00:01
I'm Lily Douse and this is Grand Voyager.
00:05
From my base in Qatar, I travel the world to discover incredible places
00:10
filled with culture, luxury and adventure.
00:13
Along the way, I meet the people, taste the flavors
00:17
and experience the moments that make each destination unforgettable.
00:22
Today, I'm travelling from Qatar to one of the world's most iconic cities,
00:31
my country of origin.
00:33
I'm here in London, a place celebrated for its rich history,
00:37
famous landmarks and classic British style.
00:41
Hello and welcome to London.
00:43
In this episode, I'll explore the charm of England's capital.
00:48
From its famous streets and shops to its incredible food
00:52
and hidden gems that make the city so special.
00:56
Exploring London's famous areas, you can really feel the history around you.
01:02
Walking on the cobbled streets of London really does take you back on time.
01:06
The city might now be super vibrant, but think back then,
01:10
it was a whole different world.
01:13
And that mix of old and new is what makes London so special.
01:17
It's all part of its charm.
01:20
Tucked away in the heart of Covent Garden is Bridget's Bakery.
01:24
And it's here, inside this cosy cafe, that I'm meeting Matthew,
01:28
one of the bakery's expert tour guides.
01:31
Known for its cakes and classic afternoon tea,
01:34
Bridget's Bakery has taken this tradition a step further,
01:38
turning it into a moving experience.
01:40
It's a fun twist on a London classic.
01:43
Okay, so Lily, we've got our lovely afternoon tea selection here.
01:46
You might see a few of the traditional sort of sandwiches,
01:49
as well as our lovely sweet treats on top.
01:52
And then later we have our scones too, to which obviously people can have cream, jam.
01:56
You can have it as a massive dollop on top, mix it all up.
01:59
As long as you enjoy it, that's all that matters.
02:01
As the tour gets underway, the bus follows a route packed with some of London's most iconic sights.
02:07
The perfect mix of great food and classic city views.
02:11
So we're actually passing Trafalgar Square, Nelson's Column,
02:16
and at the base you've got those four iconic lion statues.
02:20
Also as we're heading down Whitehall, we'll be heading past 10 Downing Street.
02:24
Of course that's where the Prime Minister lives.
02:26
So we'll be heading into Parliament Square, where of course you've got the House of Parliament,
02:30
and you've got the Elizabeth Tower, which contains Big Ben.
02:34
Now normally people think the tower itself, with the clock face on the sides,
02:38
that that's Big Ben. I'm afraid not.
02:41
Big Ben is the name of the bell inside the tower.
02:46
We'll be heading past Buckingham Palace,
02:48
that is the most famed royal residence around the world.
02:51
And now we have our king there currently?
02:53
We have our king there as well.
02:55
You can normally tell via the flag on top of Buckingham Palace if he's in residence.
03:00
So fingers crossed whenever you turn up,
03:02
you might be able to see if he's in residence or not.
03:06
Thank you so much, Matthew, for today.
03:08
Thank you ever so much for coming. We're glad to have you.
03:10
I've had so much fun. Thanks.
03:11
Oh, brilliant. Take care.
03:14
Next, I'm checking into my hotel for my stay here in the city.
03:18
The Londoner is a super boutique hotel tucked just off Leicester Square.
03:23
It's the perfect place to call home while exploring the city.
03:26
The hotel's penthouse and signature suites are beautifully designed,
03:30
featuring generous living areas and breathtaking city views.
03:36
Today, I'm unwinding with a relaxing spa session at The Retreat,
03:40
the hotel's wellness space.
03:42
It features treatments that focus on calming the mind and refreshing the skin.
03:47
It's the kind of place where you can switch off completely, even if it's just for a short session.
03:53
Next door is Refuel, a superfood and wellness bar, serving nutritious dishes and smoothies.
03:59
It's the ideal spot to recharge after a treatment.
04:04
But for something a little more indulgent, I'm ending my day at Wickham's,
04:08
the hotel's signature restaurant, known for its beautifully styled interior and delicious Mediterranean dishes.
04:15
A truly delicious end to my first day in the city.
04:20
The next day, I'm exploring London in a true British icon, the Mini.
04:26
Behind the wheel is Matt Flynn, a born and bred Londoner who knows every shortcut and story this city has to offer.
04:34
The ideal guide for a drive through London's busy streets.
04:39
I've toured London's iconic spots in a bus.
04:42
Now it's time to visit some of its hidden gems in a classic car.
04:46
The first stop on our big adventure is Leek Street Arches,
04:50
a graffiti hub located underneath Waterloo train station.
04:53
So welcome to the Leek Street Arches.
04:55
This is London's only legal graffiti site.
04:59
I'm going to encourage you to go and have a walk up and down, take these markers, leave your own graffiti tag.
05:05
Basically, all the artwork you see here changes about every two weeks.
05:08
An artist will come down, spray something, someone else will come down two weeks later, cover it completely.
05:14
So the artwork is constantly changing.
05:16
So go and leave your mark, make it significant, see what you can do.
05:20
It will be staying forever.
05:23
Once a quiet underpass, this tunnel has become one of London's most colourful spots.
05:28
Stretching nearly 300 metres, it's completely open to the public.
05:34
Artists come here day and night to paint and experiment.
05:38
Even world-famous artists like Banksy have left their mark.
05:42
And today, I get to leave mine on the city I love.
05:46
Back in the mini, we head out into the city again.
05:49
London never sits still, and neither do we.
05:53
Our next stop takes us south of the river.
05:55
We're on our way to one of the city's best loved food markets, Borough Market.
06:01
So, welcome to Borough Market.
06:03
This is the oldest market in London.
06:05
It's been stood here for over a thousand years.
06:07
It's now a world-famous farmer's market with food coming from all over the world.
06:12
It has to be of the highest possible quality.
06:14
Thousands of tourists come from all over the world to sample the food here.
06:18
Walking through Borough Market is one of my favourite ways to explore London.
06:23
It's lively, colourful and full of things you can't resist trying.
06:28
There's everything here from olive oil and cheeses to fruit and vegetables.
06:33
It's truly a feast for the senses.
06:37
After exploring the market, we're back on the road again, taking in more of the city.
06:42
Travelling through this big city in a tiny car really gives you a different view of London.
06:47
It's been an epic experience.
06:49
But for now, my tour with Matt has come to an end.
06:53
Next up on my journey, I'm heading to one of London's most elegant walkways.
06:58
A place of beautiful window displays and refined luxury.
07:02
Here to tell me more about this historic spot is luxury retail expert, Trupti Shah.
07:08
Welcome to Burlington Arcade.
07:10
This is a place filled with history.
07:12
We are in the heart of Mayfair and there's 206 years of history that we're going to try and go to.
07:18
Burlington Arcade stretches nearly 200 metres
07:21
and houses around 40 shops.
07:24
These vintage stores stock everything from antique jewellery and bespoke fashion
07:29
to rare watches and modern British perfumery.
07:33
N Peel London has been part of Burlington Arcade for almost 90 years.
07:38
Known for its fine cashmere, it's one of the Arcade's longest standing names.
07:44
Our next stop takes us into the world of vintage watches.
07:48
Burlington Arcade is home to more than 3,000 vintage Rolex timepieces, making it one of the city's most impressive collections.
07:57
Across the walkway is another luxury knitwear boutique, full of heritage inspired clothing.
08:03
This is a family owned business, very special.
08:06
They are 228 years old.
08:09
Everything is made in Scotland and they also have a Royal Warrant from His Majesty King Charles.
08:17
The Royal Connection is something that runs throughout the Arcade.
08:21
And when it comes to designer luggage, this next store fits right in.
08:25
Founded in 1897, Globetrotter donates part of its profits to charities supported by the King.
08:32
After a fantastic royal infused tour.
08:35
I love it!
08:37
Full of fragrances and more.
08:39
Tripti and I settle down for a coffee in the Arcade's Boutique Café.
08:44
The perfect place to end our tour.
08:47
As my journey continues, I'm visiting C'est La Vie London, a stylish restaurant high above the city.
08:57
This dining spot is known for its bold Asian flavours and views of the capital.
09:04
I'm heading into their kitchen for a cooking masterclass with one of their executive chefs.
09:09
So what are we making here?
09:11
Oh, we make Wagyu Kyoza.
09:14
Yeah.
09:15
They are definitely my favourite.
09:17
Wagyu Kyoza are a gourmet variation of the traditional Japanese dumpling filled with marbled beef.
09:24
Ray shows me how to fill and seal the dumplings in the traditional way.
09:29
Good idea.
09:30
A little bit pinch.
09:32
Another pinch.
09:33
Another one.
09:35
Now it's my turn to give it a go.
09:38
So, I'll pick up one of these very delicate little sheets.
09:42
Is that one?
09:43
Okay.
09:44
I put it in my hand.
09:45
Wrapping around the sides.
09:48
And now it's all about the folding.
09:51
Folding dumplings looks easy, but there's a real technique to getting it just right.
09:57
With my quick training complete, it's time to try some flavours for myself.
10:01
There you go.
10:02
Enjoy a good selection of dishes that we have from C'est La Vie London.
10:06
Delicious.
10:07
And this looks extremely diverse for London.
10:09
People kind of come to London.
10:11
They're expecting that quintessentially British, but actually now this is British cuisine.
10:16
This is British.
10:17
Yes.
10:18
From our side, we've had a huge history of using spice across our cuisine for a number of
10:22
years.
10:23
And also, one of the things we have looked at is to use as much British produce as we can
10:27
see that accent of Asian influence as well, which really from our side, really say look
10:32
where C'est La Vie comes from.
10:33
The food here is exceptional.
10:35
Beautifully presented and full of flavour.
10:38
You can taste the mix of British and Asian ingredients.
10:41
A style that perfectly reflects the city's diversity.
10:45
After an incredible experience, it's time to see the city from a different perspective.
10:55
I'm grabbing an iconic black cab to my final destination.
10:59
There are so many different modes of transport in London.
11:02
I can't decide which one's my favourite, but the next one is definitely a little surprise.
11:08
Trapti from the Burlington Arcade has invited me to take a flight over the city.
11:14
The London Heliport is owned by the Rubin Brothers, who also own the Arcade.
11:19
Today, we're flying high above London.
11:22
A once in a lifetime experience, shared with a new friend.
11:26
And we can't help but take a few snaps to savour the moment.
11:31
London looks absolutely breathtaking from up here.
11:34
Its famous landmarks and the Thames River stretch out endlessly.
11:39
A view that reminds you just how big this city really is.
11:43
From whizzing around the city in a Mini Cooper to exploring the sights of London from the skies.
11:50
I can honestly say this trip has been unforgettable.
11:53
I can't wait for the next adventure.
11:55
I can't wait for the next adventure.
11:56
I can't wait for the next adventure.
