Off the coast of Japan’s Yonaguni Island lies one of the most puzzling underwater discoveries ever made. Massive terraces, sharp angles, steps carved into stone, and geometric structures create the appearance of an ancient lost city resting beneath the waves.

But is Yonaguni a natural formation shaped by erosion… or the remains of a forgotten civilization that existed thousands of years ago?

In this video, we explore:
🔹 The discovery of the underwater monument
🔹 The impressive architecture of the site
🔹 The debate: natural formation or human-made ruins?
🔹 Global parallels with other submerged ancient structures
🔹 The ongoing mystery that continues to puzzle scientists and divers
Dive deep into one of Japan’s greatest archaeological enigmas — a place where history, myth, and geology collide.

00:00Off the coast of Yonaguni Island at the southern tip of Japan lies one of the most enigmatic
00:05discoveries in modern archaeology. Beneath just a few dozen feet of water, gigantic structures
00:12rise up like the remains of a forgotten city. Monumental steps, perfectly straight walls,
00:19terraces and platforms. Some see them as a work of nature, others believe they are the remnants
00:24of a civilization lost for millennia. Today, let's dive together into the heart of the Yonaguni
00:30mystery. The story begins in 1986. Kihachiro Aratake, a local diver, was exploring the waters
00:39around Yonaguni when he spotted strange geometric shapes on the seabed—immense flat surfaces,
00:45staircases that seemed carved into the rock, and nearly perfect right angles. Intrigued,
00:51he alerted researchers, who soon realized the structure was unlike anything known in the region.
00:57Very quickly, the scientific world began to wonder, what is an underwater pyramid doing in Japan?
01:03The so-called Yonaguni Pyramid is about 250 feet long and 80 feet high. You can clearly see wide
01:11horizontal platforms, staircases with regular steps, terraces reminiscent of prehistoric constructions,
01:18and even an area nicknamed the stadium, which looks surprisingly like an amphitheater.
01:24The stone is all one piece, a massive monolith. The shapes seem too precise to be a simple geological
01:31accident. And yet, some scientists argue that ocean currents and erosion could be enough to explain
01:37these surprisingly geometric forms. This brings us to the two main theories. Theory 1,
01:43a natural formation. According to several geologists, Yonaguni is made of sandstone that naturally fractures
01:51into rectangular blocks. For them, the ocean carved these steps and terraces over centuries,
01:57creating the illusion of human architecture. Then there's theory 2, the work of an ancient
02:04civilization. Professor Masaki Kimura, one of the most dedicated researchers on the project,
02:09proposes that the structure was modified, or even entirely built, by humans. He claims to have
02:15identified what could be roads, aligned walls, and even traces of carvings on the rock. According to
02:22him, Yonaguni could date back more than 10,000 years, to a time when the sea level was much lower.
02:29If confirmed, this would make this sunken city one of the oldest structures ever built by humans.
02:34But no definitive proof has yet been found. No tools, no artifacts, no remains clearly
02:41attributable to human activity. Yonaguni isn't the only underwater enigma on the planet. We can
02:47think of the submerged ruins of Dwarka in India, the sunken city of Pavlopetri in Greece, and the
02:52mysterious structures off the coast of Cuba. These sites remind us that the oceans still hold traces
02:58of forgotten civilizations, swallowed by rising waters at the end of the last ice age. Could
03:04Yonaguni be another piece of this gigantic puzzle? Even today, teams of divers visit the site every
03:11year. The analysis continues, but the mystery remains completely unsolved. Is it a natural
03:17formation that perfectly mimics human construction? Or the remains of an ancient culture for which we have
03:24no written record? Whatever the answer, Yonaguni reminds us of something essential.
03:30The vast majority of our history still lies beneath the oceans, hidden from our view.
03:36The mystery of Yonaguni remains one of the most fascinating of our time. A colossal, perfectly
03:42geometric structure, located in one of the country's richest in ancient myths. Nature or forgotten
03:48civilization? Perhaps the truth lies somewhere in between. What's certain is that Yonaguni continues
03:55to fuel our imagination and invites us to see the ocean as a huge, unexplored museum.
