00:00Have you ever wondered why there is no bridge between Europe and Africa?
00:04The distance between Spain and Morocco is only 14 km, separated by the Strait of Gibraltar.
00:09This distance doesn't seem like a big deal, especially when compared to existing projects
00:13such as the 50 km long undersea channel tunnel between the UK and France, or the world's
00:19longest bridge, stretching 165 km in China.
00:23So why is there no connection between the two continents?
00:26The thing is that the Strait of Gibraltar is extremely deep, reaching up to 900 m and
00:31strong underwater currents make construction difficult.
00:34This depth also creates problems for a tunnel, as the seabed is made up of hard rock, making
00:39drilling challenging.
00:41To compare, the channel tunnel runs only about 75 m below sea level.
00:45Additionally, the region is highly seismically active, and possible earthquakes could pose
00:50a serious risk to the structure.
00:52So officially, all these factors make the construction of a bridge or tunnel extremely
00:56expensive, making the project economically unfeasible.
