00:14And here I am, a 37-year-old woman, and you still make me feel like a stupid, fat little

00:21kid.

00:22But to achieve her on-screen success, the actress had to suffer through a string of real-life

00:26tragedies, from family drama and heartbreaking issues related to her weight, to a failed

00:31marriage and financial strain, Metz has gone through a lot over the years.

00:35But it's all made her into the stunningly inspirational woman she is today.

00:39Here's her real-life story.

00:41An absent father

00:43When Metz was just eight years old, her father, Mark, reportedly left her mother, according

00:47to the Daily Mail.

00:49In January 2018, Metz revealed to People that she touches on her relationship with her father

00:53in her memoir, This Is Me.

00:55She said,

00:56There is a chapter about our lack of relationship and trying to establish one, but I realized

01:00that you can only hope that people will want to have a relationship with you.

01:04She told Today that she's not currently in touch with her father, saying,

01:07I would love to have a relationship with him.

01:10He's really a great guy, but just because he's my father doesn't mean I have to have

01:14a relationship with him.

01:16An abusive stepfather

01:18After Metz's parents split, her mother eventually married Creighton Hodge, a man Metz called

01:22Trigger.

01:23While Trigger was reportedly loving to his biological children, he kept Metz at a distance, allegedly

01:28criticizing her weight at every turn.

01:31Metz wrote in her memoir,

01:32My body seemed to offend him, but he couldn't help but stare, especially when I was eating.

01:37Metz, who grew up poor, attributed her eating habits to her family's previous lack of food.

01:42She explained,

01:43Unfortunately, Trigger's alleged behavior went beyond hurtful stares.

01:54In her book, Metz claimed he physically harmed her, writing,

01:57Trigger never punched my face, just my body, the thing that offended him so much.

02:02He shoved me, slapped me, punched my arm.

02:04He would hit me if he thought I looked at him wrong.

02:06I remember being on the kitchen floor after he knocked me over, and I was begging to know

02:10what I did.

02:11He just shoved me hard with his foot.

02:13According to Metz, Trigger was emotionally abusive as well, claiming that when she was

02:1714 years old, he started making her weigh herself in front of him.

02:21He'd get the scale from the bathroom and clang it hard on the kitchen floor.

02:24Well, get on the damn thing, Trigger would yell.

02:29Her failed marriage

02:30Before she gained celebrity status on This Is Us, Metz endured a tough divorce.

02:35She married British screenwriter Martin Eden, but according to Radar Online after five years

02:39of marriage, the couple called it quits in 2013.

02:42Just because we got married doesn't mean that we had to be miserable trying to fix it if

02:47it just wasn't — either you grow together or you grow apart.

02:51Eden reportedly filed for divorce in November 2014, citing irreconcilable differences.

02:57But Metz allegedly didn't respond to the court filing.

03:00Instead, the actress is said to have ignored the filing altogether.

03:03It was then that Eden asked the court to declare that his divorce was uncontested.

03:07And in December 2015, the split became official.

03:18Metz revealed to Glamour in 2017 that she was broke before she snagged the gig on This

03:24Is Us.

03:25Despite having booked a recurring role as Ima Barbara Wiggles in American Horror Story's

03:29fourth season, she couldn't find much work in Hollywood.

03:33She said,

03:34I kept auditioning with no savings and no money, credit card debt gaining interest.

03:37I went on unemployment.

03:39I bought ramen noodles at dollar stores."

03:41Recalling her financial situation before This Is Us, Metz told Jimmy Fallon,

03:45You had extra money.

03:4681 cents in your bank account?

03:47Yeah, 81 cents when I booked the show.

03:50Since raking in some serious cash with her acting career, Metz has since paid back all her

03:54debts.

03:55Losing her close friend

03:57While Metz has famously coped with the loss of her TV father on the small screen, the actress

04:01also grieved the passing of a loved one in real life.

04:05During an appearance on E!'s Hollywood Medium with Tyler Henry, Metz revealed that the life

04:09of one of her friends had been cut short and was under investigation.

04:12It's basically a feeling of, like, it's not fair that my life's taken from me when it is.

04:17That's exactly right.

04:18According to Henry, Metz will find peace after the loss of her friend.

04:21He said,

04:22Despite the hardships, Metz has been able to move on with her life, and look toward to

04:35the future.

04:36She told People,

04:37Metz is also happy to be able to portray a woman of her size on the small screen, telling

04:52It seems so silly that it's taken this long, but people are finally getting to see themselves
