The Admiral: Roaring Currents (2014) is a South Korean historical war epic based on the real-life Battle of Myeongnyang in 1597. Set during the Japanese invasions of Korea, the film follows the legendary Admiral Yi Sun-sin, played with gravitas by Choi Min-sik. Reinstated to command a decimated and demoralized navy, Admiral Yi faces insurmountable odds: his tiny fleet of only 12 ships must confront a massive Japanese armada of over 300 vessels advancing toward the capital.

The film centers on Yi's brilliant tactical mind and steely resolve. Recognizing he cannot win a conventional fight, he lures the Japanese fleet into the treacherous Myeongnyang Strait, planning to use its violent, swirling tidal currents against them. It is a tense, visceral depiction of leadership and courage under fire, culminating in a spectacular, hour-long naval battle sequences where Yi achieves one of historyโ€™s most miraculous military victories against impossible numbers.
