00:00Fashion, beauty, lifestyle, movies, film, whatever it is that you're passionate about and you're really into.
00:09It's really for the creatives, really.
00:10So it's a platform that I feel like we don't necessarily always have that encompasses every aspect of being a creative.
00:16And yes, it's just incredible.
00:18So what I've noted is that the creative is important.
00:23But what's important is consistency, repetition, and creating structures within your work.
00:30Angel, I first want to comment that your style is impeccable.
00:34We love the flowy outfits.
00:37You are in the business of fashion and we want to know, we want to know your journey.
00:43But we also want to know how do you go from having a very good personal style to now creating a brand that translates into revenue that's selling across continents.
00:54Maybe share a bit about your story.
01:00I think I'll start with what he has said, which is, talent is never enough.
01:13One of my favorite quotes is, hard work will always be talent when talent doesn't require you.
01:18And the truth is, in respect of how talented you are, how much effort goes down that you have, if you're not willing to do the hard work, if you're not willing to show up in a way that no one else shows up, if you're not willing to take it as a business,
01:32and the serious analysis, as opposed to being called the creative, you wouldn't necessarily go as far or your longevity will be very, very stifled.
01:42One of the reasons why I've been able to come this far, because I had a 9 to 5 before, I still wanted to quit my 9 to 5 to do this full time.
01:49And for me to quit my 9 to 5 in the sense that I somehow was doing some excellently well on my side job, that I could take that risk, right?
01:59I took the risk, and I started Style Connoisseur, or I pushed Style Connoisseur farther.
02:07One of the many ways that I was able to grow, and I tell people is that the reason I grew is because I worked 9 to 5.
02:15I knew structure, I knew going to work on time, I knew showing up on time, I knew presenting your project on time, I knew integrity, I knew what it meant to be somebody that people rely on,
02:28because there are other people that, you know, they have to give feedback to.
02:32And, I grew in the business because, not necessarily because of my title, my style, or my videos, I grew because I understood the work that needed to be,
02:44that I needed to be the person that I am today.
02:46Which means, there are some times that I tell people that I'm not just a creative, because, irrespective of how people view creatives,
02:52they're like, oh, we're so, somehow, we're scuddled, like this, like that.
02:56There are certain people that understand the nitty-gritty of the job.
02:59You have to show up on time, you have to deliver on time, you have to shoot on time, you have to make up on time, you have to appear everything on time,
03:06so every other person's work isn't like it because of you.
03:09And, for that in itself, tells me everything that I needed to know to grow.
03:14And, I knew all of that because I had a 9 to 5.
03:17It's never really about the amount of talents that you have, or the amount of style that you have, especially as a style that's right, sir.
03:26Everything is momentary.
03:27I would tell people, even for social media noise, it's momentary, right?
03:30After that one post or that one viral video, what next?
03:33You're only as good as your last best work.
03:35It's just what it is.
03:36After they talk about the greatness that is you in that moment, what next?
03:41You always have to keep undoing yourself.
03:43And how do you keep undoing yourself?
03:45It takes a lot of discipline.
03:47It takes you understanding that it's not about the glitz and the glam and taking pictures and looking fly.
03:53It means that sometimes you have to be up at 2am when everyone else is asleep.
03:58It means that sometimes you have to be telling your guys behind the scenes,
04:02you need to get this content out.
04:03The client is on my neck.
04:04You have to be on top of things.
04:06You're not like, oh, but they said, you're not, you're not, you're just not doing anything.
04:11You're not pushing anyone, right?
04:13So at the end of the day, the most important part of the work is understanding discipline, integrity, and hard work.
04:19Because if you don't have these three things, there's only as far as you go in the industry.
04:23Nobody cares in 10 years about my style.
04:26It's just what it is.
04:27There will be way more stylish girls, way more fashionable girls, way fancier people.
04:32I'm probably older and not even care about what I'm doing right now.
04:35But what will take me thus far is that I already have the, I already have the knowledge
04:40to grow more things that has nothing to do with just taking pictures or just looking beautiful
04:46or just showing up for events because of the work and the amount of effort that I have put in myself right now.
04:52So, yeah.
04:55Pretty much, like I said, Entertainment Week Africa, it's pretty much a combination of different industries,
05:00different people from different fields and people coming together to be able to share their ideas
05:06and also share their experiences to people.
05:09And obviously, the event is not exclusive.
05:11The event is open to people who want to be part of it and who want to participate in it.
05:15So, obviously, you have individuals who are either aspiring to be in positions of influence
05:22or people who want to be great and do a lot of great things.
05:26Because, you know, you find them here and you find them learning as well.
05:29You know, so, it's not just, I don't want people, I don't want people to just live with the fact that,
05:33oh, they say it's Entertainment Week Africa, they feel like it's some, some party or some this and that.
05:38No.
05:39It's pretty much a week of activities that are lined up from fashion to music, so, to beauty, to everything, to sports.
05:45So, all your interests are here.
05:47So, it is brilliant.
05:48It's a brilliant initiative.
05:50And, like I said, Africa is there.
05:52So, it's not exclusive to Nigeria.
05:53You find a lot of collaboration.
05:55A lot of people coming in from different diasporas coming in to here to be a part of this.
06:00Because, guess what?
06:01The platform is amazing.
06:02So, yeah, I think, I think, I think it's a brilliant initiative for everybody to came to.
06:07Yeah.
06:08It's negative, but it's very realistic.
06:10Um, consistency is love for everything.
06:13We say consistency, be consistent, be consistent.
06:16You've done it for 30 years, change my reality.
06:19Do something else.
06:20People say, oh, consistency, you've been a rapper for 10 years.
06:23No, no single EP.
06:25You've been a, you've been a make-up artist for 20 years.
06:28You've not actually there.
06:29Try something else.
06:31Again, I, I see this again.
06:32I see a lot of models.
06:34Especially in the gardening industry.
06:36Same models who have been working wrong ways for years.
06:39Every time you see them, they don't have cars, they don't have, they barely have anything.
06:45But they tell you one thing will break through.
06:47One thing will break through.
06:48One thing will break through.
06:49One thing will, let's keep consistent.
06:50You don't want to be consistent doing things that are unrealistic.
06:54You don't want to be consistent doing things that, you have, if you have, for me personally,
06:58if you have done it for 10 years, either you re-strategize or change.
07:03If you have been an actor for 15 years, you never blow, go and look for a job to do.
07:10Try to do something.
07:12Don't say, I want to be consistent.
07:13I want to be an actor, consistent, and you've not achieved anything.
07:16I always tell people, your, your personality is your currency.
07:20Your, your, again, thank God for social media.
07:24You have no excuse.
07:25You've done makeup for 10 years.
07:27You've done, maybe that is not your opponent.
07:30That is just what it is.
07:31I don't want to be consistent.
07:32So stop being consistent and change.
07:33But consistency is still based on whatever you choose to do.
07:36If you, if you choose to do it, if you just choose to do it.
07:38If you choose to do it, it doesn't work for you.
07:41It's consistent regardless.
07:42If you decide to do, should make it, and it doesn't work for you.
07:44You can't do slick-banging, and make it for us.
07:45That is why I say change.
07:46It doesn't have to be consistent for every view.
07:48every field it doesn't have to be one particular thing that is that is what that is what i'm saying
07:52and what this consistency thing is very very it's a very dangerous word a lot of people don't know
07:58because they tell us consistency consistency consistency you're broke
08:03consistency consistency consistency
08:18i am a realist i am a realist
08:37go and look for a job
08:40i feel like a lot of people expected that myself and abuta would have a lot of issues
08:51as soon as we got on the show but you know what you said i don't want to use that more like we're
08:56sisters yeah yeah yeah we got it we're sisters and we can actually collaborate rather compete and
09:02it never really crossed my mind to maybe look at what somebody's wearing i'm like oh i need to do
09:08better we are all unique in our own way i think i remember the day we were going for we're in ghana
09:13we're going for your events we're going for your events where um and carla was already there and
09:22you made a statement in the bus we're like this group i'm talking about laura laura i'm talking to
09:28you face me you made a statement in the in the post that day like this is the first season that we the
09:35ladies we don't have to look at each other uh to check ourselves like we don't have to wear couture
09:43we don't have to try to impress anybody and she feels very comfortable and i think i really love
09:48that when she made that statement so i don't think there's any competition here we just collaborate
09:56competition is the new collaboration
10:00all right i have two final questions and i will be able to take two questions from members of the
10:04audience your question has to be good enough for me to take it so we will screen the questions
10:08right but this next question is if you could redefine beauty for the next generation of african
10:16we know what beauty or you know the definition of beauty now if you could redefine it for the next
10:21generation of african women how would you define it for me i'm so sorry for me i'll say beauty is you
