00:00Sri Lankan authorities deployed the military on Friday to assist with relief and rescue operations,

00:08as floods and landslides triggered by Cyclone Ditwa have claimed at least 56 lives.

00:14Most of the fatalities were caused by landslides after torrential rainfall exceeding 300 mm over the past 24 hours,

00:22with the eastern and central regions hardest hit.

00:25Helicopters, Navy boats and armored personnel carriers are being used to evacuate stranded villagers across the country.

00:33Reports said over 20,500 Army personnel have already been deployed to the affected areas,

00:41and on Thursday alone, the Army rescued about 3,790 people and brought them to relief centers.

00:48Authorities said some 44,000 people have been evacuated to schools and other public shelters,

00:54including families trapped on rooftops.

00:57Schools remain closed and train services have been suspended,

01:01while the Colombo Stock Exchange announced an early trading halt.

01:04Cyclone Ditwa is expected to move northwards toward the neighboring Tamil Nadu state in India by Sunday.
