00:00Australians have always loved the beach, so many of us are now making the move to our beautiful coastlines.
00:11Our beachfront dreamers want crashing waves and salty sea air, so grab your sunscreen and join us on the hunt for the ultimate beach house.
00:21It's been a hard day hunting.
00:30I'm working with a gorgeous young family, Dan, Shay and their little baby Harvey.
00:36They've been living in a two-bedroom apartment and they've finally decided that now is the time to find their forever family home.
00:43It's not going to happen that close to the city, but we would like to be by the water, so here we are in the gateway to the Mornington Peninsula, Frankston.
00:50Let's see how we go.
00:51We just love being outdoors. Beach is such a great place to be, and there's nothing better than the water in summer, just living that outdoors lifestyle.
01:04We're looking to buy a family home with more space, close to the beach, close to amenities, where we can continue to grow our family.
01:12We have a little 18-month-old Harvey, hoping to have another baby soon, so he needs something, obviously, with more bedrooms.
01:19We're in a little unit at the moment.
01:21Our budget is around $1.35, so ideally looking for three-bedroom minimum, preferably four, so we have that spare room option for family to come and stay.
01:32Big backyard, ideally, because Harvey loves being outside, so space for him to explore and spend time outside.
01:38And we need a bath, yeah, especially with the...
01:42Not for Harvey, for Dan.
01:43Yeah, I'm a bit of a bath man, so...
01:46But we'll say it's for Harvey.
01:48Bath man, Dan.
01:52Nestled on Victoria's picturesque coastline, Frankston is one of the most underrated gems,
01:58offering a laid-back beachside lifestyle, family-friendly atmosphere and a growing arts and food scene.
02:04With stunning beaches, parklands and a strong sense of community, Frankston is the perfect place for Dan and Shay's forever home.
02:12Good morning, Shay. Hey, Dan. How are you?
02:20Hi, Shay. How are you?
02:21Great to see you. Very excited about today, because nothing gives me more joy than sticky beating through houses.
02:27I'll be honest about it.
02:28We love it as well.
02:30I know this is going to be your first real home, and it is a big move from a unit to a full block of your own.
02:36What are you really hunting for?
02:38Look, I think we're just looking for space, really.
02:40More bedrooms. We're currently in a two-bedroom unit, and we have a toddler, and Dan works from home, so...
02:45With an 18-month-old, yeah, you're in no rush to move again anytime soon.
02:49So we want to set something in place here, which is a little bit future-proofed, which is going to give you some longevity and room to grow, yeah?
02:56Absolutely, yeah.
02:57House number one.
02:59We've got a huge block here. It's 855 square metres, so you've got a lot of room to move.
03:04It's four bedrooms.
03:05Yeah, great.
03:06Two bathrooms.
03:07This magnificent wisteria that's growing all the way along.
03:09In summer, this will be dripping with purple flowers.
03:12Wow.
03:13It will be magnificent.
03:14So it looks grand compared to what we're in right now.
03:16Much bigger.
03:17Everything looks good compared to a two-bedroom unit, doesn't it? Yeah.
03:20All right, you ready to head inside?
03:21Yeah, let's have a look.
03:22Come on in.
03:26Yeah, I see in the front of the house, like, it's big.
03:29I'm not sure about the orange brick. It's a little ugly.
03:31Yeah, we could definitely paint that, though, maybe, or render it.
03:34And the vine across the balustrade is...
03:37That vine's pretty cool.
03:37Okay.
03:45Okay.
03:46So, as it sits, it's not the 60s on the outside.
03:50Yeah.
03:50It's beautiful and fresh inside.
03:52It's quite big and spacious, and the windows.
03:55There's so much natural light.
03:56It's huge.
03:57¡Gorgeous! ¡I love these corner windows!
04:00Inside the house, it's definitely
04:01more refreshed than outside the
04:03house. I thought, I was sort of expecting
04:05we might need to do a bit more work, a bit more
04:07renovating to it, but it has been updated.
04:09How good's that fireplace?
04:11And I love the way that it's
04:13double-sided, so you've got it here in the kitchen
04:15and then it does play through
04:16to the living room, but look, this is really
04:19a blank canvas. You guys can do whatever
04:21you want. The lights are a bit funny,
04:23but otherwise, it's, yeah, I don't know,
04:25there's a bit to work on. You're not into this
04:27sconces? No, I don't know. I love them.
04:29It looks like a clam or something.
04:31I love them. They're very
04:33wabi-sabi. What are they doing?
04:35Yeah, they're very... Bespoke. Again,
04:37the kitchen, workable for you.
04:39Who's the cook in this couple? Me.
04:41So, yeah, I can see there's induction cooktop
04:43and nice neff appliances,
04:45huge island bench, so definitely would
04:47make cooking nice and easy.
04:49A bit more storage as well than what we're used to.
04:51Yeah. I could see ourselves living
04:53here. It's definitely like the
04:55open sort of plan with the kitchen
04:57and living. You know, if Harvey was
04:59playing with toys or doing something in the lounge room while I'm
05:01cooking dinner, I could always have eyes on him.
05:03The bedroom wing is just down the back.
05:05Head down there. I think the primary
05:07suite is pretty impressive. Ultimately,
05:09it comes down to where you guys are going to spend
05:11your time when you just need a little time out.
05:13Yes. That is important.
05:15Head down and have a look and I'll see you out the back.
05:17Wow.
05:23Oh, wow. This is good guys.
05:24Yeah.
05:25This is huge.
05:27I love these.
05:28Yeah, these windows are so nice.
05:29So much natural light.
05:31Yeah, it's beautiful.
05:32Yeah, the walk-in robe, like, that's amazing.
05:34And I think that's a king bed.
05:37So, yeah, it is a nice size.
05:39Good shower.
05:40Room for a bath on the side there.
05:42That's what you could probably do with that.
05:43Yeah, it is pretty big.
05:44I mean, they probably could have used the space better in there.
05:46Yeah, like over near the toilet, like, that's just dead space.
05:49Like, I don't know.
05:50There's so much cabinetry, but, yeah,
05:53this bedroom on the side is almost bigger than our house.
05:55Yeah.
05:56It's massive.
06:07Wow.
06:07It doesn't stop, does it?
06:08Yeah, it's very big.
06:10That, it's a bit different.
06:11Yeah, but not the prettiest, but very functional.
06:16Yes.
06:17The decking is exceptional.
06:19It's really, really big.
06:20Nice for entertaining.
06:22Yeah, and great for Harvey too, so he can still play outside,
06:24even if it's wet, because he does really enjoy being outside.
06:26So, that's a really huge plus.
06:28This is on the market now,
06:30and what do you think the vendors are asking?
06:32I don't know.
06:32What do you think?
06:33It's a bit of work that's needed,
06:35probably for us to get it up to how we'd like to live in it.
06:38So, I'd be looking at 1.25 to 1.3.
06:41Yes, I think the land size will come into it
06:43compared to some of the other properties
06:44we've sort of looked at online,
06:46is that this is such a big block.
06:48So, yeah, probably around the 1.3, 1.35 mark, I would say.
06:52The vendors are looking around the 1.4.
06:55Okay.
06:56Okay.
06:57The asking price seems quite fair and reasonable to me,
06:59considering the land size,
07:01where it's actually located in Frankston South.
07:03Four-bedroom, two-bathroom, around 1.4,
07:06probably seems fair.
07:09Coming up.
07:11Oh, he's perked up a little bit now.
07:13I like it, I like it.
07:14It's, yeah, it's beautiful.
07:28It's like a beach in your front yard.
07:30Yeah, it is.
07:32It's big, lots of garden.
07:33Yeah.
07:34This is really cute, though, the frontage.
07:36We're looking at a traditional Victorian beach shack.
07:39Yeah.
07:39Built in the 50s.
07:40Wow.
07:40It's had a little bit of work done since,
07:43a couple of little renovations along the way,
07:45but very much in its original state, original condition.
07:49There is some work to be done.
07:50Yeah.
07:50But you could absolutely make this your own.
07:53We're only 500 metres from the beach.
07:54Wow.
07:55Very, yeah, lots of character.
07:56I can see that from the outside.
07:57It's your beach shack, isn't it?
07:58Yeah.
07:58Yeah.
07:58It looks old, but super cute,
08:00so looking forward to seeing what the inside looks like.
08:02Well, let's check it out.
08:03Let's get on in.
08:03The name of the home, Florieux.
08:15Florieux.
08:16Super sweet.
08:17Very French.
08:17You've got this little stable door here,
08:19so you can have it shut for Harvey and Douglas
08:21and leave the top open for airflow.
08:23There's just a lot of character elements.
08:25Yeah, definitely.
08:27That's really sweet.
08:28I feel like this is the sort of house that you walk into
08:31and you go, ah, yes, or, whoa, that's some work.
08:34Yes.
08:35Either way, I think it's super cute.
08:37Got that relaxed vibe about it, for sure.
08:40That's exactly what I felt when I walked in.
08:42I was like, whoa, this is cute.
08:44A lot of work, but it feels like a holiday home.
08:47It's like one of those ones where you'd be happy to,
08:49you know, go away for the weekend and just relax
08:52and hang out, have a wine, a cheese board.
08:54Yeah, it's very, very aesthetically pleasing.
08:56Yeah, look, it's styled to perfection too.
08:59You can tell that the owner loves every minute of being here.
09:03You feel like you're close to the beach.
09:05You feel like you're in a beach cottage.
09:07The walls, they're all right.
09:09There's a few cracks, but you can tell that it needs a little bit of love.
09:12Spot on, Dan.
09:12Are you the team to do it?
09:14We'll find out.
09:14Yes.
09:15Come into the kitchen.
09:15Oh, there's a sconce, Dan.
09:27Is that less offensive for you?
09:28It's a bit nicer than the one in the other house.
09:32Just that pantry's huge.
09:33Oh, he's perked up a little bit now.
09:35I like it.
09:36I like it.
09:37It's, yeah, it's beautiful.
09:38I love the character of it.
09:40I can see myself here in the morning having a pot of coffee.
09:42And, yeah, it's just, it feels, feels holiday.
09:47Yes.
09:47I'm a little worried.
09:48It feels much smaller than the previous house we've looked at, though.
09:51It definitely feels like a weekender sort of feeling.
09:54That's what I'm getting.
09:55But I'm not sure about, like, every day, just with, like,
09:57the dishwasher sort of under the bench there,
09:59just practically how the layout is.
10:01But it definitely has a really nice feeling to it, that's for sure.
10:05Two bedrooms in the bathroom down that way.
10:06And then I'd love to show you the backyard.
10:08So I'll meet you out there.
10:09Okay.
10:10Let's check it out.
10:12How gorgeous are the windows?
10:19A bit smaller than the last one that we were in, but...
10:21Yeah.
10:22I love these, like, old, original windows.
10:24They're beautiful.
10:26I wonder if it has en suite, though.
10:28No, en suite.
10:29Unless it's...
10:30Oh, no.
10:30That's just covered.
10:33Oh, some beautiful, original paper.
10:36That's old school, isn't it?
10:38Oh, yeah.
10:41That's definitely, um, smaller.
10:44It's tight.
10:45And probably need some updating slate floors.
10:48That shower looks iconic.
10:50Definitely a reno job.
10:52Yeah.
10:52Yeah.
10:52It's not often that I'll bust out the camera and take photos when I'm filming.
11:01But this house has done something to me.
11:04I don't know what.
11:05It's very special.
11:06And you can see it on my Instagram.
11:14It's very romantic.
11:15It is.
11:16It's the only word I can think of.
11:17Yeah, it's a good word for it, actually.
11:19It just feels so cosy and, like, you're in a rainforest somewhere.
11:22But, yeah, close to the beach.
11:24Yeah.
11:24And your home office over here, Dan, this is all happening.
11:27Yeah, you're talking my language.
11:29Yeah.
11:29So I'd be out there.
11:30Manshed.
11:30Lock on the door.
11:32Away from the chaos inside that there's a toddler.
11:35So, take a guess.
11:37How much are we going for?
11:38Yes.
11:38What do you think, Dan?
11:39Well, it's big land and it's got proximity to the beach.
11:43So I'd say maybe 1.25 to 1.3.
11:47Okay.
11:48Yeah, I would have said round of 1.2,
11:50just with only the three bedrooms, yeah, and one being in a bungalow.
11:56Well, the vendors are asking 1.1 to 1.2.
12:00Oh, wow.
12:01Okay.
12:01So there is a lot left in your kitty to do the work that you might think needs to be done.
12:05To do the work, yeah.
12:06To do the work.
12:08I was shocked.
12:10It was a little bit lower for the land size and the proximity to the beach.
12:13It made my ears prick up a little bit because the house does need work,
12:17but if you're getting it at that price point,
12:19you can probably tip $100,000 or $200,000 into it
12:22and then get it up to it being a family home
12:24and still retaining that character feel to it all.
12:31Coming up.
12:32Ah, hello.
12:33Oh, hello.
12:35Come on up.
12:36Come and join me.
12:38Didn't mean to scare you.
12:43So right down the end of the battle axe.
12:53It's elusive, isn't it?
12:54It is.
12:55I can see a garage and that's about it at the moment.
12:57Four bedrooms.
12:58Okay.
12:59Two bathrooms.
13:0170s build.
13:02I think...
13:03Well, I think you're going to be surprised.
13:05Okay.
13:05Let's have a look.
13:06Let's check it out.
13:07You ready, Dan?
13:07Let's do it.
13:08House 3.
13:08House 3.
13:08House 3.
13:08Get ready for a step back in time.
13:22Whoa.
13:25Walking in, it was absolutely incredible.
13:29How gorgeous are those lights?
13:31Blown away by how unique it was, wallpaper,
13:34things that I wouldn't normally consider that I would like.
13:38Wow.
13:39Wow.
13:40Everything old is new again.
13:41This is incredible.
13:43This is so light.
13:43Those windows.
13:45So much to look at and comment on.
13:46I don't know where to start.
13:48The architecture, the interior design,
13:51everything is just perfect.
13:55It's your own Brady Bunch house.
13:56Character, character, character.
13:58Like, walking in, it's just like, wow.
14:00That, that, that.
14:02Yeah, you're just pointing to everything.
14:03And the island bench, like,
14:05you could actually have family dinner around that
14:07or, you know, set up Mexican night.
14:09You've just got so much room for everybody.
14:11I actually love mid-century style.
14:12Like, all the light fittings
14:14and the beautiful, like, original range hood
14:16is incredible.
14:17I mean, neither of us would know
14:19how to take advantage of that piano.
14:21I think it'd probably go with the owners, yeah.
14:23I don't think that gets to stay with the house.
14:24We're talking ceramic floor.
14:26You've got, yes, your copper range hood there
14:28are these beautiful handmade lights.
14:30This style continues throughout the whole home.
14:33Take a look downstairs.
14:36I'm going to check out this lawn.
14:37I know they have sectioned off the yard,
14:39which I think is really sensible,
14:40so I'll walk you around out there when you're done.
14:42Thank you.
14:43See soon.
14:48How amazing is that ceiling?
14:50This is cool.
14:51And the windows, it's beautiful.
14:53Look at that light fitting in the roof.
14:55And another amazing light fitting.
14:57All the mixed materials work so well.
15:00I think the main bed's this way.
15:01Main bed room's this way, yeah.
15:02Oh, it's got the ceilings flat through in here.
15:07Oh, there's an ensuite.
15:08Still in its original condition,
15:10even though look at the light fitting in there.
15:12Nice, good size.
15:13Feels like a little dark.
15:15That would be my only thing to say
15:17compared to having, like, obviously painted white walls,
15:20but still have this amazing window.
15:22The split-level living does make me a little bit nervous
15:24just with a toddler,
15:26particularly if we were to have another baby.
15:28Once they get on the move,
15:29you'd have to have eyes on them at all times,
15:30which probably might not work at this stage in our lives.
15:33That is one hesitation I do have about the house.
15:40Ah, hello.
15:41Oh, hello.
15:43Come on up.
15:44Come and join me.
15:46Didn't mean to scare you.
15:48Hiding up here.
15:49There's always something else.
15:51This house kind of unfolds.
15:53What a great space to sit and watch the kids run amok.
15:56Isn't it?
15:56And the block goes all the way to the street.
15:59Wow.
15:59So it's almost a quarter of an acre
16:00in the middle of Frankston South.
16:02And what you could do with this space,
16:03obviously it's wonderful to have this flat yard area
16:06for the kids.
16:07You could put in a pool, obviously,
16:08because the house is set to the back of the block.
16:10Got everything.
16:10Parents up here, kids running amok down there.
16:13Yes.
16:14Yeah, it's got a lot of potential
16:16for what you can do with your fam.
16:17Absolutely.
16:18And it's a really workable flat block too.
16:20Like some of the properties in Frankston South
16:21are quite steep.
16:23So this is amazing to have a block this size.
16:25It's reasonably flat still too.
16:27Let's take a crack at the price.
16:30I would say probably 1.5.
16:32Yeah.
16:33Would be my guess.
16:341.6, unfortunately.
16:36Look, this is the top end.
16:39They're looking around the twos.
16:41Yes.
16:42But it's somewhere that you wouldn't have to move
16:45again for a very long time.
16:46This would be the forever, forever home.
16:48The forever, forevers.
16:49Yes.
16:50Look, it's probably a little bit more expensive
16:51than what we were originally looking at
16:53in terms of the asking price.
16:54Not completely out of the question,
16:56but it probably would stretch us
16:57just that little bit further.
16:58Yeah, looking forward to going away,
17:00having a wine and having a discussion
17:01about, you know,
17:02where do we put in an offer
17:04and which one do we try and secure?
17:07Coming up.
17:08Shall we find out which one it was?
17:10We have made a decision.
17:16Many of us visit Frankston's beautiful beaches
17:21during the summer,
17:22but I wanted to chat with a local
17:24about what it's like to live here year-round.
17:28Well, Brendan, haven't you got yourself
17:29a cosy little corner of the world here in Frankston?
17:32We do, Shelley.
17:33It's fantastic.
17:34So what is life like for you and your family here now?
17:36Obviously a lot of hard work,
17:38keeping this place looking so great,
17:39and of course catering for all the amazing locals
17:41that you've got supporting you,
17:42but do you get any time off
17:44and what do you do with it?
17:44I do, I do, yeah.
17:45And what do I do with it?
17:46Rest, I guess.
17:47Try to keep fit.
17:48And both the kids work here as well,
17:50so that's handy.
17:51Yeah, we just enjoy it.
17:52Enjoy the place.
17:53What about the bay itself?
17:54Do you get out there much?
17:55I do get out there.
17:55I do enjoy the water.
17:56I do, for the most part,
17:58I look at the water.
17:59Once that view's framed by the windows,
18:01it just takes on a whole different feel.
18:02Great to hear you've got your kids
18:03working here with you.
18:05I'm at the moment house hunting
18:06for a young family.
18:08They're just moving down the bay
18:09towards Frankston.
18:10What would you say they can look forward to
18:13in their future life here?
18:14Oh, your house takes on a bit of a dual personality.
18:18It becomes a bit of a holiday house as well.
18:19But most people,
18:20they have to wait until they had a weekend
18:22or a holiday to go to the beach.
18:23We can do it every night in about five minutes,
18:25so it's great.
18:26Have you seen people now stop?
18:28Like, Frankston's become the destination.
18:30It used to be sort of the blow-through
18:31on the way down to Mornington,
18:32and now you've got so much going on here.
18:34Why don't they spend a day?
18:35We're actually getting residents
18:36from Mount Eliza and Mornington
18:38up towards Morty Allick,
18:40and yeah, just because of the location,
18:42it is a little bit unique.
18:44To sit so close to the water,
18:46particularly around this part of the bay,
18:47it's quite rare,
18:48so that's why we are getting quite a few people
18:51coming from out of town a bit.
18:52And obviously, East Link leads to Frankston,
18:54redevelopment of Frankston Station,
18:56all roads lead to Frankston.
18:58All roads lead to Frankston.
18:59They do.
19:00Best thing on Oliver's Corner's menu?
19:02The egg and bacon roll's pretty good.
19:03Yeah.
19:04Can't beat it, can you?
19:05No.
19:06And a few good beers too.
19:09Now that Dan and Shea have had a chance
19:11to consult with each other
19:12about the three homes we explored together,
19:15I'm keen to reconvene and see where things are at.
19:18Harvey, it's great to finally meet you.
19:21So did Mum and Dad tell you all about the houses
19:22that we checked out?
19:24There was a bit like a Goldilocks sort of story,
19:26wasn't there?
19:27There was one that might have been too big,
19:29one that might have been too small,
19:31and one that was just right.
19:33Shall we find out which one it was?
19:36We have made a decision.
19:37Have you?
19:38Well, don't tell me just yet.
19:39Okay.
19:39Let's talk through the houses first.
19:41Ready?
19:42Drum roll.
19:42Let's talk about house number one.
19:44Let's go.
19:45Okay.
19:46House number one.
19:46What did you think?
19:47I think house number one ticked pretty much
19:49most of the boxes in terms of space,
19:52four bedrooms, two bathrooms,
19:54big backyard for Harvey to play,
19:55potential for a pool,
19:57and within the budget.
19:57So it was very different, obviously,
19:59from apartment living that you have been in,
20:01and I can imagine, yes,
20:02it's getting small fast.
20:04Yes.
20:05House number two,
20:06there was some work to be done,
20:08but I could see Dan slowly falling in love.
20:10It had so much character,
20:12and it was, like, before him,
20:13it was something that you could see yourself living in,
20:16but then it probably just wasn't big enough
20:18at the end of the day
20:19and too much of a project to...
20:21Right.
20:22Okay, so we're ruling that one out straight away.
20:23Yeah.
20:24Too small.
20:25Well, let's talk about house number three.
20:26Once we were there,
20:28you could see the family growing,
20:29and you could still do some work to it if you wished,
20:32but it had such wonderful character.
20:33House number three was incredible.
20:36We loved just the...
20:38The character.
20:38...heakness of it, the character.
20:40The only thing about it
20:41is it's probably a bit too expensive for us,
20:43probably just a little bit outside of our budget.
20:44So we did get it right straight off the bat.
20:47Yeah, it was number one.
20:54Yeah, we could just move into it straight away.
20:56It didn't require any work
20:57because renovating with a toddler,
20:59it doesn't seem like an idea right now.
21:00Yeah, it's not a good idea.
21:02This is great news.
21:03We're off.
21:04Time for the big shift.
21:06Congratulations, and thank you.
21:07Thanks, Shelley.
21:08It was my absolute pleasure.
21:09I loved it.
21:10Yay!
21:11We're freezing out!
21:14Dan and Shea, congratulations,
21:19and all the best as you set out
21:21to create your perfect family home by the sea.
