00:58:08When I was little, the first thing I wanted to be, obviously, was a princess, then a barrister.
00:58:13Then I realised I just wanted to wear the costume. Maybe I actually want to be an actor.
00:58:19ER came calling, and it changed my life. It really was a family.
00:58:25And I stayed for 22 years!
00:58:28Los Angeles and ER have been a colossal, definitive part of her life,
00:58:33and to leave them behind was not straightforward. It wasn't easy.

00:58:45My daughter was born in America. I had finished ER. I had met my husband, Jonathan.
00:58:52I'd started commuting to do Doctor Who, and Jonathan was doing a very long commute to LA.
00:58:58I was doing a very long commute to LA.
00:58:59And there's a point at which you just go, we need to be together.
00:59:02Jonathan is just the most incredible human being.
00:59:07He gets me in a way that nobody else really has.
00:59:11He writes me poetry, and he also will learn a poem, and then just recite it to me.
00:59:19Do you remember from our wedding?
00:59:20Oh my gosh!
00:59:21It had become a fairy girl with blossoms in her golden hair,
00:59:26who called me by her name, then ran and faded through the brightening air.
00:59:32I'm insanely proud of her. And it's extraordinary to me to think that only a year ago, Alex was really not well.
00:59:47I was diagnosed with a uterine cancer. I had to go in and have a full hysterectomy.
00:59:54Then they found out that the cancer had moved. I had to have radiotherapy.
01:00:00So coming off the back of that, getting the all clear, I decided that I would do Strictly.
01:00:06When I watch her dance, I think, you know, thank you for being so brave.

01:00:16It's just an incredible gift that I will take with me till the end of my days.
