00:00:00okay the Renaissance was a time of rebirth and rediscovery a time when
00:00:09artists took a fresh look at the world in which they lived and these artists
00:00:13helped to rekindle a sense of adventure and romance as they struck out to
00:00:17discover things about themselves in the world that they had never taken a close
00:00:21look at before now during this period each city had a school of art with its
00:00:31own style and approach but all were dedicated to a feeling for the
00:00:36individual the personal emotions and beauty now this can best be seen in the
00:00:43work of Tizianello a contemporary of Veronese and Tintoretto
00:00:50all of these painters explored light and dark with their use of color and
00:01:15composition they were trying to illustrate the diversity of human nature and
00:01:20human individuality the way in which all of us have a light side and a dark side
00:01:24to our nature oh that sounds a little pretentious okay it's the right idea just
00:01:30try and not be so serious about it okay lady in reflection illustrates that
00:01:35essential quality it also reminds us that the face we show the world is often
00:01:43different from our true self now despite the impression of vanity Tizianello
00:01:50Tizianello's interest was in showing that true beauty comes from within
00:01:54Miss Jamison the rest of the campus is under the impression it's summer break
00:01:58the rest of the campus don't have a doctoral thesis to deliver this fall and besides my

00:02:07what kind of a summer is that my dear you are without a doubt our brightest graduate student
00:02:14your scholarly instincts are remarkable but a work of art depends as much on what we bring to it
00:02:22as what the artist gives us to look at art is only a reflection of life Miss Jamison
00:02:29it is necessary for us to have a life before we can truly appreciate it you need to show your true
00:02:38face to the world maybe after I have my PhD well right now I need you to join the class outside
00:02:49oh not another group picture just say sorry I forgot to advance the film now now Miss Jamison

00:09:01Oh.
00:09:06Maybe you should just lay off.
00:09:08Oh, if I need it, I take it.
00:09:10If I don't, I don't.
00:09:12You've been drinking all night.
00:09:14Why don't you get a life, Kim, so you don't envy mine?
00:09:18Because I don't envy alcoholics, Kate.
00:09:20I work hard.
00:09:22It steadies my nerves.
00:09:24By now, you ought to be steady enough to climb Mount Everest.
00:09:27Cut the sarcasm, Kim.
00:09:28It doesn't suit your image.
00:09:30The way falling down drunk suits yours?
00:09:31Oh, God, Kate, I'm so sorry.
00:09:39Look, I'm in trouble, OK?
00:09:40Are you satisfied?
00:09:44I arrive late at photo sessions.
00:09:47I can't walk straight sometimes.
00:09:50I need one of these, or I can't even remember where I'm supposed to be.
00:09:54I want to stop, but I'm not strong enough.
00:10:01Well, you don't have to do this alone.
00:10:02There's a good rehab center here.
00:10:04I can't.
00:10:05My career would be over in a week.
00:10:08Come on.
00:10:08Recovery's a status symbol.
00:10:10Everybody who's anybody is coming back from something.
00:10:12This is Jacqueline Kim, little Miss Young and Ruthless.
00:10:26She wants to be the next Chambertan cover girl.
00:10:30If they found out I was drawing out, she'd take my place.
00:10:34I want you off the cover.
00:10:35You never get back.
00:10:37We're talking about your life, Kate.
00:10:39This is my life.
00:10:41Without it, I don't have anything.
00:10:45I wish I could take your place.
00:10:51What did you say?
00:10:53I said it's too bad I can't fill in for you.
00:10:59No.
00:11:00Yes.
00:11:02No.
00:11:04Yes.
00:11:06Take my place.
00:11:07Hey, don't be crazy.
00:11:08I told you that I'd never...
00:11:09It would work, Kim.
00:11:11But you saved my career and my life.
00:11:15No.
00:11:18Please.
00:11:20It's the only way.
00:11:24You check into rehab?
00:11:27Yes.
00:11:27I can't do the things that you do.
00:11:33I don't have your grace or your style.
00:11:35I'll teach you.
00:11:37Kim, it would work.
00:11:38People always got us confused.
00:11:40But we're from different worlds now.
00:11:42I could never be as free as you are.
00:11:44I don't have your strength.
00:11:45You call this strength?
00:11:47It would never work.
00:11:48It would never work.
00:11:51You want to bet?
00:12:01Get rid of that ponytail.
00:12:02I don't have a hat.
00:12:04Oh, my God.
00:12:13So...
00:12:13What do you think?
00:12:15This is too crazy for words.
00:12:17But I'll try if you'll try
00:12:23That's better
00:12:29Good
00:12:31Come on back
00:12:34One, two, three, four
00:12:39One, two, three, four
00:12:41Kate, this'll never work
00:12:43I can't do this on a runway
00:12:44So you won't have to
00:12:46We only do the big runway shows when we're debuting the new lines
00:12:49The Chambertan line doesn't debut for six weeks
00:12:52You said I only had to be in the clinic for four
00:12:54Yeah, but I still have to act like a model
00:12:57You'll only have a few private showings scheduled at the salon
00:13:01Henri will be so happy I'm not bumping into the customers
00:13:04He won't notice your technique
00:13:05Henri?
00:13:06Henri Chambertan, of the House of Chambertan
00:13:16Actually, I should draw you a floor plan
00:13:18Paul is his doorman
00:13:19You have a nodding acquaintance with the sales girls
00:13:22And Marie is the chief fitter
00:13:23I helped her have a jam a little while ago
00:13:26So if you need her, you can count on her
00:13:28Now, who's he?
00:13:31Philip Claremont
00:13:32He's an American
00:13:33He's Henri's new partner
00:13:34Bought a controlling interest in the company last year
00:13:37He's not bad looking
00:13:38Yeah?
00:13:39Well, he doesn't have much use for me
00:13:41He would love to fire me, but he can't
00:13:43Why not?
00:13:45Because I'm a star
00:13:46The question is, am I?
00:13:50This will tell you about everyone and everything you'll need to know for the next month
00:13:54What about the man that you opened the club for?
00:13:56Jacques Arnault?
00:13:57He's gone to Hong Kong for a month, so you don't have to worry about him
00:14:00Is he someone special?
00:14:02No
00:14:02He owns some nightclubs, he sort of designs a scene
00:14:05Just forget about him
00:14:07It's almost three
00:14:11Well, let's get ready and get out of here
00:14:16Before I change my mind

00:14:29They're among the best in the world, and they are very discreet
00:14:32I know this is hard, Kate
00:14:41But you're doing the right thing
00:14:43Maybe you should just phone and tell them you don't know where I am
00:14:47I'll figure out something later
00:14:49No, it'll work out, just leave it to me
00:14:52And concentrate on getting better
00:14:55Miss Jameson?
00:15:00I'll take you up and register you now
00:15:02The doctor will be along later
00:15:04And don't worry
00:15:07We're here to help you through this
00:15:09Not judge what brought you to us
00:15:12I'll call you as soon as I can
00:15:15I'm sorry, there are no calls or visits allowed for the first three weeks
00:15:18It's best for all concerned
00:15:20I love you, Kate

00:20:08Yes, thank you.
00:20:12I thought that you had business in Hong Kong.
00:20:23Yes, I made my business arrangements more quickly than I expected.
00:20:29The new club owner said you were wonderful.
00:20:33I'm glad.
00:20:40Perhaps it's time to discuss another type of performance.
00:20:46I told you when I came back from Hong Kong, I told you when I came back from Hong Kong, I wanted to discuss an important matter.
00:20:58Don't tell me you've forgotten, Cherie.
00:21:06Actually, I'm a little tired.
00:21:12Would you mind if we discussed it later?
00:21:14Fair enough.
00:21:16Fair enough.
00:21:16But we can't leave it too long, can we?
00:21:22Let's have dinner at Tour d'Augent this week.

00:23:40You have a nodding acquaintance with the salesgirls.
00:23:43Marie is the fitter.
00:23:45Miss Confidence, relax.
00:23:47Oh, I'm so sorry.
00:23:54Oh, I'm so sorry.
00:23:56Sorry.
00:23:57I see you decided to come back to us.
00:24:02Yeah, I just went away for a few days.
00:24:06Without letting anyone here know where you were going.
00:24:09Won't happen again.
00:24:10You may still think you're a star, but some of us are having our doubts.
00:24:16I didn't realize that visiting my sister was any of your business.
00:24:21Anything that takes you out of Paris is my business.
00:24:23Including my private affairs.
00:24:25When you go out of town to open a new club for Arnault, I can't help thinking you have something
00:24:28to hide.
00:24:29And I can't help thinking that you're a...
00:24:31Dominique?
00:24:32This can't be you.
00:24:34Look at her, Philip.
00:24:35She has put on at least five pounds.
00:24:38I think she looks almost normal.
00:24:40My customers don't like normal women.
00:24:42We will have to give the finale to Jacqueline.
00:24:44She will never get into the gown.
00:24:45She may have had too much home cooking, but she is not deaf.
00:24:50You can talk to me.
00:24:52And the gown will look better with more of me in it.
00:24:59What do you think, Philip?
00:25:05I think if the gown fits, we should let her wear it.
00:25:08Well, thank you.
00:25:10If you'll excuse me, Marie's waiting.
00:25:23Carmen, you are in the solids.
00:25:26Jacqueline, you are in the polka dots.
00:25:29Polka dots make me look like a child.
00:25:32You want me to tell Henri you think his collection is childish?
00:25:35Morning.
00:25:36Your rail is there, Dominique.
00:25:41Sorry I'm late.
00:25:44How was your mysterious weekend?
00:25:49Uh, uneventful.
00:25:52Jacqueline was hoping you'd fall in love and never come back.
00:25:56Oh, I'm sure Dominique would never let her heart interfere with her career.
00:26:00In fact, I heard she had it removed.
00:26:03So it couldn't.
00:26:08Your sister must be an excellent cook.
00:26:12My sister?
00:26:13The one you want to visit?
00:26:15Why don't you put this off?
00:26:18It's why they're in the heaps.
00:26:23All right, everybody.
00:26:25Everybody else is free to leave for the day.
00:26:43Who are you?
00:26:44I know Dominique's body.
00:26:47And this is not it.
00:26:51Are you a twin?
00:26:54Yes.
00:26:55Where the hell did she send you?
00:26:57Where is she?
00:27:02She's in a rehab center.
00:27:04Oh.
00:27:05Well.
00:27:07She finally admitted she has a problem.
00:27:11You are a model.
00:27:12I'm an art history student.
00:27:16You are as crazy as she is.
00:27:18You know you'll never get away with this.
00:27:20She needs to get well.
00:27:22I'm only going to cover for her for a month.
00:27:24A month?
00:27:25Oh, no.
00:27:27The new line debuts next Saturday.
00:27:29Saturday?
00:27:30Yes.
00:27:31She told me that it doesn't...
00:27:32No, no, no, no.
00:27:33Philip brought the date forward to break the competition.
00:27:35This is our most important runway show in years.
00:27:38I can't fake a big fashion show.
00:27:40No, of course you can't.
00:27:41We're just going to have to go to Philip and tell him the truth.
00:27:44No, no, no.
00:27:45No, no.
00:27:46Saturday is almost a week away.
00:27:47We could...
00:27:48I could take lessons.
00:27:49You could teach me...
00:27:50No, I couldn't.
00:27:51Philip would find out immediately.
00:27:52And if you were found out on the runway, we'd all be finished.
00:27:57This is insane.
00:27:59Dominique told me that she helped you out of trouble once.
00:28:02So?
00:28:03So?
00:28:04So...
00:28:05Maybe it's your turn to help her act.
00:28:07Don't!
00:28:09Please, Marie.
00:28:10She loses her career.
00:28:11She'll never get sober.
00:28:15That's true.
00:28:19Oh.
00:28:20All right.
00:28:21All right.
00:28:22I guess I owe her that much.
00:28:25You just save your thanks until we know that this works.
00:28:28Okay.
00:28:31And lose those few pounds.
00:28:32Ooh.
00:28:53Ooh!
00:28:54Ooh!
00:28:56Ooh!
00:29:27I trust you know where these go?
00:30:57You know, you and your sister have more in common than you think.
00:31:03Yeah?
00:31:03Mm-hmm.
00:31:05Come and sit down for a while.
00:31:07No, I've got to go for a run.
00:31:09Oh, there's no need to push yourself so hard.
00:31:11Besides, Philippe said he likes you with your new curves.
00:31:14I don't know how Kate does this.
00:31:17Who's Kate?
00:31:19Oh, that's my sister's real name.
00:31:21You know, I always thought that she lived this soft life.
00:31:23A lot of parties, a lot of boyfriends.
00:31:25Oh, she has a few.
00:31:26Jacques Arnaud?
00:31:27Never struck me as her type.
00:31:30Well, she came home to do him a favor.
00:31:32But he seems to expect something more.
00:31:33Will you be careful?
00:31:36You may be a charmer.
00:31:37There's all the charm of a cobra.
00:31:39I can't thank you enough for all you've done for us.
00:31:49Oh.
00:31:51Your sister has a lot of faults.
00:31:53But she helped me when I desperately needed money.
00:31:57It was very selfless of her.
00:31:59That seems to run in your family.
00:32:00Yeah, Kate sure can mess things up.
00:32:05But she has spirit.
00:32:08Now, that is the attitude you need for the runway.
00:32:11That's spirit.
00:32:12A body is just a body.
00:32:14The very best mortals, they do it all up here.
00:32:19Up here?
00:32:21Mm-hmm.
00:32:22It's the ultimate strut, your stuff.
00:32:24Yes?
00:32:25Yes.
00:32:26You have to believe that you are the most beautiful woman in the world.
00:32:30If you believe it, they will.
00:33:23Cheers.
00:33:25You will be perfect.
00:33:55Don't stumble tonight, Dominique.
00:34:11Oh, God.
00:34:33Look back up.
00:34:40I feel good.
00:34:43Oh, God.
00:34:45Oh, God.
00:34:49Oh, oh, oh.
00:35:19Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
00:35:49Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
00:35:51Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
00:35:53We have set up the line.
00:35:55I hope so, aren't we?
00:35:57We're both at six.
00:35:59Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
00:36:01Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
00:36:03Oh, oh.
00:36:05Just a couple questions, please.
00:36:35Just a couple questions, please.
00:37:05Just a couple questions, please.
00:37:35Just a couple questions, please.
00:38:05Just a couple questions, please.
00:38:35Just a couple questions, please.
00:38:37You were inspired.
00:39:05Actually, I was scared, Steph.
00:39:09And how are you now?
00:39:12Exhausted.
00:39:13Oh, my dear, you were superb.
00:39:18Everybody wants to meet you.
00:39:20Everybody.
00:39:22Oh, well done, my child.
00:39:25Nice work.
00:39:25Come get up.
00:39:55Let me take you home.
00:40:03I don't, Henri said...
00:40:04I don't care what Henri said.
00:40:05I'm taking you home before you fall down, okay?
00:40:07Excuse us.
00:40:18You don't know how much I appreciate this.
00:40:21It's going to go long for you.
00:40:25Well, good.
00:40:33Are you capable of undressing on your own?
00:40:36Yes, I'm quite capable of undressing on my own.
00:40:40You're wearing Henri's merchandise.
00:40:43Oh, sorry.
00:40:45I should draw me back in the back.
00:40:48Oh, thank you for getting me out of there,
00:40:50because I had school.
00:40:52Fading fast.
00:40:55I thought the show went quite well.
00:41:18I was concerned what effect a drunken model would make on the customers.
00:41:28Hey, I am not drunk.
00:41:30I'm exhausted.
00:41:31I worked my behind out for this show.
00:41:33Then get some sleep.
00:41:34You have a photo shoot first thing tomorrow.
00:41:36Yes.
00:41:54Yes! Perfection!
00:42:02Enough. Thank you, my dear. That's all for today.
00:42:09Dominique, we do the covers now, but first we change the lighting, so take a break.
00:42:24Did you like it?
00:42:43Yeah, it shows less linear emphasis in his early work, and his use of light and color is much more confident.
00:42:51You certainly know what you're talking about.
00:42:56Forgive me for assuming you'd had too much to drink last night.
00:43:01It's not like I haven't given people that impression.
00:43:06Did you like this collection?
00:43:08Yes, I'm reading a book on it. I get my thoughts down, and I compare them with the books at home.
00:43:16Is Venetian Renaissance art your specialty, or do you have broader tastes?
00:43:21Such as?
00:43:23Favorite work?
00:43:25Actually, it's something that I've never seen.
00:43:28What is it?
00:43:30It's a bronze in the private collection of the Marquis de Bellevaux.
00:43:33Really?
00:43:37Dominique, nice to see you.
00:43:39Jacques?
00:43:40Congratulations on last evening. Your string of triumphs continues.
00:43:47Monsieur Clermont, it seems our friend has assured that Chambertin will survive one more season.
00:43:56The house of Chambertin is as solid as ever, Monsieur Arnault.
00:44:01Taste is a fickle commodity. No one knows that better than I.
00:44:06Or I.
00:44:09I believe the museum is closed to the public for the day.
00:44:16Yes, so I understand. I, however, came to see Dominique.
00:44:26Excuse me.
00:44:36I made a reservation for this evening. Eight o'clock, all right?
00:44:43Dominique?
00:44:44Eight. Ah, sure. Um, if you'll excuse me, Jacques, I have to get back to work.
00:44:50Don't be late. Your career may depend on it.
00:45:06Has she changed since she came back? Or is it just me?
00:45:13No. She's not the same woman. Not at all.
00:45:36Hi.
00:45:52Hi.
00:45:56In the 16th century, the Marquis de Bellevaux came to my family to borrow money to buy works of art.
00:46:01It came to your family? I, I thought that you were American.
00:46:04Well, yeah. I mean, for the last couple of hundred years, sure.
00:46:07But, uh, before the revolution, with Claremont's accounts, dukes, whatever you want.
00:46:11I had no idea that I was talking to royalty.
00:46:15Well, hardly. But you did say they had a sculpture you wanted to see.
00:46:24I've never seen so many beautiful sculptures.
00:46:27Look at this place.
00:46:34And no one here to enjoy it.
00:46:36Makes it a privilege to show it to somebody who will.
00:46:40I come here a lot by myself.
00:46:42Yeah, right.
00:46:43That's true. I do.
00:46:48For a thousand years before the revolution, we'd Claremont's were patrons of the arts.
00:46:53Something I'd always wanted to get back to.
00:46:55Oh, is that why you invested in the fashion business?
00:46:57Well, yeah, I'd always wanted to return to Paris and fashion in its way as an art form.
00:47:02Yeah.
00:47:03Well, so I'd been led to believe the house of Chambertin could be profitable.
00:47:06Why is it not?
00:47:08Well, Henri is a great artist, but, uh, his business sense is nonexistent.
00:47:13We needed a very good season.
00:47:16Needed?
00:47:17We're about to launch the new season now.
00:47:24This morning, somebody broke into Henri's office while we were doing your cover shots.
00:47:29Some sketches and their muslin patterns were stolen.
00:47:33Why would anyone steal his work?
00:47:36Well, it happens from time to time in this business.
00:47:38Mess market is in the Far East using those patterns.
00:47:41Before we can even break this line, Henri's creations could be in hundreds of stores.
00:47:46Did you call the police?
00:47:49Oh, publicity like this could ruin us.
00:47:52Do you have any suspects?
00:47:55Has to be somebody inside the firm.
00:47:58Also, I think they're working for Jacques Arnault.
00:48:01Arnault?
00:48:03Because of his clubs, there's access to all the right people, not all the wrong ones.
00:48:08You don't think that I had anything to do with it?
00:48:11Not unless you can be in two places at once.
00:48:14Nope.
00:48:18Oh.
00:48:20That is more beautiful than I expected.
00:48:26You know, I feel like I'm just getting to know who you are.
00:48:29Yeah.
00:48:31Know what you mean.
00:48:35Want to go out for dinner?
00:48:38I can't.
00:48:39I already have plans.
00:48:40Can't cancel them, though.
00:48:42No.
00:48:44I want to.
00:48:46Maybe I can persuade you.
00:48:48Um...
00:48:51Could you take me home?
00:48:53Why?
00:48:56Is there someone I have to see?
00:48:59Sure.
00:49:00I can't?
00:49:01I don't know.
00:49:03I don't know what you're making.
00:49:04I can.
00:49:05But we're all alone.
00:49:06I ain't feeling my son.
00:49:07I can't.
00:49:10Are you?
00:49:12I can't.
00:49:13I can't.
00:49:15I can't.
00:49:17Are you?
00:49:19Are you okay?
00:49:22Are you okay?
00:49:24Are you okay?
00:49:26No.
00:49:27Oh, no.
00:49:46Mineral water, please. Thank you.
00:49:49Watching my weight.
00:49:51You look enchanting already,
00:49:52and no life is worth living without champagne.
00:49:55I don't know.
00:50:00I should have known a paparazzi would be here.
00:50:03Dominique is on top once again.
00:50:09It would be a shame if this fame were fleeting.
00:50:19Did you get the sketches?
00:50:21The sketches?
00:50:23I'm disappointed.
00:50:24I heard there was a problem at Chambertan today.
00:50:26I was hoping that you'd finally come through for me.
00:50:30This is what you wanted to discuss.
00:50:32Don't play innocent.
00:50:34You weren't that drunk when I first told you about this.
00:50:36And we both agreed that friends should do each other favors, didn't we?
00:50:42Yeah, but it's too risky.
00:50:47Philip already suspects me because of our friendship.
00:50:49He does, does he?
00:50:50Maybe we should tell him the whole story.
00:50:54My dearest Dominique,
00:50:56what would he think
00:50:57if he knew that your wild evenings at my club
00:51:01could destroy the reputation of the house of Chambertan
00:51:04all by themselves?
00:51:06I doubt that he would listen to what you have to say.
00:51:12True.
00:51:13True.
00:51:13But he will believe his own eyes.
00:51:24Some may call that pornography.
00:51:26I prefer to think of it as art.
00:51:30Quite a night, wasn't it?
00:51:31Imagine how these would look
00:51:34in one of those magazines
00:51:37or on Philip's desk.
00:51:41They're fakes.
00:51:42My dear,
00:51:44we both know that you've lost entire days to the bottle.
00:51:47And I was always there, sweetheart,
00:51:50scraping you up off the floor
00:51:51when you couldn't move.
00:51:55I don't remember.
00:51:58Perhaps you were too drunk
00:52:00to remember what you were doing.
00:52:01Perhaps not.
00:52:03Get me the sketches
00:52:05and muslin, shall we?
00:52:07When I get them,
00:52:09you get these.
00:52:12And I am prepared to bring you down
00:52:14along with the house of Chambertan.
00:52:30Fair Oaks Clinic.
00:52:38Yes, Kate Jameson, please.
00:52:40It's an emergency.
00:52:41I'm sorry.
00:52:42There's no contact allowed
00:52:43for the first three weeks.
00:52:45But if you'd like to leave a message...
00:52:47No, no, no, no.
00:52:47That's too complicated.
00:52:49Please just get her to call her sister
00:52:51as soon as she can.
00:52:54Where's Marie?
00:53:01Being questioned by Henri.
00:53:03His designs have been stolen.
00:53:05Speaking of which,
00:53:07have you seen Jacques Garneau, maybe?
00:53:08Don't bathe me, Jacqueline.
00:53:10I'm not in the movie.
00:53:11From the screaming,
00:53:12it sounds like Marie is about to confess
00:53:14whether she did it or not.
00:53:16Good.
00:53:17Maybe we'll get a cheap fitter
00:53:19who won't put me in...
00:53:20how can you treat her like this?
00:53:27All right, Marie.
00:53:28We'll speak to you later.
00:53:34That woman has given her life
00:53:36to the house of Chambertan.
00:53:37Yes, she also just bought herself
00:53:39a new apartment.
00:53:40So?
00:53:41Her husband died a year ago.
00:53:43He was a civil servant
00:53:44who never made enough money
00:53:45in his lifetime to buy a car,
00:53:47let alone an apartment.
00:53:49And that's enough to assume
00:53:50she'd destroy the only company
00:53:51she's ever worked for?
00:53:53But she just found an apartment
00:53:55and somebody else paid for it.
00:53:57I paid for it.
00:54:01You?
00:54:02Yes.
00:54:04But what didn't she say?
00:54:05Why should she?
00:54:08Why should I?
00:54:11How was your dinner?
00:54:13I heard you and Arnaud
00:54:15were together all night.
00:54:16I have done nothing
00:54:21to hurt the house of Chambertan.
00:54:30That woman.
00:54:31One day you want to fire her.
00:54:33The next,
00:54:34she's every passion
00:54:35you want to associate
00:54:36with your designs.
00:54:39Henri,
00:54:40I think we should risk the publicity
00:54:42and go to the police.
00:54:44We'll explain these
00:54:44become the patterns
00:54:45to your creations
00:54:46kind of a blueprint.
00:54:48This is not a blueprint.
00:54:50This is a vision.
00:54:51A one-of-a-kind stroke
00:54:53of genius.
00:54:54Irreplaceable.
00:54:55We have to replace them.
00:54:56We have no choice.
00:54:58We can't stay in business
00:55:00unless we market
00:55:00a full line of designs
00:55:02this season.
00:55:03Oh, yes.
00:55:03Have another vision.
00:55:05It's easy for you to say.
00:55:07Henri.
00:55:07No, no, no.
00:55:08No, no, no.
00:55:10No, it's the fate
00:55:11of the artist.
00:55:12I will go seek my muse.
00:55:14You just pray
00:55:15that I find her.
00:55:25Marie.
00:55:26Why didn't you tell them
00:55:27that Dominique gave you the money?
00:55:28I thought it would make
00:55:29them suspect her.
00:55:31You probably would
00:55:32have been right.
00:55:32They know that I didn't
00:55:34steal the designs.
00:55:36But I don't know
00:55:37how deeply Dominique
00:55:38was involved.
00:55:40Meaning?
00:55:41Arnaud has photos of her.
00:55:43The kind of photos
00:55:44that make you
00:55:44a little more than notorious.
00:55:46No.
00:55:47She would have agreed
00:55:48to do anything
00:55:48to keep them from being seen.
00:55:50And the way he saw it,
00:55:51it was obvious
00:55:52he thought she'd done it for her.
00:55:53I've always thought
00:55:54that man was dangerous.
00:55:55He's a street thug
00:55:57with money.
00:55:58You know, there's a rumor
00:55:59there is bad blood
00:56:01between him and Felipe.
00:56:02Well, whatever's going on,
00:56:04I just lied to Philip
00:56:06to cover for Kate.
00:56:07Oh.
00:56:09You're very attracted
00:56:11to him, aren't you?
00:56:12Me?
00:56:13No.
00:56:14Of course not.
00:56:15Oh, good.
00:56:16That's one less thing
00:56:17to worry about.
00:56:19Okay, there is
00:56:21a little attraction.
00:56:23But it's not me
00:56:23that he sees.
00:56:24It's Dominique.
00:56:26Oh.
00:56:26I knew we shouldn't have
00:56:29played that game again.
00:56:30Game?
00:56:33When I was 17,
00:56:35I met this boy,
00:56:36Peter Robinson.
00:56:37He was the first boy
00:56:38I ever had a crush on.
00:56:40He asked me out,
00:56:41but I had a term paper
00:56:42to deliver,
00:56:43so Kate took my place.
00:56:46And what happened?
00:56:47She was her usual
00:56:49boisterous self,
00:56:50and he fell in love
00:56:51with her.
00:56:52Oh, that girl.
00:56:53After that,
00:56:54we never played
00:56:55the game again.
00:56:56Uh, this is, uh,
00:56:57an exclusive, uh, regional.
00:56:59I can't go on a catwalk
00:57:00like this.
00:57:01There is no catwalk.
00:57:03You walk among the guests.
00:57:09Oh, Jacqueline.
00:57:12You want to wear this?
00:57:14Trying to impress Philip
00:57:15with your restraint?
00:57:23Oh, look.
00:57:34Philip brought a lady with him.
00:57:40Lovely, isn't she?
00:57:48Turn around, please.
00:57:49What do you think, Mimi?
00:57:57It's not really
00:57:58my style, Philip.
00:57:59Thank you, Dominique.
00:58:05Dominique,
00:58:06I want you to meet Mimi.
00:58:08Um, actually,
00:58:09I'm on the way out.
00:58:10I've used to meet Dominique.
00:58:14I can never wear clothes
00:58:15the way you do.
00:58:17Not even, uh,
00:58:18when there's just one of me.
00:58:20Dominique,
00:58:21my sister,
00:58:22Mimi Dupre.
00:58:23Your sister?
00:58:25Hi there.
00:58:26It's nice to meet you.
00:58:28Hi.
00:58:28You look like
00:58:29a Raphael Madonna.
00:58:30When are you due?
00:58:31Oh, two weeks,
00:58:32but might just as well
00:58:33be two months.
00:58:35Philip tells me
00:58:36you're quite the art expert.
00:58:38Oh, hardly, hardly.
00:58:40Well, I'm sure
00:58:40he's also told you
00:58:41that her family's had
00:58:41a long, uh,
00:58:42relationship with the arts.
00:58:44Yes, yes.
00:58:45Mimi spends much of her time
00:58:46raising money
00:58:47to restore damaged paintings.
00:58:49Ah, ah.
00:58:50I thought if I could get you
00:58:51to host one of our fundraisers,
00:58:53it might draw some attention.
00:58:55Oh, uh,
00:58:57hmm.
00:58:58Well, you know where
00:58:58Dominique goes,
00:58:59the press follows.
00:59:00It really would help.
00:59:02Um.
00:59:03Will you join us
00:59:04for dinner tomorrow night?
00:59:06My husband, Stefan,
00:59:06and I are staying with Philip
00:59:07in the city
00:59:08until the baby's born.
00:59:08Please, say yes.
00:59:13Yes.
00:59:13Yes.
00:59:14Okay.
00:59:15I would be glad to help.
00:59:16Um,
00:59:18tomorrow evening.
00:59:18I will be glad to be here.
01:00:02What do you want now, Jacques?
01:00:06What I've always wanted, Cherie.
01:00:08I have customers who are getting anxious.
01:00:10Now, where are those sketches?
01:00:12I told you I don't have them.
01:00:19Don't lie to me.
01:00:24Now, I will give you one more day.
01:00:28Well, your career might not be the only thing I bring to an end.
01:00:35Okay.
01:00:55Wow, this is a stunning building.
01:01:09It's one of the last private houses in Paris.
01:01:11So how long have you lived here?
01:01:13Well, I lived here as a child.
01:01:15But my father was unhappy here, so we had to leave.
01:01:20It's hard to imagine not being happy here.
01:01:42Hi.
01:01:43Hi.
01:01:44Thank you for coming.
01:01:49I hope you feel at home.
01:01:50Thank you for having me.
01:01:52Of course.
01:01:52She'll be dazzled by the meal after the end.
01:01:55This is my husband, Stefan.
01:01:56He likes to help in the kitchen.
01:01:58I had to pay my cook extra for the primalids.
01:02:00It's a pleasure to meet you.
01:02:02Nice to meet you.
01:02:04Your home is magnificent.
01:02:06The last Count de Clermont had it built in 1770.
01:02:09Our father bought it and had it restored.
01:02:11Ah, Philip told me that it was only a drafty old house.
01:02:15In France, understatement is everything.
01:02:19Come on, let me show you around.
01:02:30If I'd said come to our home with everything our terribly important family has ever bought,
01:02:35you'd have turned me down for sure.
01:02:37Mimi, your humility is showing.
01:02:39It comes from inbreeding and living too far from Versailles.
01:02:43Who is she?
01:02:45Our grandmother.
01:02:47I can see the resemblance.
01:02:49Do you have a painting of your mother?
01:02:53I do in my home, but, uh...
01:02:55Stefan, let's say we go get a nice bottle of wine, huh?
01:02:58I lost a butler, too.
01:03:00I'd rather do it myself.
01:03:01Come on.
01:03:01Come on.
01:03:08Oh.
01:03:15Oh, oh, oh.
01:03:16You all right?
01:03:17Uh-huh.
01:03:18Yes.
01:03:19Sorry.
01:03:20The baby's just restless.
01:03:22Mm.
01:03:25Don't let Stefano.
01:03:26He fusses.
01:03:28Okay.
01:03:28And Philip is even worse.
01:03:31Yeah, you two seem to be very close.
01:03:34Yeah.
01:03:35We had to learn to stick together.
01:03:37Yeah.
01:03:37Our father brought the family to France when we were kids.
01:03:44He wanted to move back permanently.
01:03:45Then mother left him for another man.
01:03:51I'm sorry.
01:03:55Dad immediately took us back to the States.
01:03:59It was an awful time.
01:04:04Philip has never really trusted a woman since.
01:04:08Surely there must have been someone.
01:04:12Yeah, he's had girlfriends.
01:04:13But no one he's ever given his heart to.
01:04:24All right, you two.
01:04:25The cook says my first course is ready to serve.
01:04:28Great.
01:04:30Now we use the pregnant lady as a guinea pig, huh?
01:04:32Mm-hmm.
01:04:33Clement used to be one of the most famous and respected titles in all of France.
01:04:47We still didn't keep our ancestors from losing their heads during the revolution.
01:04:51When Mimi wanted to marry me, her family was astounded.
01:04:54I'm just a mutt.
01:04:56But a very rich one.
01:04:57Would you like some more coffee, Dominique?
01:04:59Oh, no, thank you.
01:05:01Everything was delicious.
01:05:03I'll compliment the chef.
01:05:07Looks like to be small.
01:05:08I guess what I'm asking you to do is show me my own etchings.
01:05:17Well, I doubt that I can teach you anything about your own art.
01:05:20Well, you might be surprised.
01:05:28These brushstrokes evolved into a figure.
01:05:33So you're saying the artist was just feeling the composition as he went along?
01:05:38Yes.
01:05:38The best don't really paint a picture.
01:05:40They make you feel it.
01:05:42When you sense that rush of emotion, you know that you're in the presence of great art.
01:05:45Yes, you do.
01:05:50What a great place to grow up in.
01:05:54Oh, I think the beauty was lost on me then.
01:05:57My childhood is not something I remember fondly.
01:06:02Mostly I remember being alone.
01:06:09They're very beautiful.
01:06:10Stefan says it's time to put the pregnant lady to bed.
01:06:27Thank you so much for...
01:06:28Oh, oh, oh, oh.
01:06:29Mimi.
01:06:31Mimi.
01:06:31Oh, my God.
01:06:32Get her under a chair.
01:06:33No, no, no, no.
01:06:34Leave her here.
01:06:34Get her a pillow.
01:06:35Get her a pillow under her head.
01:06:36Is she okay?
01:06:38Oh, God.
01:06:39Okay, call the doctor for a second.
01:06:41I'll get to Connie.
01:06:42No, call the doctor now.
01:06:43He's coming.
01:06:46Cody.
01:06:46The baby's coming.
01:06:49What?
01:06:50Just relax.
01:06:51Just relax.
01:06:54Stefan!
01:06:55Stefan!
01:06:55They are both going to be okay.
01:07:14Can we see her?
01:07:16We three are all going to the hospital for the night.
01:07:19We'll be here if you need anything.
01:07:20The baby would never have made it without you.
01:07:32It was quite the night.
01:07:33You're amazing.
01:07:34I've never met anybody quite like you.
01:07:36You're having me.
01:07:57Oh, my God.
01:07:58Mon Dieu, mon Dieu, laissez-le-moi encore un peu, mon Dieu, mon Dieu, mon Dieu.
01:08:28Sous-titrage Société Radio-Canada
01:08:58Philippe, I want you to care about me for who I am.
01:09:05I want that, too. I want to know all about you. I want to know all about your life. I want to know all about your family.
01:09:11Why did you choose modeling when art is obviously the thing closest to you?
01:09:16And why did it take me so long to find out how incredible you are?
01:09:22I know I am.
01:09:23Mimi. She told you about our mother. She was very beautiful, too. But it was her sole reason for being.
01:09:41And the day she left, she put her arms around me and said,
01:09:47I love you more than anything in the world.
01:09:52And then she walked out and never came back.
01:09:55You're the first person I've ever told that to.
01:10:11Philippe, there's something I have to tell you.
01:10:14Not bad.
01:10:24Okay.
01:10:27You give up easily?
01:10:30Sure.
01:10:37Okay.
01:10:41Okay.
01:10:42Okay.
01:10:42Okay.
01:10:42Okay.
01:10:42Okay.
01:10:42Okay.
01:10:42Okay.
01:10:42Okay.
01:10:42Okay.
01:10:42Okay.
01:10:42Okay.
01:10:44Okay.
01:10:45Okay.
01:10:46Okay.
01:10:47Okay.
01:10:48Okay.
01:10:49Okay.
01:10:50Okay.
01:10:51Okay.
01:10:52Okay.
01:10:53Okay.
01:10:54Mademoiselle Dominique.
01:10:55Monsieur Arnault asked me to get this to you right away.
01:10:59What is it?
01:11:00What is it?
01:11:01What is it?
01:11:02What is it?
01:11:03What is it?
01:11:04What is it?
01:11:05What is it?
01:11:06What is it?
01:11:07What is it?
01:11:08Give it to me.
01:11:09You can open it.
01:11:10You can open it.
01:11:11No.
01:11:12What is it?
01:11:13Let's just go upstairs, okay?
01:11:14Is it something I shouldn't see?
01:11:16No.
01:11:20What is it?
01:11:21Let's just go upstairs, okay?
01:11:25There's something I shouldn't see.
01:11:37Philip.
01:11:46Where's Chuck?
01:12:16Up here, shall we?
01:12:18Can I get you a drink, or are you still dieting?
01:12:22What did you hope to accomplish by sending me those photos?
01:12:25Just a reminder.
01:12:26I gave you fair warning.
01:12:28The next one will go to the press.
01:12:31Well, your little reminder was almost seen by Philip.
01:12:37I would have given anything to have seen that little Aristocat's face if that had happened.
01:12:41Why is that?
01:12:42I hate all his kind, making people fawn over them and do their bidding just because they have money.
01:12:49Well, I hope that there's more to this than that.
01:12:53My family worked their fingers to the bone for the Claremont.
01:12:57And they tore us apart.
01:12:59And?
01:13:01I don't need you to believe anything.
01:13:03I'll give you until tomorrow night to deliver those sketches.
01:13:06After that, I can't be held responsible for the consequences.
01:13:09Your time has run out, my sweet.
01:13:20Well, you can do whatever you want with the photographs because I'm going to the police.
01:13:23Don't forget to tell them you took the sketches and I have a witness.
01:13:28If you want to tell them about her.
01:13:31What a witness!
01:13:32The newspapers will have a field day, those lurid photographs.
01:13:37Top model brought down by her biggest rival.
01:13:43You're juggling.
01:13:45This will give her everything she's always wanted.
01:13:47You're trapped.
01:13:48It's the flip side of the party, Dominique.
01:13:59Now go and get me what I ask for.
01:14:01If what you say is true, this is the end of the house of Chambartin.
01:14:18It's unbelievable all this history ruined by some sordid little story.
01:14:24Could Jacqueline have stolen her for her?
01:14:25She's a hungry one.
01:14:29I've never seen anyone want a magazine cover like she does, but no one would stoop that low.
01:14:35Was she a friend of Arnaud's?
01:14:37No, no.
01:14:38She never goes to the clubs.
01:14:39Her career is everything.
01:14:41So what's going on with her and Dominique?
01:14:44You would have to ask your sister.
01:14:47I can't.
01:14:48The clinic called.
01:14:50She checked herself out and they don't know where she went.
01:14:52Oh, that girl.
01:14:53Well, maybe she didn't know that these things were going to happen.
01:15:00And maybe I don't know my sister at all.
01:15:02And maybe you should go back to your own life.
01:15:06These are not your problems.
01:15:08I can't.
01:15:09I mean, finding out the truth is the only thing that's going to save her from Arnaud.
01:15:14And maybe save you and Phoebe.
01:15:18There's not much chance of that.
01:15:19I don't know.
01:15:23Henri, what are you thinking of?
01:15:26The new collection.
01:15:28No, no.
01:15:28I mean, are you going somewhere?
01:15:29Why are the drawings out?
01:15:31Well, because I've been working on the new collection.
01:15:33They are beautiful, yes?
01:15:35Yes, they are.
01:15:36I just hope we're the ones who get to sell them.
01:15:37You know, you're practically inviting someone to come in and steal these.
01:15:40Oh, don't be ridiculous, Miriam.
01:15:43A true artist cannot function in an atmosphere of paranoia.
01:15:48Besides, I'm in a rush.
01:15:50I have tickets for the opera.
01:15:53And you know, I hate to miss the overture.
01:15:56So, um, I go.
01:15:59Henri!
01:16:00Uh, wait here, please.
01:16:20Hello there.
01:16:43I'm looking for Jacqueline LeClaire.
01:16:47Mama!
01:16:47Mama!
01:16:50What are you doing here?
01:16:55We need to talk.
01:16:57Wait for me in the front room.
01:17:03Mommy needs to talk to this lady.
01:17:08Come on.
01:17:10Let's go to your room, okay?
01:17:20Your son's a beautiful little boy.
01:17:26What do you want?
01:17:28You have something which belongs to Henri.
01:17:31What makes you think that?
01:17:33Jacques told me.
01:17:35Why would you do something like this?
01:17:38Don't pretend you don't know.
01:17:39I don't know.
01:17:40You had told him about my past.
01:17:43He's blackmailed me ever since.
01:17:46I never told him anything.
01:17:55Does he have something like that on you?
01:17:56No.
01:17:56He's playing us off of each other.
01:18:10Yes.
01:18:11He finds your weakness and exploits it.
01:18:13With you, it was your drinking.
01:18:15With me, it was what I became to care for my son.
01:18:18There were so many men offering money.
01:18:21And my son needed food.
01:18:23I was all alone.
01:18:24I was desperate.
01:18:35I thought if I took the drawings and told Jacques you had them...
01:18:39That it would finish my career.
01:18:41I thought maybe that would be the end of it.
01:18:44He'd have beaten Philip.
01:18:45That's what he really wants.
01:18:46Why?
01:18:48His parents worked for the Claremonts
01:18:50until Philip's mother ran off with Jacques' father.
01:18:53Without his father, Jacques' family sank into poverty.
01:18:57He's always blamed the Claremonts for what happened.
01:19:00You have to return these.
01:19:02I can't.
01:19:03It was hard enough getting them out.
01:19:05No, it's impossible.
01:19:06Yes, you can.
01:19:06You just walk in there,
01:19:08you put them back,
01:19:08and you walk back out again.
01:19:10I can't fight him.
01:19:17Wait.
01:19:19This won't stop him.
01:19:20I'll handle Jacques.
01:19:23Hi, Paul.
01:19:40I'm just locking up this don't need.
01:19:42Um, I forgot my earrings.
01:19:45Just a second.
01:19:46You're all right.
01:19:47You're all right.
01:20:14I'm returning the sketches.
01:20:24Having taken the opportunity to copy them, no doubt.
01:20:27No.
01:20:28I'm returning the sketches for someone who took them and regretted taking them afterward.
01:20:36Who?
01:20:40I can't say.
01:20:41No, of course not.
01:20:44Tell me, how much is your friend Jacques paying you to do this?
01:20:47Philip, I didn't steal them.
01:20:49Stop lying to me.
01:20:51I'm not lying to you.
01:20:53When did you decide to use me in your little gang?
01:20:55Was it why we were waiting to see if Mimi and the baby would live?
01:20:59I didn't mean to hurt you.
01:21:11Hello, Dominique.
01:21:32This cafe has inspired artists for centuries.
01:21:37All the greats.
01:21:38It's fitting you should choose it for my latest trial.
01:21:41I've never really thought of you as an artist, Jacques.
01:21:44You are the clay in my hands, Dominique.
01:21:47Where are those designs?
01:21:49Show me my talents have not been wasted.
01:21:51Blackmail isn't an art.
01:21:53It's a crime.
01:21:54Such ugly words from such a beautiful woman.
01:21:58You disappoint me.
01:21:59Why?
01:22:00Because I'm not afraid of your photographs or your threats?
01:22:04Because I'm not afraid of a low-life pimp?
01:22:07Don't tempt me, Dominique.
01:22:12Give me those sketches or I will ruin your career.
01:22:15You see, I don't think it's the sketches that you really want.
01:22:19Because that's not interesting enough for you.
01:22:22Jacques.
01:22:26You want to use me, at least give me the satisfaction of knowing why.
01:22:30I want to see Philippe's face when all he has left are his title and his arrogance.
01:22:39I want to see him drowning in your betrayal.
01:22:42You are unbelievable.
01:22:46Now give me those sketches.
01:22:47My buyer is waiting.
01:22:49My photographs.
01:22:51Jacqueline's photographs with negatives.
01:22:53Now, I ask myself, why would you help her?
01:22:57She hates everything about you.
01:22:58Well, that's the deal.
01:23:01You don't have them.
01:23:07Now, it's not very nice being threatened, is it?
01:23:11You want to get Philippe?
01:23:13Then you play by my rules.
01:23:28Stay out of my life.
01:23:41Dominique!
01:23:42Dominique!
01:23:45Dominique!
01:23:47Dominique!
01:23:48You are finished!
01:23:50Do you hear me?
01:23:51You are finished!
01:23:56Don't tempt me, Dominique.
01:23:58Give me those sketches or I will ruin your career.
01:24:04Dominique, come in.
01:24:05Jacqueline has just told me everything.
01:24:10I couldn't let you take the blame.
01:24:12Thanks.
01:24:13You were both of you very foolish not to tell me what was going on.
01:24:17I always look after my girls.
01:24:20And if Arnaud had made any trouble, well, I think my contacts with the press are more powerful than his.
01:24:27Yes, I am owed a great number of favors.
01:24:30Well, I think that this will help.
01:24:34Jacques admitted everything.
01:24:36Dominique!
01:24:37Where are you going?
01:24:39You have to give Philippe the news.
01:24:41I think he'd rather hear that from you.
01:25:00Who's there?
01:25:01Hey, Kim.
01:25:04Oh, looking good.
01:25:07It suits you.
01:25:09What are you doing here?
01:25:10And why did you leave the clinic?
01:25:12I read about the new line in the paper, and I didn't want you to deal with Arnaud, so I came back to take over.
01:25:18Well, it's too late.
01:25:19He was here all along.
01:25:22It's okay.
01:25:24We'll talk about it later.
01:25:26Now, how are you doing with the program?
01:25:29Let's just say that I had some time to look at who I'd become.
01:25:36I'm sorry.
01:25:37Promise me you'll continue treatment.
01:25:42I've already looked into a clinic here, and I start next week.
01:25:45Anyone find us out?
01:25:50Only Marie, but she covered for us.
01:25:55Well, if there's one thing I've learned these past few weeks, is that I have to be honest about who I am.
01:26:01So, tomorrow, we'll go in, and I'll tell them the truth.
01:26:04No, I, uh, I'm going to call and thank Marie, but I'm taking the first flight out of here.
01:26:13She what?
01:26:14She's going home to America.
01:26:16I could not talk her out of it.
01:26:18What time is she leaving?
01:26:19I don't know, but she said she had time to say goodbye to Paris.
01:26:23I don't know, but I'm going to call her out of here, and I'm going to call her out of here, and I'm going to call her out of here.
01:26:44Oh, Dominique, you can't leave.
01:26:47Philip.
01:26:47You've got to give me a chance to apologize.
01:26:49Philip.
01:26:50I need you.
01:26:51Philip.
01:26:51Look, I know that night in my apartment meant something about you, but I know it's...
01:26:54Oh, Philip, you better stop right there.
01:26:56I am not the woman that you think I am.
01:27:08Hey, buddy, look where you're going.
01:27:10Damn, Frenchman.
01:27:21Dominique told me what you did.
01:27:31I was crazy enough to trust you.
01:27:33Yeah, you were.
01:27:40It's just like I told you, hon.
01:27:43Frenchman like us.
01:27:45I know.
01:27:50You know what?
01:27:51You're going to have to marry me so we can work on this every day.
01:27:55Don't you think you need to know the name of the girl before you marry her?
01:27:57What?
01:28:11I know.
01:28:11Oh.
01:28:12I know.
01:28:13Oh.
01:28:15Oh.
01:28:16Oh.
01:28:20Oh.
01:28:24Oh.
01:28:25Oh.
01:28:26Oh.
01:28:27Oh.
01:28:27Oh.
