00:00Selena Gomez has revealed that she's not able to carry her own children.
00:06In her new Vanity Fair cover story, the actress shared,
00:09I haven't ever said this, but I unfortunately can't carry my own children.
00:13I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the babies in jeopardy.
00:17That was something I had to grieve for a while.
00:20Gomez was diagnosed with lupus in 2013 and later received a kidney transplant.
00:24Gomez has also publicly revealed that she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder,
00:28something she opened up about in her Apple TV Plus documentary, My Mind and Me.
00:32In a 2022 interview with Rolling Stone,
00:34Gomez had previously reflected on her desire to become a parent.
00:37She recalled crying in the car after visiting a friend who was trying to get pregnant,
00:41given she was taking two medications for her bipolar disorder
00:44that would make it unlikely that she'd be able to carry her own children.
00:47Despite her publicized health battles,
00:49the Only Murders in the Building star explained to Vanity Fair
00:52that she is open to the alternatives she can seek to becoming a mother,
00:55including adoption and surrogacy.
00:57She said of becoming a parent one day,
00:59it's not necessarily the way I envisioned it.
01:02I thought it would happen the way it happens for everyone,
01:04but I'm in a much better place with that.
01:06I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people
01:08willing to do surrogacy or adoption,
01:10which are both huge possibilities for me.
01:12Gomez continued,
01:12it made me really thankful for the other outlets for people
01:15who are dying to be moms.
01:16I'm one of those people.
01:18I'm excited for what that dream will look like,
01:20but it'll look a little different.
