00:46Austin Butler was born in Anaheim, California on August 17, 1991.
00:50He started off his acting career at a young age after he was approached by a background
00:54talent agency rep at the Orange County Fair at just 13 years old.
00:58He attended public school until 7th grade when he began home school to better accommodate
01:03his work schedule.
01:04Austin received plenty of background roles before his career really took off.
01:08In 2005, he landed his first regular job as background actor playing Lionel Scranton on
01:13Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide for two seasons.
01:16It was this role that helped him launch his career as a series actor.
01:20While on the show, one of the main cast members and Butler's friend, Lindsay Shaw, introduced
01:24him to her manager, Pat Cutler, who signed him and helped him launch his career.
01:28In 2007, Austin kicked off his career with lots of guest star appearances and smaller roles
01:33in series like the role of Derek Hansen in Hannah Montana and Jake Crandall in iCarly.
01:39Finally in July of 2009, he had a lead role in the 20th Century Fox family adventure movie
01:44Aliens in the Attic.
01:46That same summer, Butler appeared in the starring role of Jordan Gallagher on the popular but
01:51short-lived ABC family series, Ruby and the Rockets.
01:54In 2010, Austin was busy.
01:56February he landed a recurring role as Jones in Life Unexpected and that same month he
02:01appeared in Wizards of Waverly Place and in June he was in two episodes of Jonas starring
02:06the Jonas Brothers.
02:07In December, he guest starred in an episode of CSI Miami and The Defenders.
02:12He co-starred alongside Ashley Tisdale in Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure, a role he received due to
02:17Ashley herself calling him to come and audition for the role of love interest Peyton Levitt.
02:22The movie was released in April 2011.
02:24In June of 2011, Switched at Birth premiered on ABC with Austin playing the role of Wyke.
02:30That same year, he signed on to play the lead role of Zach Garvey in Lifetime TV movie The
02:35Bling Ring, which is based on the true story of a group of teens that were responsible for
02:39a string of robberies at celebrities' homes.
02:412011 was also the year that Austin Butler and high school musical star Vanessa Hudges
02:46began dating.
02:47The two were seen packing on the PDA and shortly after confirmed the relationship.
02:51The pair hit it off right away and would go on strong for quite some time.
02:55In March of 2012, Butler was cast in the Sex and the City prequel The Carrie Diaries
03:00as Sebastian Kidd.
03:01The series is based on the novel by Candace Bushwell that follows a young Carrie Bradshaw through
03:06life as a New York teen in the 80s.
03:08The show was on for two seasons before it was cancelled in 2014.
03:12Also in 2014, it was announced that Butler would be joining the cast of the play The Death
03:16of the Author.
03:17The play was shown at Geffen Playhouse in LA and the show ran from May 28th to June 29th.
03:22In September of 2014, it was announced that Austin had joined the cast of Arrow as the
03:26recurring character Chase.
03:28Also in 2014, he co-starred with Miranda Cosgrove and Tom Sizemore in the thriller film The Intruders.
03:34In 2016, he appeared in Kevin Smith's horror comedy Yoga Hosers.
03:38The film starred celebrities like Johnny Depp, Lily Rose Depp, Harley Quinn Smith, and Hailey
03:43Jo Osment.
03:44Also in 2016, he began playing the role of Will Omsford in The Shannara Chronicles, MTV's
03:49television adaption of the Terry Brooks novel The Elfstones of Shannara.
03:53The show lasted for two seasons until it was cancelled in January 2018.
03:58In March of 2018, Butler made his Broadway debut, playing Don Parrott in The Iceman Cometh.
04:04Previews for the show began March 26th and it ran until July 1st, 2018.
04:08Hilton Owls reviewed the play in The New Yorker and said although there were many performers
04:13in George C. Wolf's staging of Eugene O'Neill's phenomenal drama The Iceman Cometh,
04:17there was only one actor, and his name is Austin Butler.
04:20A pretty fabulous praise for your Broadway debut.
04:23In July 2019, Butler appeared in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood as a fictional version
04:28of Manson Family member Tex Watson.
04:30So where is he now?
04:32In 2019, Austin was cast in his most life and career changing role he's ever had.
04:37It was announced that Butler was going to be playing musical legend Elvis Presley in
04:41the upcoming biopic about the singer's life.
04:43The film was directed by Baz Luhrmann.
04:46Plenty of people were wondering when they found out why in the world would they cast this
04:49blonde actor from California to play this rock and roll legend with an iconic
04:53southern drawl and dark hair.
04:55Butler knew he had big shoes and an even bigger jumpsuit to fill.
04:58Everyone knows Elvis.
05:00Fan or not, how could you forget the dance moves, the outfits, the songs, his voice?
05:05Austin put two years of his life on hold and began his obsession.
05:08Butler perfected Elvis' iconic southern drawl by listening to hours and hours of footage
05:13from shows and interviews with the king of rock and roll himself.
05:16He said that he created his own sort of archive of how Elvis says every word and vowel along
05:22with the help of a dialect coach, Butler would practice and practice lines of dialogue until
05:27he got the voice to match.
05:29He revealed in an interview with Jimmy Fallon that he even took the time to study the changes
05:33in Presley's voice over the years and switch it up according to the decade.
05:37Talking like Elvis was only a small part of becoming the rock and roll icon.
05:41Butler recorded all of the songs for the film with his own vocals as well as mimic the iconic,
05:46big and bold moves Elvis did on stage to a tee.
05:49For months every day, Butler would practice singing and he states that his singing voice
05:53has greatly improved since the film.
05:56During the filming of Elvis, Austin Butler and longtime girlfriend Vanessa Hudges decided
06:00to split after almost a decade together.
06:03Sources say that while he was working on Elvis, she was filming in Europe for her film The Princess
06:07Switch and the two decided to break it off.
06:09The two left things on good terms and went their separate ways.
06:12I'm sure it would be hard enough to juggle that long distance relationship and quite literally
06:17trying to become Elvis Presley.
06:19Shortly after their breakup, Butler was seen with Kaya Gerber and the pair made an official
06:24debut together at the 2022 Met Gala.
06:26Hudges also has a new man in her life, Pittsburgh pilot baseball player Cole Tucker.
06:31So the two are both happy and doing their thing.
06:34Back to Elvis.
06:35I feel like biopics like this are usually either an absolute smash hit or hated by everyone.
06:40So I'm sure Austin was feeling the pressure.
06:42The film premiered on May 26th at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.
06:47After the film, it received a 12 minute long standing ovation from the audience, the longest
06:52of this year's festival.
06:53It also received critical acclaim and praise from the Presley family themselves.
06:57The film was released in theaters on June 24th, 2022 and I think it's safe to say the
07:02movie is a success.
07:04People were impressed by Butler's portrayal of Elvis and how committed he was to the role.
07:07Coming up next for Butler, he was cast last year as the lead in the war drama miniseries,
07:12masters of the air.
07:13Butler is also set to play Feyd Rautha in the upcoming science fiction film Dune Part 2.
07:18It seems that things are going pretty good right now for Austin Butler, new girlfriend,
07:23successfully playing the king of rock and roll, and new projects on the way.
07:27What do you think?
07:28Did Austin do Elvis justice?
07:29Was all the preparation worth it?
