Les créatures fantastiques ont la cote au cinéma : retour sur l'histoire de la création des monstres et autres machines dans le Septième art, à travers les âges.
00:30One of the reasons I do what I do is because I saw Frankenstein on TV as a kid.
00:40I was fascinated by the look of the character, but also that whole concept of creating life.
00:47It's kind of godlike to create something that never existed before.
00:50That feeling, there's nothing else like it in the world.
00:53The very first emotional reaction that I have to that creation is when it moves for the first time.
01:00To me, a creature is successful when it has attributes that I can emotionally connect to.
01:06Anytime we get a chance to do a full-on character that goes through a range of emotions like sadness or surprise or joy,
01:15that's a real character and we're always grateful for that opportunity.
01:18These creatures that we build and create, it's not just movement, it's not just making a big monster creature that can move.
01:25It's no different from acting, except it's more technically challenging.
01:30We go to great lengths every time we design a creature to try to fool the audience.
01:36The best monsters on the big screen are the ones that convince the audience that there's something real going on.
01:42And also the ones that have a neurosis of personality or something that the audience can relate to.
01:47The suspension of disbelief. Do you believe it or not?
01:50A great creature has the emotional response designed into it.
01:53In the 80s, early 90s, all the way into the mid-90s, all of us, we were almost like rock stars.
01:58You know, slowly it kind of, as a makeup masters, went away and now, of course, they've been replaced by animators.
02:05But it's very important that younger generation picks it up and keeps going forward with it.
02:11We just got lucky. We kind of happened to be in the right place at the right time.
02:15It was the entire process of creating imaginary worlds.
02:21It's important to keep that kid spirit alive in you because that's what got you into it in the first place.
02:26We really consider ourselves like character designers and we bring those characters to life through whatever technique is best suited for the production company.
02:34That's what we do. We bring character to these things.
