A long-silent volcano in northern Ethiopia erupted on Sunday, sending massive ash plumes across the Red Sea toward Yemen, Oman, and even India. The Hayli Gubbi volcano, quiet for nearly 12,000 years, erupted for hours and covered Afdera village in ash. Experts called it unusual, noting the region is poorly studied. Volcanologist Arianna Soldati said dormant volcanoes can still erupt if magma conditions persist.

00:00Today, a sleeping giant in Ethiopia has awakened, after nearly 12,000 years of silence.
00:14The Hayali Gubi volcano, unknown to many and barely studied by scientists, erupted with enormous force, sending ash 14 kilometers into the sky and spreading it across continents.
00:29From Yemen and Oman, all the way to India and Pakistan.
00:34So, the question everyone is asking, why now? What triggered this ancient volcano to erupt?
00:42A volcano in Ethiopia's northeastern region erupted for the first time in nearly 12,000 years, sending thick plumes of ash high above the Red Sea.
00:54The Hayali Gubi volcano sits in Ethiopia's Afar region, about 800 kilometers northeast of Addis Ababa, near the Eritrean border.
01:04It erupted for several hours on Sunday, towering above the desert landscape.
01:09Hayali Gubi rises only about 500 meters, but it sits in one of Earth's most active geological zones, the East African Rift, where the African and Arabian plates are slowly pulling apart.
01:24Experts say the eruption is highly unusual because the region's volcanoes are still poorly understood.
01:35The Smithsonian's Global Volcanism Program says Hayali Gubi has no recorded eruptions in the Holocene the past 12,000 years.
01:45Volcanologist Simon Carn confirmed the volcano has no record of Holocene eruptions, while researcher Ariana Soldati reminds us,
01:55volcanoes can still erupt after millennia if magma conditions remain.
02:02Scientists had already seen warning signs.
02:05In July, the nearby Ertaele volcano erupted, triggering ground movement beneath Hayali Gubi.
02:13Sensors detected magma intrusion nearly 30 kilometers below the surface, along with ground uplift and strange white puffy clouds at the summit.
02:24Researchers on the ground collected ash samples to determine the magma type.
02:29Their findings may confirm whether Hayali Gubi was truly dormant for millennia, or simply unrecorded.
02:38Local officials report no casualties, but ash faller threatens pastoral communities across the Afar region, where resources were already scarce.
02:49And that's why a volcano silent for thousands of years suddenly roared to life.
02:55Scientists say this eruption is a reminder that the East African Rift remains one of the most active tectonic regions on the planet,
03:05and that many of its volcanoes are still mysteries.
03:09So thank you.
