00:00You probably think every country has a capital, but there are actually two countries with no capital at all.
00:06At first, you might think of tiny countries such as Singapore, Vatican City, or Monaco.
00:11But the thing is, these countries are city-states, where the entire city is the country and the capital at the same time.
00:17But Nauru, a tiny island nation in the Pacific Ocean, three times smaller than Manhattan,
00:22is truly a country without a capital, simply because it doesn't have any cities.
00:26The whole country is divided into 14 districts, with about 12,000 people living in houses mostly along the coast.
00:33And the wild part is that Nauru used to be one of the richest countries in the world per capita, all because of bird poop.
00:40Over millions of years, it turned into phosphates, one of the most valuable resources,
00:45and exporting them is what made Nauru incredibly rich.
00:48But soon the resources ran out, and now Nauru survives mostly on aid from Australia.
00:53And the second country without a capital is truly surprising.
00:57It's located right in the heart of Europe, Switzerland.
01:00Switzerland is made up of 26 cantons that historically were almost like separate states,
01:05and strictly followed the principle of equality.
01:08To avoid giving any of them an advantage, the country chose not to name an official capital,
01:12and instead distributed its government functions across several cities.
01:15To avoid giving any of them an advantage, the country chose not to be a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country that was a country
