00:00Kerala's hill district of Idukki witnessed moments of shock and high drama on Friday.
00:22At a private sky dining facility in Anachal, near Munnar, five people, four of them tourists,
00:29were left dangling nearly 120 feet above the ground after the crane holding their dining platform
00:36suffered a sudden technical failure. What began as an adventure turned into sheer panic.
00:42The guests had been enjoying a sky dining experience, an attraction introduced only a
00:47few months ago. Up to 16 visitors can be seated at a time, lifted high above the valley to enjoy
00:53a half-hour meal with sweeping views of Munnar's hills. But today, everything went wrong.
00:59According to operators, the crane's hydraulic system suddenly stopped working, freezing the
01:05platform mid-air. They say they were unable to lower it manually. For the next one and a half
01:10hours, the tourists remained suspended, scared, confused and completely unsure of what would
01:16happen next. Meanwhile, people on the ground watched anxiously as the platform swayed gently
01:21in the wind with no clarity on whether the crane would hold. Calls for help were made immediately.
01:27Fire and rescue services from Munnar rushed to the scene. Teams assessed the crane structure,
01:33examined possible lowering mechanisms and coordinated with operators to ensure a safe rescue.
01:39Iduki district collector, Dineshan Cheruvata, also arrived, assuring the media that the trapped
01:45visitors would be brought down soon. As the tense operation unfolded, officials worked out a plan to
01:51stabilize the platform and bring everyone down safely, using supportive equipment and controlled
01:56maneuvering around the crane's failed hydraulics. After more than an hour in the air, the ordeal
02:02finally ended. All five individuals were successfully rescued and no injuries were reported.
02:08The facility, run by Southern Skies Aerodynamics, an adventure tourism company recently launched in
02:14Anachal, had promised a new thrill for visitors to the hill station. Today's incident, however,
02:21raises serious questions about safety checks, emergency procedures and the structural reliability
02:26of such high-altitude adventure setups. For now, officials are expected to review whether proper
02:32maintenance protocols were followed and whether similar tourist experiences require stricter
02:37regulations in the future.
