00:00We will now have a speech by Barbara Rajan from our very own Tamil youth organization.
00:21We are gathered here today at Maviranaar 2025 to commemorate our beloved Maviranaar.
00:28Maviranaar was first held by our Taliban mama on the 27th of November 1989,
00:36the date marking the martyrdom of our very first Maviranaar, Lieutenant Shankar.
00:41Every year since, Ulam Tamils across the world gather on this day to pay respects to our hero,
00:47who gave up their dawn so that we could witness our sunrise.
00:53They fought for our nation till their last breath.
00:56Their courage and their bravery is the very reason I am able to stand here before you and talk today.
01:03So the youth of today, I have a message for you all.
01:07Do not make the sacred day, Maviranaar, a day of pure loss.
01:12Yes, it is the moment to honour the past, but stand firm in the present
01:17and continue to fight for the future of our nation with the same fierceness of our Maviranaar.
01:26The struggle is not over.
01:29The pain endured by Ulam Tamils persists,
01:32and the Sri Lankan state genocide on our people remains masked.
01:36A common false narrative that the youth seem to have instilled within themselves
01:41is that since 2009, the height of the Tamil genocide,
01:45we are living peacefully in Sri Lanka.
01:48Just try telling a mother of the 146,679 unencounted for,
01:55who is still looking for her son till this day, that the war is over.
01:59Try telling the families of the 169,796 that they can live at peace now,
02:09still under the hands of the same genocidal government.
02:13By the way, these numbers are just from the final stages of the genocide,
02:18so your explanation will have to go beyond 316,475,000 families.
02:25Our people endured a genocide, war crimes, sexual assault, crimes against humanity,
02:33all whilst the world turned a blind eye to them.
02:36And where is the justice?
02:38The diaspora youth cannot stress enough how important it is to continue.
02:43The journey of our Maviranaar and Talibanaar paid for us
02:46need to be engraved into our hearts.
02:51Just imagine if they had the same defeater's mentality.
02:56Would you be here today?
02:58Now let's talk about the new regime that we have here.
03:02Many of you are so hopeful of this so-called one-nation regime
03:05by the JVP president,
03:08the same JVP president which strongly opposed a mere illusion of freedom,
03:14the Indi-Langka Accord in 1989.
03:16The same regime that allowed an illegal construction of a Buddhist shrine
03:21around two weeks ago.
03:23The same government that still continues to intensify militarization in Tamil Olam.
03:30How often do you guys see army soldiers in your day-to-day life
03:35living abroad in the UK?
03:37A state's military force is there to protect the security of the country.
03:42Olam Tamils are still seen as a threat
03:45and not unequal by the genocidal state.
03:49The one-nation regime is yet another mask for the genocidal Sri Lankan state
03:54to continue enforcing and implementing a singular Buddhist ideology
03:59so that the Tamil culture, heritage and identity is wiped out.
04:03This is a form of structural genocide.
04:09Around 240 bodies were uncovered at Semini so far.
04:15Some with school bags, baby bottles and children's clothes.
04:19What did a baby do for them to be killed, discarded and buried as if they were nothing?
04:24This is a literal horrific example of the chauvinistic singular Buddhist state
04:30conducting an ethical cleanse.
04:33A genocide alongside Sanchola, Muli Vaikal, Black July and the list goes on.
04:40The list goes on but little to no justice, accountability or responsibility.
04:45So before you identify yourself as a Sri Lankan and by the Sri Lankan flag
04:51remind yourself of the history that you're actively helping masks
04:55and the genocidal states that you're unknowingly supporting.
04:59We are proud Ulam Tamils
05:01and that flag stands before us is the national flag.
05:06The flag of Tamil Ulam
05:08gifted by our beloved Talibur
05:10and defended by our Mahvira until their last breath.
05:15The UK has a moral responsibility
05:19to address the genocide due to its colonial involvement
05:22and as the genocide of our people began
05:25in the post-British independence era
05:27we, as the youth residing in the UK
05:31must ensure that our voices are heard by this government
05:35loud enough to ensure that our demands
05:38are met by the international bodies beyond our government.
05:42justice delayed is justice denied
05:45and we have waited long enough.
05:48This year for TYO
05:50it was enlightening to see Tamil societies
05:52come forward to commemorate our Mahvira
05:55at our commencement event with Brunel Universities
05:58as well as Tamil schools engaging with us
06:01to educate our young ones on our struggle
06:03whilst teaching our language, culture and tradition.
06:07as the diaspora youth
06:09we are the voices for our brothers and sisters back home
06:13unfortunately
06:14they do not have the same privilege as we do living abroad.
06:18I would like to end this speech
06:20reiterating one of Talibur Mama's Sindhina's
06:24new young generation should form itself
06:27into future sculptures of our nation.
06:30A new revolutionary generation should arise
06:34as the gifted ones, patriots, experts
06:37and those excel in honesty and dignity.
