The Pentagon has announced that an additional 500 troops will be deployed to Washington D.C. following the targeted shooting of two National Guard members near the White House. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said the decision was made at the direction of President Donald Trump as authorities continue investigating the attack, which left both soldiers critically injured.

The incident occurred near Farragut Square, where a lone suspect allegedly opened fire before being subdued by other National Guard personnel in the area. Federal and local agencies, including the FBI, are working to determine the motive and gather further details about the weapon used and the suspect’s background.

00:00I'll start by saying we had a series of very productive meetings, but I want to start by saying after those meetings, myself and my team were notified that two National Guardsmen have been shot in Washington, D.C., critically wounded.
00:16The shooter shot in a cowardly, dastardly act targeting the best of America, heroes willing to serve in Washington, D.C., serve for people they don't know and they've never met because they love their country and their capital and their community.
00:36They were willing to do dangerous things others were not because they love their fellow Americans.
00:43And someone decided to turn that into targeting National Guardsmen.
00:48That will only stiffen our resolve.
00:51We will never back down. We will secure our capital, secure our cities.
00:56In fact, this happened just steps away from the White House.
00:58It will not stand.
00:59And that's why President Trump has asked me and I will ask the Secretary of the Army to the National Guard to add 500 additional troops, National Guardsmen to Washington, D.C.
01:10This will only stiffen our resolve to ensure that we make Washington, D.C. safe and beautiful.
01:17The drop in crime has been historic.
01:20The increase in safety and security has been historic.
01:23But if criminals want to conduct things like this, violence against America's best, we will never back down.
01:30President Trump will never back down.
01:33That's why the American people elected him.
01:35America and our warriors, our National Guardsmen are strong.
01:38And so we're following this very closely.
01:41We're getting information rapidly.
01:43And I mentioned the faith of this country, the Christian faith, the prayers.
01:50I would ask for prayers for our National Guardsmen.
01:52Excuse me, Mr.
01:53Appeals to heaven for our National Guardsmen, for their families on bended knee as a war department, as a nation.
02:02Excuse me.
02:03We will never back down when we think about them right now.

02:30Our borders will be secured, whether it's the Dominican Republic or the United States of America.
02:34And we look forward to working with our partners to make it happen.
02:38You know, President Trump believes in a clear principle, peace through strength.
02:44You get peace by being strong.
02:47And if you're a narco-terrorist who wants to bring drugs to the United States of America, we will find you, we will fix you, and we will finish you.
02:56Because we have all the rights in the world.
02:58We've got lots of attorneys and lots of intel analysts, and we know exactly who we're targeting and why.
03:03If you're involved in that conduct, we will kill you.
03:07It's that deadly serious because of the poison that has made its way into the American public for far too long.
03:15President Trump is serious about it.
03:17We're serious about it, and we're proud to be working with the Dominican Republic, another country very serious about ensuring that cartels don't set the agenda.
