00:00Increasing taxes puts the squeeze on working people.
00:04In your manifesto, you said Labour will not increase taxes on working people.
00:10Then, last year in your budget, you acknowledged that extending the freeze on thresholds on tax would hurt working people,
00:20which is why you said last year you would not do it.
00:23How can anyone believe anything you say?
00:27I'm Chancellor in the world as it is, not in the world that I might like it to be.
00:34I do have to respond to new forecasts and events unfolding around the world.
00:41From 2028, I have made that decision to freeze those thresholds.
00:47Next year, whilst the cost of living is still an acute challenge for people,
00:53I'm taking £150 off people's bills as well as those freezes in prescription and rail fares that I mentioned to Ed.
01:01I'm not pretending that what I did yesterday is not asking working people to contribute more,
01:10but because of other changes we've made around gambling taxes, around higher value properties,
01:17means that I was able to keep that to an absolute minimum.
01:20Thank you,
