Jennifer Lawrence Confirms What We Suspected All Along About Leonardo DiCaprio's On-Set Behavior
Transcript
00:00Would you want to be stuck in a locked car with Leonardo DiCaprio?
00:04According to Jennifer Lawrence, the answer is maybe not.
00:08You know, I had a feeling.
00:09Jennifer Lawrence is returning to the silver screen with Don't Look Up,
00:13the upcoming Netflix dark comedy by Adam McKay,
00:16and she's back to revealing hilarious anecdotes with her co-stars, including Leonardo DiCaprio.
00:23Lawrence, who was once named world's highest-paid actress in 2016 by Forbes,
00:29made herself a household name when she portrayed Katniss Everdeen in the blockbuster The Hunger
00:34Games film series, and later won Best Actress for her role in Silver Linings Playbook.
00:40However, in recent years, she stepped away from the spotlight for personal reasons.
00:44The actor recently told Vanity Fair that she had gotten sick of herself as a Hollywood star
00:50and felt disconnected from the film projects she took on. She told The Mag, quote,
00:55I was not pumping out the quality that I should have."
00:58In her time away from the limelight, Lawrence married her husband, Cook Moroney, in October 2019,
01:04and the couple is now expecting their first baby together. Following her return to acting in Don't
01:10Look Up, Lawrence is back to her old ways of telling it like it is while doing press — baby bump and all.
01:17During an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Lawrence spilled some major tea about working
01:22with co-stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Timothee Chalamet. In particular, the star dished about filming a
01:29scene in a car with the two actors. Some would consider that the experience of a lifetime,
01:34but Lawrence joked that it was the most annoying day of her life.
01:38Those two guys were annoying?
01:39They drove me crazy that day.
01:42According to Lawrence, Chalamet was apparently over-eager to be out of the house filming in
01:47his first scene of the film, while DiCaprio spent his time over-explaining a song playing in the car.
01:53I just remember being in absolute misery that day.
01:57So being with those two guys is awful?
01:59It was hell.
02:00Lawrence was also the cause of some other unique experiences on the set of Don't Look Up.
02:06Speaking in an interview with Vanity Fair, she discussed her character, Kate, who wears nose
02:10rings. Jennifer Lawrence didn't get her nose pierced for the role, but maybe she should have
02:15considered it. She described the nature of the nose rings in the interview, saying,
02:20"...one just kind of hangs in. One is a magnet. And many, many times I accidentally inhaled said
02:27magnet and had to spit it out in front of Leonardo DiCaprio." And while Jennifer Lawrence might have
02:32joked that it was, hell, working with a Hollywood heartthrob like Leonardo DiCaprio, she has gone
02:37on the record to defend him, too. According to The Guardian, despite all of the debates over equal
02:42pay, Lawrence actually defended the larger paycheck DiCaprio received for his work on Don't Look Up.
02:49DiCaprio reportedly received $30 million for his role in the film, while Lawrence was right behind
02:55him at $25 million. Explaining The Gap, Lawrence said that numbers are numbers and that her co-star
03:02has a better track record when it comes to viewership and ticket sales. She told Vanity Fair, quote,
03:08"...Leo brings in more box office than I do. I'm extremely fortunate and happy with my deal."
03:14However, she also added,
03:16"...in other situations, what I have seen, and I'm sure other women in the workforce have seen as well,
03:22is that it's extremely uncomfortable to inquire about equal pay. And if you do question something
03:27that appears unequal, you're told it's not gender disparity, but they can't tell you what exactly
03:33it is."
03:34But then again, this isn't the first time that Lawrence has spoken about the gender pay gap in
03:39Hollywood. Back in 2015, Jennifer Lawrence wrote an essay in Lena Dunham's newsletter,
03:44Lenny Letter, about Hollywood's problem when it comes to equal pay across genders.
03:49She admitted that she felt mad at herself — and not the industry — when she found out that she
03:55was getting paid less than some of her male co-stars. Lawrence was paid less than her male co-stars in
04:01the 2015 hit film American Hustle. But, according to her, that was only because she had yet to learn
04:07how to fight for herself and her self-worth. She said in an interview with The Guardian,
04:12"...I failed as a negotiator because I gave up early. I didn't want to keep fighting over
04:17millions of dollars that, frankly, due to two franchises, I don't need."
04:22But she didn't let that stop her when it came to future negotiations. As she put it,
04:27I'm over trying to find the adorable way to state my opinion and still be likable. F — that.
04:33I put out the fire. The fire is out.
