๐ŸŒ Why isnโ€™t there a bridge or tunnel connecting Europe and Africa? ๐Ÿค” The distance between Spain and Morocco is only 14 kilometers, separated by the iconic Strait of Gibraltar. With incredible engineering feats like the 50-kilometer Channel Tunnel ๐Ÿš‡ between the UK and France ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท or Chinaโ€™s Danyangโ€“Kunshan Grand Bridge ๐ŸŒ‰ stretching an unbelievable 165 kilometers, you'd think a connection between Europe and Africa would be easy, right? So, why hasnโ€™t it been built? The thing is, the Strait of Gibraltar is super deep ๐ŸŒŠ up to 900 meters! Combine that with strong underwater currents ๐ŸŒช๏ธ and it becomes a huge challenge. Plus, the seabed is rock solid, making it tough to dig a tunnel. For comparison, the Channel Tunnel sits only 75 meters below sea level! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ And to make matters even trickier, the area is seismically active ๐ŸŒ‹, meaning earthquakes could be a serious risk for any structure built here. ๐Ÿ’ฅ These factors, along with the massive costs ๐Ÿ’ฐ, make the idea of a bridge or tunnel economically unfeasible... for now! ๐Ÿšง

00:00Have you ever wondered why there is no bridge between Europe and Africa?
00:04The distance between Spain and Morocco is only 14 km, separated by the Strait of Gibraltar.
00:09This distance doesn't seem like a big deal, especially when compared to existing projects
00:13such as the 50 km long undersea channel tunnel between the UK and France, or the world's
00:19longest bridge, stretching 165 km in China.
00:23So why is there no connection between the two continents?
00:26The thing is that the Strait of Gibraltar is extremely deep, reaching up to 900 m and
00:31strong underwater currents make construction difficult.
00:34This depth also creates problems for a tunnel, as the seabed is made up of hard rock, making
00:39drilling challenging.
00:41To compare, the channel tunnel runs only about 75 m below sea level.
00:45Additionally, the region is highly seismically active, and possible earthquakes could pose
00:50a serious risk to the structure.
00:52So officially, all these factors make the construction of a bridge or tunnel extremely
00:56expensive, making the project economically unfeasible.
