01:46we left here fro it was rainy gray and cold and we got on a plane 14 hours later it's just like boom here
02:00you are
02:07i don't think i've realized how upscale and how big it is absolutely mental it was amazing i think that was
02:14our first taste where we went okay we can see what we're getting ourselves into there are about 200
02:22million fans worldwide and the industry is estimated to be worth five billion dollars
02:31i think we'll be on a growth trail i think for the next seven eight years hopefully more so
02:36it was mind-blowing the vocals were flawless the dance moves were precise the performance was just
02:52incredible it sort of set the buyer very very high standard
02:59we went backstage to get some tips from some of the k-pop idols who had performed starting with the
03:04incredible prize we'll do our official greeting cool how did you come up with rise as your name our name
03:20is kind of like a combination of the words rise and realize and kind of have like a team bottle sort of
03:29like to rise and realize our dreams in a way cool nice yeah it was cool
03:38and then the legendary 10 from waving came to see us so what was your first experience performing at
03:44like sm town i'm very nervous at first and then with a year after i debuted i become more like comfortable
03:52like on stage so it gets like easier as you go on yes you learn the tips and the tricks after like you
03:58perform like one after another so i feel like you learn along the way yeah definitely one of the most
04:10full-scale concerts i've seen in a while
04:12i'll put it next uh taylor sweat huge huge it was amazing
04:29as we came out we met some fans even though you know we didn't even know it was possible to have
04:34fans before we'd even really started
04:40made i'd say probably all five of us very happy
04:46that was amazing we've met some of our first fans what can we say
04:49on the drive to the house we actually got to uh see soul on the way through it was like something
05:02out of a batman movie
05:09the lights were just insane there's so much life in the city it's amazing but it was also
05:15quite daunting because i haven't actually lived this far away from home before during the time
05:21in korea the boys will be living together in the fashionable soul district of ittawan
05:28okay here we go oh my look in the kitchen yo oh my god yo wow i think i know which room i want already
05:39oh my god the house is so sick downstairs we've got like games room mirrors so we can practice our
05:48dances i'm on the next level hi i'm dexter i'm 22 i've been a performer ever since i was a little
05:58kid and i've been dreaming about doing something like this that's super cute room so i want this one
06:04i can't lie i would say i'm an attention seeker but when i'm performing i definitely want everyone
06:08to look at me yeah i mean who doesn't love loads of people applauding you
06:15it's just fun
06:19ah do you remember this one i was just so proud of you this is how i'd like you to dress all the time
06:26i love the like tank top with the smart trousers
06:29last time in south korea i'll probably miss my mum the most i see her every day in london you
06:33know i live with her spending my time with her so it'll definitely be hard but it's worth it
06:41let me show you what is that wait is that actually someone at the door just looking around the house
06:46and the doorbell rang a lovely lady arrived called joy our translator and she was going to tell us what
06:52was going to be happening over the next 100 days every week you guys are going to prepare a performance
06:56different performance every week and you guys will be evaluated by heejun the head of training
07:01and every trainee goes through her but i do have to let you know that it's not guaranteed that
07:07everyone's going to be there at the end of the program not everybody makes it through the program
07:12yeah wait we're not going to make it because this is going to be cut well i can't really say much
07:20because he's just going to be in charge of evaluating you guys you guys are going to meet her at the end
07:24of the week for your first evaluation what she said about not all of us will make it i'm not feeling
07:31too great wait one of us one of us we're not all we're not going to be one of us we could all be
07:36calm blaze definitely took the news the hardest but that is the business at the end of the day you
07:40know if you if you can't keep up you get cut and that's that's how the industry works indeed it does
07:45the first thing any boy band needs is a sound can you feel the vibes i'm checking how i'm speaking of
07:52sm entertainment believe this song will work for them speaking body language we both understand can
07:58you feel the vibes and this is the choreography they'll be learning to accompany the song
08:09okay let's go
08:14k-pop is technically difficult as the choreography needs to be in perfect unison teaching them the
08:20skills to achieve this is sunshine park
08:28absolutely honestly i'm i am slow at picking up choreo and channel done
08:37i'm james i'm 23. i'm from huddersfield in the uk around sheep and cows let me try that one again
08:44let me run that one around i have a twin brother called lewis we post dance videos online and we
08:50create our own dance trends i think standing now on our main page we have 5.6 million followers
08:59this opportunity is huge i want to learn that's what i want to do i want to learn i want to soak up
09:04everything i can for me dance it's my main discipline which means i can really really appreciate the
09:15sort of intricacies of the movement five and six and seven and eight i'm not super good at picking up
09:26dance i come from all like a singing modeling background one more time sorry
09:33yeah you got it you got it okay yeah um we'll see step and slide off roll and roll kick
09:46right from the start i found the choreo tough free styling is my forte because i struggle to follow
09:51direction i'm very do things on my own kind of a guy i felt a little bit bad for our choreographer
10:08on the first training day i don't think he really worked with a group of boys like us before
10:13our coordination wasn't wasn't great it's about looking like a team and looking the same because
10:18we all have a bit different flavors it's definitely hard um i'm gonna have to put in the work but
10:23yeah it's fun hi i'm ollie i'm 20 years old and i'm from sunderland i went to school in derring
10:31cathedral so i sung in the choir there i've always grown up with just my mom my nana my granddad
10:37look after yourself right now i know that this is your dream yeah you know you'll work hard i think
10:43performing was passed on to me from my mom she used to do a lot of modeling when she was younger and
10:47dancing and you know that we both gotta miss you like soul mother everything all of her acted in
10:54sang danced i was all i'm not bragging but he's good lucky you know and i'm so proud of you always

11:12go out and about around soul to experience the unique world of k-pop culture

12:10psy in 2012 first you know just like the statue and then go hey hey there you go
12:24also in the gangnam district is soul's answer to the hollywood walk of fame the wall of hands
12:34since you guys are here we can maybe make a wish i wish that we get our hands on one of these walls
12:42yeah how about that i can see it you see that gap just there let's go three two one here we are okay
12:50now let's go to another spot
12:54in korea photo booths are a cultural phenomenon fueled by k-pop that works that works yeah that works
13:01fans have limited opportunities to take photos with k-pop idols
13:09so photo booths are the only way to get a snap with their favorite stuff
13:15everywhere you look in the soul there are these photo booths the people here love them it's like a
13:19massive social thing it's a trend worth millions and thousands of booths have opened across south korea
13:25in the last 10 years across town in young goo is hiker an interactive experience that allows fans to make
13:36their own k-pop videos i'm gonna make you guys do a dance challenge video you're gonna come up with

15:11okay guys i have to say that was very impressive i love the dances i'm gonna
15:39raise your hand the winner for this dance challenge is
15:50i'm a very competitive person so winning a dance challenge in the first week as a cleanup
15:54crew was a very nice thing to happen i feel like it was deserved i was gutted i was i was absolutely
16:00gutted yeah
16:05but the boys break from training is short-lived over the next few days their rehearsals become even more
16:12intense
16:17being a trainee is basically a full-time job and the only time you're not training is when you're sleeping
16:23i have never been so tired in my life this was absolutely relentless
16:31drop it
16:33but despite their hard work they're still struggling to crack the choreo
16:38the only you go on to get to liquor step step
16:49no no no
16:51god you go kick step step to count to the one and two that's the count one and two one
16:58and two okay well that's right that's right as ollie struggles in the dance studio reese is struggling in
17:06the vocal room with coach woo minjun
17:09wave of the energy when we go on in together is the way we move and the night is lean
17:17and lean
17:18yeah
17:19yeah
17:19but when you're singing the face you're singing the voice you're singing the voice
17:24yeah
17:25but this is
17:26can you feel the voice
17:28this is not a song
17:30just
17:30can you feel the voice
17:32yeah
17:32this is
17:33yeah
17:34you see your face
17:36you see your face
17:37you think it's a 10.1

17:48you look
17:49you can be so cute
17:51but I'm like, I'm supposed to call it that way
17:53it's not a mess
17:55you think I have a funny smile
17:57okay okay
17:58so
18:00I don't know, but I don't know what to do.
18:02Don't be yourself as a musician.
18:04See, you're shy right now.
18:06Wave of the energy when we go all in.
18:10Smile, smile.
18:12Wave of the energy when we go all in.
18:15It feels different, yeah.
18:19I became a performer from the age of four or five.
18:22Oh, look at you there, Rhys.
18:24Oh, I look actually quite cool there.
18:26I wouldn't go that far.
18:28When I perform, I feel like I can properly be me.
18:34Throughout my school life, I've always had a little bit of,
18:37you know, the haters' comments or it made me carry on
18:40and keep pushing to get where I want to be today.
18:44I've been a cruise ship dancer for the last eight months,
18:47but a boy band's always been a dream of mine.
18:50Wave of the energy when we go all in.
18:53K-pop is one of the biggest industries now in the world.
18:56The fame, the lifestyle is, you know, crazy good.
19:01So for us, you know, five lads coming out of college
19:03into this extraordinary experience is, you know,
19:06once in a lifetime and it is amazing.
19:08With just days to go until their evaluation,
19:23the band are still failing to dance in unison.
19:26All right, yeah, bye-bye.
19:28It's OK.
19:29Oh, my God!
19:34Is it bad?
19:38Does that mean very bad?
19:43Yeah.
19:49I feel a little bit stressed.
19:51It's not like perfect and perfectly down,
19:53still making stupid mistakes.
19:55Eight and one and two, and one and two.
19:59OK.
20:00Synchronization can be very challenging.
20:02Good communication is really crucial,
20:04and you really need to remember
20:06that you're working as a part of a team,
20:09and that just comes from experience
20:11and practicing together.
20:14After a tough few days of training,
20:16the boys are being given a night off
20:18to have a night in.
20:19Hello!
20:20With Shindong from K-pop group Super Junior.
20:23He's been performing at the very top for 20 years.
20:33And tonight, he's given these new trainees
20:35a lesson in Korean culture.
20:37So, I'm going to do Korean food.
20:43Do you know Macaulay?
20:45Macaulay is a rice wine
20:46that's traditionally drunk
20:47alongside a main meal.
20:48I love it.
20:49More you get.
20:50Oh, what?
20:51It's definitely one shot.
20:52Oh, it's good.
20:53Oh, it's good.
20:54It's good.
20:55I'm watching a kid.
20:57If someone has a kid,
20:59they're going to turn the head off.
21:01Oh, another trip.
21:08Oh, another trip.
21:11This game is Ba-Ni Ba-Ni.
21:13OK?
21:14All together.
21:15Hi-Ni Ba-Ni!
21:16Oh, yeah!
21:24Yes!
21:25Yeah!
21:28Yes!
21:30Big 7 ν•΄.
21:44Grab your heads, grab your heads.
21:46Grab your heads.
21:50You know the rules.
21:51Now what are you thinking?
21:53Oh buddy buddy.
22:00With just two days to go until the Hee-jun evaluation, choreographer Sung Kwon Kim has been drafted in to help them crack synchronization.
22:19All right, look at each other, go in a circle, facing each other, yeah.
22:36We're one team, right?
22:38We're one team, right?
22:40More like me, my cara, around side, side, side, right?
22:44I'll find out for you to find yourself something different.
22:47Let's go, my day up.
22:50I'm going to tell you the best of basic beginner's activity.
22:55Here, here, here.
23:01Oliver is ...
23:03Wait, wait.
23:05Remember, wait, wait.
23:08very simple casual yeah I did feel like I was holding the
23:18boys up a little bit in the first week there are such really good anses and I
23:22just wasn't not that standard but I really wanted to be so I knew I had to
23:26find a lot work while Oli drills down on the details blaze has been called into
23:34vocal training every time you move a little closer to me running through your body like electricity
23:39it's in the air but everywhere getting to the feet can you feel the vibe i'm blaze and i am 19.
23:48i first started performing when i was about seven you look very serious
23:53yeah i was very serious my mom will always say i was really talented at a young age i don't think
24:00i was i could not sing when i was younger i could not dance either i auditioned for the brit school
24:06i went there from age 14 to 18 and i loved like every second of it
24:15this is my dream to be performing on on massive stages in front of massive audiences i'm expecting
24:21a lot of long hours from the trailing the standards are going to be like very very high um which is
24:28slightly daunting but very exciting when you know you got it you know you know it's not
24:34not an open source or else on it gets you know that i'm gonna show you a little
24:38and you're supposed to be excited about that blaze is quite a low speaking voice so i'd say he's more
24:42of a bariton but the k-pop songs have quite a high vocal can you feel the vibes can can you feel the
24:55of five okay
25:03with some band members struggling with the different aspects of k-pop training wellness coach genie chang
25:08has been brought in to help them cope with the daily emotional and mental challenges hello hello hi
25:14guys so excited to meet you i'm here to check up on you guys yes just just to make sure you're doing
25:21good you know so how was your first week how's it been um it's been really good it's been very
25:27intense and you say that with a smile yeah well okay no it's been in a good way because i mean we're
25:31we're training with like the best people it's a little mind-blowing training in sm they're working
25:37with like the biggest names in k-pop and i'm like oh wow like yeah it's kind of crazy okay it's also like
25:43they ask us what our favorite like k-pop oh of course they're gonna ask that we say something
25:47and they're like oh yeah they're my student it's just like so casual so who is your favorite i'm just
25:52curious i i i like s well i mean i'm looking forward to seeing how good we get and like what sm are
26:02going to create us into yeah we're already really good but just becoming that like so slick and sick
26:09how are you guys getting along yeah good i think we've all become really close because of how
26:14intense the training has been of course we're all going to have to have each of us back because
26:18sometimes like for me example like i'm not getting a move and i'm a little slower at choreo
26:24and these boys are like you're right man oh to me that's really important because you guys have to
26:28lean on each other you know that's the whole k-pop thing the group mentality on that note i guess i want
26:34to know do you guys know each other's strengths or your favorite things about each other
26:38reese he's got the most amazing voice you are such a handsome man he goes about life as if he's in a
26:44photo shoot let's talk about blaze he's a little quieter here blaze i'd say is our little dancer um from day
26:55one the little's just unnecessary just calling me a dancer is nice you know i like the way he scratches his
27:01hair okay is that gonna be the signature look yeah look at that wow yeah okay let's talk about
27:08james james is very mature and he's also a very very kind person and an amazing dancer yeah what do you
27:15enjoy about me what do you enjoy about him oh he's got the best laugh you've got a really beautiful sun
27:20shiny energy about you dexter thank you james so but that's great so he radiates he has a great laugh
27:26okay that's awesome let's go to ollie ollie tries hard always um
27:33so i was gonna go on to say yeah go on he doesn't call himself a dancer you don't call yourself a
27:39dancer he doesn't no no no uh you know i've danced for a long time but i just don't have the connection
27:45in my body i'll just say i admire how he's not afraid to put himself out of his comfort zone yeah
27:49yeah like if that was me i would be very uncomfortable i'll be i'll be stressing
27:55okay so you have your assessment okay yeah so what's that going to be like feeling the pressure
28:01a little bit it's not easy to take criticism right or like feet like that feedback of like
28:05this isn't good i'm not intimidated i think we will be nervous when we actually i mean i think
28:09that's normal we'll get real once we walk in evaluation is just a day away
28:26this is the last chance for the routine to be perfected with vocal coach jinyoung jen
28:32and everything appears to be in tune
28:39speaking body language however
28:44oh can you feel feel blaze the
28:48zoom that's what i'm feeling when i'm feeling when i'm feeling a little bit more
28:50can you feel the
28:51can you feel the
28:55first one was bad
28:57can you feel the
28:59looking towards tomorrow with performances we just need clean up vocals clean up dancing
29:04there's a little bit of a disconnect between the two i'd say at the moment
29:08we'll just get better let's just get better
29:13you wouldn't think we're singers that's for sure we're a unit of five and so if anyone's struggling
29:17with one thing we're all struggling with that one thing
29:19every time you move a little move move a little
29:23tomorrow is going to be intense we finally just got to go in there and give everything we've got
29:28one week into their 100 day training regime and it all comes down to this yeah you nervous um
29:39a little bit boys it's good to be nervous there's definitely some nerves and some
29:44a lot of thinking of what ifs and everything obviously everyone is a little bit nervous but i think
29:48i'm a little bit intimidated i'm a little bit like no i think it'll be all right yeah we're gonna
29:53need it look all we can do is try our very best put our all into it whatever we leave in that room is
29:58left in that room that's that
30:04i just want to get it done now yeah man the anticipation is killing me
30:08i know you're nervous yeah you're doing your your vocal warm-ups and me i mean you're pacing mate no
30:17i'm not no no no no i'm not i'm not nervous i'm excited i'm excited i'm not really that worried
30:27i think i'm pretty confident in all of our abilities
30:30heejun yoon has more than 20 years experience creating and nurturing some of k-pop's biggest stars
30:44she has unbelievably high standards and any who fail to meet them risk being cut from training
31:00is
31:27I'm with you, I feel it in my soul, yeah, you know what we gotta do, you gotta have a room so bright, gotta put on shades, baby come along, watch me take it away, somebody turn up louder, to get down for an hour, just you and me out on the floor, let's go a little longer.
31:56We're sitting stronger, and stronger, and stronger, can you feel the vibe, every time you move a little closer to me, running through your body like electricity, we're sitting here and everywhere getting to me, can you feel the vibe, I'm shaking and we're sticking and it's making me nice, so come on over, come in closer, give me a hand, speak in body language so you won't understand, can you feel the vibe,
32:22Can you feel the vibe, can you feel the wave of the energy when we all walk in, together with the way we move when the night is lean, lean.
32:40Somebody turn up louder, need to get down for an hour, just you and me out on the floor, let's go a little longer, it's hitting stronger, it's stronger, it's stronger, can you feel the vibe, every time you move a little closer to me, running through your body like electricity, we're sitting here and everywhere getting into the scene,
33:10can you feel the vibe, can you feel the vibe, can you feel the vibe, can you feel the vibe, every time you move a little closer to me, running through your body like electricity,
33:40I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I'm shaking and I
35:58I don't think it's going to happen.
36:02What kind of confidence? Why do you think it's going to happen?
36:07The passion.
36:13In this situation, the dance is the highest.
36:19I want to show you the passion.
36:27In my opinion, I can't understand the situation.
36:32I have to do the hard work, but I have to do the hard work.
36:38But I have to do the hard work, but I have to do the hard work.
36:50I don't have to do the hard work, but I don't have to do the hard work.
37:02And when you're playing this dance, it's not a dance.
37:06It's just the kids who are doing the hard work.
37:09I've never heard of this dance.
37:14I've never heard of this dance.
37:21I think it's too close to this.
37:23If you're watching this scene,
37:25if you're watching this scene,
37:27if you're watching this scene,
37:31it's better to see this scene.
37:35You understand?
37:37Yeah.
37:38Yeah.
37:39Yeah.
37:40Yeah.
37:41You're not a camera.
37:42No camera.
37:43He-jun has called an emergency meeting with the management team.
38:06that was horrifically negative yeah I think I was basic little Korea that was basic level here in
38:21Korea I can only speak for myself but that like got kind of real the all-round feedback for us
38:29was that we were terrible we got ripped into in there we expected something like this just not
38:37this brutal I think we've all worked hard this week I've seen us all working hard I think if anyone took
38:45it harder than anyone today it would probably be be blaze the standard here is you think the top
38:55standard in the UK what that is imagine that times like a thousand we can walk away from this
39:02just knowing the standard knowing how hard we have to work now I don't know what to think of like what
39:08she said to me well that was the best thing around the best answer because I don't agree so it's like
39:15hmm I genuinely wasn't expecting that today mainly because like through college like in my training
39:23I've always kind of been that guy in the back I was never you know that front-center guy that they
39:29loved and they thought was amazing don't put yourself down about it in this situation she said that you
39:35were the best in both aspects in k-pop I've got very different ideas of a performer and an artist
39:44then what is idolized here from that we can all gauge what yeah what what it means yeah what she's
39:53looking for in a k-pop idol I'm pretty confident my perception of performance and abilities and I know
40:01that at heart I'm my own artist should we go back to what she said she said what she says we need to
40:09even if you don't agree like what she says is fact we're in her territory oh she hates us oh no
40:14it 50 minutes later dawn and rust from management return wow wow yeah yeah yeah well how did you think it
40:33went bad idea yeah I think that's been a reality check yeah it was hard we've got to go away
40:43re-evaluate everything the ultimate goal here is to impress region and one of her notes back to
40:52us was I didn't go so hard because I didn't want to make them cry I blaze um look she doesn't feel
41:02that you've listened enough to her today she's so important that when when you are asked or told
41:08something to do you really take it on board we're not going to sugarcoat anything because there's a lot
41:15at stake there's a lot at stake here mediocrity doesn't cut it unless you're the best they will put
41:25the name to you you you have to try harder harder harder next time there's a change that you don't know
41:36if you're not going to be on board I'm going to be in the middle of the world I'm going to the end of the world
41:42you don't want to play it it's like it's contagious my biggest security is that I'm not wanted here
41:48For me, this is terrifying.
41:50500 school kids, eyes on me.
41:54What have you got, bro? Is it tonsilitis?
41:56It's like contagious.
41:58My big insecurity is that I'm not wanted here.
42:01I'm not wanting to hear it.
42:03I don't think that's right.
42:05I don't think that's right.
42:07If I go like this, I don't have to do this here.
42:18You're ready?
42:25I don't think that's right.
42:27I'm not wanting to hear it.
42:31I'm not wanting to hear it.
42:35I'm going to hear it.
42:38I know.
42:40I can't see it.
42:42I'm not-
