00:00You've called this your most personal film yet. Why is this project so personal to you?
00:05Oh, because of the music.
00:09And because probably it's the movie where I have felt so far that I'm more exposed.
00:17I'm someone that I've... I think I know a lot more about music than cinema, for example.
00:24I don't consider myself a cinephile, but I've spent many, many years of my life listening to music.
00:31I tried to be a musician and I failed, and then opera was somehow my way to the art form, the art world.
00:40And so it's very intimate, my relationship with music, with opera, and of course with the figure of Maria Callas.
00:48And in a way, I feel that there's a part of me inside of that movie that I, I don't know, I care a lot about it.
00:57And I think I had the chance, I'm very lucky I had the chance to make the movie.
01:02I think Angelina does something really extraordinary and beautiful.
01:06But there's a fragment of myself that is inside of that movie that it won't return, that I just gave it to it.
01:15So that's where I think that's coming from, yeah.
01:18It sounds like Angelina gave so much of herself to this movie, too, and to this role.
01:22How did you know she was the right person to play Maria in this film?
01:25I don't know. I don't have a very rational answer to that.
01:28It just fails the right person, and I don't think this movie would exist without her.
01:34It was her first, and then I invited Steve Knight, and then we went to the producers, and then we got the money,
01:40and then the distribution, she was the first call I did.
01:43And it's someone that can carry that mystery, can really do that.
01:51Someone who has a lot of discipline, those things are important.
01:54She can really work, and stay focused, and prepare a role for many, many months, and get there.
02:00And embrace the story of a woman that we respect, that we care, but also that we consider to be fascinating.
02:09And that fascination can be filmed, hopefully.
02:12And that is something that she embodies, and that's the weight that she has, and camera is so important.
