00:01Nancy is a guard's daughter.
00:03One day she was working on Skarloey with some polish and a rag.
00:07Skarloey was snoozing happily, but Nancy wanted to talk.
00:11Wake up, lazybones, your brass is filthy, aren't you ashamed?
00:15No, yawned Skarloey, you're just an old fusspot.
00:20And Skarloey closed his eyes.
00:23He was thinking about his friend, Reneas, and all the good times they had shurred together
00:27before Reneas went away to be mended.
00:38Nancy interrupted again.
00:40Don't you want to look nice for when Reneas comes home?
00:43Skarloey wasn't sleepy anymore.
00:45What?
00:46When?
00:47Soon, Daddy told me.
00:48I'm going now, she said.
00:49Nancy, stop!
00:50Do I really look nice?
00:52Please polish me again.
00:54Now who's an old fusspot, laughed Nancy, and set to work once more.
01:02Duncan was jealous.
01:03Aren't you going to polish me too?
01:05Sorry, not today.
01:07I'm going now.
01:08I'm helping the refreshment lady this afternoon.
01:11We must get the Isis ready for the passengers.
01:13Never mind, Duncan, she said.
01:17But Duncan did mind.
01:19It isn't fair, he complained.
01:22Peter Sam gets a special funnel.
01:23Sir Handel gets special wheels.
01:26Passengers get Isis.
01:27But I'm not even polished.
01:30Of course this wasn't true, but Duncan enjoyed complaining.
01:33He became sulkier still.
01:40That afternoon there was bad news from up the line.
01:44One of Skarloey's coaches has come off the rails, called Duncan's driver.
01:49We'll have to take the workman there right away.
01:52All this extra work, grumbled Duncan.
01:54It wears an engine out.
01:56Rubbish.
01:57Come on.
02:06The derailed coach was in the middle of Skarloey's train, so he had gone on to the top station
02:11with his front coaches.
02:15Duncan shunted the work's train into the sidings and left the workman to sort out the mess.
02:21Then he brought the passengers and the rear coaches home.
02:27He sulked all the way.
02:34I get no rest, I get no rest, he muttered.
02:39Duncan made the journey very difficult.
02:43He was short of steam, so his driver waited a while in the hope of raising more.
02:49But Duncan wouldn't try.
02:53We'll keep our passengers waiting, said his driver.
02:56Duncan was gross.
02:58You always think about the passengers and never about me.
03:05It wasn't long before Duncan built up enough steam to set off again.
03:17But he was still very grumpy and cross.
03:21I'm overworked and I won't stand it, Mr. Paul.
03:28At last they reached the viaduct near the station.
03:31Come on, Duncan, cajoled his driver.
03:34One more effort and you'll have a rest and a drink at the station.
03:40Then Duncan was very rude.
03:43Keep your old station.
03:47I'm staying here.
03:49And he did too.
03:52Scar Loey had to haul Duncan and his train all the way to the platform.
04:04The passengers were furious.
04:07They told everyone what a bad railway it was.
04:11That night, the fat controller spoke to Duncan.
04:18No passengers means no polish.
04:22No polish means no passengers, Duncan muttered to himself.
04:26He still has a lot to learn, doesn't he?
