00:00Bonjour!
00:02They've dreamed of leaving it all behind.
00:05Look at this for you, Brett.
00:06Can't believe we're here.
00:08Yay!
00:09Stunning.
00:10Now, the chance to make it real begins.
00:13Welcome to the first baby breakfast.
00:15We've got a guest arriving early.
00:17Lovely.
00:18Across three weeks, six couples will fight for the prize of a lifetime.
00:23Walking away with the keys to this extraordinary B&B in the heart of the French countryside.
00:32But only one couple will take them.
00:37Who wins this stunning prize lies in the hands of four expert judges from the world of hospitality.
00:45Eva Jonat, who's inspected hundreds of hotels for the prestigious AA.
00:51The competition has been so tough this week.
00:53Nicola Cross.
00:55Oh!
00:56Snogging swans!
00:57Elite inspector for the exclusive B&B guide Sore Days.
01:03Slightly chaotic, as they say, up north.
01:06And award-winning B&B owners Andrew John and Brennan Street.
01:11Nobody's perfect.
01:12Yeah.
01:13Well, nobody's perfect.
01:17Whoa!
01:18Ready?
01:19Hurry up.
01:20Come on.
01:21Look at her.
01:22Stop asking me questions.
01:23I've buzzed it all up again.
01:24Well, you haven't buzzed anything.
01:25I'm flagging.
01:26Oh, God.
01:27Do they have a problem?
01:29Not sure if hospitality's for them.
01:34Totes for them.
01:41The Dordogne, one of France's most cherished inland escapes.
01:46Its sun-drenched valleys and storybook villages draw more than 3 million visitors a year.
01:52Countless B&Bs vie for their custom, and soon it will be the battleground for three couples fighting to win their own.
02:02Touching down at Bergerac Airport with their eyes on the prize of a lifetime.
02:11Winning a B&B would be the most fabulous thing in our lives that would ever happen.
02:15We're hungry for it.
02:16We will throw in blood, sweat and tears for this.
02:18Yeah.
02:19There's no stopping us.
02:21We have grafted all our lives to get what we've got.
02:25This opportunity has come along, and we are absolutely going to smash it.
02:31We've had lots of ups and downs, and life has been a bit of a roller coaster.
02:35I think it will be a fresh start.
02:36A fresh start.
02:37A real big challenge.
02:40Game face is on.
02:42The first chance to size up the competition.
02:46How much are you?
02:47Michelle and Steve.
02:48Hiya Steve.
02:49Hi Roy.
02:50How you doing?
02:51Where have you come from?
02:52Barnsley.
02:54Can you not tell with his posh accent?
02:56Oh, lovely.
02:57I'd say well, I have no idea where that is.
03:00It's a fabulous place.
03:02I'm sure it is.
03:05As well as being ambassadors for their hometown of Barnsley,
03:08Michelle runs a knitting business, and Steve is a builder.
03:13Me and Michelle's been together roughly 45 years,
03:17and we've been married 40 years this September.
03:21And it...
03:23She grew on me.
03:26What do you mean, grew on you? Like a flower!
03:30At the moment, our lives are quite separate.
03:32Steve goes off and does his job.
03:34I do my job.
03:36However, this is an absolute new venture.
03:39It gives us more time as a couple together.
03:43And that's what we're looking forward to.
03:45Yes, to grow even stronger.
03:47Oh, I like that.
03:48I'm Rob.
03:53Hi, Rob.
03:54I'm Jackie, everybody.
03:55Hi.
03:56So what do you do then?
03:57Sport scientists.
03:58What's that?
03:59So I work with many athletes on their strength and conditioning, nutrition.
04:02Oh, I think I could do it one-to-one.
04:03Jackie and Rob from South East London are looking for a new direction.
04:04It feels like the right time is the time to put us first now.
04:16You know, we've spent the last 30 years putting the kids first.
04:20Now it's time for us.
04:22Four years ago, I had a complete heart block,
04:24and I was fitted with an emergency pacemaker.
04:28So it was totally out of the blue
04:29and it totally changed our whole world upside down.
04:33It makes you realise how fragile life is
04:35and how quickly things can change overnight.
04:37Now it just seems the right time to actually go and do something.
04:41An adventure.
04:42Yeah, I like that.
04:43The next chapter of our life.
04:44The next chapter of our life.
04:45Yeah.
04:46Of our middle-aged life.
04:47Yeah.
04:48I'm Roy.
04:49Roy.
04:50Nicola.
04:51Nicola.
04:52What do you do? What's your job?
04:53I'm a chef.
04:54Oh, oh, are you?
04:55How'd that? How'd that?
04:56You're the competition, are you?
04:57Don't be afraid.
04:58Don't be terrified.
04:59Yeah.
05:00Yeah.
05:03Originally from Northern Ireland,
05:05Nicola and Roy currently live in Paynton in Devon.
05:09I've been a pastry chef probably 30-odd years.
05:12I work in a little coffee shop in Brixham.
05:15I work in a sheltered housing scheme for over 55s.
05:20I really enjoy my job but I'd like a change,
05:23I'd like to move on and do something completely different.
05:26So it's time to do what we've always wanted, run a B&B.
05:30We're not looking for an easier life
05:32because running a business is not an easier life at all.
05:35We just love the idea of having the challenge
05:37and doing it ourselves and not for other people.
05:39Yeah.
05:40And we will eat, sleep and drink this.
05:45Who are we waiting for? Does anybody know?
05:47Yeah.
05:48I don't know.
05:49There are just two more people to board the coach
05:52as the hosts are about to meet their first judges.
05:57We have a award-winning bed and breakfast in Europe
06:00that's been operating for seven years.
06:03Top 1% of all boutique hotels in the world.
06:06The hospitality trade is no stranger to us.
06:11Welcome to the hosts and we will be your judges.
06:16I can't express enough how much of an opportunity this is.
06:21We had to work 15 solid years running the businesses that we did
06:26to raise the funds to be able to do what they could win.
06:29Yeah.
06:30It's life-changing for one lucky couple.
06:33We will be judging you, but we'll be guiding you along,
06:37giving you hints, setting you challenges,
06:39but there are no problems, only solutions.
06:43Absolutely.
06:44Yeah.
06:45And we're off.
06:50The hosts are en route to their new homes and businesses
06:54for the week.
06:55Each couple would take charge of a rental property
06:58in the French countryside,
07:00all within 30 minutes of each other.
07:02Each comes with four bedrooms, three bathrooms,
07:07a breakfast dining area and a fully equipped kitchen.
07:12But there's a twist.
07:14Every property has been stripped of bed linen and amenities.
07:18It's up to the hosts to add the finishing touches
07:21to turn them into the perfect B&B.
07:24Over the week, they'll welcome guests
07:26and be judged on their presentation, food, cleanliness
07:30and, above all, their hosting skills.
07:34What makes you guys think you're different to anybody else?
07:39Oh, we're certainly different.
07:42Our graft is absolutely there, we know that.
07:44Sure.
07:45But do you know what?
07:46For us, it's me and Steve.
07:49Steve's...
07:50Well, he's a builder, but he's also...
07:52I do a little bit of magic.
07:54He does a lot of magic.
07:55Oh, wow. Loads of magic.
07:57So you can keep them entertained as well.
07:59Oh, honestly, it'd just blow you away.
08:01What do you bring to this competition?
08:03We're very interested, obviously, in nutrition.
08:06We're both qualified in different kinds of massage,
08:10which we would like to offer, and to offer retreats.
08:13What a lovely place to do it in.
08:16We know exactly how important food is to the bed and breakfast.
08:20What would your slightly different take on a breakfast be?
08:24We have a few things up our sleeves that we want to try out.
08:27So, do you want to tell us what that is right now?
08:29No, not really.
08:31What, too much competition?
08:33Too much competition, yeah.
08:34Wise competitors.
08:36The hosts have made their first impressions,
08:41but soon they'll be under the scrutiny of all the judges.
08:47Only they have the power to decide whose life will be changed forever.
08:51We're looking for owners who are confident and they're people lovers.
08:58They've got to be people lovers.
09:00I think people underestimate how much work goes into it.
09:04It's not just about opening your door to some stranger
09:06and just let them sleep in the bed.
09:08It's about making a warm and, you know, inviting environment.
09:13It's the owners who are the most important part of your stay.
09:18It's going to be one of the toughest weeks of their lives.
09:21There will be tears, there will be tantrums,
09:24but it is going to be so worth it.
09:27As night falls, the hosts finally arrive at their B&Bs.
09:34Amazing.
09:36Oh, look at that.
09:37Who would have thought that was down that dark path?
09:41That's so good.
09:43Oh, my God.
09:47Oh, wow, Steve, look at this.
09:51It's all right, kitchen.
09:53It's their first chance to plan
09:55how they'll put their vision in place.
09:58Take a pew.
10:00Oh, I love it.
10:02What's a cooker like?
10:03What's a cooker like?
10:04It's a little chef thing, isn't it?
10:06It's a cooker.
10:10Oh, this is lovely.
10:12This is absolutely amazing.
10:14Beautiful.
10:16This is nice.
10:17Yeah.
10:18Oh, Steve.
10:19We make this look special.
10:22Tonight, the only decision is to choose
10:24which room will be theirs and which will be for their guests.
10:28It's about the guests.
10:29Yes, it is.
10:31I think I know which bedroom is going to be for us.
10:34Yeah, I know.
10:35It's them two singles.
10:37Absolutely.
10:38And I can come and have a cuddle, can't I?
10:41No, I'm all right.
10:42I'm all right.
10:43Now he's been too long.
10:46This might have to be our room,
10:48purely for the fact that it gives the guests privacy as well.
10:52We definitely need to give the guests these good rooms
10:54and we'll just take the small one.
10:56Yeah.
10:58But the hosts need their rest.
11:00Tomorrow, the real work begins.
11:02The race is on to prove who deserves this life-changing prize.
11:06The reality is we have got a chance to win a B&B that will change our lives.
11:16Here's to me and you, killer.
11:18Bonne chance.
11:19Good luck.
11:21Yeah, yeah.
11:23Are we a bit nervous?
11:24Are you?
11:25Yeah, because it's not something we've done before.
11:27Sure, but we're here, Daphne, to win.
11:29This is where it all begins.
11:30Early morning in the beautiful French countryside
11:46and three couples are waking to the challenge of their lives.
11:50Look at this.
11:52Steve, look at this.
11:54We've got our own swimming pool.
11:57Oh, this is amazing, isn't it?
11:59Yeah.
12:00Today, they will become B&B hosts,
12:03competing to make their dream a reality
12:05and win the prize of a lifetime.
12:08I slept like a baby.
12:09What about you?
12:10Well, I didn't get to bed at half twelve.
12:12That's because you're obsessed around the kitchen, checking everything.
12:15I know, I know, but there is a lot at stake.
12:17Yeah, I know.
12:18Like, won the B&B in France.
12:19I know.
12:20When does that ever come around?
12:23I had some very strange dreams.
12:25Did you?
12:26Yeah.
12:27It was mainly about beans.
12:28Bait beans.
12:29What, as in like, bait beans?
12:30Bait beans.
12:31There's probably some hidden meaning in that dream.
12:32Probably.
12:33I agree.
12:34I agree.
12:35I agree.
12:36I agree.
12:37I agree.
12:38I agree.
12:39I agree.
12:40Over the next five days, the hosts will face a series of challenges set by the judges.
12:47Each one inspired by the real demands of running a B&B.
12:52At the end of the week, only two pairs of hosts will make it through to finals week
12:57and stay in the running to win the keys to their very own guest house in France.
13:01It's 9am sharp and the first challenge begins.
13:08Oh.
13:09What's that?
13:10Someone's at the door.
13:11There you go.
13:12Big reveal.
13:13Oh, look.
13:14The golden envelope.
13:15Bring it in, bring it in, Patrick.
13:16We've got an envelope.
13:17We've got an envelope.
13:18Oh God.
13:19Let's go.
13:20Terrified.
13:21Let's go.
13:22Let's go.
13:23Terrified.
13:24Oh, right.
13:25Tonight you will be hosting one couple for one night stay in one room with breakfast tomorrow
13:44morning.
13:45You have six hours to furnish the bedrooms and bathrooms if you're a B&B.
13:48These note towels are supplied.
13:51Everything else you need to source locally.
13:53A judge will arrive to inspect your first B&B room at 3pm.
13:57After this point, you will not be allowed to make changes to your B&B.
14:01Guest will arrive between half three and half four.
14:05Challenge.
14:09Each couple has a budget of £1,000.
14:12Challenge on.
14:13This is right up your alley, isn't it?
14:15It is.
14:16Duvets, pillows and towels are provided.
14:19The rest is up to the hosts.
14:21It would obviously be nice to put some toiletries in here.
14:24Like hand washes and things like that.
14:26Yeah.
14:27There's no waste bin in here to put any tissues or makeup remover pads.
14:32Bins.
14:33We need to get some bins.
14:34But they need to plan carefully.
14:36The budget needs to stretch to food and provisions for the rest of the week.
14:40Toilet rolls.
14:41Oh yeah, we need toilet rolls.
14:42Three double duvet covers.
14:43Toothpaste.
14:44Shaving foam.
14:45Razors.
14:46Deodorant.
14:47Yeah, yeah, yeah.
14:48Well many times you go away and you forget.
14:49Leave my suitcase full of clothes as well.
14:50And a pot of money by the way.
14:51And a pot of money, yeah.
14:52And a pot of money by the way.
14:53And a pot of money, yeah.
14:54They can't hold it.
14:55They should know what they bring.
14:56The hosts have also been allowed to bring a small box of items from home to help them
15:11reflect their own personalities.
15:13I'm not sure which room we'll put this in.
15:16No, I'm not.
15:17But I love it.
15:18Look at that, Steve.
15:20Yep.
15:21Pink chicken.
15:24You've know our taste, have you?
15:26Know our taste.
15:28The competition is on and with a life-changing prize to play for.
15:32We've got work to do.
15:33Let's go.
15:34The hosts are ready to hit the shops.
15:37Really got to crack on now.
15:38Do you know where we're going?
15:39Yep.
15:40Feeling coming there now?
15:43Nope.
15:44I don't know what direction I'm looking in.
15:46You're going that way.
15:47You're looking at that way.
15:48We're going that way.
15:49I know.
15:50Oh, I'm all wrong, sorry.
15:56In six hours, the judges will arrive to inspect their newly furnished rooms.
16:03And they'll be looking to see which hosts have gone the extra mile.
16:06I'll be looking at whether they've thought about any little treats, anything that's above and beyond generous.
16:15I think guests will be expecting to see some elements of personalization in the room, whether it's a little homemade biscuit on arrival, a folded towel.
16:23And then the soft furnishings, they need to add something soft, a sense of luxury and fitting, I think, with the style of the house.
16:33It's about that lotion, I think, that makes the property unique.
16:36No strangers to house renovation, Jackie and Rob are the first to complete their shop.
16:44Can you see I really enjoyed myself?
16:46I did.
16:47I'm in my element.
16:48You are.
16:49I can see that.
16:50Do you know what, as well, the interior stuff out here is so nice.
16:55Yeah, that'll give us a bit of edge, I think.
16:57I hope so.
16:58Wow.
16:59Now that were traumatic.
17:00I can manage trolleys.
17:01I'm sorry.
17:02Michelle and Steve are working hard to stay within budget.
17:07It was a lot of money, that.
17:08Gosh.
17:09I mean, I know you've got to get a bit of quality.
17:10No, it's not.
17:11We've got quality.
17:12We've got lovely things.
17:13Yes, we have, Steve, you're right.
17:14Lovely things.
17:15Yeah, you're right.
17:16People will see that it's quality stuff.
17:17That budget's got to last us the week.
17:18Do you know what I mean?
17:19Nicola and Roy's shopping trip has also added up.
17:20You spent like 200 quid in bedding.
17:21So?
17:22Yeah, that's all.
17:23I know, but you don't want cheap.
17:24Buy cheap, pay twice.
17:25See, if you'd have been there on your own, you'd have bought the cheapest.
17:26I wouldn't have.
17:27You'd have lifted the bed sheet at £5.99.
17:28No.
17:29And the bed sheet at £18.99, you'd have went, no, the £5.99, no, we bought cotton.
17:34Because Nicola was there.
17:35Mmm.
17:36The hosts now need to prepare their bedroom and bathroom to perfection and be ready to
17:41welcome the judges at 3pm on the dot.
17:44Oh!
17:45Oh!
17:46Oh!
17:47Oh!
17:48Oh!
17:49Oh!
17:50Oh!
17:51Oh!
17:52Oh!
17:53Oh!
17:54Oh!
17:55Oh!
17:56Oh!
17:57Oh!
17:58Oh!
17:59Oh!
18:00Oh!
18:01Oh!
18:02Oh!
18:03Oh!
18:04Jeez.
18:05I don't think Jeff Capes could let that.
18:08Well, Roy's a better cook than I am.
18:13And I'm a better cleaner than he is, so...
18:15It just...
18:16It's not...
18:17I don't even know what's talked about.
18:18We just fall into these rolls.
18:20I'm making homemade shortbreads for the guests to arrive.
18:23So as if we're behind, it'll buy a wee bit of time.
18:27We'll not be behind.
18:28There's no...
18:29There's no rule for error here.
18:30There's no room.
18:31Do you want me to move, love?
18:35Yes, please.
18:36Okay.
18:37Nicola.
18:38Stop getting stressed, love.
18:39Please.
18:40I'm not getting stressed.
18:41Everything's fine.
18:43For all our hosts, quickly finding a balance could be the key to an early edge in the competition.
18:48Nice and clean.
18:49When you go the extra mile for people, they see it and appreciate it.
18:54Nicola!
18:55Oh, for God's sake, Roy, what?
18:56Nicola!
18:57Yes, darling?
18:58Nicola!
18:59Oh, for God's sake, Roy, what?
19:01Nicola!
19:02Yes, darling?
19:03We've only an hour.
19:04Do you need any hand up there?
19:05An hour?
19:06Yeah.
19:07You work your magic on a bedroom.
19:08I'll go downstairs, get tidied up in the kitchen.
19:09No problem.
19:10All right.
19:11Let's do it.
19:12Rooms will be assessed on both style and function, with judges paying close attention to the
19:24small details that make a stay feel effortless.
19:27But there's one major detail Jackie and Rob have overlooked.
19:33Sorry, I can't find any sheets for the bedroom upstairs.
19:39Have you looked in the cupboards?
19:40I have looked in the cupboards.
19:41All the cupboards?
19:42Yeah.
19:43There's none at all?
19:45Their inventory clearly states bed linen is not included.
19:50I presumed, and I thought all the bedding was out there.
19:55So the only bedding that we have is the bedding that we slept on last night.
19:59All right.
20:00We don't have time to wash and dry it.
20:02No.
20:03OK.
20:04So we need a solution.
20:05And we don't have time to go to the shops.
20:06All right.
20:07So we have a major issue here, don't we?
20:09We do.
20:10I've known Michelle 45 years and I've never seen her in this situation.
20:22Because I want to win it.
20:23Stress.
20:24I want to win it.
20:25And this is important.
20:26I'll go get the shower gels and everything.
20:31You'll start doing the bed.
20:33Oh.
20:34Yeah?
20:35Should this be ironed?
20:36I think it probably should.
20:37I've never seen you iron a sheet.
20:39Yeah, but we have sheets that you don't need to iron in Barnsley.
20:42Look at that.
20:43Look at that.
20:44It's so natural.
20:45Does it really matter?
20:46It's about it looking nice.
20:47Nobody's seen us do it, have they?
20:49The judges will be looking to see whether the host's personalities are reflected in the rooms.
21:01These are from home and this is the sort of person I am.
21:04I like a bit of glitz.
21:06Can you see how it's changed the look as well of the room?
21:09It's just nice, isn't it?
21:10Amazing.
21:11You didn't even look.
21:12I did, I did.
21:13No, you didn't!
21:14I'm just going to try and make some decorative towels.
21:18It's the first impressions of what they'll see and they'll think,
21:22oh, that's quite nice, you've made an effort.
21:28The judges are on their way.
21:31Do you think these things are all great when you...
21:33I know.
21:34..and then when you get here?
21:35So I've had me orders to make a love art.
21:38There you go.
21:39Now, doesn't that look quite pretty?
21:42We've misread the cards, all right?
21:44In our heist.
21:45We're in it as a team.
21:46We just hold our hands up to it, you know?
21:48For me, the most important person is our guest.
21:50I'll shoot it out, get the bed in, we'll get the bed made,
21:53they'll have a great time, this'll be the lesson.
21:55We'll do that.
21:56OK.
21:57All right?
21:58Yeah?
22:03Does that look all right?
22:04Yeah, that's fine.
22:06Is it an eel or a swan?
22:08We'll put the boy here.
22:11Aw.
22:12Hope he's all right in the category.
22:18Is it OK?
22:19Yes, it's lovely.
22:20No!
22:21Why would you do that?
22:23It's time for the judge's verdict.
22:26Hosts need to be prepared for the eventuality that something will go wrong.
22:33Making a mistake isn't the problem, it's how they deal with it.
22:37It's a boiling pot when you know you have guests coming.
22:40You want everything to be perfect.
22:41But sometimes it's not perfect.
22:43In the Dordogne, the hosts have done all they can to prepare their guest rooms.
23:00But their time is up.
23:02Here we go!
23:04Ahead of tonight's guests, the judges have arrived for their first inspection.
23:11Bonjour!
23:12Bonjour!
23:13You won't be smiling like that in a minute.
23:17Hello!
23:18Hello, hello.
23:19How do you do?
23:20Hello.
23:21My name is Steve.
23:22Steve and Michelle.
23:23Hello.
23:24Hello, are you all right?
23:25Hello.
23:26Hello.
23:27How are you?
23:28My new name is?
23:29It's Eva.
23:30Eva, I'm Roy.
23:31Nice to meet you.
23:32Hello, I'm Nicola.
23:33Nice to meet you.
23:34Welcome.
23:35Thank you very much.
23:36Can I come in and see what you've done?
23:43Giving her verdict on Michelle and Steve's efforts is Nicola.
23:47Look at this.
23:48It's lovely.
23:49Just be careful on these steps.
23:50Yeah, I'll catch you if you fall.
23:54Who, with more than 25 years' experience inspecting luxury B&Bs, is looking for a touch of class.
24:01Right, here we go.
24:02Some people are incredibly generous about what they leave in bedrooms.
24:07Fresh flowers, absolutely lovely in a bedroom, makes a huge difference.
24:13Are you excited?
24:14Yes!
24:17Oh my goodness!
24:21We've got a swan and a heart.
24:24That's Steve's domain.
24:26He just liked the knick-knacking, the titivating and that, do you know what I mean?
24:29If that's a word, titivating.
24:30It is.
24:31It is a word.
24:33Can I have a look at the bathroom?
24:35Absolutely.
24:36And you've done a veal and a lavatory paper.
24:39That's Steve's finishing touches.
24:42And I see you've got wine.
24:44Is that local wine?
24:45Yeah.
24:46Well, local.
24:47It's the supermarket, local.
24:49OK, so I've just noticed it's not a screw top.
24:53Oh.
24:54Into it.
24:55That's a good point.
24:57Very good.
25:00And the flowers?
25:01Yes, I brought them from home.
25:03You didn't think you could just pick some wild ones from the garden?
25:06We didn't know if there'd be flowers or anything.
25:08Right, right.
25:09You didn't know the garden was there.
25:10We had to dress it.
25:11Yeah.
25:12Just to give it a bit of a...
25:13Yes.
25:14Because I'm a bit glitzy, innit?
25:15Just a bit...
25:16You know what?
25:17Do you know what I mean?
25:18It definitely reflects your personality.
25:20Nicola and Roy have been paired with Hotel Inspector Ava.
25:26This is our lounge area.
25:27Beautiful.
25:29She sets the standard for B&Bs across the UK, and only perfection is acceptable.
25:35The thing I will be looking for is some personality and some thoughts as well,
25:39making sure they've thought about the little details.
25:42We've made these lovely shortbreads for our guests.
25:44Oh, wonderful.
25:45Are they homemade, you said?
25:46They're homemade.
25:47They were only made about literally an hour ago.
25:50As fresh as can be.
25:51Absolutely.
25:55Have they thought about a bin for the bathroom?
25:57Have they thought about putting maybe a coaster on the desk where needed?
26:01It's all those little attention to details and little extras that would make the guests stay comfortable.
26:10This is your room.
26:11Let's take a wee light on.
26:13There you go.
26:14Very good.
26:15So, who was in charge of the cleaning of the room today?
26:17Me.
26:18I like to clean.
26:19Well, if I had done it, Eva, Nicola would have done it again.
26:22Oh.
26:23We like to see some teamwork here, yes.
26:25Is there any aspect in this bedroom which you've introduced to reflect your personality and your identity?
26:31We've stayed at places where there's lots of ornaments and tat.
26:34We like to keep as minimal as possible.
26:36Yeah.
26:37Well, I suppose the little touch here is your choice of print for the bedsheets then.
26:42We didn't want anything too bold or anything.
26:44Yeah.
26:45100% cotton.
26:46Nice cotton.
26:47Keep cool.
26:48Excellent choice.
26:49I'll be checking the bathroom next if that's all right.
26:51Yes, all right.
26:53All right.
26:57No strangers to the challenges of a guest house, Andrew and Brennan are reviewing Jackie and Rob's preparation.
27:03We've had a little bit of a faux pas in our haste.
27:08I thought I had read somewhere all bedding would be provided.
27:13But on the challenge cards it says...
27:16You have to buy it.
27:17You have to buy the bedding.
27:18It's one of those things.
27:20So we've had to take a deep breath.
27:21Yeah.
27:22Take a deep breath.
27:23What else can you do?
27:24We're all fallible.
27:25We are.
27:26Yes.
27:27We are.
27:28My top tip would be plan ahead.
27:31Always be ahead of the game.
27:33Have a solution lined up for something that could go wrong.
27:40In here is the master bedroom.
27:44It's my fault as much as yours.
27:45We both read the cards and both misread it.
27:49Tell us in the room what you've brought.
27:51We've brought from home the cushion on the chair and the vase and the flowers.
27:56And I'm guessing that's the ensuite.
27:57That's the ensuite.
27:58This is the ensuite, yes.
28:01Nice, contemporary.
28:03The items that are in here we have bought today.
28:06Excellent.
28:07We purchased the bin.
28:08Mm-hm.
28:09We purchased the toilet roll holder.
28:10Mm-hm.
28:11The diffuser.
28:12Very good.
28:13So we thought it was just a nice touch.
28:16Mind your heads.
28:20With the tour over, the scrutiny begins.
28:23We'll leave you to it now.
28:26Thank you very much.
28:29And no stone is left unturned.
28:32I see that they've thought about the toilet brush here.
28:34However, there's no bin in the bathroom, which will be something that guests would pick up on.
28:39A little bit of dust on the rain shower head too.
28:41With a life-changing prize up for grabs, the judges are pulling no punches.
28:48What I did like was she has done the stuff that reflects her.
28:53And that's sort of authentic.
28:55I could probably do without the swan.
28:58The swan that didn't really look like a swan.
29:00Well, it's not up my street, but you know, they were having fun.
29:05There was a little bit of taradiddle, if you call it that.
29:12Bless Jack and Rob.
29:14They didn't read the rules.
29:16Their enthusiasm is what's going to drive them forward because they did drop the ball pretty, pretty, pretty badly.
29:23Nobody's perfect.
29:24Yeah.
29:25Well.
29:26Nobody's perfect.
29:30Do you know what?
29:31We've done his best.
29:32That's all we can say in it.
29:33Yeah.
29:34I feel it messed up already.
29:36It's all right.
29:37Yeah, but there's no bin in the bathroom.
29:39What the heck?
29:41Honesty is the best policy.
29:43If we don't have a resolution before your guests arrive, then let's be honest with them and let's find a way forward.
29:49Yeah, absolutely.
29:51Now the competition is about to heat up, as the hosts face their biggest test so far.
30:00Because the next knock on the door will be their very first guests.
30:04And if that's not enough pressure, they won't be alone.
30:07So we will be following you with your guests in tow, but we are flies on the wall.
30:15Okay.
30:16You cannot refer to us.
30:17You cannot defer to us.
30:18No, it's all good.
30:19They're not in.
30:20They're not in.
30:22The initial welcome is very, very important.
30:25I think within that first two minutes, the guests have kind of made up their mind whether they're going to like it or not.
30:32And I can honestly say, even to this day, we both still jump when the door knocks, even though we know they're coming.
30:39Hello and welcome.
30:40Hello.
30:41Yes.
30:42Welcome to our beautiful.
30:43Isn't it amazing?
30:44You are very lucky, aren't you really?
30:45Right, would you like to come in?
30:46In this challenge, the spotlight is on which hosts will go the extra mile.
31:01Wow.
31:02So, look at this.
31:03When the sun is shining, you've got the grapevines there and the pool.
31:10They're a beautiful pool.
31:12Michelle and Steve are hosting Australian holidaymakers Sam and Alex.
31:17Wait till you see your little bits.
31:20Are you excited?
31:21I'm excited for you.
31:23Right, come on then.
31:28Beautiful.
31:31Oh, look at the view.
31:33So, you've got some water, you've got some wine, you've got some little cookies.
31:38Beautiful.
31:39This is Steve's artwork.
31:41Have you spent some time on a cruise ship?
31:44Yes.
31:45I did.
31:46Yes.
31:47Yes.
31:48Is the wine local?
31:49It is, yes.
31:50Oh, wow.
31:51So, you can have a look behind you.
31:53Go and have a look in there.
31:55That's your shower room.
31:57Yeah.
31:58Oh, you guys have gone all out.
32:00This is beautiful.
32:03And if there's anything, you need anything, just come to the house.
32:07The back door section is always open.
32:10Steve might even do you a little bit of magic.
32:14Oh, really?
32:15Really?
32:16Yeah.
32:17Nicola and Roy are welcoming guests, Alison and Janine.
32:22Hello.
32:23Hello.
32:24How are you?
32:25How are you?
32:26How are you doing?
32:27How are you doing these kids?
32:28They've got big muscles.
32:29Yeah.
32:30Good job, you need them.
32:31My bad.
32:32My bad.
32:33Have you started to travel today?
32:35Well, just spent the last week in Italy.
32:37Oh, lovely.
32:38Yeah.
32:39We're a little bit...
32:40You'll sleep well tonight.
32:41I hope so.
32:43So, would you like to see your room?
32:44Absolutely.
32:45Okay, let's go.
32:46Did you bring your family?
32:47That's my mum in there.
32:51Now, here's your room.
32:58What we'll do is, we'll bring your bags in, let you just get settled.
33:01Yep.
33:02Come down to us any time.
33:03Yep.
33:04There's freshly made shortbreads, tea, coffee.
33:06That sounds good.
33:07Yeah?
33:08Yeah.
33:09We'll let you settle in then.
33:10We'll let you settle in.
33:11That sounds good for two big beds, that as well, isn't it?
33:12It's not bad then.
33:13Yeah.
33:16Joe and Karen have an overnight stay with Jackie and Rob.
33:20If you just mind your heads as you go up, no, after you.
33:25Andrew and Brennan have a close eye on how the hosts handle a stressful situation.
33:33One little thing I'm going to do is...
33:35Yeah?
33:36We've just had a little bit of a faux pas today.
33:37Bit of drama with the bed sheets.
33:39The linen weren't clean properly, so I'm going to now go out and buy some.
33:43Okay.
33:44While I'm out, would you care for a drink or anything?
33:47A cup of tea?
33:48A cup of tea?
33:49Yeah.
33:50I don't drink tea or coffee.
33:51No problem at all.
33:52No problem.
33:53What do you like to drink?
33:54Herbie.
33:55Herbie?
33:56Please.
33:57Anything for tea?
33:58A mint tea?
33:59No, no matter.
34:00It doesn't matter.
34:01A mint tea?
34:02Anything.
34:03No, a tea tea.
34:04Yeah, that's right.
34:05No problem at all.
34:06We've got mint tea.
34:07That's fantastic.
34:08And we've got green tea.
34:09And we've got berry tea.
34:10Mint?
34:11That'd be fine.
34:13With lemon, if you like, as well.
34:15Or choices.
34:16There's lots of choices.
34:17I'm getting a headache now.
34:18Yeah, that's it.
34:19That's it.
34:20I mean, if you want to, as I say, you're welcome to just settle yourself in real quickly.
34:24Thank you very much.
34:25Thank you very much.
34:27Thanks for the welcome.
34:28Yeah, it's all right.
34:31The check-in is complete.
34:35See you later.
34:36And with the hosts out of earshot.
34:39Gosh.
34:40The real feedback begins.
34:43What do you think of the bars?
34:45It's definitely got flair.
34:49Oh, oh.
35:00Day one of the competition and three couples are going all out to prove they have what it takes to win their own B&B.
35:10Would you mind if I had a Yorkshire tea?
35:12No, no.
35:13There's my bag of Yorkshire tea.
35:14I love your stuff.
35:15I love it.
35:16And I promise, I promise it is just tea.
35:18First guests through the door and the pressure is on.
35:23Right.
35:24100%.
35:25Cotton?
35:26I think it's really important to have good bedding.
35:27Yeah, it's very important.
35:28It's really important to have good bedding.
35:29Yeah, they've done a good job there.
35:31Nicola and Roy's guests, Alison and Janine, are frequent travellers who don't leave comfort to chance.
35:38There it is.
35:40All size proper.
35:41Two metres long.
35:42Don't open it yet.
35:43You might be very comfortable, you never know.
35:46We always travel with our own pillow.
35:48There's probably nothing wrong with their pillows, but I like my own bodily fluids on my pillow and no one else's.
35:54Look under a hotel pillow, they're often quite stained.
35:57Yeah.
35:58How do I do a little lovely and clean?
35:59Oh, I think everything went well.
36:01She's probably a mattress topper.
36:03It does out everywhere.
36:04Okay.
36:05It does out everywhere.
36:06Do you know something?
36:07I take my hat off to people like that.
36:09You know, I wouldn't have the space in my suitcase.
36:11That's good for one.
36:12They actually seem like they're good fun, actually.
36:13Yeah, they seem quite competent.
36:14Yeah, I'll look forward to having a drink with them later, I think.
36:15Yeah.
36:16And a bit of shortbread.
36:17Oh, it's quite a sweet shower, Karen.
36:18Yeah, lovely.
36:19Yeah.
36:20Good standing room in there.
36:21Jackie and Rob are trying to resolve their first problem as hosts.
36:22After an oversight has left their guests, Joe and Karen, without bed linen.
36:23Guys, can I just ask, what's your plan now with regards to the guests?
36:24They'll take the drinks up to them, and they wait for them.
36:24Right, they have the cluttered, they have to do it.
36:25Yeah, they have to do it.
36:26And they'll be able to do it.
36:27They have to do it.
36:28Right.
36:29And then, at this point, they drink the hot bread.
36:30lobby's hot bread.
36:31I don't know what that is, but they find the hot bread.
36:33Oh, it's quite a special shower, Karen.
36:34Yeah?
36:35Lovely.
36:36Yeah, yeah.
36:37Good standing room in there.
36:38Jackie and Rob are trying to resolve their first problem as hosts, after an oversight has
36:43left their guests, Joe and Karen, without bed linen.
36:46Guys, can I just ask, what's your plan now with regards to the guests?
36:51They'll take the drinks up to them.
36:53And then, as I said, then I can...
36:55No, I don't think we... Are we going to take the drinks to their rooms?
36:58We're just going to leave it downstairs.
36:59So you need to move those guests as quickly as possible.
37:03Yes, yeah.
37:03So you can get in and address it.
37:08Have you got up?
37:09Oh, I thought you said you were going up.
37:10No, I was... Have you got up?
37:15Come in, come in.
37:15Hello, Karen and Jo.
37:16Just to let you know, your drinks are downstairs in the lounge for you
37:19when you'd like to come down.
37:20Thank you. Thanks very much.
37:21Just my drink when you come down the stairs.
37:26Oh, this is nice.
37:28Take a seat.
37:30Have a moment to refresh.
37:31Yes, yes.
37:32And then I'll be back in in a moment.
37:34Enjoy.
37:35Yeah, thank you.
37:36And then, once you've had your drinks, then I can show you around if you like.
37:40Please, please.
37:41I can show you.
37:41We'd love to see it, yeah.
37:42No problem at all.
37:43Yeah.
37:43If there's anything else you'd like, just let me know.
37:45Cheers.
37:46Cheers.
37:52Pretty clean.
37:54Shower's always a big thing for me.
37:56I hate a dirty shower, but it looks really good.
37:58As a pilot, Alex has travelled the world, and along with his partner Sam, is used to premium
38:05stays.
38:07They seem like lovely hosts.
38:09I probably would have, you know, met with, like, a welcome drink or something, but they
38:14seem like really lovely, welcoming people.
38:16For sure.
38:17Maybe tried a little bit too hard.
38:20I've been wanting to try some of the local wine, but I don't really know what they make
38:24here, but...
38:24No, we might have to ask...
38:26Well, that's a rosé, so that would normally be chilled, wouldn't it?
38:29Yeah.
38:29The rosé you'd chill.
38:31But, no, I'd like to try that.
38:33But that's Bergerac, so that's not far away.
38:36She did ask me a question about the wine.
38:38Is it local?
38:39I said it was local.
38:41From the local supermarket, you said.
38:43But I said it's local.
38:45Yeah.
38:45That's what I said, but I blagged it.
38:47So, what do you think of the towels?
38:48If there was rose petals, you would have seen me walking out the door.
38:51Yeah, I know.
38:52I know.
38:53But, look, probably not my thing, but they seem so keen of what they've done.
38:59They've done a lot of work.
39:00They've put a lot of effort into it, so it's lovely to see, and they seem like a really
39:05lovely couple.
39:06They are, yeah.
39:08Six hours ago, none of these couples had hosted a guest house before.
39:15It's been a stressy day.
39:16It's been an emotional day.
39:19I'm just glad it's on my way.
39:22It's been a baptism of fire.
39:25She's okay.
39:25And also, I need you to look for pillows.
39:27All right.
39:29Take your time.
39:30Take your time.
39:30Hurry up.
39:31Hurry up.
39:31I love you.
39:32They've given everything they have.
39:36There we go, folks.
39:38Oh, lovely.
39:38Tea?
39:39Yes, please.
39:41New Yorkshire tea?
39:43Absolutely.
39:43But only the judges decide who has made the strongest start.
39:51As day one draws to a close, it's time for the judges' HQ.
39:57Well, guys, we have had the most exciting, very interesting day.
40:03I'm wondering if we shouldn't be particularly harsh in our judgment, because if they don't get better than they were today, then they don't deserve to win such an incredible prize.
40:16Such a big prize.
40:17Nicola, tell us about your people.
40:18I had Michelle and Steve, who were extremely warm, welcoming, lovely.
40:26When they opened the door to me, it was almost like being greeted by two Springer Spaniels.
40:33It was just full on.
40:36That was lovely for me, because I rather like Springer Spaniels.
40:41But I think if you were a little bit shyer or more withdrawn, it might have been a bit full on.
40:48But they were so warm and natural.
40:52So beautiful.
40:55Steve, have you done a runner?
40:58Where is it?
40:59That's me.
41:01Of all of the people that we've met, I think she's the least nervous of the lot.
41:05No, I think you're right.
41:06Because I think she's absolutely confident in who she is.
41:09And that's really refreshing, to be honest.
41:11It was refreshing.
41:12The bedroom, they had done a swan towel and a heart towel on the bed.
41:19I think what I would like to say is, I don't believe the towels should be on the bed.
41:25Agreed.
41:25Right.
41:26So they shouldn't be sculpted into a swan and a heart on the bed.
41:29Well, while I appreciate the art, the skill, you know, I think there's an issue with hygiene here,
41:36because there's a lot of touching of that towel.
41:38Oh, I haven't thought of that.
41:40Well, some guests might find that problematic.
41:43Eva, tell us about your hosts.
41:45So I had Nicola and Roy, who are both wonderful and just gave a really strong impression.
41:52Don't worry, I'll sing for you.
41:54No, thanks.
41:55Not one.
41:55It's not raining yet.
41:56It's not raining yet.
41:56In terms of the setup of the house, I found that the house was really clean.
42:02On closer inspection, I did find a couple minor lapses, some dust on top of the rain shower
42:07head, for instance, and a couple of watermarks on the chrome.
42:10In the bathroom, there were a couple of missing items as well, some quite important ones, so
42:15there wasn't any bin.
42:16In terms of the ease of use, there are similar elements.
42:19There's room for improvement.
42:21But they really complemented each other.
42:23I think one of their strengths is going to be, you know, the teamwork aspect.
42:28How are you feeling now, love?
42:29Sick.
42:32We had a really odd faux pas.
42:36Our hosts, Jackie and Rob, didn't realise that they had to actually buy and supply the
42:42bedsheets.
42:43They misread the rules, and they were devastated.
42:46So how did they deal with that then?
42:48They were flustered.
42:49They were seriously flustered.
42:52Is it poppers?
42:53Oh, yes.
42:56The guests were very, very gracious.
42:59But our biggest issue was that they left them in the room with no sheets.
43:04So they weren't invited in the lounge for a cup of tea or anything like that?
43:07They asked if they wanted any refreshments, and then they said, would you like to stay
43:13in the room for a while?
43:14That's where we'd be like, get them out?
43:16Yes.
43:17We were in the corridor going...
43:18Exactly.
43:19They forgot to breathe.
43:20Yeah.
43:21And that was kind of made them go.
43:22They perhaps weren't relaxed enough.
43:23Yeah.
43:24And in fairness, they've only had six hours.
43:27Yes, but everyone has had six hours.
43:30Yeah.
43:31So we have to bear that in mind as well.
43:33The hosts have made their first impressions on the judges, but all is still to play for.
43:42Day one has brought challenges.
43:43That's fine.
43:44But we've managed to overcome those challenges.
43:49Yeah.
43:50Well done, you.
43:51Come on.
43:52Oof.
43:53That was Sunday, bye.
43:54I hope that was hardest challenge.
43:59I'll tell you now, I don't think it was sleep.
44:01I think there's more to come.
44:04Tomorrow, we'll bring a fresh challenge as the hosts have put through their paces once
44:09again.
44:10Each step edging them closer to a life-changing prize.
44:15I'm really excited to see where this goes next, because if we're able to judge this much
44:22so early, just imagine what levels they can achieve.
44:25It's going to be an exciting week, so.
44:28It is.
44:29Yeah.
44:30And what better company to do it with?
44:31Oh.
44:32You guys.
44:33You guys.
44:36Next time.
44:37This is a lazy man's way of making home this.
44:40The B&B battle moves to breakfast.
44:42What's that, Steve?
44:43Is it a rose?
44:44Yes.
44:45French toast.
44:46It's a bit too runny.
44:48And a curveball challenge.
44:50Dad.
44:51What?
44:52The guest arriving early.
44:53That's lovely.
44:54Futs the hosts to the test.
44:56No.
44:57Shh.
44:58Unfortunately, I forgot the duvet covers.
45:00This is one of our welcome gifts.
45:02Looked like a castrated cat.
45:03A castrated cat.
45:04Ha ha ha ha!
