00:00Internet, I've talked a lot about hacking over the past few years.
00:04Challenges, strategy, all kinds of little ways to solve a problem, to get ahead,
00:09to find an advantage, and maybe even win a million dollars in the process.
00:14But through it all, one thing I haven't talked about hacking is the meta of the show itself.
00:20Hacking the survivor of Survivor.
00:23Okay, so when I talk about strategy, it's ways to win the game.
00:27When I talk about challenges, it's ways to win a challenge.
00:31But what I'll be talking about here is ways that players used aspects of the show
00:36beyond these elements to get ahead that you might not notice or remember or think much of at first
00:43glance. Just, you know, tiny details outside the realm of the obvious, from camp life to fire making
00:49to even using the producer's rules against them. Here are five times Survivor players
00:56hack Survivor.
00:59So the first step is to create a completely new personality and say the most outlandish things
01:04to draw the attention of the casting department. I mean, it worked for Banu, right? Oh, that's just
01:10who he is. Well, it worked. The first big time hack that I want to talk about is something I don't
01:17think can be taken advantage of anymore. Last I checked, at least from what I've heard,
01:21and it all has to do with how the producers created this rule way back in the day where players could
01:28bring personal items with them on the show. Only one, nothing much, and it did have to pass an
01:35inspection, but it really just could be anything your heart desired. A magic eight ball, golf clubs,
01:41playing cards. One guy brought a skateboard, another brought war paint. James on Heroes vs.
01:47Villains brought his two idols from when he was voted out. Cat on Blood vs. Water brought a picture
01:53of Kim Spradlin. And I've talked a whole bunch about how Vesepia brought a poetry book that she
01:59would later use to win the final four challenge of the season, a winning move that would secure her
02:05the million dollars. These luxury items, as they're called, are often quite random and useless beyond
02:12providing some creature comfort. But not always. Take, for example, in season two, The Australian
02:17Outback, how Colby Donaldson asked if he could bring a Texan flag with him. He was a proud Texan
02:23and he wanted to show it off to the world. The producers gave him the green light. Why not?
02:28It's just a flag. And then they realized that Colby took advantage of their hospitality to find an
02:34advantage. They say everything's bigger in Texas, and that is definitely the case here,
02:39as Colby brought a massive, hefty flag that was so big it could double as a tarp. Indeed,
02:47Colby actually went out of his way to commission a flag with divots in it so it could be legitimately
02:53used as a covering for their shelter. And it worked pretty damn well too, as anytime you check the
02:59Ogakor tribe camp, you might notice a giant Texas flag. Heck, later in the season, Jeff goes to the
03:06tribe's camp to barter with them to give the tribe more amenities because they were starving and
03:11mismanaged their portions and he traded them for the tarp and he even mentions wanting to take Colby's
03:18luxury item. Come on, Jeff. I know you're from Kansas, but let the man have a roof. Colby, his luxury item
03:24was the Texan flag, which is great because it serves as the tarp that covers us and blocks us from the wind
03:31in the sun. I really did bring the flag to serve as shelter, but, you know, don't get me wrong.
03:36When I wake up in the morning, there's two things I'm thankful for. I'm thankful I'm alive and I'm
03:40thankful I'm a Texan. You've got 13 days left, and I don't think you're going to make it. So what happened
03:44with the rice? I mean, why are you out? I mean, we just weren't careful with our rations. You know,
03:49my role is a giver and a taker. Nothing comes cheap. I have enough rice to last you your last two
03:58weeks here. Shelter versus food. It's one or the other. Your tarps and that Texas flag. That's what I
04:06want. I mean, that's a no-brainer, and I'm talking about my personal out of here. I have no problem
04:10getting it up. The tarps and that big old Texas flag, engineered to be a tarp.
04:18Take care of that tree as well. When it comes to players bending the rules to get ahead,
04:23look no further than one season later in Survivor Africa, where we have a quick scene at the start
04:30of the season where both tribes are struggling to start a fire. And in case you, like, missed the
04:35memo, a fire making is a quintessential aspect of literally surviving out in the wild.
04:40Don't think I really need to explain why. And pretty much every season of the show,
04:45even as of today, usually focuses on how someone was able to accomplish it. Rubbing sticks together,
04:51banging rocks, meditating like you're a firebender. Anything goes, and we've seen it all. On season 14
04:58Fiji, we saw a player use their glasses to create some heat. Although I have heard through the grapevine
05:04that may have been assisted by the producers for a cool TV moment. But what I don't think was
05:09manipulated was what happened to the Samburu tribe of Africa. For context, each tribe is always given
05:15a medical kit of some sort. It usually contains sunscreen, tampons, you know, like all the
05:21necessary things to not straight up burn to a crisp or potentially die. And in the case of Africa,
05:27they also gave these players a little telescope. This was kind of random, but then again, they were in
05:34the middle of nowhere in Kenya surrounded by a bush camp with actual locals armed with guns to protect
05:40the players from the wildlife. And what were the players given? A little telescope. Kim Powers quickly
05:46realized this was going to be pretty useless in the scheme of things. So instead, she disassembled it
05:52and passed it off to Silas, whereupon he used it to focus fire the sun and get an ember going. It was
05:59pretty genius and clever to see a player just take what they were given by the producers and basically
06:04MacGyver it into something far more essential.
06:06The fire is not for warmth with everyone who would think of right away or security right away, but the water has to be boiled three to five minutes. It has to be purified for us to drink.
06:25It was getting dark and we still kept trying and trying even when it was dark to try to get the fire going. And that was, you know, a big frustration.
06:33If you don't boil your water out here, you end up with what they call amoebic dysentery, which basically has you puking and crapping your guts out.
06:40It doesn't sound possible, but we could go another whole day without it. That's what I just said. That's what I said.
06:52You know, we may be a little dehydrated, but it's not like we're going to die or something.
06:57Linda just decided to open the medical kit to see what was in there. And in the medical kit, there just happened to be a telescope.
07:04But I unscrewed the telescope, pulled out the lens and Silas was right there. And I was like, Silas, isn't there something we can do with this?
07:11Oh my God. Okay, let's do we have a little fire?
07:15Shh. No, no, no. Don't like, let's not jinx this. Let's just get this damn thing smoldering.
07:18Do we need to put this on top of it or set this upside down on it? How do you do it?
07:22Oh my God. Get Frank in this, guys. It's done.
07:25You guys, come here. We got fire.
07:27Great, great.
07:30Get down from the side. Don't get your face directly over.
07:33Come on, Frankie.
07:35Get down from the side.
07:47But more than that, I want to talk about a couple of players who didn't just build a shelter but took it to the next level.
07:55In case you didn't know, players are briefed before they go on the show about what to look out for,
08:00which flora and fauna to avoid, and also how to build sort of a shelter.
08:06Not a great shelter, mind you, but something serviceable enough.
08:10Again, the producers don't want you to die out there, believe it or not.
08:13But once in a blue moon or really just like twice ever, I think,
08:19we get a player who knows what to do with the elements around them.
08:24Like, they know how to make living in these locations easier for everyone in small and big ways.
08:30The two players I want to point out are Bob Crowley, the winner of season 17 Gabon,
08:35who was described as the forever Boy Scout by his tribe.
08:39The very first thing we see Bob do once he gets to camp is start building with what's around him.
08:45He climbs up on the shelter and starts patching the roof.
08:48He starts building benches and he basically speed runs as if he's like 40 years younger and grew up playing Minecraft.
08:54He surveys the land, he grabs some sticks, and he gets to work.
08:58No wonder he is cited as the guy who made the best fake idol in the history of the show.
09:03He one-upped the art department.
09:05Oh, I don't think that's a good idea.
09:09Okay, let's pass these up now.
09:11We gotta work, layer it up. Okay, okay.
09:14Just give me a piece like a foot long.
09:16Bob, he's totally like, he gets it together, he's got the camp running really smoothly.
09:20To me, it's common sense. I come from Maine. You know, that's what we do in Maine.
09:24I don't like to spend money on stuff, so I tinker.
09:26If I don't know how to do it, I go to the library and get the book, look it up and go do it.
09:30I'm gonna make something like this when I get home.
09:32By the way, where'd you get this rope?
09:34We don't give you guys anything.
09:36Well, I take stuff.
09:40And then we get Wendell Holland, the winner of season 36 Ghost Island.
09:44Go figure, both these guys won.
09:46Wendell is a furniture designer outside of the show.
09:49He actually got his own show doing this on TV,
09:51and he knew how to create stuff with the natural resources around him.
09:55In both seasons he played on, Wendell was the guy who made camp life so much better.
10:01He not only spruced up the shelter, gave it a nice roof, a sturdy foundation,
10:05basically turned it into a penthouse, but he also built benches, chairs, hammocks, crab,
10:11and fish traps, and even this like little hoop game to have fun passing the time.
10:16He said that if he could bring any one luxury item with him to the island, it would be a chainsaw.
10:21You know, to speed all this up, he even talked about toning his craftsmanship down when he returned on season 40,
10:28because he didn't want to be seen as such a big threat for how much he provided around camp.
10:33He wanted to build connections with the people, not the connecting beams for the shelter.
10:38I just, I find it impressive how these players are able to improve the quality of life of everyone
10:45with little maneuvers around camp, using the land to their advantage,
10:48hearkening back to the oldest days of the show.
10:51Survive the elements and then turn them into a luxury resort.
10:55When did you start doing furniture design?
10:57My pop started me out building actually, because he had me doing like drywall in the basement
11:03and stuff like that growing up.
11:04And then we come find 6, 7, 8, 9, 47 crabs in here.
11:08I like the number.
11:09And we eat them.
11:10I went to UPenn Law, top 10 law school, but I wasn't where I wanted to be.
11:15So I followed my passion.
11:17I took off the suit and now I'm a freelance furniture designer.
11:21So I am more than I appear.
11:23You could do like log cabin style and it raises it a little easier.
11:27People know me as somebody that knows how to build.
11:29But this season, I was trying to come out here and not build as much.
11:33I wanted to build relationships.
11:34I didn't necessarily want to build the whole shelter again.
11:37I think we're good.
11:38We'll hammer a stake in right here and this isn't going anywhere.
11:40Made by Wendel Designs?
11:41Something like that.
11:42What'd you make of Wendel?
11:44I'm trying to make a ring.
11:48And then I'm going to suspend it by a rope.
11:50Yeah.
11:51And then I'm going to put a hook on a tree and we're going to swing it from one tree
11:55to hook on that.
11:56It's like a game.
11:57So I'm a resourceful guy.
11:59So out here, it comes natural for me to be able to find random things and put them together
12:03to make something useful and fun.
12:07While that's technically four out of the five times advertised in the video title, I want
12:13to bring up two more moments where players got crafty and outfoxed the producers to gain
12:18an advantage.
12:19The first is from season 31, Cambodia Second Chance, where we saw PG Law bend the rules to
12:26her favor by cleverly crafting her wardrobe to provide her tribe with all sorts of essentials.
12:32Because every player has a wardrobe, a set of clothes they get to pick before they go on
12:37the show.
12:38And then the producers step in, curate it and basically pick out what they think you're
12:41going to look best for with what they're trying to get.
12:44Sometimes the producers give players clothes they think will fit better or look better or
12:48just fit the coloration.
12:50PG didn't know what her final wardrobe would look like.
12:52So she actually got extra creative.
12:55What did she do?
12:56She fastened flint to buttons on a couple of her cardigans, more than one, not knowing
13:01which cardigan she would be given when she was marooned in the premiere.
13:05The flint was hidden, sewn inside the seams, and she concealed it with twine, another useful
13:10resource that she could use either for kindling or fishing.
13:13But that's not all.
13:14She also wore a necklace with a serrated edge medallion in the middle, something she could
13:19use to help start a fire.
13:20And then to top it off, she wore earrings in the shape of fish hooks.
13:25And she was able to sneak a lot of this past the production team.
13:28According to PG, when the producers found out about this, they said that they were impressed
13:32with how clever she was and they wanted to air this on the show, but ultimately chose not
13:38to so as to not encourage future players to do the same.
13:42However, with past players, we also saw the ever so infamous Richard Hatch potentially
13:49wins PG to do what she does on Cambodia, because on Season 8 All Stars, Hatch pulled off a little
13:56maneuver to secure his tribe fire the moment they hit the beach.
14:02What did he do?
14:03Did he bring a flamethrower?
14:05No.
14:06He smuggled in matches.
14:08Yeah, starting a fire is a heck of a lot easier with a bunch of matches.
14:12Isn't that right, Sundra and Becky?
14:14But then how did Hatch smuggle those matches in, you might ask?
14:19Well, he put them in a little vial, and then he put the little vial in places we're not
14:25going to talk about.
14:27But Hatch might.
14:28Yeah, I think I could start the fire without even blinking.
14:42But they don't need to know that.
14:45I'm fine.
14:46I'm not even hungry.
14:47If somebody wanted to bring something into Survivor, perhaps they could do so.
14:54Will we ever know if I actually put matches in a container, stuck that container up my
15:04butt?
15:05Did I make a fire?
15:06This is kind of crazy talk on one hand.
15:09But even if it were true, I would not be talking about it.
15:15Because it's one of those interesting myths, perhaps, or truths, that has people wondering.
15:25So let's keep wondering.
15:27And there we have it.
15:28Five, six, seven times Survivor players hacked Survivor.
15:33They took any maneuver they could to gain an advantage on the show.
15:37And sometimes breaking a rule along the way.
15:40But hey, you know, don't ask for permission.
15:42Ask for forgiveness.
15:43And let me know what you think about these moments and any others that I didn't talk
15:47about that might fit the bill.
15:49A huge thank you to my patrons for all your support year round.
15:52Thank you all for watching.
15:53I hope you enjoyed the video.
15:55Don't forget to learn how to fasten a ladder correctly before you climb it on your way up
15:59and out.
16:00And I will see you in the next one.
16:02Once I get medically evacuated over some breadfruit.
16:06Tony's ladder was hilarious.
16:09It's so unsafe.
16:11It's so ridiculous.
16:13See ya.
16:15Tony, are you sure?
16:18I can probably climb up there.
16:19You want to?
16:20I'll try.
16:21Oh my god, I see.
16:22Look at them.
16:23They look like Morgan's boom.
16:24Oh my goodness.
16:25Oh my god.
16:27Did you break it?
16:29Oh, are you okay?
16:31Yeah, I'm cool.
16:32That's it.
16:33You're not going back up.
16:34Oh my god.
16:35Oh my god.
16:36Oh my god.
16:37I'll break my ass for papaya jenny day.
16:39Hey.
16:40Hey.
