2026 Tesla Model Y Performance driven for the first time in USA. But is it worth the extra $8,500 and is the suspension super nausea inducing and bumpy like before?
Döküm
00:00The Tesla Model Y Performance!
00:05New adaptive suspension for better handling.
00:10Zero to 60 in 3.3 seconds.
00:18But is it just the normal Model Y with some fake engine sounds added?
00:22To find out, I spoke to the head of the engineering team as well as design team,
00:26Mr. Franz and Mr. Lars. Unfortunately, I'm not able to film them.
00:30So I will say what they said to me, to you.
00:33They also told me something so insane about the new Model Y Performance that's so special.
00:39None of the other Teslas have it, but we'll get to that.
00:41When they created the Model Y Performance,
00:43they did not want to create the same Model Y Performance previously,
00:47whereas very minimal exterior changes and more interior driving dynamic changes.
00:53So they put a lot of work into the Model Y Performance.
00:55Already what sets it apart is the front.
00:57You have a larger front diffuser here.
01:00The front lip is completely different.
01:01And the front end, it's subtle, but it does the job.
01:04When we move on to the side over here, we have the brand new 2.0 Arachnid wheels.
01:10They put a lot of design and work into this to make it super aerodynamic and efficient.
01:15And of course, because you have the Performance version,
01:17you do have the red Tesla brake calipers.
01:19The beauty with this though is, I mean, I personally love the look of them.
01:23If you wanted to, you could easily just remove these.
01:25Oh my God, they're so hard to remove.
01:26And I think it looks bussing.
01:29Now, it's crazy.
01:30You have a Performance vehicle.
01:31You can get summer tires to decrease drag even more,
01:34but it comes with some sexy Hankook Ion Evo all-season SUV EV tires.
01:42However, the beauty of that is the driving, which I'll talk about in a second, still really good.
01:47Moving on, you get all blacked out mirror caps now.
01:50It's a gloss black.
01:51It really sets it apart from the premium models.
01:54But other than that, from the side, it's like the exact same vehicle.
01:57And then we move to the rear.
02:00Now, carbon fiber spoiler.
02:01Okay, the trunk's going to open on me there.
02:03Carbon fiber spoiler, but they did make...
02:06Carbon fiber spoiler, but they made it longer this time to decrease drag.
02:10And it's all done with the purpose.
02:12When you look at this car from the rear,
02:13they really wanted the car to look like it's planted to the ground and actually be planted to the ground.
02:17You have the all-new rear diffuser here in gloss black.
02:20It looks good.
02:21And of course, you have the blue performance badge.
02:24And they really wanted to make it look aggressive, make it look wide.
02:26Have like this fake plastic piece here.
02:29Definitely more performance oriented.
02:30This is cool.
02:31But Franz told me he didn't want to make it feel like you're driving a race car.
02:36Because it still is an SUV.
02:37It still is a family vehicle.
02:39He wanted to make it look unique and different and sporty, but not overkill.
02:44The suspension's completely different too, but it's too technical.
02:47So I got to get out my notes.
02:48According to Lars, it has different knuckles, not hand knuckles.
02:52Sway bar bushings are different.
02:54Adaptive driving that becomes more fun for the driver.
02:58And the controller is a new gen controller.
03:01Different than any Tesla they've ever created.
03:04It's not in the Model 3 performance.
03:05The Tesla Model Y is the first ever to have this type of controller.
03:09So it adapts better to driving styles.
03:11So it can make changes better on the fly.
03:13That's super cool.
03:14Okay, so now we're going to drive the Model Y performance for the very first time.
03:18I'm so excited.
03:19I got my little Leigh bobblehead doll.
03:21We're going to see how the suspension is.
03:23If it's more bumpy, less bumpy.
03:25That's what we want to know, right?
03:26We're driving a performance vehicle, but does it feel like a performance vehicle?
03:30Let's find out.
03:31Let's see acceleration test.
03:32Does it have that Tesla PEP?
03:35Tesla PEP.
03:38We definitely have the Tesla PEP.
03:40Zero to 60.
03:423.3 seconds.
03:44510 horsepower.
03:50Dang.
03:52Oh man.
03:53Now with the normal Model Y, if I was to do that, you're going to really, really feel it spin a little bit.
03:58But with this one, it's so much fun.
04:05But largely saying how they did a lot of changes with the drivetrain.
04:08So it's firmly planted and it feels good.
04:10And you wasn't kidding.
04:12It's a very comfortable ride, surprisingly.
04:14Break the curves, break the curves, accelerate through, accelerate through, floor it, punch it.
04:19It is so much fun.
04:24And because this is the performance version, you can reduce stability if you want to do some donuts.
04:30So now it's unreduced, so it allows you to still have some fun.
04:34Oh man, the drivetrain is amazing.
04:49It handles so well.
04:52Oh yeah, it just rips it.
04:56Rips it and grips it.
04:58Now, I did drive a Porsche Macan EV.
05:02And when I drove that, I had a lot of fun with it.
05:06And I'm not going to lie, man.
05:08Driving the Model Y Performance, I have a similar feeling of just that pure joy.
05:16Seats are comfy.
05:18Oh my god, the thigh bolsters are insane.
05:20There's three acceleration modes, chill, standard, and insane.
05:24Once we go to chill, I'm pushing on the accelerator, nothing really happens.
05:28It's a very chill drive.
05:31I push on it and I just kind of have to anticipate the acceleration.
05:35Standard.
05:38Standard is the normal.
05:40I can still have a lot of fun on standard.
05:42But insane really kicks it up so that the power is just instantly there when you need it.
05:47Look at that.
05:49Yup.
05:50There's two options for ride and handling.
05:52Standards for a smoother ride.
05:54Whereas Sport has a firmer, more controlled ride.
05:57Now, I do notice I am feeling a little bit more of the bumps.
06:02As in the suspension is definitely firmer on the performance.
06:06It's not a crazy difference.
06:07I'm not like Model Y classic suspension where I'm jumping all over the place.
06:12Brace yourself.
06:13But I do feel it.
06:15But I do feel it.
06:16I do feel a difference for sure.
06:17Now remember, this is with the larger wheels.
06:20It's with the 21 inchers.
06:22And bigger wheels usually mean a harsher ride because there's less rubber to absorb the bumps.
06:27On the Model Y premium, I have the smaller 19 inch wheels and the ride is noticeably smoother.
06:32But I really want to show you the difference.
06:33So I took the Model Y performance and premium on the same road.
06:37Little Lee definitely wobbled more in the Model Y performance.
06:40But that's expected since there's firmer suspension and bigger tires.
06:44Barely shaken.
06:45The premium suspension feels good.
06:48Regen braking still feels just as good.
06:50No difference there.
06:51We're going to do a quick brake test as well.
06:54Do the brakes feel better or about the same as the normal Model Y?
06:59Oh yeah, brakes feel firm.
07:01They feel strong.
07:02They feel amazing.
07:04Turn test.
07:04U-turn test is good.
07:08Holy!
07:10Oh yeah.
07:12Okay.
07:12Now I understand.
07:13So what Franz was saying, he wants someone who gets into the Model Y performance to have the
07:17best car possible.
07:19If you want to drive spirited.
07:21If you want to have a good time.
07:22Like on the weekends right now, I want to have a fun time driving through the canyons here.
07:28I can do that no problem.
07:32But Tesla didn't just change the driving dynamics.
07:35They changed the one thing that matters most.
07:38And underneath here, I can't see.
07:42It's a brand new Panasonic battery.
07:45Completely new.
07:46Not in any Tesla ever.
07:47It offers 4.7% more energy.
07:50And it's amazing because this is the first Tesla Model Y performance ever to reach over 300 miles.
07:55306 miles at 100%, which is awesome.
07:57It can still charge.
07:58At Tesla supercharges 250 kilowatts.
08:00So you get 144 miles in 15 minutes.
08:03But this is the second Tesla in the USA to have this feature.
08:07Let's see if we have it.
08:08I don't know if we're going to have it though.
08:09Come on Tesla.
08:10Did they provide it?
08:11Oh my god, it's here.
08:15Look at this.
08:17It has a standard plug.
08:19It's called vehicle to load.
08:20Where you can take this, plug it into your mobile connector.
08:26Plug it into your Tesla.
08:28So it's on.
08:31You can see that it's on.
08:32It shows on the screen.
08:34Power share is active.
08:36So I could just take, you know.
08:37I'm having a bad hair day.
08:40I'm so curious if this one.
08:41Oh my god, it works.
08:42The ranger looked at me all funny.
08:54I could use this with my Tesla.
08:56That's so cool.
08:58And don't tell anybody.
09:00But Franz and Lars did say that they're working on it to be compatible vehicle to home.
09:06So you can power your home with the Tesla Model Y eventually.
09:10Just like the Tesla Cybertruck.
09:12Crazy.
09:13And you can even charge another EV.
09:15God, I hope this works.
09:18Just kidding.
09:20It's green.
09:21So now that my hair is perfect.
09:22Let's talk about the interior changes.
09:24So the second you enter.
09:26Kind of looks like a normal Tesla Model Y.
09:29But there are tons of subtle differences.
09:31So one change.
09:32The door thing.
09:33Look, it's a performance badge right here.
09:35I don't know if you can see it.
09:36But it shines a performance badge on the floor.
09:38You still have all the sound dampening.
09:40All the felt.
09:41You have the dual pane glass.
09:43It feels very, very familiar and comfortable.
09:45Which is great if you're coming from the premium Model Y.
09:48But you get a nice new carbon fiber right here.
09:52Just to prove that's a performance version.
09:54The dashboard is also a very subtle carbon fiber look.
09:58It's not obvious that it's carbon fiber until you look closer.
10:01However, the coolest change are the seats.
10:05Driving the Model Y Performance with the new seat bolsters.
10:09It just hugs your body.
10:11It just cocoons you.
10:12It feels great.
10:13Not as good as a Porsche Macan EV, but very good.
10:16You can already tell the huge difference with the side bolsters here.
10:19And because we have the Model Y Performance, you get that performance badge.
10:23So very similar to the Model 3 Performance in that aspect.
10:26This headrests are completely different.
10:28Even the seat stitching on the Model Y Performance is new.
10:31It's unique.
10:32But it's kind of grippy.
10:33So it kind of grips you a little bit better.
10:34I think this is what they mean by the micro suede or something.
10:37Because I feel the grip on here.
10:39It is nice.
10:40And the first in America.
10:43Because I know it's in the Model Y L in China.
10:45This is especially helpful for those tall people out there.
10:48Even Franz said so.
10:49You have an additional seat control here.
10:52With, and I love this feature.
10:55An extended thigh support.
10:58Look at how far this goes out.
11:00It's so legit.
11:02It adds like an extra two inches.
11:04And you still have lumbar control.
11:06You still have all your seat controls there.
11:08And it feels so comfortable.
11:09Especially if you're on a long road trip.
11:12It's so nice.
11:13I like it a lot.
11:14Everything else is the same.
11:15You have the center console area.
11:17You have your cup holders.
11:18You have storage.
11:19Not much real difference between the Model Y premium version.
11:24Or so I thought.
11:25Until the first in America.
11:28To have the new and updated center screen.
11:32It's a solid 16 inches.
11:34Less bezels.
11:35It's QHD.
11:36Solid 4k.
11:37The blacks are blacker.
11:39The camera quality is busting.
11:41It's more responsive.
11:42It's bright.
11:43Like this is a nice display.
11:45But I mean.
11:46Even though this is a performance oriented vehicle.
11:48It's still a family SUV.
11:50But it's still a family vehicle in the back.
11:52So getting into the second row.
11:53Already I saw.
11:55They still have that carbon fiber piece in the second row too.
11:57So they continue the theme.
11:58Very nice.
11:59Very simple.
12:01Still very quiet.
12:02Still comfortable in here.
12:04You don't have any back seat pockets.
12:06Because these are the new performance seats.
12:08But I still have tons of space.
12:10You still have the center screen.
12:11You still have all the stuff that kids love.
12:14And everything else is pretty much the same.
12:15It's still automatic.
12:16Reclining.
12:17You still got the cup holders here.
12:20No real difference there.
12:21And it's very very comfortable.
12:23It still feels like a family vehicle.
12:25But what does it actually feel like to ride as a passenger?
12:29That's a big bump.
12:31Yeah it's very comfortable back here.
12:33Here's what I found.
12:35I definitely feel the stiffer suspension in the back here.
12:39So we are on standard suspension.
12:41It's a bumpy road.
12:42But it's not too bad.
12:44And it's very open back here.
12:46Because it's a performance vehicle.
12:47They definitely stiffened up the suspension.
12:50So it is definitely a little bit bumpier.
12:53Whoa!
12:54The brake test.
12:55Nice brakes.
12:57But is the storage capacity and the performance model the same?
13:00Looks like the trunk is the exact same.
13:02As yep.
13:04As the newer Model Y.
13:0576 cubic feet in the front as well.
13:08Nothing's changed there.
13:10It's good.
13:10You get tons of utility.
13:11Tons of storage space.
13:12But you can't have a Tesla without the tech.
13:15But with the Model Y performance you get a couple of different features.
13:18The biggest different features you get is under dynamics.
13:21You have insane acceleration.
13:23And you also have launch mode available.
13:25Where if you wanted to.
13:26You just put your foot on the brake and the accelerator.
13:29And then you can launch the vehicle.
13:31Turn it to launch.
13:41Handling is still really good too.
13:44No track mode unfortunately.
13:46And they did that on purpose.
13:47They found that nobody used track mode in the Model Y performance previously.
13:51So they said if you want track mode.
13:53And you want to go to the track.
13:54Get a Model 3 performance.
13:56But there's another cool feature.
13:58They like to call it donut mode.
14:00And hopefully one day they can have donut mode.
14:02You still have deceleration.
14:04Reduce or standard if you wanted to.
14:07But now they have a ride and handling for standard and sport.
14:10They also have steering weight.
14:11Light, standard, heavy.
14:12So even though you get a performance vehicle.
14:14You're able to get a couple extra features.
14:16That make it a better driving vehicle.
14:18For driving.
14:19But it's still a Tesla.
14:20It still has all the tech.
14:21It still has all the features.
14:22You can still use autopilot.
14:24So when you don't want to drive.
14:25And the kids are super annoying.
14:27You're like shut up.
14:29Put on autopilot.
14:30Boom.
14:31Done.
14:31And this is so awesome.
14:32It's like the best of both worlds.
14:34Family friendly vehicle on weekdays.
14:36When you have to drop off the kids.
14:37But performance vehicle on weekends.
14:39When it's just you and the boys.
14:41I drove 12 miles in this thing.
14:43And I was ripping it and gripping it the whole time.
14:46You don't believe me?
14:47Look at my efficiency.
14:48625.9 watts per mile.
14:52Hopefully I can get it to 626.
14:54But here's the issue with spending an extra $8,500 on the performance.
14:59The Model Y Premium is already a good car.
15:02It drives great.
15:03You're also left with less miles.
15:05327 on the Model Y Premium versus 306 on the Model Y Performance.
15:10Your tires wear faster.
15:12Your insurance is probably going to cost more.
15:14But the crazy thing.
15:16And probably why I'm going to get the car myself.
15:18Is this car is still less than $60,000.
15:21Fully loaded.
15:22It has amazing performance.
15:24Amazing handling.
15:26But you still have the utility.
15:27You still have the interior storage space.
15:29So it's very very practical.
15:31And that's what Franz and Lars were telling me.
15:33They said they want to make sure the Model Y Performance still stays true.
15:36To being a family friendly SUV.
15:39But when you want to.
15:41And when you want the best car.
15:42To get you from point A to point B.
15:45The Model Y Performance is going to be there.
15:48And I was talking to Franz.
15:49And I said hey Franz in a perfect world.
15:51Like what would you want in a perfect vehicle.
15:53He just wanted a little bit more subtle changes.
15:54Like the door handles to be the color of the paint.
15:57He didn't want to make it so like once you get into a Model Y Performance.
16:00You're like in a race car.
16:02And it's like look at me.
16:02I'm in this cool looking race car.
16:04He wanted it to be still be a little subtle.
16:06And of course he wanted to keep that brand of Tesla.
16:09With that simple interior.
16:10There are a couple of small tweaks you want to do.
16:12Like on the dashboard and stuff like that.
16:14But he told me that it'll be too much.
16:16It'll be too much and outside of Tesla's normal range.
16:19It was cool.
16:19I wish I could record it.
16:20So Franz if you're watching.
16:21Lars if you're watching.
16:23I would love to have some sort of interview with you guys.
16:26I'm sure all the people out there would want to see it.
16:27Let me know in the comments below.
16:28If you guys want to see something like that.
16:30But man they really put a lot of work into this new Model Y Performance.
16:34And I'm pretty excited for it.
16:36And Everyday Chris approves of it.
