00:00The son of one of the directors of Disney's original Snow White film is calling the live
00:04action remake starring Rachel Zegler insulting. The live action remake of the 1937 movie Snow
00:11White and the Seven Dwarfs doesn't come out until next year, but a culture war surrounding the film,
00:15simply titled Snow White, is already at full boil. First, conservative critics took issue
00:20with the casting of Latina star Zegler as a character described in the original Brothers
00:24Grimm story as having skin as white as snow, as well as the production changing the seven
00:29dwarfs into a diverse collection of magical creatures of varying sizes. Then, an interview
00:33Zegler did at Disney's D23 Expo in September of last year recently resurfaced and caused a major
00:39stir online. While speaking to Variety, the 22-year-old actress suggested that the new movie
00:44would take a very different approach to the iconic character. She's not going to be saved by the
00:48prince and she's not going to be dreaming about true love. She's dreaming about becoming the leader
00:53she knows she can be. Since those nearly a year-old comments went viral, the internet has also
00:57resurfaced other old interviews with Zegler, like this one where she shared similar thoughts on the
01:01original 1937 film with Extra. There's a big focus on her love story with a guy who literally stalks
01:09her. Weird, weird. So we didn't do that this time. Now, David Hand, whose father, also named David
01:16Hand, was one of the directors of the original film, is sharing his thoughts on the live-action remake in a
01:21new interview with The Telegraph. The 91-year-old, who also worked as a designer for Disney in the
01:251990s, said,
01:27It's a whole different concept and I just totally disagree with it. And I know my dad and Walt would
01:31also very much disagree with it. Hand went on to call the film a disgrace and say of Disney,
01:36Their thoughts are just so radical now. They're making up new woke things and I'm just not into
01:40any of that. I find it quite frankly a bit insulting what they may have done with some of these classic
01:45films. He continued,
01:47There's no respect for what Disney did and what my dad did. I think Walt and he would be turning in
01:51their graves. Disney has not responded to the controversy and did not have a comment about
01:55this latest turn. Snow White, starring Zegler and Gal Gadot as the evil queen, which has not yet
02:00been seen by anyone outside the studio, even in trailer form, has completed filming and is slated
02:05to open March 22, 2024. For more on this story, go to THR.com. This is The Hollywood Reporter News.
