00:00:30This is Andrej, I have completed my T2 exercise for protocol.
00:01:00I have completed my T2 exercise for protocol.
00:01:30That rain we got on Saturday was certainly welcome.
00:01:35It totaled an inch and a half out at the airport, but it had no measurable effect on the drought.
00:01:40Outdoor burn bans continue in effect for our entire viewing area.
00:01:45Lake levels for Lake Whitby and the Evergreen Reservoir continue to drop past historic lows,
00:01:50setting new records nearly every day and costing the tourism industry almost a billion dollars this summer.
00:01:56I'm Sissy Cisneros, reporting live in the studio.
00:02:00We'll be back after a break.
00:02:02Have you or a loved one been injured at work or been hurt in a car wreck or truck accident?
00:02:08When it's just you against the big insurance companies, you need someone sharp on your side.
00:02:12Spencer Sharp.
00:02:13Here you go.
00:02:19Can you sign here, please?
00:02:19Santa Isabel 97 degrees, sustained winds 23 miles per hour from the southwest.
00:02:49You know, somebody's going to have to take responsibility for this.
00:03:19There's some little fish.
00:03:22God, it's hot.
00:03:24This is the worst project ever.
00:03:26Come shoot these fish.
00:03:35Fuck the fish.
00:03:37Mr. Thompson, I mean Ashley.
00:03:40Shut up.
00:03:42I was saying he's all into the environment and everything, but God, he's hot.
00:03:48The hell?
00:03:55Oh, shit.
00:04:00Oh, shit.
00:04:07A rapidly moving fire is threatening neighborhoods near State Highway 6 and I-35.
00:04:22Police and fire officials say a number of structures along Slaughter Creek have been destroyed and that loss of life is a possibility.
00:04:29Jeff?
00:04:30That's right, Rosario.
00:04:31City officials are evacuating a number of neighborhoods in that area, including Keystone Ranch, Vista Verde, and the estates of Slaughter Creek.
00:04:39And let's go live to Brenda Marchetta on the scene.
00:04:42Brenda?
00:04:43Jeff, Rosario.
00:04:44I'm here overlooking the unincorporated neighborhood of Santa Isabel.
00:04:47Officials say the fire started about an hour ago and has already spread over 700 acres, destroying at least 116 homes.
00:04:55No injuries have been reported at this time.
00:04:58The fire apparently started in a pile of discarded tires at an area business.
00:05:02Brenda Marchetta, Eyewitness News.
00:05:05Thank you, Brenda.
00:05:06Rosario, I believe we just received word on shelters opening for evacue-
00:05:10Have you heard about the fire?
00:05:12That's right, Jeff.
00:05:13Awful.
00:05:14So how was lunch?
00:05:15I swam a mile and a half today.
00:05:17Here you go, girl.
00:05:18Hey, is, um, Jerry in?
00:05:20He had a meeting with Horace Hughes and then he was gonna go to lunch.
00:05:24He should be back any time.
00:05:25Will you tell him I need to see him when he comes in?
00:05:27You got it.
00:05:28Now you can own your very own drone, the Diamondback JS50 Quadrant.
00:05:32Wow.
00:05:33Awesome.
00:05:34Let me try it.
00:05:35It's not a toy.
00:05:36It's not simple enough for a child.
00:05:39Family fun of the Diamondback JS50.
00:05:41Only by 1999.
00:05:43In our top story today, the Slaughter Creek fire has crossed Highway 4 and is spreading rapidly
00:05:49before a high wind.
00:05:51The good news is that the fire now seems to be heading away from more populated areas.
00:06:08Let's go to David Lee, who is live on the scene.
00:06:11Chris, from what we've seen out here today, the poverty-stricken little community of Santa
00:06:15Isabel is virtually wiped out.
00:06:17Authorities say that a-
00:06:18We're sorry.
00:06:19Your call cannot be completed as dialed.
00:06:21A house has been destroyed and several homes in that upscale neighborhood have been damaged
00:06:25or destroyed.
00:06:26Tragically, eight horses at the Keystone stables were killed when a barn was caught in the path
00:06:31of a fire.
00:06:32Some houses in the estate with Slaughter Creek have also been damaged.
00:06:35We're sorry.
00:06:36Your call cannot be completed as dialed.
00:06:39Thank you, David.
00:06:40In other news, personal injury attorney Spencer Sharp, known for his flamboyant television
00:06:45commercials, was arrested today and charged with multiple counts of fraud, corruption,
00:06:51and child pornography.
00:06:53The state bar simultaneously announced proceedings to revoke Sharp's license to practice law.
00:06:58Make sure it's all there.
00:06:59Pick that up.
00:07:00Make sure it's all there.
00:07:01Pick that up.
00:07:02Make sure it's all there.
00:07:03Pick that up.
00:07:07Hey, how you doing?
00:07:08Pretty good, man.
00:07:09What can I get for you, brother?
00:07:10Take a PBR.
00:07:11Tanya, officials from FEMA and the EPA are here consulting with the fire department to determine
00:07:18exactly how to extinguish this fire and mitigate the environmental damage caused.
00:07:19Yeah, it's crazy, man.
00:07:2010 people died in there.
00:07:21Damn.
00:07:22I'll do that long.
00:07:23Second, I'll do that long, guys.
00:07:24I will do that long.
00:07:25I mean, wasn't one of the caught up.
00:07:26I bet you're not taking the two from the police department.
00:07:27I know I'm he's a man.
00:07:28I bet you're right.
00:07:29I'm a man.
00:07:30I'm a man.
00:07:31I'm a man.
00:07:32I'm a man.
00:07:33I'm a man.
00:07:34I'm a man.
00:07:35No, he's a man.
00:07:37No, no.
00:07:38I don't know.
00:07:39Even though.
00:07:40He's a man and a man.
00:07:41Don't.
00:07:42I'm a man.
00:07:43He's a man.
00:07:44No, no, no, no.
00:07:45No, no.
00:07:46He's a man.

00:07:48That's the man.
00:07:49No, no.
00:07:50What about you? How's your day been going?
00:07:54Getting better.
00:07:58And that, folks, is the rule of thirds,
00:08:02aka the golden mean. You've heard it before and you will hear it again
00:08:06this semester. Excuse me.
00:08:10Hi. Hello. What are you doing? You said you can never have too much coverage.
00:08:14This isn't a part of your project, though. You never know.
00:08:18Alright. Anybody bring any footage? We did.
00:08:22You did? We were almost burned alive. Really? That'd be terrible.
00:08:26They could fire me for sure. What you got?
00:08:34Oh, shit.
00:08:38Whoa. That was close.
00:08:42Good job.
00:08:52Interesting piece. Is that real?
00:08:54It was a salvage from the renovation of the Notre Dame de l'Assomption Cathedral,
00:09:00and Rennes.
00:09:02That's in France.
00:09:04It dates from the middle of the 12th century.
00:09:14With respect, sir,
00:09:16I think you have a need for our product.
00:09:18You just don't know it.
00:09:20Well, you're right about that last part.
00:09:22Well, you're right about that last part.
00:09:24You're right.
00:09:26How do we work?
00:09:28Here we go.
00:09:30The Enhanced Information Systems offers the widest array of remotely piloted vehicles for your information needs.
00:09:34From our high-flying Gorgon Stair technology with Mind's Eye software,
00:09:40technology with Mind's Eye software to our ultra miniaturised mosquito drone
00:09:45which can infiltrate almost any indoor space. Piggy-backed on darker technology
00:09:51our taskable smart cameras have a capability heretofore available only to
00:09:56animals and humans . They can recognize objects including things they've
00:10:01never seen before and even deduce that such things as drugs or terrorists are
00:10:06hidden based on behavior patterns. They can describe with words what they see
00:10:10and send you a text message and for the decision-maker who is overwhelmed with
00:10:14information they can be instructed to report only on activities of interest
00:10:19increasing the relevance of the incoming data. Very impressive but what about
00:10:26training and personnel? I could teach you to fly this thing in 10 minutes. A child can do it.
00:10:32Children are a lot more tech savvy than someone of my generation. Of course I have
00:10:38to talk with my associates but to be frank I don't think we have a need for this
00:10:46particular service at this particular time.
00:10:51From the get-go.

00:11:45that I'm sure we have the processes in place for disposing of them properly and
00:11:53I'm sure we got the documents to show the documents are there but there are a lot
00:11:58of discrepancies and a lot of the forms look to have been altered yeah but you

00:17:52and all of that but that area has always been an eyesore
00:17:55and I think what we need to do is approach this as a blessing in disguise
00:18:00what we should be doing is focusing on the rebuilding of that area and getting it right this time
00:18:05I can't believe how cold hearted that is
00:18:10no shit
00:18:12that's the truth about this town
00:18:13them kind of people they're fast breeders
00:18:16they'll place them little ones soon enough

00:19:33stay away from that stuff
00:19:36okay
00:19:37you don't want to go back to jail
00:19:39go out the private exit
00:19:55go out the private exit
00:20:32Oh, wait a second.
00:20:38I need to make a record.
00:20:40These people are dangerous.
00:20:41All the more reason.
00:20:43Can I trust you?
00:20:44You contacted me.
00:20:46I guess I'll have to. Around here.
00:20:48These people are really dangerous.
00:20:50You said that.
00:20:51I don't know where to start.
00:20:53Try the beginning.
00:20:54That would take all day.
00:20:56Okay, how I got involved.
00:20:57Five years ago, and it's been constant harassment ever since.
00:21:00Civil suits, criminal charges, disbarment proceedings, and now they've upped the ante again.
00:21:05Who's they?
00:21:06Some of the most powerful people in this city.
00:21:09Five years ago, I was approached by Mrs. Tamara Bilevichovna Nelson.
00:21:13Five years before that, her husband, Myron, a welder, was killed in an egregious construction accident building the new city hall.
00:21:19Anyway, she came to me when her previous attorneys told her that the case was closed, that she'd lost, and they had her signs of papers.
00:21:25Well, I agreed to look into it, and right away, I found that the papers she had signed were to sever her from her claim.
00:21:32That didn't seem right, so I looked into it further and found that several tens of millions had possibly passed through her claim after the severance.
00:21:39In other words, the claim was still open, but someone other than Mrs. Nelson was deriving any benefits from the claim.
00:21:45You follow me?
00:21:45I think so. Not very well.
00:21:47I've had five cases just like it since.
00:21:50Questionable deaths, outrageous claims, and a shitstorm of harassment.
00:21:53But what does any of this have to do with me?
00:21:54It has to do with me. That's why I've been arrested. That's why they're trying to disbar me.
00:21:59And who has the power to do all of that?
00:22:00I said these were very powerful people.
00:22:02But what does any of this have to do with Jerry?
00:22:08It's the same thing all over again, on a grand scale.
00:22:14I can't believe we have an interview with the chief of police.
00:22:17Me neither. How'd you get it?
00:22:19I just picked up the telephone.
00:22:20Wow.
00:22:21So, how do you think that we should handle this?
00:22:26Have you ever tried 60 Minutes style?
00:22:28What?
00:22:29Huh?
00:22:30Well, you guys have never heard of 60 Minutes?
00:22:33There, yeah.
00:22:38Yeah.
00:22:41Yeah, yeah.
00:22:42All right.
00:22:42He's습니다.
00:22:52This is great.
00:22:54Oh, you guys have!
00:22:55You.
00:22:56Have a great day!
00:22:57You.
00:22:58This is a great service!
00:22:59You know?
00:22:59It's a great place!
00:23:00This is the best.
00:23:01Are you going to record all this?
00:23:14I thought so.
00:23:15Anyway, in either case, foul play is definitely to be suspected of Mr. Leonard's death.
00:23:20Well, all of that is totally out of my purview.
00:23:23I'm an auditor.
00:23:24I audit books.
00:23:25The police are investigating Jerry's death.
00:23:28On the other hand, such a spectacular murder would seem a bit over the top for a few thousand dollars, don't you think?
00:23:34I don't know what to think.
00:23:35Surely he couldn't have calculated the extent of the damage or the number of deaths.
00:23:38That would be too much, even for him.
00:23:40Who? Jerry?
00:23:42What does Jerry's death have to do with these tires?
00:23:44These murders are to facilitate money laundering.
00:23:47What?
00:23:48These deaths are used to open insurance claims,
00:23:51which are then used to funnel practically unlimited amounts of cash into the banking system.
00:23:55That's crazy.
00:23:56All of that can be audited.
00:23:59Not really.
00:24:00These funds flow through attorney trust accounts.
00:24:02Untaxed, unreported.
00:24:05Really?
00:24:06Yeah.
00:24:07Sweet, huh?
00:24:09You still haven't told me.
00:24:11Who are these people?
00:24:13You'll think I'm crazy.
00:24:15Mr. Sharp, I'm having doubts about everything you've told me.
00:24:19Well, the main man, at least locally, is Alfred Whitby.
00:24:25Are you crazy?
00:24:25Like I said.
00:24:29He's the most powerful attorney in this town.
00:24:32Possibly the state.
00:24:34Like I said, these are powerful people.
00:24:36So why don't you tell me about your family?
00:24:50Do you have any kids?
00:24:51No, Emily, my wife and I haven't been that lucky.
00:24:54We've prayed and prayed, but God just hasn't given us any.
00:24:58We live blessed lives in other ways, but he just hasn't chosen to bless us in that way.
00:25:04Oh.
00:25:05Oh, and that's why I have my charity, Emily.
00:25:09You know, to sort of fill that hole.
00:25:11And that's why I try to work with at-risk youth, so give them opportunities and experience so that they can turn their lives around in a positive direction.
00:25:22We take them to football games, we take them fishing, ride-alongs on patrol, stuff like that.
00:25:27We've touched a lot of lives. Say, I don't suppose you guys would like to work with my guys and show them the ropes on how to make videos?
00:25:35Sure. It's fun. Mr. Thompson says that film is the medium of the future. Everyone needs to learn how to make a good video.
00:25:43And he's your teacher?
00:25:44Mm-hmm.
00:25:45Sounds like you think really highly of him, Garrett.
00:25:47Aw, yeah. He's the best. He has his master's degree and he teaches in college. He really tells it like it is.
00:25:53Well, we'll probably have to check with him first.
00:25:56Don't worry. I'll get in touch with your Mr. Thompson.
00:25:59You don't mind if we tape this, do you?
00:26:03Oh, yeah. We're all in this together, right?
00:26:04All right. So, how well did you know Jerry Leonard?
00:26:10I worked with him for three and a half years.
00:26:12You ever get to know him outside work?
00:26:14Not really.
00:26:16You never got involved romantically then?
00:26:18No.
00:26:19So y'all weren't lovers?
00:26:21No, Jerry was married. Jerry was a grandfather.
00:26:26You never fooled around on the side?
00:26:28I have no idea.
00:26:31So, you're not married?
00:26:33No.
00:26:33Got a boyfriend, though? Someone steady?
00:26:37No.
00:26:38Date around a lot then?
00:26:40No, I'm sorry, but what does any of this have to do with Jerry's death?
00:26:43I don't know. Could be nothing. Then again, it could be something.
00:26:46Just routine, ma'am.
00:26:49So, you ever date cops?
00:26:52No.
00:26:53You got something against cops?
00:26:54I apologize for my partner, ma'am. That's not part of our investigation.
00:26:59So, you're a lesbian?
00:27:03Whatever made you say that?
00:27:04Well, you don't date cops.
00:27:05Can we just get back to the interview, please?
00:27:07So, when was the last time you saw Jerry?
00:27:10He was in the office, the morning of the fire.
00:27:12I went out for an early lunch, and when I came back, he had gone out for a meeting.
00:27:18Who was he meeting?
00:27:19Horace Hughes.
00:27:26Horace?
00:27:27I came all the way out here to meet...
00:27:34I didn't know you were going to tell the mayor to admit that the tires were ours.
00:27:38It's called taking responsibility. It's the right thing to do.
00:27:42But it places the city in a very, very exposed position legally.
00:27:46Why don't you let me worry about the city's legal position?
00:27:51I could lose my job.
00:27:53Of course you could.
00:27:54That's certainly very true, Horace.
00:27:56Is anyone good?
00:27:57Well, I'm scared.
00:27:59You, sir, are overreacting.
00:28:03Jerry's assistant knows about the tires.
00:28:05Of course she does. That's her job.
00:28:08But she doesn't know about the bigger picture.
00:28:12This cell phone footage sucks.
00:28:15Yeah.
00:28:16So, I'm going to go ahead and ask some of the same questions,
00:28:20and you can just give me brief answers this time.
00:28:23Okay.
00:28:26That guy creeps me out.
00:28:29What are you talking about? He's cool.
00:28:31He's gross.
00:28:33He's the chief of police.
00:28:34A Hispanic leader.
00:28:35What about his charities?
00:28:36All that at-risk youth stuff.
00:28:38Yeah, they're at risk.
00:28:39From him.
00:28:41The boys are.
00:28:41You're crazy.
00:28:42You didn't see the way he was looking at you?
00:28:45What?
00:28:47He was trying to recruit you.
00:28:50How do you know that?
00:28:51You don't know that.
00:28:52I got the vibe.
00:28:53I didn't get any vibe.
00:28:55Well, that's because you're a virgin.
00:28:56Hello?
00:29:06Is this a good time?
00:29:09A good time for what?
00:29:11Uh, so, how's it going?
00:29:17The cops came by the office today.
00:29:19What cops?
00:29:20A very rude person named Swan.
00:29:22I know that bastard.
00:29:25He's capable of anything.
00:29:26What do they want?
00:29:28He's investigating Jerry's death.
00:29:29What'd you tell him?
00:29:30Not much.
00:29:31I don't know much.
00:29:32You didn't tell him about Whitby.
00:29:33I don't know anything about him.
00:29:35Except what I told you.
00:29:37Like I said, I don't know anything.
00:29:42Did my name come up?
00:29:44Of course not.
00:29:45Why would it?
00:29:46Whitby owns them.
00:29:48Everywhere you look, you see a conspiracy.
00:29:51This is a gigantic conspiracy.
00:29:59But that's not why I called.
00:30:03Then, why, Mr. Sharp?
00:30:07I just wanted to ask if you might want to go out with me sometime.
00:30:37She doesn't know anything.
00:30:58And just coming into view, some of the plumes occurring throughout the state.
00:31:17Well, after four weeks, that pile of tires out on Highway 6 is still smoldering.
00:31:25The plume of smoke, estimated at 30,000 feet high and over 50 miles long, is depositing pollutants,
00:31:31including known carcinogens, such as benzene, styrene, and butadiene, over a three-state area.
00:31:36And it's causing visibility problems out at the airport.
00:31:38Today's air quality index is poor, which means the elderly, the young, and those with respiratory illness should remain indoors.
00:31:45So, why would the city hire your firm?
00:31:49Don't they have attorneys of their own?
00:31:51Well, yes.
00:31:52But they have plenty to do on a day-to-day basis.
00:31:55And they're simply not equipped to handle a case of this magnitude.
00:32:00Or, I should say, cases.
00:32:03There have been so many families and individuals affected by these fires.
00:32:08At present, we have over a hundred cases filed against the city.
00:32:14And we're expecting a lot more.
00:32:18Do you have any kids?
00:32:21I'm sorry to say, my wife and I lost our only child when he was not much older than you, Emily.
00:32:28I'm so sorry.
00:32:30I didn't.
00:32:30I had no idea.
00:32:32Well, it was a long time ago.
00:32:35That may explain why I founded my charity.
00:32:39As a surrogate for that natural human inclination to nurture children.
00:32:46This guy really creeps me out.
00:32:48Did you see the way he was looking at you?
00:32:50Yeah, I wanted to puke.
00:32:52Your charity.
00:32:53Yes.
00:32:54I teach a course in business law at community college.
00:32:59It's my way of giving back, you know.
00:33:01He was scoping out Gareth, too.
00:33:03Oh, come on.
00:33:04He goes both ways.
00:33:06You say that about everybody.
00:33:08So I founded a scholarship to help recruit young people into law school.
00:33:15Have you ever considered law school, Emily?
00:33:20I got the vibe.
00:33:21Me, too.
00:33:22I did not get any vibe.
00:33:27You're just doing this to torture me.
00:33:30That's not true.
00:33:30No.
00:33:34How's it going, Ashley?
00:33:44Come on, get in.
00:33:44I want to talk to you.
00:33:46You're the chief of police.
00:33:47The kids said you were smart.
00:33:51Come on.
00:34:03I saw your interview.
00:34:04You got a lot of smart kids in your class.
00:34:08Yeah.
00:34:10Got a lot of promise.
00:34:11Got their whole lies ahead of them.
00:34:13Excuse me, is there a reason why you wanted to talk to me?
00:34:18I'm not under arrest or anything, am I?
00:34:23I can see why they like you.
00:34:25Got a great sense of humor.
00:34:26I heard about your charity.
00:34:33You know, I just teach one class at the high school.
00:34:36I don't have any authority over anything like that, so you might want to talk to the administration.
00:34:41Ain't no thing.
00:34:43But your kids, those are the ones I'm worried about.
00:34:46What do you mean?
00:34:46Do you think it's a good idea to have them pursuing something of this sensitivity?
00:34:53They choose their own topics.
00:34:54Yeah, but you're the teacher, Ashley.
00:34:58You bear a lot of responsibility for them.
00:35:00I'm aware of that.
00:35:02I mean, that fire scene, that's a dangerous place.
00:35:05They shouldn't be messing around out there.
00:35:08Look, their safety is my primary concern.
00:35:11Well, this is a big deal.
00:35:14There's a lot of money at stake, a lot of powerful people involved, lawsuits flying in every direction.
00:35:23I see what you mean.
00:35:25And I knew you would, because you're a smart guy.
00:35:32Stay safe, Ashley.
00:35:41So, like I said, these deaths have to be linked to a specific place or organization.
00:35:58That's how they control the insurance.
00:36:00They always have crazy big insurance.
00:36:02Anyway, that's why Whitby rushed in to claim all those suits.
00:36:05There's got to be 150 claims against the city already.
00:36:07And with each one of those claims, Whitby et al. opened a trust account.
00:36:14And then what?
00:36:16And then the money starts flowing.
00:36:18And you think Jerry was killed for the same reason?
00:36:20Well, it hardly matters from their point of view,
00:36:22but it's a dead certainty that his family has filed or will file a lawsuit
00:36:25or a claim against the city in the matter of Jerry's death.
00:36:29I just got to get myself out of this corner.
00:36:36Just what are you trying to prove?
00:36:54I don't know yet.
00:36:56My kid's soccer game is tonight.
00:36:58Soccer never queers.
00:37:00It's so beautiful, Al.
00:37:02Hey, would you mind taking a photograph of us, please?
00:37:05Definitely.
00:37:09Oh, wait, wait.
00:37:09We weren't ready yet.
00:37:11Let's try another one.
00:37:14That's good.
00:37:17So, tell me about your family.
00:37:22I don't have any.
00:37:23No wife or kids?
00:37:25No.
00:37:26My mother's still living.
00:37:27She's in Kansas City in a nursing home.
00:37:30Oh, is that where you're from?
00:37:32No.
00:37:36Any charities?
00:37:40Why would you ask that?
00:37:42Um, I don't know.
00:37:46I think that they're ready.
00:37:47Let's get back to the interview.
00:37:48So, how would you say the fires have affected the city?
00:38:00Good days, Sergeant.
00:38:02You're here a little early this month, aren't you?
00:38:06That ain't it.
00:38:09Well, then.
00:38:10That asshole Sharp is banging the lower woman.
00:38:16I thought you should know that.
00:38:17You mean Spencer Sharp?
00:38:19And he's seeing whom?
00:38:21The new auditor.
00:38:23I saw him out together looking pretty lovey-dovey.
00:38:28You know, Sergeant,
00:38:30I believe that man to be insane.
00:38:35Now, perhaps someone,
00:38:37I'm just thinking out loud here,
00:38:40someone with authority
00:38:42who has her best interests at heart
00:38:44might find a way to convey that viewpoint to her discreetly.
00:38:52How discreetly?
00:38:54Very, very discreetly.
00:38:58And, Sergeant,
00:39:08there'll be a little something extra for you this month.
00:39:13Gee, thanks.
00:39:15Wait till y'all see the footage I can pick up with these glasses.
00:39:28They're 4K.
00:39:29Let's just go ahead and look at the footage we already have, okay?
00:39:34Any charities?
00:39:37Why would you ask that?
00:39:38Um, I, I don't know.
00:39:44God, you're a terrible interviewer.
00:39:46Worse than me.
00:39:47Then why'd you make me do it?
00:39:49I'm sick of those sickos staring at my boobs.
00:39:52Well, this guy's definitely creepy.
00:39:55No.
00:39:56He's scared.
00:39:59Yeah.
00:40:00What makes you say that?
00:40:01Face it.
00:40:02Women are better than men at picking up emotional cues.
00:40:05Everybody knows that.
00:40:06That's sexist.
00:40:08Girls rule.
00:40:09Mm-hmm.
00:40:36It's fun.
00:40:38It's cool.
00:40:38Yeah.
00:41:08For the hundredth time, I wish you wouldn't smoke in here.
00:41:18They're getting it on.
00:41:20You're enjoying this.
00:41:21Don't be stupid. I got this direct from Whitby.
00:41:23Oh, in that case.
00:41:25You got something to say.
00:41:26Whitby tells us directly.
00:41:28Or Whitby tells the chief, who then tells us.
00:41:30I don't see the difference.
00:41:33That's what I thought.
00:41:35Get the drone.
00:41:38Fucking moron.
00:41:51You've told me a lot of things.
00:41:53But I don't have any way of verifying any of that information.
00:41:56And I don't even know what I would do with it if I could.
00:41:58You know, ever since my wife died, I haven't been able to even look at another woman.
00:42:08Until now.
00:42:09Wow.
00:42:12That's a lot to throw at me all at once.
00:42:14When did your wife die?
00:42:26Not quite three years ago.
00:42:27How did she die?
00:42:32I think he killed her.
00:42:35Whitby?
00:42:36Or had her killed.
00:42:38What happened?
00:42:40It was a rule to suicide.
00:42:42She was found hanging in our bedroom.
00:42:45Oh my God.
00:42:48She would never have killed herself.
00:42:49She was so full of life.
00:42:54We wanted to have a baby.
00:42:57She was a staff attorney in Whitby's firm.
00:43:00I think he was sending me a message.
00:43:03We weren't married very long.
00:43:05But I thought of her every day.
00:43:07Every single day.
00:43:09Until that Saturday we drove out to the lake.
00:43:12That day, I didn't think of her at all.
00:43:14Spencer, I don't know what to think.
00:43:22I've thought a lot of things.
00:43:25You've given me many impressions over the last few weeks, Mr. Sharp.
00:43:30Not all of them favorable.
00:43:35I keep getting a security alert.
00:43:39Why aren't you married?
00:43:43I was.
00:43:44Briefly.
00:43:46A long time ago.
00:43:48Tell me about it.
00:43:51There's not much to tell.
00:43:55I got pregnant right out of high school.
00:43:59And then we lost the baby.
00:44:03And that was pretty much it for us.
00:44:07What about since?
00:44:10Not really.
00:44:11I'm just always so busy.
00:44:17First with school.
00:44:20Then graduate school.
00:44:23And now this job.
00:44:24More trouble at the side of the tire fire on I-35 today.
00:44:50Apparently, some of the oil produced by the burning tires flowed underground to a nearby creek where it somehow caught on fire.
00:44:58Eyewitness News' Brenda Marchetta is on the scene.
00:45:01Brenda.
00:45:02Brenda?
00:45:03Rosario, Jeff, I'm here off of Highway 6 as close as they'll let us get.
00:45:09Apparently, the oil has been leaking for a while.
00:45:12Fire officials say arson is suspected.
00:45:14Some kids were reportedly seen in the area before the fire was reported.
00:45:18Rosario, back to you.
00:45:22So, Hayley, what are you going to do for Halloween?
00:45:25Nothing.
00:45:26I'm too old for Halloween.
00:45:27Oh, thank you.
00:45:29Thank you very much.
00:45:33Oh my gosh.
00:45:35I'm not a dog.
00:45:37I don't need to be able to search.
00:45:39I can't look at this.
00:45:41You're open.
00:45:43This is for me.
00:45:45Ow! He hurt!
00:45:47I'm sorry.
00:45:49Sit down.
00:45:51Sorry I'm late.
00:45:53Do we get to work with the Chief's charity kids?
00:45:55No.
00:45:57Why not?
00:46:01That guy creeps me out.
00:46:03Told you.
00:46:05Why? Because he's a cop.
00:46:07We have nothing to hide.
00:46:09It's not that.
00:46:11Then what?
00:46:13I don't think he's serious.
00:46:15About the video.
00:46:17Plus,
00:46:19it's an added responsibility
00:46:21when you take on a film project.
00:46:23And that's the responsibility to tell the truth.
00:46:27These other kids...
00:46:29I don't know.
00:46:31It's a responsibility that I don't want to take on
00:46:33and I don't want you guys to take on.
00:46:35Hey, put those away or they're mine.
00:46:37Sorry, it's a camera.
00:46:39We need the coverage.
00:46:41Let's try to focus.
00:46:43Shall we?
00:46:45How's your hammer hanging, Horace?
00:46:47You don't mind if we tape this interview, do you, Mr. Hughes?
00:46:51No. I mean, everything here is on record.
00:46:55On record.
00:46:57Yeah, right.
00:46:59Well, we're all in this together, aren't we?
00:47:01You didn't kill Jerry Leonard, did you?
00:47:07Just joking.
00:47:11We don't really think you killed him, do we, Steve?
00:47:13What we think is, you're the last person to see him alive
00:47:15that we know of, and we want to know what happened
00:47:17the last time you saw him.
00:47:19When would that have been?
00:47:21The day of. The fire.
00:47:23You know, of course.
00:47:25Uh, yeah, I...
00:47:27I might have seen Jerry that day.
00:47:29Yeah, I think I saw him that day in the morning, I think.
00:47:31You know, hang on a second.
00:47:33My secretary can check the calendar.
00:47:35We already talked to her.
00:47:37So, yeah.
00:47:43So, we met.
00:47:45What was your meeting about?
00:47:47I mean, it's been hectic around here ever since.
00:47:49Yeah, I bet.
00:47:51Pretty hectic for us, too.
00:47:52Yes.
00:47:53Yes, of course.
00:47:55We might have met about that, uh, fleet services business.
00:47:58The tires.
00:47:59I don't think he knew about that.
00:48:00At least Miss Lohr hadn't told him about it.
00:48:02She wouldn't be his only source of information on that.
00:48:05No, I guess not.
00:48:08So, what then?
00:48:10Well, that was it.
00:48:12We met, and he left.
00:48:14You didn't leave together with him?
00:48:17Because your secretary remembers you going out together?
00:48:20Yes.
00:48:21You know, we walked out together, and then I went to lunch.
00:48:23And I think, I guess, and he went out to the scene of that location.
00:48:27Probably so.
00:48:29Anything else you can think of that might help us?
00:48:33No.
00:48:34No, I don't think so.
00:48:35Any questions for us?
00:48:38Oh, yes.
00:48:39I mean, do you, you know, have any leads?
00:48:42I mean, do you have any suspects?
00:48:44I mean, how's the investigation going?
00:48:46It's hard to say.
00:48:47These little jaunts out into the countryside are starting to become a nuisance.
00:48:50Two cops came by the office asking about Jerry.
00:48:52Of course they did.
00:48:53It's a matter of cost.
00:48:54Well, this guy was pretty pushy.
00:48:55Who was it?
00:48:56Some sergeant named Swan.
00:48:57What's so funny?
00:48:58If Swan finds out anything of substance about Jerry's murder,
00:49:01it's a matter of cost.
00:49:03Well, this guy was pretty pushy.
00:49:05Who was it?
00:49:06Some sergeant named Swan.
00:49:08What's so funny?
00:49:11If Swan finds out anything of substance about Jerry's murder,
00:49:16I'll be the first to know, as per the standing orders of the chief.
00:49:21Oh, cool.
00:49:22Well, I happen to be the point man in this sensitive situation, Horace.
00:49:27You yourself made the decision to place me in the position of need to know.
00:49:32Oh, yeah.
00:49:33And one more thing before I go.
00:49:36A piece of advice.
00:49:39You need to contain yourself.
00:49:41Everything's working out just fine.
00:49:44You can go about your duties secure in the knowledge that you're handling the affairs of the city
00:49:50as scrupulously as you would your own.
00:49:54But how can I go around acting like nothing's wrong?
00:49:58Nothing is wrong.
00:50:01I've just been pulled over.
00:50:06I think it's a city cop.
00:50:07I'm at 4th Street.
00:50:08It's about 8.30 p.m.
00:50:09Step out of the car, sir.
00:50:14Look, I'm an attorney.
00:50:15I know who you are, asshole.
00:50:16Step out of the car.
00:50:17Okay.
00:50:18Boy, she's got a hot body.
00:50:32What are you talking about?
00:50:34Looks pretty good in that swimsuit.
00:50:36Mercedes?
00:50:37Bet she looks even better out of it.
00:50:39You better shut up about her.
00:50:41When was the last time you did LSD?
00:50:43What?
00:50:44Have a nice trip.
00:50:48Have a nice trip.
00:51:14Go!
00:51:16D go!
00:51:17Go!
00:51:18Go!
00:51:19Step out onto the naszych deixes.
00:51:21It left open to the sky in Levi.
00:51:25Soft tape.
00:51:26ину goes.
00:51:27Gadget, permissions.
00:51:28Move the stress
00:51:29and allow me to stay.
00:51:31Luke and join the r 63rd walk down distance.
00:51:33Kevin noss.
00:51:34Get down.
00:51:35It's Sunday.
00:51:36Hey!
00:51:38Gaius.
00:51:40Up the second.
00:51:42Hey!
00:51:44What's up, man?
00:51:46Hey!
00:51:48Hey!
00:51:50Hey!
00:51:52Hey!
00:51:54Hey!
00:51:56Hey!
00:51:58Hey!
00:52:00Hey!
00:52:02Hey!
00:52:04I want this shirt.
00:53:27I didn't know who else to call.
00:53:30¿But how did you end up here?
00:53:33Swan and his partner drug me.
00:53:37The cops drugged you?
00:53:39Yeah, then they beat me up and left me someplace I don't even know where I was.
00:53:42What's that?
00:53:49Anti-anxiety meds.
00:53:51I think I'm crazy.
00:53:53Give you a pill to solve all your problems.
00:53:55Hey, that's littering.
00:53:57Sorry.
00:54:00My car's broke no force.
00:54:09Is this French?
00:54:12Oh, I know.
00:54:15That's a salvage from the renovation of the Cathedral of St. Elizabeth
00:54:19in eastern Slovakia.
00:54:23It dates from the 13th century.
00:54:27It seems to have a subtle power.
00:54:31Strange and distinct.
00:54:34Yes, indeed.
00:54:35The problem with wealth and power is one can so quickly come up against the limits of what
00:54:44you can truly enjoy.
00:54:46Thus, one can begin to feel jaded.
00:54:51What do you give the man who has everything?
00:54:53That's always a problem.
00:54:58How about a ringside seat at a murder?
00:55:03Have you ever heard of necklacing?
00:55:05I don't believe I have.
00:55:07Well, it comes to us from South Africa.
00:55:11The ANC's wall against apartheid.
00:55:14Now, most people would consider that a righteous cause.
00:55:21But righteous causes have a way of...
00:55:25Well, you shall see.
00:55:27Why are you doing this?
00:55:34No!
00:55:35No!
00:55:37No!
00:55:37No!
00:55:38No!
00:55:39No!
00:55:40No!
00:55:40No!
00:55:41No!
00:55:42No!
00:55:42A very efficient way of putting a person to death, inexpensive and evidently very excruciating.
00:56:12Apparently.
00:56:14And it sends a message. A very powerful message.
00:56:19And you're saying that investors at a certain level get the opportunity to actually be on scene for something like this?
00:56:27Well, yes, but it may not be exactly this, you understand.
00:56:32The people we work with are artists, really. Very creative.
00:56:38Look how we got that fucking auditor.
00:56:44Look if you're gone, this stupid bitch.
00:56:48You don't mind chatting for a couple minutes, do you?
00:57:04What is it that you wanted to talk to me about, officer?
00:57:08Miss Laura, I don't think you've been completely candid with us.
00:57:12What are you talking about?
00:57:13When you said you weren't seeing anyone in particular.
00:57:16I'm not involved with anyone.
00:57:18See, Steve?
00:57:20Just what I mean.
00:57:21I don't think she's being 100% truthful.
00:57:26Not 100%.
00:57:27Do you know someone named Spencer Sharp?
00:57:29I don't think she's being 100% truthful.
00:57:30I don't think she's being 100% truthful.
00:57:31Not 100%.
00:57:32Do you know someone named Spencer Sharp?
00:57:33How dare you?
00:57:47Just doing our job.
00:57:49Who are you doing?
00:57:50Sure.
00:57:51I'm just so happy.
00:57:53Do you know someone named Spencer Sharp?
00:57:57How dare you?
00:58:00Just doing our job, and it's a damn dirty one.
00:58:04So I see.
00:58:06What exactly is your relationship with Mr. Sharp?
00:58:10We've met and talked a few times.
00:58:13He told me he had some information on the audit I was doing on fleet services.
00:58:17Oh yeah?
00:58:18Mm-hmm.
00:58:18What kind of information?
00:58:20Nothing relevant.
00:58:23Do you mind if I give you a little advice?
00:58:24This guy, Sharp, is bad news.
00:58:28Complete nutcase.
00:58:31You have no idea how many contacts we've had with him.
00:58:35A few years back, he had this personal tragedy.
00:58:37He kind of seemed to go around the bend.
00:58:39He started seeing conspiracies everywhere.
00:58:42Accusing people of all kinds of crazy shit.
00:58:46He's got all these charges hanging over his head.
00:58:48He's fixing to be disbarred.
00:58:51Here, he wound up in a loony bin again the other day.
00:58:53Why are you telling me all of this?
00:58:56Because this is a murder investigation.
00:58:59When someone lies to me in the course of a murder investigation, I get suspicious.
00:59:04Very suspicious.
00:59:06You could get in a lot of trouble.
00:59:09Hate to see that happen to a nice looking lady like you.
00:59:12I'm just trying to do you a favor.
00:59:21May I go?
00:59:22We're not detaining you.
00:59:24You might want to take a look at this, though.
00:59:28There's a lot of compromising footage in here.
00:59:32Comings and goings.
00:59:34Public displays of affection.
00:59:35Various stages of undress.
00:59:40This kind of thing gets around.
00:59:42It can reflect badly on you back in City Hall.
00:59:44Kind of a glass ceiling on your upper mobility.
00:59:46Mr. Swan, I had the strangest feeling the first time we met, and again today, that you were
00:59:59taking our conversation into areas that are not strictly professional.
01:00:04So let me get one thing straight.
01:00:07Just so there's no misunderstandings.
01:00:09Regardless of any relationship I may or may not have with Spencer Sharp, which remains, by
01:00:15the way, informal and nonspecific, I wouldn't go out with you if you were the last man on
01:00:22earth.
01:00:23Just so you know.
01:00:33Guess she told you.
01:00:36She's a lesbian.
01:00:37I don't understand why you felt it was necessary to bring an attorney to Mercedes.
01:01:07I'm ready to take this whole matter to the city attorney.
01:01:09And I wanted some outside advice on the personal injury aspect of this case.
01:01:13Where's this all going?
01:01:14I'm sure the police will become involved.
01:01:16And it's all there?
01:01:17Yes.
01:01:20And Jerry knew?
01:01:21Yes.
01:01:22Well, this is going to be a huge black guy.
01:01:38I don't think you're seeing the silver lining here, Horace.
01:01:40What?
01:01:41If Jerry accidentally or on purpose set the tires on fire while in commission of a felony,
01:01:46the city will have no liability for any damages resulting from the fire.
01:01:49You are here.
01:01:50Solely in an advisory capacity as a courtesy to Miss Lara.
01:01:53All right.
01:01:53And you may not speak unless spoken to.
01:01:55All right, Horace.
01:01:58Spencer?
01:01:58I'm good.
01:01:59Like he said.
01:02:02I thought you would be glad.
01:02:05I am.
01:02:06It'll save us a ton of money.
01:02:09We would have lost the advantages of having those cameras in our vehicles.
01:02:14Cameras?
01:02:14Yes.
01:02:16In city vehicles?
01:02:17Yes.
01:02:18In the dashboard.
01:02:19What for?
01:02:20Savings on insurance.
01:02:22Why didn't anybody tell me this?
01:02:23You signed off on it.
01:02:24The green savings program?
01:02:26I thought that was about saving the environment.
01:02:29It's about saving money.
01:02:31You know, greenbacks?
01:02:39What is it, Horace?
01:02:40The auditor's taking the tire deal to the city attorney.
01:02:43Good.
01:02:44Well, she was in my office today with that attorney, Spencer Sharp.
01:02:49Yeah?
01:02:50Well, she was saying that...
01:02:51Well, actually, he said that the city has no liability in regards to the fire.
01:02:56Huh?
01:02:57What do you mean?
01:02:59That since Jerry was committing a felony when he was killed, the city is free and clear.
01:03:04Well, that's a novel interpretation.
01:03:09Yes, but doesn't that mean all those lawsuits and everything?
01:03:11It doesn't mean that at all.
01:03:13It's going to take years and years to go through all of these.
01:03:17In the meantime, each and every one of these accounts is going to remain active.
01:03:23One more thing.
01:03:25Yes, Horace.
01:03:27Every city vehicle has a camera in the dashboard.
01:03:31A what?
01:03:32A camera.
01:03:33Viewing the occupants.
01:03:36What on earth for?
01:03:37Savings on insurance.
01:03:39That's a very grave oversight.
01:03:49A complete lapse of even the most ordinary level of discretion.
01:03:55Well, what are we going to do?
01:03:57I'll think of something.
01:04:05I'm going to be in need of your services.
01:04:27Now, come to the office.
01:04:29I have a package I want you to pick up.
01:04:32Very well.
01:04:33Horace Hughes just went out the private exit.
01:04:55Hold my calls and cancel my appointments for the next couple of hours.
01:04:59Horace, I have something rather urgent to finish up here.
01:05:06Horace?
01:05:09Horace, you are one sorry excuse for a human being.
01:05:13Are you aware, Chief, that all city vehicles have had cameras installed in them?
01:05:23Oh, yeah.
01:05:23Something to do with insurance.
01:05:24Yeah, and Horace Hughes has been driving around, pontificating about all sorts of sensitive matters.
01:05:32I never thought he was too bright.
01:05:34That's why I use my car whenever I can.
01:05:37Well, in a way, it's my fault.
01:05:40I always considered Horace a charity case.
01:05:43Well, you didn't misjudge your man.
01:05:46Sometimes if a man is not too dumb, but not too bright, he's easier to control.
01:05:51Makes a better bureaucrat.
01:05:55Hey, I know those kids.
01:05:57Oh, it's because you left the lens cap on, geniuses.
01:06:07It's too late to change our plans.
01:06:10They don't know anything.
01:06:12They'll corroborate our story if they have to.
01:06:15But it won't come to that.
01:06:16I'll put Swan and Howard on it, just to make sure.
01:06:19No, no, I have something else in mind for them.
01:06:23I don't want anything to happen to those kids.
01:06:26I like them.
01:06:27So do I.
01:06:32Oh, shit.
01:06:46Hi, Chief.
01:06:47Mr. Whitby.
01:06:48What are y'all doing out here?
01:06:50I was about to ask you the same thing.
01:06:52Turn that camera off.
01:06:56We're here on official police business.
01:06:59And you?
01:07:00We just needed a few more shots to finish up our documentary.
01:07:03Did Mr. Thompson say it was okay for you to be here?
01:07:06Yes.
01:07:06No.
01:07:07Uh, we didn't ask.
01:07:10Is he your teacher?
01:07:12Yes.
01:07:13Well, you're in a very dangerous place.
01:07:18Don't you kids know this is a federal Superfund site?
01:07:23Means the pollution is so severe.
01:07:25Your government's spending billions of dollars to clean it up.
01:07:28The fires are still burning.
01:07:31Our investigation is still active.
01:07:34It simply isn't a safe place for kids.
01:07:37I'm telling you this for your own good.
01:07:39Well, it's in their hands now.
01:08:03What'd they say?
01:08:05They're taking it straight to the district attorney.
01:08:08So what do we do now?
01:08:10I'm starving.
01:08:11It's working.
01:09:05How can you do this?
01:09:07You, sir, are guilty of gross negligence.
01:09:11You brought me into this in the first place!
01:09:13It wasn't for that fucking scholarship!
01:09:16No, no, no, Horace.
01:09:18Deep down in your corrupt little soul,
01:09:21you are just waiting for the chance.
01:09:23No!
01:09:25No, don't do this!
01:09:26Erase the audio.
01:09:34Erase the audio.
01:10:04There's a haze across the whole area,
01:10:09spread into the west.
01:10:11Right.
01:10:12You can see it.
01:10:14That is really impressive.
01:10:17City manager Horace Hughes was found dead today,
01:10:20an apparent suicide.
01:10:22His body was found at the scene of the burning tires,
01:10:24currently a federal Superfund site.
01:10:27Coincidentally, this is the same place
01:10:29where the body of former city auditor Jerry Leonard
01:10:31was found about two months ago.
01:10:34Let's go to Roger Harrington live on the scene.
01:10:37Well, Atanya, an unusual twist.
01:10:39Hughes' body was discovered by police chief Anibal Alcaraz,
01:10:42who was accompanied by attorney Alfred Whitby
01:10:44during a routine status check.
01:10:45At first, we didn't know what it was.
01:10:48It was really shocking.
01:10:51Anyway, I think this will bring
01:10:53some sort of closure to the community.
01:10:55Poor Horace.
01:10:57I've known him a long time.
01:11:00My charity helped put him through law school.
01:11:05Self-immolation.
01:11:06It's a terrible way to die.
01:11:11Just terrible.
01:11:15Well, this tragedy has reignited the pile of tires,
01:11:18and FEMA officials are saying
01:11:19it could set back mitigation efforts by months.
01:11:22LaTanya?
01:11:23I don't think I totally believed you
01:11:24until this very moment.
01:11:26Let's get out of here.
01:11:33Have you or a loved one been injured at work
01:11:35or been hurt in a car wreck or truck accident?
01:11:46How can I help you, Mr. Whitby?
01:11:48I'd like you to find out something for me.
01:11:51Do car rental agencies routinely install cameras
01:11:55in their cars for insurance purposes?
01:11:58I know the answer to that one.
01:11:59Yes.
01:12:01How do you know?
01:12:02I rented a car last weekend,
01:12:04and that's what they told me.
01:12:05Really?
01:12:07And is this industry-wide?
01:12:10I don't know.
01:12:11I'll find out.
01:12:12Shouldn't take long.
01:12:13Great.
01:12:14Thank you very much.
01:12:15You've made my day.
01:12:17Great.
01:12:17And, Helen, how's school going?
01:12:20Oh, it's going great,
01:12:22but Professor Green is really kicking my butt on torts.
01:12:24Oh, he's tough, all right.
01:12:26But so are you.
01:12:27And besides, there are far too many frivolous lawsuits.
01:12:42It's as I feared.
01:12:44Can you not use a little initiative?
01:12:49Use your imagination,
01:12:51a little creativity,
01:12:52a little problem-solving.
01:12:53Do I have to think of everything?
01:12:56Yeah.
01:12:57Take him out to the Slaughter Creek turnaround.
01:13:05You know, that little road off I-35?
01:13:09I'll be there in an hour.
01:13:10I can't believe this shit.
01:13:18Slow down.
01:13:20A few fucking cameras.
01:13:23Who gives a fuck about a few fucking cameras?
01:13:25This is it.
01:13:27You've got so many fucking cameras shooting,
01:13:29so much fucking video,
01:13:30you could never look at it all.
01:13:31Turn here.
01:13:31Siendo la diferencia de la noche,
01:13:35sueño de besar a su tondita.
01:14:01What are you doing?
01:14:13Commemorating the moment.
01:14:14Oh, we'll delete it.
01:14:15I don't want this all over the internet.
01:14:16Jeez, all right.
01:14:31I don't know why I didn't think of this before.
01:14:37You can't think of everything.
01:14:42Okay, all right.
01:14:42I'm deleting it.
01:14:45It wasn't supposed to be this way.
01:14:48And now we're making lemonade
01:14:50out of the lemons life's chosen to offer us,
01:14:53to quote a very tired metaphor.
01:14:56I've explained to you, Horace,
01:14:58that the more lawsuits, the better.
01:15:00Like you said,
01:15:02no one can think of everything.
01:15:10Okay.
01:15:11Where is that bastard?
01:15:14Call him.
01:15:17I want to be out here in front of God and everybody.
01:15:22We're feeling pretty exposed out here.
01:15:24I'm almost there.
01:15:30Did you get it?
01:15:58Beautiful.
01:16:01Okay, let's go.
01:16:08You guys are here early?
01:16:09Oh, yeah, um, what's this?
01:16:15Oh, um, it's our final footage for our documentary.
01:16:20So you guys went back out there to the fire, didn't you?
01:16:24Yeah.
01:16:24That was stupid.
01:16:25We're here on official police business.
01:16:29And you?
01:16:30We just needed a few more shots to finish up our documentary.
01:16:33Did Mr. Thompson say it was okay for you to be here?
01:16:35Yes.
01:16:36No.
01:16:36Uh, we didn't ask.
01:16:39Awesome.
01:16:39Is he your teacher?
01:16:41Yes.
01:16:42Well, you're in a very dangerous place.
01:16:45Rosario, police and fire officials are now seeing that last week's wildfire,
01:16:50which claimed the lives of Sergeant Roy Swan and Detective Steve Howard, was no accident.
01:16:55That's right, Jeff, and charges of arson and murder were filed this morning against three
01:17:00Kennedy High School students, 17-year-old LaDamian Hicks and Ahmaud Green and Raymond
01:17:06Shepard, both 18.
01:17:08Police say they were trying to cook methamphetamine and they let the fire get out of control.
01:17:13The identity of the third body found in the police cruiser has not been determined.
01:17:19Thank you for agreeing to meet with us.
01:17:21To what do I owe the pleasure?
01:17:24Mr. Whitby.
01:17:25My friends call me Whit.
01:17:28I wouldn't pretend that we're friends.
01:17:31I respect you.
01:17:33I fear you.
01:17:34Well, now.
01:17:35I wanted to come by here to let you know.
01:17:38I'll be letting my license to practice law lapse in this state.
01:17:41And I'll be pursuing my license in another state.
01:17:45We might even go overseas.
01:17:47Frankly, we just want to go far away and live happily ever after.
01:17:50That's a very lofty aspiration.
01:17:53But, first, I need your help with the charges that have been filed against me.
01:17:58You want me to represent you?
01:18:02No.
01:18:03I want you to make the charges go away.
01:18:05Oh, you must think I'm a very powerful man.
01:18:11You are.
01:18:15We're hoping this might help persuade you.
01:18:18Yes?
01:18:19Those are some links to the city webpage.
01:18:21Where the dash cam videos are stored.
01:18:24Your conversations with Horace Hughes aren't necessarily proof of any crimes on your part, but...
01:18:28What are you suggesting?
01:18:30It's all up there on the webpage for anyone to see.
01:18:36Although, in that mass of data, you'd have to know what you were looking for.
01:18:42And to delete it would leave a digital footprint.
01:18:48Might as well let it be.
01:18:49I think I can help you with your legal matters, Mr. Sharp.
01:19:02As for the other, a peaceful life and after a long interval, an easeful death,
01:19:09that's about as much as anyone can wish for.
01:19:18Good luck.
01:19:21Welcome back to the show.
01:19:23I've got an important update to a story that we followed throughout the close of last year.
01:19:26The Evergreen City Tire Fire destroyed over a thousand homes and left more than a dozen dead,
01:19:31including one by an alleged self-immolation.
01:19:34And after all that, what did the investigation give us?
01:19:36A handful of low-level indictments, allegations of fraud against the city,
01:19:40and lingering suspicions about some sort of government cover-up.
01:19:44But after all of that, the man at the heart of that investigation, Alfred Whitby,
01:19:47who many consider the most powerful attorney in the state,
01:19:50a man still carrying the baggage of an investigation that left us with more questions and answers,
01:19:54is now running for governor.
01:19:55Professor Thompson.
01:20:11Hi, I'm Lee Thompson.
01:20:13I'm Alfred Whitby, an attorney here in town.
01:20:17I know who you are.
01:20:18I saw your interview.
01:20:20Oh, of course.
01:20:23And you are the young people's teacher.
01:20:28You must know that the liabilities to the city arising from that terrible fire
01:20:35have increased exponentially.
01:20:42Yes.
01:20:43And as the legal representative for the city in all matters arising from that fire,
01:20:51I must take every contingency into consideration.
01:20:57Of course.
01:20:58You may call it an abundance of caution or even an overabundance.
01:21:03But I feel duty-bound to ask you if I may review the documentary made by your students.
01:21:15Monday, August 27th.
01:21:18A devastating fire forever changed our city.
01:21:21As a result of a horrible crime of theft, arson, and murder,
01:21:3614 people lost their lives,
01:21:38and our city has been fouled with pollution that affects the health of every one of us.
01:21:44The consequences of these selfish acts have fallen disproportionately on the poor and the powerless.
01:21:49These children represent the future, a new generation, and now they are lost.
01:21:57The loss of lives in this tragedy, particularly the little children, is tragic.
01:22:05But God forbid it could have been a whole lot worse if not for the heroism
01:22:08and the quick thinking of our first responders.
01:22:15Before this happened, we weren't ready for anything like this.
01:22:17When my firefighters got up there to Santa Isabel that day,
01:22:20and there were no fire hydrants,
01:22:22all they could do was stand there and watch.
01:22:26The whole city bears responsibility.
01:22:29City government is taking some steps towards seeing that such a tragedy could never happen again.
01:22:34That area had always been an anomaly.
01:22:36It lay outside the city limits and had no city services.
01:22:39Now, the city is moving to annex that area right now,
01:22:42so hopefully when we redevelop, we'll do it right this time.
01:22:53Very commendable.
01:22:56They don't appear to have used any of my interview.
01:23:00Well, I guess you didn't make the cut.
01:23:10Well, I certainly don't see any threat to the city's interests here.
01:23:15You've got a smart group of kids there, Mr. Thompson.
01:23:21I wonder if I may ask you one more thing.
01:23:28Sure.
01:23:30I wonder, just to be sure,
01:23:35may I view the raw footage?
01:23:40We erased it at the end of the semester.
01:23:43Well, in that case, I thank you for your time.
01:24:03It's time I made some plans
01:24:06Gotta take down, I'll build it back up again
01:24:10I'm gonna raise my guns
01:24:13Take you on, take you on
01:24:17I know I've been a fool
01:24:20There ain't a thing I've done I cannot do
01:24:25I'm gonna make it up
01:24:28Make it up
01:24:30Take it up
01:24:32Still I wonder where you're running
01:24:36Hey, I'm taking the shot
01:24:39Like it or not
01:24:41Like it or not
01:24:43Cause you know
01:24:45You're all that I got
01:24:47Ready or not
01:24:49Ready or not
01:24:51You're all that I got
01:24:55Set this thing on fire
01:25:02Yeah, I light it up
01:25:04Light it up
01:25:05Nothing ever feels so right
01:25:07Do we get a second chance
01:25:10And again, again, again, again, again
01:25:14I got a sandwich, but it's just my stuff
01:25:18I get so greedy
01:25:19I could never, ever have it
01:25:22No, I'll just be broken
01:25:23With my head in my hands
01:25:27Again
01:25:28Still I wonder where you're running
01:25:33Hey, I'm taking the shot
01:25:35Hey, I'm taking the shot
01:25:36Like it or not
01:25:38Like it or not
01:25:40Cause you know
01:25:41You're all that I got
01:25:43Ready or not
01:25:45Ready or not
01:25:47You're all that I got
01:25:52Yeah, I'll just be ingrat
01:25:59I'm taking the shot
01:26:01ём
