00:03Wonder Woman is set to blaze into cinemas this weekend, giving audiences the chance to become
00:08better acquainted with the beloved female superhero who made her debut in Batman v Superman
00:14Dawn of Justice last year. But even though this will be the character's first solo feature,
00:19it's important to go in prepared. So here are the five things you need to know before seeing
00:24Wonder Woman. Star Gal Gadot first stole the show in Batman v Superman, so that has people
00:29wondering if Wonder Woman is a follow-up. The answer is no, it's actually a prequel of sorts,
00:35with a story taking place about a century beforehand as Wonder Woman enters man's world for the first
00:40time during World War I. But there are a few small nods to BVS in Wonder Woman. And BVS does tease
00:46events of Wonder Woman, sort of. The photo Batman sees of Wonder Woman alongside a group of men sets
00:52up essentially the heroes of this movie. But what happened to them after that picture was taken?
00:56Now, you might be thinking, wait a minute, how is Wonder Woman not aged at all in the hundred years
01:02between films? Girl looks good. What is her secret? And where can I buy her face cream?
01:07Well, I wish we could help you with that. But the reason for her prolonged youthful appearance?
01:11Well, she's an Amazon, a part of a race of superwomen who live on their own island, literally called
01:17Paradise Island, entirely separate from the male gender. Of course, Wonder Woman has a sidekick
01:22and love interest Steve Trevor, played by the ever-so-dreamy Chris Pine. Trevor is more than
01:28just eye candy, though. He is crucial in Wonder Woman's origin story, thanks to accidentally showing
01:33up on Paradise Island and spilling the beans on the happenings of the outside world.
01:38Wonder Woman isn't just an eagerly awaited blockbuster and the next entry in the DC
01:42extended universe. It's also the most expensive movie ever directed by a woman,
01:46with its $150 million budget eclipsing the $100 million budget of Catherine Bigelow's
01:52K-19, The Widowmaker. In The Hollywood Reporter's current cover story, director Patty Jenkins
01:57discusses the pressure she feels as a female director and how careful she is when it comes
02:02to taking on projects. But as she tells THR's Tatiana Siegel,
02:06I can't take on the history 50% of the population just because I'm a woman. I'm just trying to make
02:11the greatest version of Wonder Woman that I can for the people who love the character as much
02:15as I do and hope that the movie lives up to all the pressure that's on it. And her star
02:20definitely feels that she has succeeded. According to Godot, we are all used to having male
02:26protagonists in movies directed by men, but the way Patty has captured the Wonder Woman
02:31character. She is very relatable to everyone. As the review embargo broke Monday night,
02:36the movie crept towards a 96% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and the general consensus seemed
02:41to be that Wonder Woman was a fun, romantic, and enjoyable movie, perhaps even the best entry
02:47into the DC extended universe so far. Moreover, many critics felt that the movie had the added
02:52lark of great timing, tapping into the zeitgeist to push it beyond mere entertainment.
02:57Indeed, Wonder Woman is expected to chase away the doldrums at the
03:00early summer box office with a North American debut of $95 million or more,
03:06according to pre-release tracking. Head to THR.com for more from the Wonder Woman cover story
03:12and check out Graham McMillan's full rundown of more to know before seeing the film.
03:16In the meantime, how many times are you planning to see Wonder Woman this weekend?
