00:00welcome to another episode of five aside on being sports happy happy Thanksgiving today we're going
00:23to be talking about some memories that we're most thankful for African players who have scored some
00:27goals for their national teams African players who have scored some goals for their club teams
00:31and of course we have to get into the fact that a player has won the calf player of the year but
00:37first I have a question for you guys what memory first comes to mind when you guys think of what
00:42you're thankful for in regards to African football history for national teams I'll start off I know
00:49it's recency bias but the fact that Morocco is able to be the first ever African nation to make it to
00:55the World Cup semi-final I mean that's the definition of trailblazing and seeing all their recent success
01:01we've talked about now the U20 World Cup the infrastructure them hosting AFCON it looks like
01:05they're one of their true world powerhouses I just think that's an incredible moment and you can see
01:10that that moment is turning into a movement so I'm gonna have to go with that yeah and just to double
01:14down on that even further I think it was the path that Morocco had in the knockout stages that like
01:19emphasizes the African pride so obviously like the beating both teams on the Iberian Peninsula
01:26and I'm saying this and I'm Spanish that tells you how important it is getting past Spain getting past
01:30Portugal despite all the country that those three countries have with each other and then ultimately
01:35facing France and although they lost like played in phenomenal match against everyone that they can be
01:40very proud of but for me I it takes me back to the 2010 World Cup South Africa being the host country
01:47and just the vibe that that entire world cup had like like that was the first representation for me
01:53seeing a world cup um in a way that like celebrated African culture that wasn't like
01:58didn't feel forced and there was nothing negative and weird and like low bar it felt like just as high
02:04quality there's no like weird conspiracies or like controversies that were coming out about it
02:09it was just a great time beautiful time yeah and like even all the South African gold celebrations
02:13and the dances that they had together and whatnot it was just a good time I'm Spanish we won that
02:19world cup I'm adding that right there we won the one world cup in Africa y'all tu sabes give me that
02:24too come on who was that this forever I'm thankful about the songs the songs that's the best that's
02:29low-key peak like football the soundtrack you know what I mean yeah yeah amazing for sure I mean
02:34I would definitely bring it back home I would definitely say Ghana 2010 we had a great run the you know
02:39longest run an African team has ever gone in the world cup and that was only what our second world cup
02:44appearance and you should have gone to the semis you know what I mean we gotta talk about it though
02:48bringing it back to AFCON we've won AFCON four times first time in 63 we gained our independence in 57
02:54mm-hmm so we get it done quick man we start hot definitely bro start very very hot
02:59definitely start hot get it done it's cool to see that obviously African football is also time for different you know national teams to express themselves from Cassie Flavor you know what I mean
03:08go tank bowling football a lot of streetball vibes in there too so that's something I always love to see
03:13for sure I think for me as a Cameroonian recency bias as well but that memory from the 2022 Qatar World Cup
03:20when Cameroon beat Brazil
03:27he might be the funniest player on the planet uncle uncle of boobs
03:33basically what happens is he we're is one one against Brazil in the world
03:38world cup and he has the composure to chip the goalkeeper yeah against Brazil in a world cup
03:44takes off his shirt celebrates does the abubakar celebration gets a second yellow card gets sent
03:49off handshakes the referee referee smiles at him laughs at him we go on to win the game 2-1
03:55yes we didn't leave the tournament but uh we beat Brazil yeah so I'm I'm incredibly grateful for that
03:59incredible it's a good one um anyway speaking of players and goals in Africa I have to ask you guys the
04:05same question but this time African players for club maybe it's players for Chelsea players in the
04:11Prem players for Napoli yeah what African player performed so well that today and on Thanksgiving
04:17day you guys are sitting here and telling me I'm thankful for that as well I have to go with I know
04:22it's a lot of recency bias but I also think it is important to live in the moment Adam Mola
04:26Lukman's hat trick in the Europa League final 3-0 over Bayer Leverkusen who was on pace for an
04:33undefeated treble season having the best season in that club's history to absolutely we talk about
04:40Thanksgiving parties we'll talk about spoiling a party just completely torch them one of the best
04:45individual performances I've seen and thinking about how good that Bayer Leverkusen team was not
04:50just individually but as a collective and what he brought to that city I got to give it to
04:54Luckman in that recent performance yeah I mean for me obviously being a Chelsea fan I have to go
05:00back to the Drogba era kind of just like 2009 through like 2012 2013 2014 but not just Drogba but all the
05:09like African and African diaspora cast that made up that Chelsea's like that time in Chelsea's history
05:15so like Drogba, Essien, Jono B. Bikel, Kalu, Kalu, the list goes on, Makalele, Anelka, Malouda like the
05:26the list goes on and then obviously it makes room for like the likes of Conte that we see today yeah
05:31so it's just beautiful to see that level of success in a league like the Premier League
05:36Hurts to say as a United fan but you know respect to Liverpool within the last decade they've had two
05:43African winners that have gone crazy there's a point in time nobody could touch Mane Salah yeah you
05:48know so that was really cool to see um yeah like I said it hurts to say that might be the greatest
05:54African pairing of all time uh I would struggle to find a better one up top in Europe in Europe
06:02probably a lot and Mane up top to win a modern UCL to win modern every trophy in club football they
06:08went all six yeah I ain't mad at it Mane was unplayable Salah's left foot was dangerous
06:13there I can't think of a better one one that comes to mind actually that I am thankful for
06:20is uh there was a time when AS Roma had Gervinho and Dumbia up top that was fun we'll never forget
06:26that it was a lot of fun yeah a lot of pace that was that was a lot of fun um what did you say
06:33I said I'll never forget that headband thankful for that here for sure um no but I think a player
06:41I'm very much thankful for that played for a club back to Italy is Kevin Prince Boateng for AC Milan
06:46yeah um cultural figure cultural icon um Ghanaian icon had the ability to represent Germany chose to
06:53represent Ghana um I think my favorite memory with him is when AC Milan won the the Serie on 2012 and he
07:01hits the moonwalk on the stage in front of us sold out Sun Siro I think there hasn't been a player
07:07like him for quite some time Pogba I think maybe picked up the mantle of someone with that level
07:13of flair that level of just kind of bursts of raw talent that you cannot even see coming um so I'm
07:19really really thankful that I got to see a little bit of Kevin Prince at AC Milan one quick thing I do
07:23want to add like specifically about that Chelsea era like there's one video I've I specifically have in
07:28mind that I always remember um it was the the club was interviewing Michael Lele like post training
07:35and basically like Drogba SC and a bunch of other players like come around and they're kind of teasing
07:40Michael Lele because his English isn't really the best and so they keep asking him to like answer
07:45questions in England and like Michael Lele is kind of being shy he's like no no no like I don't have
07:49anything else to anything else to say anything else to say and it just kind of highlights also the
07:53diasporic like beauty of like playing in England and like the fact that like although Michael Lele is
07:59like new to England and like trying to learn how to speak English and whatnot like he has players
08:04who also are Francophone yeah so we also see that element the familial element of it at these clubs too
08:11speaking of family we have to get into the CAF player of the year the person who is the biggest and
08:16most applauded person in this Africa family of football players Hakimi has taken the African player of the year
08:24deserved thoughts do you think uh I mean in comparison to previous years how do you guys
08:29feel about Hakimi winning it over Osman winning it over Salah hey man listen I will say Hakimi any
08:35team he's played on he's improved greatly because that's probably one of if not the best two-way player
08:40we have in the game a wing back that can score goals dribble past somebody and someone that also keep
08:46up with your best uh offender yeah I mean he won the treble he won PSG's first UCL
08:53he not only was good on the wing but he would actually come centrally a lot for PSG and control
08:58the midfield which is an underrated talent for him and shout out coach Luis Enrique seeing that ability
09:02he was scoring clutch goals from the top of the box believe he scored in the UCL final as well
09:06he deserved it he won everything what more can you do than win everything and be arguably the best player
09:10on your team yeah Mike most decorated player right now um has the support of really like everybody
09:18like he's really like one of the people's favorites like he's not the type of player that seems like
09:22he's like egging on players or being like adversarial like he literally just plays the game plays it well
09:28and gets things done and so like everybody likes him to bring that up too i think it's very heartwarming
09:33to see how a lot of attackers that play on his side end up having a bromance with him yeah see Mbappé
09:40see Sancho those are key players that you know obviously operate on the same wing and then his
09:44composure for morocco in the world cup and the penalties facts it's a leader final he's a leader
09:50he knows how to have fun but he also knows how to get it done but to wrap things up we have a little
09:54bit of drama just to close out our thanksgiving talk today Ethan Mbappé is rumored to be making
09:59a decision that might be a little different from his big brother a bit of a thanksgiving issue for
10:04the Mbappé family because it looks like Ethan is debating between playing for Cameroon and Algeria
10:09what are the storylines behind that do you think that it will cause a little bit of tension in the
10:13Mbappé camp if he goes on to play for another national team should he wait and play for France
10:18or should he play for his father or mother's country every situation is different for sure
10:22um as your hotline definitely could bring up you know the cultural um reality of their home but
10:30we've seen some great examples of players who play for different teams one being a European team one
10:34being an African nation and they both succeed in different ways yeah you know Kevin Prince Boateng
10:38you know um it's cool to see that when they're on the pitch you know because his love is still there
10:42yeah but what do y'all think and honestly you said with Cameroon and Algeria Algeria and Mbappé has
10:48some history with Cameroon it's true so what does that mean have we moved past that and i think
10:52if he did go with Algeria it wouldn't be genuine because like yeah i'm an older brother i have i have
10:58a little brother my little brother definitely tries to be as like adversarial and like controversial as
11:05he can sometimes even when he wants to do the same thing as me he'll be like i'm gonna do something
11:09different and so i think um even though Ethan looks up to his big brothers in a lot of ways like he even
11:14talked about how Mbappé's celebration came from him true um and like they you know they share a lot of
11:19that brotherly love i do think for him like carving his own path making history with a team like
11:25Algeria would be a great way to kind of cement his own legacy instead of trying to live up to his
11:29brother's expectations the current player he's at now he there's no way he can live up to killian
11:34yep but you're creating your own your own narrative and your own story in Algeria now you can create
11:38a really special story playing with mar is right yeah yeah jerky need to switch over too too late for
11:44that one there's a few there's a few french boys yeah thanksgiving drama definitely this has been
11:51father side on being sports happy thanksgiving we will see you guys next week
