00:07triggered by heavy rains over the past three days.
00:10According to Anoja Seneviratne, Director of the Disaster Management Center, four of the
00:15victims were students who drowned after the tractor they were traveling in overturned
00:20and was swept away by floodwaters in Eravur, about 310 kilometers east of the capital.
00:26The remaining fatalities occurred in separate incidents involving landslides and people
00:30being washed away by rising waters.
00:33Sri Lanka's Department of Meteorology reported that a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal
00:38is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm and make landfall on the island's east coast
00:44by Thursday.
00:45However, the department forecasts that the storm's impact will begin to ease by Saturday.
