A far-right Australian lawmaker sparked backlash on Monday Nov. 24 after appearing in Parliament wearing a burqa, a move other legislators denounced as racist, unsafe and disrespectful. Pauline Hanson, leader of the anti-immigration One Nation party, had been attempting to introduce a bill to ban full face coverings in Australia. After the Senate blocked her effort, she re-entered the chamber wearing a black burqa and took her seat. The stunt drew immediate condemnation from fellow senators.
