so bad.
00:51:05Number 19.
00:51:06Tom was the
00:51:07invisible man all
00:51:08along.
00:51:09Or was he?
00:51:10The invisible man.
00:51:12Lee Winnell reinvented
00:51:13one of Universal's
00:51:14classic horror characters
00:51:15for the modern era
00:51:16in this 2020 film.
00:51:18What is happening?
00:51:18Cecilia, open the door!
00:51:20No!
00:51:21Open the door!
00:51:23After barely escaping
00:51:24the clutches of her
00:51:25cruel tech mogul partner,
00:51:26Adrian, protagonist
00:51:27Cecilia begins to
00:51:28believe that her ex is
00:51:29using cutting-edge
00:51:30invisibility technology
00:51:31to stalk her.
00:51:32If you fight me,
00:51:34I won't ever hurt you.
00:51:35I'll find someone you
00:51:36love and hurt them
00:51:37instead.
00:51:37Her terrifying suspicion
00:51:39proves correct, but
00:51:40with a twist.
00:51:41After the unseen
00:51:42assailant is shot and
00:51:43unmasked, he's revealed
00:51:44to actually be Adrian's
00:51:46brother Tom.
00:51:47Tom?
00:51:48But even this revelation
00:51:50is thrown into doubt,
00:51:51with Cecilia insisting this
00:51:52is just another facet of
00:51:53Adrian's twisted plot.
00:51:54It just goes to show that
00:52:00you cannot always believe
00:52:02what you see, or don't
00:52:03see in this case.
00:52:04Number 18.
00:52:06Marie Unmasked.
00:52:07High Tension.
00:52:08What begins as a quiet
00:52:10weekend of studying
00:52:11quickly turns nightmarish
00:52:12in this French horror
00:52:13thriller.
00:52:14And if the shocking
00:52:15violence doesn't leave
00:52:16an impression, the twist
00:52:17definitely will.
00:52:18The story follows two
00:52:25college girls, Marie and
00:52:26Alex, who stay with
00:52:27Alex's parents in their
00:52:28secluded home to study.
00:52:30But a sadistic killer
00:52:31arrives on their doorstep,
00:52:33taking out Alex's parents
00:52:34and kidnapping her.
00:52:35It's seemingly up to
00:52:36Marie to save Alex from
00:52:37certain death, until we
00:52:39learn that almost the
00:52:40entire scenario has been
00:52:41a fantasy playing out in
00:52:42Marie's head, and she's
00:52:43been the one maiming her
00:52:44way through numerous
00:52:45victims.
00:52:48It's a shame, because
00:52:50besides the whole being
00:52:51the killer part, she was
00:52:52a great protagonist.
00:52:55Number 17.
00:52:57The Old Couple is
00:52:58Possessed.
00:52:59The Skeleton Key.
00:53:00Being a live-in nurse is
00:53:01a demanding and often
00:53:02thankless job under the
00:53:03best of circumstances.
00:53:05Never mind when there
00:53:06are paranormal shenanigans
00:53:07going on.
00:53:07She says you see him in
00:53:09the mirrors.
00:53:10After being taken on to
00:53:11care for an elderly man
00:53:13living with the after
00:53:13effects of a stroke,
00:53:14nurse Caroline begins to
00:53:16suspect the man's wife
00:53:17Violet of Foul Play.
00:53:18I don't believe.
00:53:21I don't.
00:53:24No.
00:53:25This comes after Caroline
00:53:26finds a secret room filled
00:53:27with the tools of hoodoo
00:53:28magic in the attic, which
00:53:30is generally a red flag
00:53:31that something hinky is
00:53:32going on.
00:53:33But rather than simply a
00:53:35practitioner of hoodoo,
00:53:36Violet is revealed to be
00:53:37possessed by the spirit of
00:53:38a hoodoo magician from
00:53:39nearly a hundred years
00:53:40prior.
00:53:41It's harder every time.
00:53:44They just don't believe
00:53:45like they used to.
00:53:46Gotta get them riled up.
00:53:49Yep.
00:53:49We'd quit too.
00:53:51Number 16.
00:53:52It's All Staged.
00:53:53April Fool's Day.
00:53:55A typical twist in a
00:53:56horror movie involves the
00:53:57identity of the killer or
00:53:58killers.
00:53:59But the twist in this 80s
00:54:00slasher takes a different
00:54:01route by revealing there
00:54:03isn't a killer at all.
00:54:04Things seem par for the
00:54:09course as far as slasher
00:54:10movies go when the bodies
00:54:12begin to pile up at a fancy
00:54:13party thrown by a group of
00:54:14old college friends.
00:54:24But imagine the audience's
00:54:25surprise when it turns out
00:54:27the events of the movie were
00:54:27just an incredibly elaborate
00:54:29rehearsal for a murder mystery
00:54:30night and nobody was ever
00:54:32in any danger.
00:54:33What's this all about?
00:54:34And don't anyone say
00:54:35April Fool's again or I'll
00:54:37rip them apart.
00:54:41How's that for a twist?
00:54:42This slasher movie wasn't a
00:54:44slasher movie at all.
00:54:46Number 15.
00:54:47The Ancient Ones.
00:54:48The Cabin in the Woods.
00:54:50After their cabin trip is
00:54:51spoiled by some pesky
00:54:52zombies, friends Marty and
00:54:53Dana discover a massive
00:54:54facility full of monsters
00:54:56beneath the cabin.
00:55:00And after a surprise
00:55:01appearance by Sigourney
00:55:02Weaver herself, the
00:55:03pair learns the deeper truth.
00:55:05That the events of the film
00:55:06were an elaborate ritual to
00:55:08appease a group of elder gods
00:55:09who want nothing more than to
00:55:11see groups of teenagers meet
00:55:12their messy demise again and
00:55:14again.
00:55:14You don't need a film degree to figure out
00:55:25that the Ancient Ones craving for
00:55:27routine carnage is a somewhat
00:55:28scathing commentary on horror
00:55:30audiences, crystallizing the film's
00:55:31deconstruction of tired horror tropes
00:55:33and imploring filmmakers to try
00:55:35something new.
00:55:36Maybe it's time for a change.
00:55:38Number 14.
00:55:39Those aren't the real
00:55:41grandparents.
00:55:41The Visit.
00:55:42Director M. Night Shyamalan's reputation
00:55:44as the king of the twist ending is
00:55:46somewhat well-deserved, as most of his
00:55:48movies contain at least one shocking twist.
00:55:50We made a decision.
00:55:51You go.
00:55:52We're having a great time.
00:55:54Yeah.
00:55:54Heck, this isn't even the only movie of his
00:55:56on this very list.
00:55:58The twists can get more than a little
00:56:00stale, but there's just something about
00:56:01this one that gives us the creeps.
00:56:05Nana?
00:56:07Nana, are you okay?
00:56:11Good afternoon.
00:56:13After an odd yet seemingly innocent weekend
00:56:15at their grandparents, teens Becca and
00:56:17Tyler receive a shocking revelation that
00:56:19those aren't their grandparents.
00:56:21Where are Nana and Pop-Pop?
00:56:22You've been staying with those people
00:56:27the whole time?
00:56:28This reveal comes hot on the heels of a
00:56:30number of strange occurrences the
00:56:31parrot experienced, suddenly ratcheting
00:56:33up the already high tension to
00:56:34stratospheric levels.
00:56:36Number 13.
00:56:38Red is Adelaide.
00:56:39Us.
00:56:40Jordan Peele's electrifying follow-up to
00:56:42Get Out did not disappoint.
00:56:44Mixing great horror movie scares with a
00:56:46powerful undercurrent of social commentary
00:56:47even before you get to the shocking
00:56:49final reveal.
00:56:50They can't hurt you.
00:56:52You understand?
00:56:55After narrowly escaping her tethered
00:56:57doppelganger with her life and family
00:56:59intact, Mother Adelaide seems to be in
00:57:01the clear.
00:57:02She's brought my little coat.
00:57:06Except the audience is clued in via
00:57:08flashback that the woman we've been
00:57:09following for the whole film is the
00:57:11tethered.
00:57:22Adelaide and her tethered were switched
00:57:27during childhood, meaning the raspy-voiced
00:57:29red was actually the original, out for
00:57:31revenge after being exiled below ground.
00:57:34It's a twist that casts the entire movie
00:57:36in a new light, just like a great twist
00:57:38always does.
00:57:40Number 12.
00:57:41Samara is now free.
00:57:42The ring.
00:57:43We're betting that up until this infamous
00:57:45moment in the 2002 remake of the Japanese
00:57:47horror sensation, the protagonists were patting
00:57:49themselves on the back.
00:57:51You weren't supposed to help her.
00:57:53It's okay now.
00:57:54She's not gonna hurt you.
00:57:57She.
00:58:02After all, it's not every day you get to put
00:58:04the vengeful spirit of a dead child to rest,
00:58:06but you forgot that you made a copy, didn't you?
00:58:08Now your ex is dead and you have to continue
00:58:19passing the curse on in order to save your
00:58:21child.
00:58:22Great job.
00:58:23In all seriousness, the twist that the
00:58:24terrifying Samara was not put to rest by
00:58:26uncovering her grave and will continue to
00:58:29wreak vengeance on the living is still one
00:58:31of our favorites.
00:58:31And we still can't see TV static without
00:58:34shuddering.
00:58:34Number 11.
00:58:41The call is coming from inside the house.
00:58:43Black Christmas.
00:58:45A phone company's on the other line, sir.
00:58:46They say they got a trace on this one.
00:58:48Yeah, let's have it.
00:58:49In this 1970s Canadian slasher flick,
00:58:51the residents of a sorority house are plagued
00:58:53by a string of obscene and disturbing phone
00:58:55calls.
00:58:56But things just get worse when several of the
00:58:59residents are found dead.
00:59:00And the killer is behind the obscene calls.
00:59:02In the film's most iconic scene, a telephone
00:59:05company employee frantically traces the location
00:59:08of the mysterious caller and eventually discovers
00:59:10that the calls are coming from a second line
00:59:13inside the sorority house.
00:59:15For Christ's sakes, Nash, you got it wrong.
00:59:17That's where the calls are going into.
00:59:19That's where they're coming from too, sir.
00:59:21It's a terrifying reveal, one that kicks the tension
00:59:26in the film into overdrive, with the revelation
00:59:28that protagonist Jess is far from safe,
00:59:31despite being indoors and under police watch.
00:59:34Just tell her to put down the phone and walk straight
00:59:36out the front door.
00:59:38And sure, the reveal is similar to when a stranger calls,
00:59:41but this film did it first.
00:59:42Number 10.
00:59:43The Coagula Procedure.
00:59:45Get Out.
00:59:46Once again, Jordan Peele manages to pull off a twist
00:59:48that's not only terrifying on the surface,
00:59:50but casts the entire film up to that point in a new light.
00:59:54I know what you're thinking.
00:59:55What?
00:59:56Come on, I get it.
00:59:58White family, black servants, it's a total cliche.
01:00:04After meeting his girlfriend's parents for the first time,
01:00:06Chris begins to suspect something is amiss
01:00:08with the seemingly friendly couple.
01:00:09Phase one was the hypnotism.
01:00:13That's how they sedate you.
01:00:15Phase two is this, mental preparation.
01:00:19Following a series of unnerving encounters with the family,
01:00:21Chris is hypnotized and wakes up bound to a chair,
01:00:25a videotape informing him of his fate,
01:00:27to have his brain removed so that a rich old white person
01:00:30can have his body instead.
01:00:31So you won't be gone.
01:00:34Not completely.
01:00:35A sliver of you will still be in there somewhere.
01:00:37This twist, itself a commentary on how black bodies
01:00:40and physicality are commodified
01:00:42by seemingly well-meaning white people,
01:00:44cemented Peele and the film as horror royalty.
01:00:47Number nine.
01:00:48It's all in the killer's head.
01:00:50Identity.
01:00:51Who am I speaking to?
01:00:52Look at me.
01:00:53Who am I speaking to right now?
01:00:55In this horror slash thriller
01:00:57from Logan director James Mangold,
01:00:59a group of strangers find themselves
01:01:01stranded in a secluded motel
01:01:02and stalked by a mysterious killer.
01:01:04But this isn't your run-of-the-mill slasher movie.
01:01:06It's revealed late in the film
01:01:08that almost everything we've been seeing
01:01:10has been taking place inside the mind
01:01:12of a convicted serial killer.
01:01:14Why are you telling me this?
01:01:17Because you, that was,
01:01:20are one of his personalities.
01:01:22The victims are actually the killer's
01:01:24multiple personalities,
01:01:25and they're being killed off
01:01:26as part of his treatment.
01:01:28The it-was-all-a-dream or hallucination twist
01:01:31is honestly a little played out,
01:01:32but this version offers an admittedly fresh spin
01:01:35on the well-worn idea.
01:01:36To great effect.
01:01:38Where is my face?
01:01:39Number 8.
01:01:40Mrs. Voorhees is the killer.
01:01:42Friday the 13th.
01:01:43How are you?
01:01:45Well, I'm Mrs. Voorhees,
01:01:47an old friend of the Christie's.
01:01:49The machete-wielding,
01:01:50goalie-mask-wearing Jason Voorhees
01:01:52is without a doubt
01:01:53one of the biggest slasher icons.
01:01:56But as horror aficionados
01:01:57are fond of pointing out,
01:01:58he wasn't the primary villain
01:02:00in the first film
01:02:01in the Friday the 13th series.
01:02:03Jason should have been
01:02:04watched every minute.
01:02:06After a number of fellow
01:02:07camp counselors are brutally murdered,
01:02:09the film's protagonist Alice discovers
01:02:11that the killer is, in fact,
01:02:12Mrs. Voorhees,
01:02:14the mother of a deformed boy
01:02:15who drowned
01:02:16while the counselors were,
01:02:17shall we say,
01:02:18distracted.
01:02:19They were making love
01:02:20while that young boy drowned.
01:02:22Needless to say,
01:02:23the revelation that the seemingly
01:02:24kindly old lady in a sweater
01:02:25is a crazed killer
01:02:27doesn't do much
01:02:28to make Alice's day better.
01:02:29Look what you did to him!
01:02:36Number 7.
01:02:38The Girl Isn't Missing,
01:02:39The Wicker Man.
01:02:40You, Sergeant,
01:02:42are the right kind of adult.
01:02:44Before it was remade
01:02:46with Nicolas Cage
01:02:47and turned into an internet meme,
01:02:48this 1973 horror film
01:02:50was a darling
01:02:51of British horror cinema.
01:02:53The film begins
01:02:54when a police detective
01:02:55arrives at a small town
01:02:56on a secluded island
01:02:57after a local girl
01:02:58goes missing.
01:02:59But it quickly becomes clear
01:03:00that something is terribly wrong
01:03:02and that the villagers
01:03:03are part of a dangerous
01:03:05pagan cult.
01:03:06You came here
01:03:06to find Rowan Morrison.
01:03:09But it is we
01:03:09who have found you
01:03:10and brought you here
01:03:12and controlled your
01:03:13every thought and action
01:03:14since you arrived.
01:03:15The detective suspects
01:03:17the girl might have been taken
01:03:18as a human sacrifice,
01:03:19but it's worse.
01:03:21The girl was never kidnapped
01:03:22and it was all a ploy
01:03:24to lure him to the island
01:03:25to serve as the sacrifice himself.
01:03:27No!
01:03:29Think!
01:03:30Just think what you're doing!
01:03:32Think what you're doing!
01:03:33Think!
01:03:35Number 6.
01:03:36Jigsaw is the dead body
01:03:37in the bathroom.
01:03:39Saw.
01:03:43This infamous horror flick
01:03:44not only kicked off
01:03:45an entire franchise,
01:03:47but arguably started
01:03:48a whole new sub-genre.
01:03:50While the sequels
01:03:50went on to more gruesome
01:03:52and elaborate gore,
01:03:53the first one
01:03:53keeps it fairly simple.
01:03:55Two men find themselves
01:03:56chained in a bathroom
01:03:57with a corpse between them
01:03:58and a hacksaw each.
01:04:00The only way
01:04:00either of them can escape
01:04:01is to take that hacksaw
01:04:03to their own ankle.
01:04:04After much bloodshed,
01:04:06it's revealed
01:04:06that Jigsaw,
01:04:07the mysterious killer
01:04:08who orchestrated
01:04:09the whole thing,
01:04:10has been in the room
01:04:11the whole time,
01:04:12posing as the corpse
01:04:14lying between
01:04:15his two unlucky victims.
01:04:17Shocking,
01:04:17effective,
01:04:18and oh so twisted.
01:04:20Number 5.
01:04:28The family are ghosts.
01:04:29The others.
01:04:30Don't speak to them!
01:04:33Why?
01:04:34They're dead!
01:04:35This spooky,
01:04:36atmospheric horror gem
01:04:37stars a woman named Grace
01:04:39and her two children,
01:04:40who live in a secluded mansion
01:04:41following World War II.
01:04:43As anyone might
01:04:44if they lived in a house
01:04:45this creepy looking,
01:04:46Grace begins to suspect
01:04:48that her home is haunted.
01:04:49Turns out she's right,
01:04:51but not in the way
01:04:51she expected.
01:04:54After a series
01:04:55of terrifying encounters
01:04:56with what seem
01:04:57to be spirits,
01:04:58it's revealed
01:04:58that Grace and her children
01:05:00are the ghosts
01:05:00haunting the house,
01:05:01and the visions
01:05:02they've been seeing
01:05:03are the new residents.
01:05:04Children,
01:05:05if you're dead,
01:05:06why do you remain
01:05:08in this house?
01:05:09It's a clever inversion
01:05:10of the classic
01:05:11haunted house scenario
01:05:12that caught most
01:05:13cinema goers
01:05:14completely by surprise.
01:05:16What happened?
01:05:16They made contact.
01:05:21Number four.
01:05:22What David needlessly
01:05:23does to his group,
01:05:24the mist.
01:05:25Things look about
01:05:26as grim as they can
01:05:27possibly get
01:05:28for painter David Drayton
01:05:29and his family.
01:05:30Guys,
01:05:30let's get out of here now.
01:05:34Stop!
01:05:35After a strange mist
01:05:36envelops their sleepy
01:05:37New England town,
01:05:38monsters begin emerging
01:05:40from the strange fog
01:05:41and exterminating
01:05:42everyone they can get
01:05:43their tentacles,
01:05:44pincers,
01:05:44and claws on.
01:05:46David and his son
01:05:47flee in their car
01:05:47along with some
01:05:48other survivors
01:05:49in a desperate bid
01:05:49for safety.
01:05:51Poor boys.
01:05:56There's five of us.
01:05:58Eventually,
01:05:59the car runs out of gas,
01:06:00leaving David
01:06:01to make the ultimate
01:06:02sacrifice to keep them
01:06:03from a grislier fate.
01:06:05With not enough bullets
01:06:06to go round,
01:06:07David leaves the car
01:06:07to be eaten by the monsters,
01:06:09only to find
01:06:10the military has arrived
01:06:11to save the day.
01:06:12Hey!
01:06:14Talk about too little
01:06:26too late.
01:06:27Number three.
01:06:28Stu and Billy
01:06:29are the killers.
01:06:30Scream.
01:06:31Surprise, Sidney.
01:06:34This trend-setting
01:06:35slasher movie
01:06:36revitalized the genre
01:06:37for a new generation
01:06:38by injecting a dose
01:06:39of self-aware
01:06:40meta-commentary
01:06:41to liven things up.
01:06:42What's the matter, Sidney?
01:06:44You look like
01:06:44you've seen a ghost.
01:06:45This mainly takes
01:06:46the form of the
01:06:47teenage characters,
01:06:48who recognize
01:06:49that the mysterious
01:06:49killer stalking them
01:06:50is following the
01:06:51traditional rules
01:06:52of slasher films.
01:06:54Namely, stuff like
01:06:55if you have sex,
01:06:56do drugs,
01:06:56or say,
01:06:57I'll be right back,
01:06:58you'll be the next
01:06:58one to die.
01:06:59But rather than
01:07:00just two horror movie fans
01:07:01familiar with the
01:07:02tropes of the genre,
01:07:03the characters of
01:07:04Billy and Stu
01:07:05turn out to be
01:07:05the killers themselves,
01:07:06making the horror movie
01:07:08awareness of the
01:07:08Ghostface killer
01:07:09suddenly make
01:07:10a whole lot of sense.
01:07:11Yeah, we put her
01:07:12out of her misery
01:07:12because let's face it,
01:07:13Sidney, your mother
01:07:14was no Sharon Stone.
01:07:17Hmm?
01:07:17Number 2
01:07:18Malcolm Crowe is a Ghost
01:07:20The Sixth Sense
01:07:21I think I can go now.
01:07:23The twist,
01:07:24so infamous
01:07:24it started an entire meme,
01:07:26remains a fan favorite,
01:07:28even if it turned
01:07:29a promising new director
01:07:30into the twist-ending guy.
01:07:32The film tells the story
01:07:33of a young boy
01:07:33with the ability
01:07:34to see ghosts,
01:07:35which obviously leads
01:07:36to a near non-stop parade
01:07:38of terrifying encounters
01:07:39with the unquiet dead.
01:07:41Things look like
01:07:42they're getting better
01:07:43when he meets
01:07:43a child psychologist
01:07:44determined to help the boy
01:07:46to make amends
01:07:47for a previous failure.
01:07:48But in the end,
01:07:49it's famously revealed
01:07:50that Bruce Willis'
01:07:51Dr. Crowe
01:07:52is a ghost himself,
01:07:53having died
01:07:54after the film's
01:07:55opening scene.
01:07:56For cinema-goers
01:07:57in 1999,
01:07:58it was one blown mind
01:08:00after another.
01:08:01You were never second.
01:08:04Ever.

01:08:22Number 1.
01:08:22Norman Bates is the killer.
01:08:24Psycho.
01:08:25Mrs. Bates.
01:08:26Even before the shocking
01:08:40reveal at the film's climax,
01:08:42Alfred Hitchcock's
01:08:43horror opus
01:08:43already had audiences
01:08:45scared out of their minds.
01:08:46But that ending
01:08:47just made things worse.
01:08:48After watching
01:08:49numerous characters
01:08:50seemingly die
01:08:51at the hands
01:08:51of the apparently
01:08:52demented Mrs. Bates,
01:08:53audiences were stunned
01:08:55to learn
01:08:55that the killer
01:08:56was in fact
01:08:56her soft-spoken son
01:08:58Norman,
01:08:59who had preserved
01:08:59his dead mother's body
01:09:01and taken on her identity.
01:09:07Even decades
01:09:08after the film's release
01:09:09and subsequent enshrinement
01:09:11in popular culture,
01:09:12the reveal at the end
01:09:13of this legendary film
01:09:14remains the most shocking
01:09:16and memorable twist ending
01:09:17in the history
01:09:18of horror cinema.
