00:00I had just moved in one or two days before I hadn't met Michael before I moved into the house
00:19it was a place to stay and I thought maybe it was a gift from the universe because I wasn't
00:26making that much money so it was kind of with some relief well you know this is something
00:33I worked I believe until probably like somewhere between five to eight o'clock at night I don't
00:43remember the exact time I got home I just laid down on the sectional couch and was watching some TV
00:58and at some point you know went to sleep
01:02me thinking that this was my roommate's buddy cook stop messing around dude and he's like
01:18I'm not cook and I realized that this light you know is also accompanied by a shotgun
01:24and I was like okay and I proceeded to get choked out and I defecated on myself
01:34I presume that they're now going to take me somewhere because why else would they blindfold
01:45me and gag me and all these other things they said this is not about you just be quiet and you'll be
01:53all right I know if they take you somewhere else your chances rise exponentially that you are going
02:03to be killed I literally was clueless on who would have wanted this to happen to me
02:10get him in there
02:12I'm like okay this is happening where are we going let me try and pay attention as best I can
02:22shortly afterwards I'm like okay I hear what I think is them like putting gas in the car
02:36who kidnaps people and doesn't get gas first right you know that doesn't make much sense
02:41where's the fucking money we want the million dollars have a million dollars man very early on
02:52they're like we want the money and I was like all right cool you know what do you want and they're
02:58like we want we want a million dollars it's like how am I supposed to pay you a million dollars if I
03:03don't have a million dollars they kept saying million dollars million dollars million dollars and
03:09they're they're talking in a Mexican accent I would say stop crying like a little beach bulldog to make
03:15me think which I did you know that they're somehow gang affiliated or whatever you know I got hit in the
03:22face and my nose was all congested I couldn't breathe for shit I was like I got thirty thousand
03:28dollars in a safe and I have weed at the store that's probably worth you know hundred thousand
03:33dollars plus let's go there I'll give you everything that's there and they're like you think we're stupid
03:39there's cameras there we can't go there and I was like okay because I'm not telling them what they
03:48think is the truth they begin to hit me and use a rubber hose and at some point use a torch to bring
03:59me and at some point use a taser to tase me with they know where my parents live they know about my dog
04:08they know about my girlfriend what kind of car she drives they seem to know everything like like to a
04:14scary amount we're going away the f out there which doesn't make me feel any better about my
04:22situation it's like this is probably where I'm getting killed and where I'm getting buried the
04:29guy who was beating Michael said la musica and they put on this loud Mexican music he pretends to get on
04:40his cell phone my patron said if I can't have your million dollars that he wants your dick they pulled
04:50down my pants and they pull out my penis and affix a zip tie to the base of it so at this point you know
05:00I have no idea what's going on I'm in an immense amount of pain definitely not thinking right I'm in
05:07shock and then he proceeded to sing this weird little song like a five-year-old and back and
05:15forth and back and forth and back and forth they held me down and then proceeded to cut off my penis
05:26they poured bleach all over me which I thought was actually gasoline I figured I'm getting burned
05:45alive and I asked them you know not to burn me alive whoever it was who would cut off his penis took it
05:54with them and he said today's your lucky day and if you can find the knife you can cut yourself free
06:24at that point you know I knew Mary was out there with me which you know in all honesty
06:42At that point, you know, I knew Mary was out there with me, which, you know, in all honesty, made me feel a lot better.
06:57Michael?
07:02I'm not sure how. Still don't know.
07:06But I was able to cut the zip ties.
07:09Hold on.
07:12I know when someone has an injury like that, they can bleed out fairly quickly.
07:17And I did not want him to, I didn't want him to die.
07:26This whole time, I'm just like praying.
07:29I'm like, I hope, I hope, I hope she can get back to the road.
07:34She can find somebody. She can find her way back to me.
07:36We're going off-road to look for a second victim that has also been dropped off.
07:56Okay, he's right behind this fence.
08:09They're coming right now.
08:11We're here!
08:12He's going to get him off you, okay?
08:28They zip-tied and cut his penis off.
08:32Cut his penis off?
08:33Yeah.
08:34Okay.
08:34I'm leaving the zip tie on because it might be keeping him from bleeding out.
08:38Okay.
08:38I remember the morning pretty vividly that I got the call for the crime.
08:57I just got done with a SWAT call out, and I went home to catch some sleep.
09:03I think I was asleep for maybe two hours.
09:06The field sergeant in Newport Beach called and said they're working a kidnapping.
09:11And I asked a little bit more about it, and he's like,
09:13hey, two bodies got dumped in Kern County,
09:16and I need you to come back in and handle the investigation.
09:18When I got out to the scene in Newport Beach, I was already two hours behind,
09:26so I'm just kind of gathering information at that point.
09:30I don't touch anything.
09:31I don't move anything.
09:32I just get a feel for what is and what isn't.
09:36Would there be blood on that couch?
09:37No.
09:38Would there be cushions or pillows on that bed?
09:41Yes, they're not there.
09:42Where are they?
09:42I'm kind of assuming it's a robbery gone bad,
09:45but the house is actually well-kept.
09:47Someone that goes in to break into a house,
09:49they're, like, throwing clothes everywhere, flipping mattresses,
09:52they're just looking for jewelry, money.
09:54None of that was happening.
09:55And then we found, like, all of these bedsheets covered in blood
09:58and pillows covered in blood up in the storage unit on the third floor.
10:03And you start to think, okay, this was a direct hit,
10:06except when my detectives get to Michael and Mary,
10:09they're saying they have no idea who it is
10:11or why they would be going after him.
10:13At that point, it was a whodunit,
10:16and we had very little clues.
10:20I was bruised all over my body.
10:24I was in the hospital for three or four days,
10:26almost completely sedated.
10:29They actually believed that Michael was going to die.
10:33That's why Detective Ryan Peters was involved,
10:35because he's a homicide detective.
10:36I remember talking to the officer that found him,
10:40and he is a 30-year cop.
10:43And even him, when he was describing it,
10:45I can read in his face that he's like,
10:47hey, these are pretty gruesome.
10:49And I'm like, okay.
10:50Like, I get it.
10:50You know what I mean?
10:51Like, I'm a violent crime investigator.
10:53Like, I get it.
10:55Visually, the injuries didn't look that bad,
10:58but when you, like, couple it with the emotion of being kidnapped
11:01by somebody you don't know and the fear of death for, like, hours,
11:07these injuries are gruesome, and they're violent,
11:09and they're horrendous.
11:10And you start to attach emotion to it,
11:13which typically you don't.
11:14And so the injuries, like, appeared worse.
11:18The bleach burns were there, like, physical footprints in his skin.
11:21You can see them from the bleach and them standing on his chest.
11:26All his joints, his elbows, his hands, his shoulders are all swollen.
11:30And then you get all the way down to, like, the cutting off the penis,
11:33and just the thought and the visual is just overwhelming.
11:39I don't know if it's overwhelming because I'm a man
11:42or just overwhelming because you're, like,
11:44that was so violent and so gruesome
11:47and so much hate behind doing that.
11:51You almost felt the pain.
11:55Bravo 5, confirm your location.
11:57I'm sure they said something to you
11:59as to why you were getting beaten, all right?
12:03Control, Bravo 5, Matt, 14.
12:06A grateful white boy?
12:07A grateful white boy, yeah.
12:10What is it that you might be ungrateful for?
12:12Uh, for my business.
12:16They also asked for a million bucks.
12:19They asked for what?
12:19A million dollars.
12:21Okay.
12:21Which is really funny because I have about,
12:24all of, like, $8,000 to my name.
12:27Okay.
12:27Okay.
12:28Any cartels?
12:31No.
12:32Who might these guys be?
12:35I really don't know.
12:38Okay.
12:38No guesses?
12:39Uh...
12:41Interviewing Michael about the money,
12:45he was still extremely reluctant
12:47to open up the first,
12:49I mean, I would honestly say the first week.
12:53Cannabis still is illegal.
12:55What everybody does in California,
12:57Colorado, Missouri,
12:58Missouri is technically federally legal.
13:01Previous to about two or three years ago,
13:03almost all cannabis was transacted with cash.
13:07You know, somebody gives you product
13:08and you either give them a receipt
13:10and you pay them at a later time
13:11or you pay them cash right then and there.
13:14Less than a year ago,
13:15armored cars that were picking up cash
13:17from licensed cannabis dispensaries
13:19were getting pulled over by local sheriffs
13:21and having asset forfeitures done on them
13:24by the feds and local sheriffs together.
13:26So, so now you have to keep your money
13:29in another location
13:29that you hope you won't have police interaction
13:32where they're going to take your money.
13:38He didn't have any financials.
13:39Like, he worked in a cash business,
13:41so he didn't have any money.
13:43I mean, on paper, he was broke.
13:45But when you really looked into Wright Green
13:47and the other dispensaries
13:49that Michael was owner of
13:51or participating in,
13:52he was like the king of dispensaries
13:55in Orange County.
13:56And you realized,
13:57oh, he might actually be making this much money.
14:00And if he is making this much money,
14:02then it's going to invite anybody
14:04and everybody that is a suspect.
14:08So for the lead detective,
14:09I get all of the tips and advice
14:12and thoughts and theories.
14:13So I remember one of my partners saying,
14:15hey, I got a tip from a neighbor.
14:17She saw a license plate
14:18and then he goes in
14:19and tells me this whole story.
14:23One of the neighbors,
14:24the adjacent neighbor,
14:26saw three strange guys
14:27on October 1st the day before.
14:29But she described it as strange
14:30because they weren't
14:31obvious construction workers.
14:33They didn't have tools.
14:34They didn't have markings on their truck
14:35or anything like that.
14:37They put the ladder up against the house,
14:39but she thought it was suspicious
14:40because they never actually did any work.
14:42And then what was even more suspicious to her
14:45was the fact that
14:46only one of them drove away.
14:48And then she obviously saw
14:51all the police commotion
14:52that's going on around that house.
14:54And she approached us and said,
14:55hey, I still have a license plate
14:56from this quote unquote strange car
14:59from the day before.
15:02I remember keeping it on the desk
15:05and it's just the plate
15:06and like her name and her phone number.
15:07And so I'm like, all right.
15:09And then I rode the wave of tips coming in.
15:12And I remember for whatever reason,
15:14that license plate tip
15:16wasn't one of my favorite ones.
15:18The initial obvious like direction
15:20was Bill Bannon.
15:23Bill Bannon was one of my roommates.
15:25He was kind of a degenerative gambler.
15:28He had this really fun home game
15:29with a lot of people from Newport Beach.
15:31They gambled like crazy
15:32and they drank like crazy
15:33and they had a really good time.
15:35Oh, he was bad news.
15:37I heard him referred to as Bill Cannon
15:40because he was Bill Cannon, the closer.
15:44That's how he got me to go out with him
15:46was, you know,
15:47he just kept hammering away at me
15:49and I was like,
15:50okay, fine, I'll go to lunch.
15:53I mean, he's the kind of guy
15:54who will call you like literally
15:5540 or 50 times
15:58until you pick up the phone.
16:03One day I left work
16:07and so I unlocked the front door to go in
16:11and I see Bill sitting in the living room
16:13with this guy I've never seen before
16:17and they both look really serious
16:21and they're just sitting there
16:24in this sort of creepily empty house.
16:27I immediately thought
16:29this is some kind of a gambling debt situation.
16:33As I was taking my key out of the lock,
16:36I just put it right back in and left.
16:41Bill kind of bulldozed in
16:43and was like,
16:45come and stay at my house.
16:46It's, you know,
16:48we're two blocks from the beach
16:50and Newport and blah, blah, blah.
16:52I packed my stuff into a suitcase
16:55which is basically what I was living out of
16:57and I just moved in
16:59and that was Sunday night
17:03and all of this,
17:07I want to remember it happened on a Monday,
17:10Monday night.
17:11It's like,
17:12what are the chances?
17:17He's this mystery guy
17:18and he was the mystery guy
17:20like right at the beginning
17:21but like,
17:22it's not really jiving.
17:24We were going in a completely different direction
17:26of like weed and money
17:28and it's a hit
17:29and it's an employee.
17:30Like I thought it was an in-house type deal.
17:35And then I remember it was like the next day
17:37that I ran the plate
17:39just to like,
17:39oh, well,
17:40who is this?
17:41And it came back
17:42and it's not a male Hispanic.
17:43It comes back to Kyle Hanley
17:45at a Fountain Valley
17:45and he's got a history with weed
17:48and arrests with weed
17:49and tickets with weed
17:50and then I'm like,
17:51okay,
17:52maybe I'll look into this a little bit more.
17:53So I have a team looking into Kyle Hanley
17:59up in Fountain Valley
18:00and what I'm doing is
18:02is they're giving me real-time information.
18:04This is what the house looks like.
18:05This is what his car looks like.
18:07This is what his criminal history looks like.
18:09The energy bill is through the roof.
18:11We're talking excessive for that area.
18:13So he's in the weed industry
18:14and then who else is in the house?
18:16Nobody else is coming in and out of that house.
18:18Doesn't even look like
18:19he's furnished the house completely.
18:23The truck,
18:23this truck now has a camper shell on it.
18:25Is he trying to clean it rapidly?
18:27No, he wasn't.
18:28But also he wasn't driving it.
18:31He was driving another car.
18:32So he's leaving that car alone.
18:34Well, why is he leaving that car alone?
18:37The really interesting thing about Kyle is
18:40he wasn't sleeping.
18:41Like he would stay in the living room
18:43playing Xbox and smoking weed
18:44or going to 7-Eleven
18:45and coming back for like a day.
18:47Like never sleeping.
18:49And so it was very telling to us
18:51that he's anxious.
18:53He's nervous.
18:54He's worried.
18:56I put it all together,
18:58wrote a warrant,
18:59asked the guys,
19:00hey, next time he leaves,
19:02find a reason to pull him over.
19:04Vehicle code violation.
19:06And I'll go talk to him.
19:10He left late night,
19:11another 7-Eleven run.
19:13He goes,
19:14he violates a vehicle code violation.
19:16They pull him over.
19:18I'm at home in bed.
19:19And so they call me.
19:20I get out of bed.
19:21Wake up.
19:23And I'm like telling everybody,
19:24don't talk to him.
19:25Don't say a word.
19:26I'm going to do all the investigation.
19:27Don't read him his rights.
19:28Just hold him there for 15 more minutes.
19:31I'll be there.
19:33I introduce myself.
19:34Hey, I'm Detective Ryan Peters
19:36with Newport Beach Police Department.
19:38You understand what, Detective?
19:39Yes.
19:40You understand?
19:41I know you.
19:42I saw, like,
19:44the color of his skin change.
19:46He went white.
19:47Obviously, you don't know
19:48how much I know.
19:50But it's enough to get to search for it.
19:52He started sweating.
19:54Didn't open his mouth.
19:56Are you going to be okay?
19:57Yeah.
19:58I don't know what this is about, sir.
20:00And I said,
20:01hey, I'd like to talk to you
20:02about the kidnapping
20:03of Michael and Mary.
20:04And he just immediately said,
20:05I would just rather not
20:06answer any questions
20:07without my attorney.
20:09After kind of looking into Kyle,
20:25I just need to tie him to Michael.
20:27And I'm hoping Michael could do that.
20:29When they brought up
20:30the name Kyle Hanley,
20:32it didn't really even register.
20:34I don't think I was relating
20:36his last name to his first name
20:38because I never really
20:39used his last name.
20:40I just remember
20:41Michael kind of taking
20:43this big breath
20:43and kind of staring at the photo.
20:45And then I knew he knew
20:47who he was
20:47before he even opened his mouth.
20:49And so he goes,
20:50yeah, I know Kyle.
20:53I meet Kyle Hanley
20:55sometime in 2011.
20:58Kyle.
20:59Michael.
21:00Nice to meet you.
21:01You too.
21:01What you got?
21:02School of homegrown.
21:04He told the girl
21:05that worked at the front desk
21:06that he was a vendor
21:09and he'd like to show
21:10his product to a buyer.
21:14Smells good too.
21:15At that point,
21:16if I evaluate it,
21:17I think it's going to be
21:18a good purchase.
21:19I actually bring in
21:20one of my buddies
21:20who's a big, big smoker.
21:22I'll call my test dummy
21:23and he would, you know,
21:26roll up a little joint of it,
21:28smoke it and be like,
21:29yeah, that's good.
21:3060, 980,
21:32two grand.
21:33All right, man.
21:34We'll see how it sells.
21:35You know, I bought, I think,
21:36like a quarter pound
21:37or a half pound of weed from him.
21:39A couple days later,
21:40I look on the shelf like,
21:41whoa, we're almost out.
21:42It's like, okay,
21:42I'll call him up
21:43and get some more.
21:44So I hit him up,
21:45had him come in
21:46and bring in a couple
21:46of pounds this time
21:47because I saw, obviously,
21:48the customers like it.
21:50I'm telling you.
21:50I think his second transaction
21:52was in the range
21:53of $5,000 to $6,000.
21:56Four.
21:57That's six grand, man.
21:59Boy, he was paying me
22:00in 20s.
22:01And apparently,
22:02I made some dumbass joke
22:04that I don't remember.
22:05Because I buried the hundreds.
22:07Huh.
22:09And that's kind of how
22:11I struck up somewhat
22:12of the friendship with Kyle.
22:13Yeah.
22:14So one weekend,
22:15I was like,
22:16what are you up to this weekend?
22:18What are you getting into?
22:19And he's like,
22:19oh, I'm actually,
22:20I'm going to go to Vegas.
22:21And I said,
22:22uh, we're actually
22:23going to be out there too,
22:24me and my partner.
22:25And he's like, oh, yeah?
22:26We should all go out and hang.
22:28Dude, let's freaking party.
22:29Yeah.
22:32The itinerary of our Vegas trip
22:34was we would go out,
22:36you know, nice dinners at night
22:37and then go to the clubs,
22:38which always ended up
22:40meaning going to the strip clubs after.
22:42And pretty much
22:43we did that repeated.
22:45The entire trip was paid in cash
22:47between me and my partner.
22:48We spent between $30,000
22:49and $40,000.
22:51It was a ton of cash at the time.
22:52It was too much.
22:54You know,
22:54I just fell for the peer pressure
22:56and did it.
22:59My view of Kyle
23:00as part of the group
23:01was just like
23:02he was one of the guys.
23:03I remember seeing
23:04a big grin on his face
23:06when we were at the strip club.
23:07I don't think we really
23:08made him pay for much either.
23:10He didn't pay for the hotel room.
23:11He didn't pay for the clubs
23:13or anything.
23:13I think the only thing
23:14he really paid for
23:15was the gambling.
23:16So he kind of got
23:17a free trip out of it.
23:18After that,
23:23Kyle just, you know,
23:25ghosted me.
23:26And at first,
23:27I didn't really make
23:28a big deal of it.
23:29I think I was probably
23:31actually the reason
23:32that I thought about it
23:33was that I was calling him up
23:34to get some more weed off him.
23:35So I called him.
23:38His phone wasn't working anymore
23:39and I just figured, you know,
23:40he'd change his number
23:41or he got out of town
23:42or, you know,
23:44maybe he got in trouble.
23:45I didn't really think much of it.
23:47I think that's when
23:48the plan started to hatch.
23:50Dude, this guy's a high roller.
23:51He's spending tons of money
23:53on these big expensive suites
23:55in Las Vegas.
23:56And then the way they repay him
23:58is basically to sneak
23:59into his house
24:00and then proceed to
24:01torture him,
24:01tase him,
24:02burn him,
24:03whip him,
24:03chop his dick off
24:04and leave him in the desert.
24:05There's no way,
24:07in my opinion,
24:09a human today
24:10would take a million dollars cash
24:11and bury it
24:12in a public place.
24:14Like, it's just a little dumb.
24:16If he was really intelligent,
24:17he would have realized
24:18that that land
24:19was for sale.
24:20No, I really think
24:21you should come
24:21and see the property
24:22and take a look at it.
24:23This gentleman named Chaz
24:25came into the store
24:26who we thought
24:28was a very successful
24:29businessman in Orange County.
24:31And he was telling me
24:32about this gold mine
24:34that he had,
24:34you know,
24:35out in the desert and stuff
24:36and I was just kind of
24:37listening to a story,
24:38you know,
24:38like whatever.
24:39And he was like,
24:41well, you know,
24:41would you be interested
24:42in investing in it?
24:44And I was like,
24:45you know,
24:45I'll go check it out with you.
24:58We drive for a very long time.
25:01He's kind of showing me
25:03around this whole property,
25:04which is just to me,
25:06just a bunch of desert.
25:08I had no idea.
25:08I was like,
25:09where's the gold, dude?
25:10You know,
25:10like,
25:11how do we get the gold here?
25:12And he's like,
25:14well,
25:14we get it out of the rocks.
25:15And I was like,
25:16oh,
25:17if you give me
25:17the first $300,000,
25:19then we can get
25:21this back and running.
25:23I was like,
25:23dude,
25:23I have like 40 grand
25:24in my name.
25:25I don't think
25:25I got the money for that.
25:27He's like,
25:27I'm sure you and your partners
25:29could get it together
25:30and everything.
25:30And then I realized,
25:31like,
25:32this is a scam.
25:32So as soon as Kyle lawyers up,
25:48we take him back
25:49for processing
25:50to the Newport Beach Jail.
25:52So we're not arresting him
25:53for the kidnapping.
25:54We're not arresting him
25:55for the mayhem
25:56or any of the crime
25:57that's related to Michael and Mary.
25:59We have to keep him in custody
26:00for something else.
26:02So then I have to call
26:03everybody back out that night.
26:05First thing we do,
26:06I remember my crime scene
26:08investigator and I,
26:09we have the keys
26:09to this truck.
26:13This could be the crime scene
26:15that they used.
26:16So we open up
26:17the back of the truck
26:18and it's just this
26:20massive smell of bleach.
26:22And I immediately,
26:23again,
26:23get really excited.
26:25And I'm like,
26:26he cleaned the entire
26:27back of this truck.
26:30And as I'm walking
26:33through this house,
26:34I'm like,
26:34all right,
26:34there's nothing in here.
26:36It's all gone.
26:37You know,
26:37it's just three days
26:38post the crime.
26:39Any good criminal
26:40would have gotten rid
26:41of everything, right?
26:42Next thing you know,
26:43I find these zip ties.
26:44And I look at the zip ties.
26:45I'm like,
26:45ah,
26:45I get a little more excited.
26:47Like these match
26:47the zip ties we found
26:48on Michael and Mary.
26:50This is when we go
26:50into the backyard
26:51and there's like trash bags
26:52just sitting up
26:52against the back slider.
26:54So we slowly,
26:55methodically kind of
26:56go through those trash bags.
26:57And there's towels.
26:58We're pulling towels out
26:59that reek of bleach.
27:01And then we're testing
27:02them for blood
27:02and they're coming
27:03back positive.
27:05And then we keep
27:05pulling out further
27:06and then we find
27:07this cut zip tie
27:08that matches the zip tie
27:10that Mary and Michael
27:11had on him,
27:11that matches the zip tie
27:12that's inside his house.
27:13That's the exact moment
27:14I'm calling
27:15District Attorney Matt Murphy.
27:17He's like,
27:17yep,
27:17you're good to go.
27:19File the kidnapping
27:20charges on Kyle.
27:24We got really excited.
27:26We've got Kyle Hanley
27:26in custody.
27:27And then the next step
27:28is like,
27:29who is Kyle Hanley?
27:30And when you look
27:31into Kyle Hanley,
27:33Kyle Hanley's nobody.
27:34Kyle is not
27:36a sophisticated criminal.
27:37I mean,
27:38he didn't fill up
27:38the van on the way
27:40to kidnap people
27:41and take them
27:41to the desert.
27:42So he's like,
27:43not the brightest
27:44candle on the cake.
27:45I mean,
27:45you have to imagine this.
27:46I have Kyle in custody,
27:48dead to rights.
27:49Like,
27:49he's the guy.
27:49He's involved.
27:50It still doesn't like,
27:51get me the other suspects.
27:54And even looking
27:54at his phone,
27:55you're looking at names,
27:56but none of them
27:56make sense to you.
27:58During the kidnapping,
27:58they're using
27:59these reservoir dog nicknames.
28:01Here are your names.
28:04Mr. Brown.
28:05Mr. White.
28:06Mr. Blonde.
28:08Mr. Blue.
28:09Mr. Orange.
28:10Mr. Pink.
28:12Mr. Pink sounds
28:12like Mr. Pussy.
28:13No one came back
28:23to the house
28:24except me
28:25because I had
28:26nowhere else to go.
28:29I was scared.
28:31I thought,
28:32you know,
28:33maybe someone
28:34will be hiding
28:34and they'll jump out again
28:36while I'm sleeping.
28:38And I kind of
28:39looked over
28:39the whole house.
28:40Instead of sleeping
28:43in the master bedroom,
28:45which had a broken
28:46lock on the door,
28:48I took my little
28:49Chihuahua Bailey
28:50and I had this
28:51big blanket
28:52that I had brought
28:53from Florida
28:53that was super cuddly.
28:55And I took my pillow
28:57and my blanket
28:58into the little
28:59den room
29:01because it had
29:01two deadbolt locks
29:03and I would sleep
29:04in there
29:05and I felt
29:06a little bit safer.
29:08But there was
29:11blood on the couch.
29:19Now at this point,
29:20we're looking for DNA.
29:22We're looking for clues.
29:23Another arrow
29:24that I can follow.
29:25And
29:26at this point,
29:27it starts to dry up
29:29and I start
29:29to get frustrated.
29:30I start to go after
29:31Mike a little bit more.
29:34And I'm like,
29:35Mike, man,
29:35there's got to be more.
29:36Who's Kyle's buddies?
29:38Who's his friends?
29:39Who's he hanging out with?
29:39How often do you see him?
29:41What car does he normally drive?
29:42And Mike can't just
29:43give me anything.
29:44And it's not his fault.
29:46He just,
29:47Kyle never introduced
29:48any of it to him.
29:53So for months,
29:54I had nothing.
29:58The second I arrested Kyle,
30:00you know,
30:01that kickstarted everything.
30:02And so the clock sped up.
30:05It affected my ability
30:06to be a present father.
30:09Like I stopped coaching.
30:11I didn't have time to do that.
30:12There was days
30:13that I just stayed at work,
30:14you know,
30:15for three days
30:16and I didn't come home.
30:20I want to go to bed at night
30:22knowing that I provided justice
30:24to Michael and Mary.
30:25On December of 2012,
30:31finally I got a hit
30:32on the glove
30:34that we found
30:34in Kyle's truck.
30:37So now I'm extremely excited.
30:39In a few days,
30:39I'm going to have this name
30:40that's attached to it
30:41and I hope
30:43that it's not
30:44like my CSI investigator.
30:46It's not anyone else's DNA.
30:48You know,
30:48like please don't be a mistake.
30:51Be somebody
30:51that's tied into this.
30:56And then sure enough,
30:57I get this name,
30:58Hossein Nairi.
30:59And I'm like,
31:00who's Hossein Nairi?
31:02Hossein was born in Iran
31:12to parents
31:15who were very successful.
31:17His mother
31:18was a practicing attorney.
31:20His father
31:21was a practicing physician.
31:24There were some things
31:25that happened in Iran
31:26with his father
31:28that were sort of tragic.
31:30My understanding
31:31from the family
31:32is that his father
31:34had been kidnapped
31:35and held for ransom
31:36for many years.
31:37And I believe to this day
31:39he has never been located
31:40or found.
31:47When he entered
31:48the United States,
31:50he still dealt
31:52with those sort of demons.
31:57When you're diving
31:58into Hossein
31:59and we learn that,
32:00you know,
32:00he's got a violent history,
32:02we also learn that
32:02he's got a criminal
32:03past as well.
32:06A long time ago,
32:07he killed his friend
32:08in a vehicle accident.
32:09He was intoxicated,
32:10he had cocaine on board,
32:11he had alcohol on board,
32:13and they were coming back
32:14from a casino
32:14and he ended up crashing,
32:17rolling his car.
32:22Hossein was actually
32:23badly burned
32:23and lost a few toes
32:25and his friend was killed.
32:26And his friend was killed
32:27during that accident.
32:28They were going to go
32:29and arrest him
32:30for vehicle manslaughter.
32:31Well, he fled.
32:32He fled to South America
32:33and for a year,
32:34he was gone on the run
32:36and then later,
32:37he snuck back in,
32:38was convicted
32:39on a lesser charge,
32:40had to go to rehab
32:41and basically didn't serve
32:44any jail time at all.
32:47Immediately, you know,
32:48start searching databases,
32:50Hossein Nayiri,
32:51and local database first,
32:52Newport Beach,
32:53and his name pops.
32:55And when it pops,
32:56it's associated
32:57with an evading case
32:58that took place
32:59in Newport Beach.
33:00Hossein was, you know,
33:09drinking and driving
33:10and he boot scooted
33:13it out of there
33:14and led a motor officer
33:16from Newport Beach
33:17on this high-speed car chase.
33:24This motor officer
33:25actually got in trouble
33:26for going like
33:27over 100 miles an hour
33:28and Hossein's in a tunnel.
33:30Hossein Nayiri gets out,
33:46jumps in the water,
33:47and then swims off
33:49and he evades us.
33:50Like, we can't
33:51apprehend him that night.
33:52The plate comes back
33:53to an address
33:54in Newport Beach.
33:57And they got a girl
33:58named Courtney Shigerian
33:59and they start asking her,
34:00like, hey,
34:00who's Hossein Nayiri
34:01and why does he have
34:03your vehicle?
34:04Because the vehicle
34:05is registered to her.
34:06And she's like,
34:07oh, it's my husband
34:08and he should have it.
34:09And they're like,
34:10oh, no,
34:10he was involved
34:11in a pursuit
34:12and he's not here.
34:13And that's when
34:14she flips on them
34:15that night
34:15and is like,
34:16I think it was stolen.
34:17Like, I don't know
34:18where he's at.
34:19They're like,
34:19hey, can we have
34:20his phone number?
34:20Let's call him.
34:21She's like,
34:22I'm not giving you
34:22his phone number.
34:23I'm not doing anything.
34:24So when I run,
34:27you know,
34:28his name
34:28and I find out
34:29he's involved
34:29in the invading case
34:30and I run the plate
34:31that he used
34:32to evade the cops in
34:34and it comes back
34:34to this Tahoe
34:35and it automatically
34:36pops up where it's at
34:37and who's in possession
34:38of it.
34:39And it says
34:40it's in our tow yard.
34:42And I immediately
34:42run out there
34:43and take a look
34:45to make sure
34:45it's still out there,
34:46it's still in our control,
34:48the windows are up,
34:49it's not being tampered with.
34:50And then I have to run
34:51immediately back
34:52to the police station
34:53and write a warrant for it
34:54so that I can investigate
34:55everything that's in it.
35:06I don't technically know
35:07what's going to be
35:08in this car,
35:09but I want to tie it
35:10to him at some point.
35:21So when I open it,
35:22there's not a ton
35:23of stuff in there.
35:24There's some male clothes,
35:26some sandals,
35:27some shoes.
35:28I do find the paperwork
35:29on it where he is insured
35:30on the vehicle,
35:32she is the registered owner
35:33and then I'm kind of
35:34going through
35:34and there's not much,
35:35you know,
35:35I'm looking for,
35:36you know,
35:36zip ties,
35:37panda paper,
35:38the stuff that I know about,
35:39right?
35:39And none of that's
35:40in this Tahoe.
35:40It's like an everyday
35:41use kind of car.
35:43But then as I go through it
35:44on the floorboard,
35:45just like just underneath
35:46the seat that's kind
35:47of sliding out,
35:47it's a weird box
35:48and I open the box
35:49and I'm like,
35:50oh,
35:50it's a GPS tracker
35:51and then I open
35:53this other box
35:54and it's another
35:54GPS tracker.
35:56Open another box
35:57and it's a little
35:57mini camera
35:58and I'm like,
35:59well,
36:00there's going to be
36:00information on this.
36:06I'm seeing like
36:07the thumbnail
36:08and the photo
36:09of all the videos
36:10that are popping up
36:11and every photo
36:12is Michael's house.
36:13I spent an entire week
36:15watching video
36:16of all the downloads
36:18that this camera
36:19was capturing.
36:19and the date
36:21is six months
36:21prior to the incident
36:22and it's blowing me away.
36:27Yeah, buddy.
36:30God bless America.
36:33This is how you do it,
36:34huh?
36:34Learn a thing.
36:35This is how you do it.
36:38Military training
36:39does pay off, buddy.
36:41They watched him
36:42for six months?
36:44Like, why?
36:45What happened?
36:46Who are these guys?
36:55There are killers
36:56that are cold
36:57and they're dead
36:58to the world.
36:59But like,
37:00Hossein's a different breed.
37:01When you look back
37:02on this crime,
37:03it's almost like
37:03he enjoyed it.
37:04He liked it.
37:06He liked manipulating people.
37:07He likes controlling people.
37:09He likes hurting people.
37:10He likes hunting people.
37:12So like,
37:13that type of
37:14mental framework
37:15that he has
37:16is 100%
37:18the most unique individual
37:20I've ever had
37:20to hunt down.
37:21So I send a team
37:35to start following Courtney.
37:37Where's Courtney?
37:37Well, they moved
37:38from that house
37:38they listed.
37:40So as soon as
37:41we started doing that,
37:42we realized pretty quick,
37:44like,
37:44we don't see Hossein anywhere.
37:47We see Courtney, like,
37:48driving around,
37:49running errands,
37:50going back and forth
37:51from school.
37:52But we don't see Hossein.
37:54And for the several days
37:55after that,
37:56Hossein is showing
37:57in Courtney's apartment.
38:02He's not going on food runs.
38:03He's not going to the gym.
38:05He's not going to work.
38:06He's making Courtney
38:06do everything.
38:07And he's hiding out
38:08from cops
38:08because we have
38:09Kyle Hanley in pocket.
38:10I know at this point
38:11he's a potentially
38:12armed and dangerous suspect.
38:14He's a violent felon.
38:16He's got violent tendencies.
38:18Like,
38:18I'm not going to just
38:19door knock this thing.
38:20I remember
38:24from talking
38:25to the pursuit investigator
38:27that she really
38:29wanted that Tahoe back
38:30because the only way
38:30they were going to get it back
38:31from the pursuit investigator
38:33was if
38:33Hossein Nairi
38:34came in
38:35and gave a statement.
38:36And that wasn't
38:37going to happen.
38:38So they just, like,
38:39left the car.
38:42I call her and say,
38:43hey, this is Newport Beach
38:44Police Department.
38:45I'm investigator Ryan Peters.
38:47I don't tell her
38:47what I'm investigating.
38:48And I just say,
38:49hey, you're going to have
38:50your car back.
38:51We're done with it.
38:52And you can come pick it up
38:53and sign for it.
38:54And she comes down.
38:59Well, as we're kind of
39:00setting up this ruse,
39:01I have physical officers
39:02at the apartment.
39:03They're going to
39:04storm the castle,
39:06serve the warrant,
39:07and go in and apprehend him
39:08and safeguard the evidence
39:10for me while I'm talking
39:11to her at the station.
39:14Newport Beach set up
39:15surveillance equipment
39:16inside, like,
39:17the property room.
39:18You know,
39:18they had no intention
39:19of turning over
39:20the property.
39:22She's nice.
39:23We're talking about
39:24her leaving it there
39:25for so long.
39:26I'm telling her
39:27we're going to waive
39:28the Toffees
39:28because it's extremely
39:29expensive at this point.
39:31I wish there was
39:32a videotape on my face
39:33because you're literally
39:34leaving the evidence
39:36on the table
39:36of a crime.
39:38So say, like,
39:38a bloody knife,
39:39and you're like,
39:39do you want this knife?
39:40And she's going to say,
39:41yes, I do,
39:42and she's going to take it.
39:43And you're like,
39:43what in the world?
39:44And so I've got
39:45this GPS tracker,
39:47and I've got these cameras,
39:48and it looks nefarious.
39:49Like, nobody has this stuff.
39:51I'm like, here,
39:51sign this paperwork,
39:52and you can take
39:53all this stuff.
39:54And she's like,
39:55no problem.
40:00She goes to grab
40:01this stuff.
40:01I'm like, oh, hold on.
40:02This is evidence
40:03to a kidnapping
40:04that I'd like
40:05to talk to you about.
40:06And that's when
40:07that switch flips.
40:08She goes from this sweet,
40:09conversational,
40:11like, innocent girl
40:11to this very upset,
40:15pissed off,
40:16do you know who I am?
40:17And she starts throwing out,
40:18like, do you know
40:19who you're talking to?
40:20Do you know who my father is?
40:21I'm a lawyer.
40:23And then I'm like,
40:23hey, you're not a lawyer.
40:24You're in law school.
40:25She's like,
40:25I know what you're doing.
40:26You're tricking me.
40:27You can't do that.
40:28I'm going to sue you.
40:29And she's getting
40:29very pissed off about it.
40:36And so then
40:47I have to calm her down,
40:49tell her about the kidnapping.
40:51I tell her,
40:52hey, I'm actually
40:53not a property investigator.
40:55I investigate violent crime
40:57and I'm investigating
40:58kidnapping involving
40:59Michael and Mary.
41:00It involves
41:01Hossein Nairi
41:02and Kyle Hanley.
41:03Who are they to you?
41:05And she clams up.
41:07We proceed to just
41:08kind of go through
41:08the warrant, right?
41:09I take her property.
41:10I take her phone.
41:11And when they
41:13open the apartment,
41:14here, here.
41:20Nothing.
41:21It's clean.
41:23Phone's in there,
41:24but he's not.
41:27And that's when
41:29I got nervous.
41:31That's when
41:32I actually kind of
41:33started to panic.
41:34Then she knew
41:35that we were on to her
41:36and that we were
41:37on to Hossein.
41:38We have no idea
41:40where he is.
41:41We don't have his phone.
41:42I have no way
41:43to track him.
41:44And it's all clean.
41:50Ladies and gentlemen,
41:52we have begun
41:52our descent into Tehran.
41:54Please turn off
41:55all portable electronic
41:56devices and stow them
41:57until we have arrived
41:58at the gate.
42:01Introducing myself
42:02like first name,
42:03last name.
42:05This is
42:06Hossein Nairi
42:07speaking.
42:11Let's see.
42:12Let's see.
42:13Let's see.
42:21Let's see.
42:22We're going to have a
42:23time.
42:23Let's see.
42:24Let's see.
42:24Let's see.
42:25Let's see.
42:25She is seen as this perfect victim.
42:52I don't think that's necessarily true.
42:55If I have a plan, she encourages it.
43:00How can we create a scenario where we arrest him?
43:04They're going to go to jail for the rest of their lives.
43:07Now comes the ruse.
43:08Apparently it's pretty easy to escape from the French County Jail.
43:11Adios.
43:12Oh my God, they let Hannibal Lecter out.
43:15True Crime Story Smugshot.
