Review Of Shonda Rhimes' 'Inventing Anna'
Transcript
00:00We have a big weekend coming up.
00:02People will obviously be tuning into the Super Bowl,
00:05even if it's just for the halftime show.
00:07But Roz and I have a prediction that we think everyone is going to be buzzing about
00:12that has nothing to do with football.
00:14It's a new Netflix series, Inventing Anna.
00:16This show is so bonkers.
00:18It's a series created by Shonda Rhimes,
00:20who, of course, is the mastermind behind Grey's Anatomy, Scandal,
00:25and, of course, over on Netflix, the big giant hit, Bridgerton.
00:28Now, if you have not seen the trailer,
00:30yet, for Inventing Anna, this is it.
00:31Take a look.
00:33I might have a story.
00:35Her name is Anna Delvey.
00:36For Anna Sorokin, no one's short.
00:38She's either a rich German heiress or she's flat broke.
00:41The charges are insane.
00:43Anna committed real white-collar felonies
00:45while posing as a socialite in an attempt to steal millions of dollars.
00:51Hi, Anna.
00:52I just had some questions.
00:54I have a question.
00:56What's you wearing?
00:57You look poor.
01:00The series is based on the article How Anna Delvey Tricked New York's Party People,
01:08written by Jessica Pressler.
01:10Now, it details how a fake German heiress named Anna Delvey
01:13caught New York City's elite out of thousands upon thousands upon thousands of dollars.
01:17The article's dedication of uncovering the truth was what caught Shonda's eye,
01:24and she decided to write this series from the perspective of a journalist who is very,
01:30very loosely based on the real-life Jessica.
01:33Yeah, Jessica, of course, is a producer on the show.
01:35Now, I got to sit down with the cast this week and spoke with star Julia Garner about why she thinks people will be obsessed with Anna.
01:43I think people find Anna intriguing for multiple reasons, whether you love it or you hate it.
01:51I think people have, people are intrigued always by things that they love and they hate, you know,
01:58always things that are interesting or things that are contradicting itself.
02:02But, yeah, so to me, I think that's why people gravitate towards it.
02:09But I also think people gravitate towards it because I really think the story is about identity
02:14and the people struggling with their identity and how people in this, especially in this day and age,
02:23are not having an okay time being themselves, but pretending like they're okay being themselves
02:29because that's what they, you know, put on social media in a way.
02:36It's interesting.
02:37This show reminds me of when, remember when season one of Stranger Things was released?
02:44Mm-hmm.
02:44And it didn't matter what you had going on that weekend.
02:47Nobody really knew anything about it.
02:49You sort of had heard a little bit.
02:51But when it dropped, whatever you had going on that weekend when they dropped Stranger Things,
02:56it ruined everything.
02:57Everybody canceled their entire weekend when that show first dropped.
03:02Inventing Anna is going to do the same thing this weekend.
03:04People are going to be obsessed with, first of all, her accent, right?
03:08That is going to, people are going to be doing their own version of the Anna accent.
03:12But this will be your obsession on the weekend.
03:15Please believe us when we say do not plan for anything other than,
03:20and I know it's the Super Bowl on the weekend,
03:21you are going to try to get through Inventing Anna before Sunday.
03:26And I'm telling you, it's doable even though they're long episodes.
03:29You know, it's funny that you mentioned the accent,
03:31because unlike House of Gucci and Lady Gaga's accent,
03:36the way people were talking about that,
03:37people were talking about this because of the reasoning behind why the accent is the way that it is.
03:41Yes.
03:42Because she's trying to capture who this character was,
03:44who this real person is, I should say, Anna Sorokin, a real person.
03:47Yeah.
03:48And the idea that her heritage is unclear.
03:53So the accent is also unclear.
03:57Now, I don't know how familiar anybody out there is with the story.
03:59When it came out, it was a bit of a sensation,
04:01which is why this article was, or sorry, after this article was written,
04:04which is why the series came about.
04:07But everybody involved in the series that I talked to,
04:10whether they had read about it when it happened,
04:13or if they read about it because they were involved in the series,
04:15just got hooked on the whole idea of it, of this person.
04:19And Anna herself, as played by Julia Garner,
04:22is like this crazily magnetic figure.
04:28Yeah, it's definitely going to be worth watching.
04:29And I don't think people are going to have a hard time getting through it.
04:32No.
04:32It's just going to be like, you have to.
04:33No.
04:33You're going to watch it and go.
04:34It's so...
04:35It's like, you know, drink the water and go to the next thing.
04:38It's so delicious because the episodes,
04:41like these aren't 30-minute episodes.
04:42Like some of the episodes are hour plus.
04:44Sure, yeah.
04:45Right, and it's a series, but I will say...
04:47For anybody that spent any amount of time this week
04:51watching the Tinder Swindler, okay,
04:54that is like the perfect opening act for Inventing Anna.
04:59Like, Inventing Anna is going to be the headliner this weekend.
05:02The Tinder Swindler was the opening act,
05:04and it is this perfectly smooth transition.
05:07And I'm telling you right now,
05:08it's going to be your whole weekend.
05:10Like, plan for it.
05:11It's also got that air of mystery to it, too.
05:13I'm telling you, man, Sean the land didn't know how to do it.
05:15I love it.
05:15Yeah.
05:17Good morning.
05:18I love it.
05:18I like the end of the week.
05:19It's going to be your whole weekend.
05:20It's just going to be the end of the weekend.
