00:00According to a new study, Fortnite has surpassed Facebook and Instagram as tween's preferred social platform.
00:06Now you might be asking, isn't Fortnite just a video game where characters do funny dances like this one,
00:11that's the floss, or this one? See, I know cool teen things.
00:15Well, a new study from National Research Group says it's also a form of social media.
00:19Fortnite players spend more of their free time logging into the Battle Royale game than they do scrolling through Facebook and Instagram,
00:26or streaming on Netflix and YouTube.
00:28In the two years since its July 2017 launch, Fortnite has grown into a global phenomenon,
00:33with more than 250 million active players.
00:36Netflix CEO Reed Hastings was onto something when he noted in January that the streaming giant
00:40competes and loses more with Fortnite than with HBO.
00:44The reason? Well, the CEO of Fortnite developer Epic Games Tim Sweeney says,
00:48Fortnite was designed to be a social experience.
00:51Because in addition to competitive matches, Fortnite offers activities for people who just want to hang out in its virtual world.
00:56For example, in February, DJ Marshmello hosted an in-game concert that drew, get this, 10 million viewers. Whoa.
01:04When it drops, let me see everybody, let me see you, let me see you, let me see you, let me see you, let me see you.
01:14While the majority of Fortnite users are young, it's the tween demographic that is spending more time in the game in 2019.
01:20National Research Group reports that 53% of survey respondents ages 10 to 12 play Fortnite weekly,
01:26significantly more than those who said they use Facebook and Instagram regularly.
01:30Alright, for the full survey results, head to THR.com.
01:33Until next time, for The Hollywood Reporter News, I'm Tiffany Taylor.
01:36See, I got the plus down. I got it down.
